Apologies if you have answered this question but, could you tell us, being that you have had lots of experience with these XkR and 8s, which year would you recommend? I am in california and i am seeing a few that are quite well taken cared of. Thanks in advance for your answer.
They’re all great 👍 The most trouble free are the 2003+ years with the updated engine and transmission (2003-2006). You can also go with the Supercharged model if you’re looking for something truly special 🙌
To be honest I don't like Miami or America but I freakin' LOVE this guy- he has become the BEST car commentator on RUclips and has unparalleled taste- Bravo! Excelente!
Spot on! It’s worth noting that the engine deficiencies you mention, e.g., timing chain tensioners and guides, water pump housing, etc., were corrected with the intro of the 4.2 engine in 2003. I’ve done all of those upgrades on my 2000 XK8. Changed trans fluid and no issues with it so far.
@@HernanSpeed I should also mention I started changing coils one at a time and realised only way to get rid of constant “restricted performance” messages was to change all at once, as you pointed out. Also, anti-knock and O2 sensors will likely need to be changed😊
Yess, the coil’s always give issues after 60k miles. I would definitely replace them for fresh ones before they start missing, avoiding a headache is priceless 💯💯👊
Thank you for all this good information. We have a 1998 XK8 and mostly love it. I knew about the tensioners and water pump so had those done immediately. Ours had 38,000 when we bought it. I will now be changing all of the coils my and the front bushings. Thanks.
Have owned a black 2005 XKR coupe for 10 years, and just added a Crystal Red 2008 Corvette coupe. The XKR is a sophisticated yet stunning brunette with an English accent, in a strapless black cocktail dress, pearl necklace, and high heels, while the Vette is a barefooted strawberry blonde, wearing cut-off jeans, a wet T-shirt, and with legs that go all the way. I am in love with them both.
Unless you had the 2001 like myself. The same guy did jag wood interiors for like 60 years. When he retired, his apprentice started in 2001 and rushed the process. My 2001 XKR beautiful wood dash turned milky white after the warranty.
Just purchased Alternator LNC1800AA. At least 3 hours labor charge! Ouch! Having intermittent electrical problems I never had. Voltage must be very low. Remember to Add Alternators to your plethora of problems. I DO love this car, But it kicks my ASS every time. Still LOVE it!!! Thanks for getting back. Ill be sure to let you know after the Alternator install. Be well my man! You rock! Ben
I've had two XK8s (the one I have now is almost at 200,000 miles), and I feel like I need to add a few notes. Everything Hernan says in this video is 100% accurate, and these can absolutely be used as daily drivers. However, living in rural Pennsylvania has added one minor wrinkle for me: a LOT of parts can't just be had at the local Advance Auto and need to be ordered. They're not expensive. They're not hard to find on line. But if you're living somewhere rural, you do need to be prepared to wait a day or two for shipping. There is one other part besides the bushings that my car eats: the coolant storage tank. This is probably because it's plastic and it gets COLD here. In a warmer area, this may not be an issue. Again, the part isn't hard to get, isn't exorbitantly priced, and it's not hard to replace. Jaguar did an absolutely amazing job making these cars easy to work on. The car is absolutely reliable provided you perform normal, reasonable maintenance and you factor in normal replacement schedules for things like water pumps, alternators, etc. I have driven mine in the snow. I don't recommend this, but for being a rear-wheel drive GT car, I can't complain about how it handled. This is the only time I have found this car to be less than completely sure-footed. This car is incredibly poised and handles beautifully (especially with fresh suspension bushings), and it is QUIET inside - even the convertible if the top is up - which means on a deserted stretch of highway you can easily find yourself accidentally on the fun side of 100 mph if you are not paying attention. Driving feel simply doesn't change much between 70 and 100. The exhaust note is authoritative but it does not scream. Personally I like blowing past someone in a car that sounds like it is making absolutely no effort. But, if you are looking for a loud, shouty car, this isn't it (the XKR may be different). In buying one, I absolutely recommend the later cars with the 4.2L engine. Pretty much all of the hiccups from the early models were fixed.
I saw one years ago on the front page of a car magazine & loved that bonnet & E Type nose. Having to give up the motorbikes, I wanted something special on 4 wheels & remembered the XK8. I did my research & bought the 4.2 litre motor in a black 04' coupe - with low mileage & no rust. Have just replaced the front shocks & nice yellow top plates as well. Tis a pleasure to drive.
Special indeed! 🙌 Good choice on going with the 4.2, that one also has the awesome 6-speed gearbox! Very reliable.. With new front shocks and top plates, you’ll truly enjoy that beast! 💥💯💯 Jim Cottee thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I love that people think these cars are still junk (especially after Tata Motors took them over in 2007), which makes them depreciate a ton which in turn has allowed me to own a couple of nearly $100k cars for penny's on the dollar. My first Jaguar was a 2010 XK and now I own a 2015 XKR, they're the most beautiful head turning reliable cars that I've had out of over 80 or so! I've had a plethora of high-end cars that are usually gone in a year or so because I get bored, had the first XK roughly 3yrs and going on 5yrs for the XKR. My 2015 has had both the upper and lower pulley changed along with a tune and it's pushing nearly 650BBHP (up from the already hefty stock 510hp undersized upper and lower pulley), which allows this old grey haired grandpa to whoop up on a few of these kids, lol PS; And it's a Daily Driver!
Ufff! You did the pulley upgrade! It must be a monster when you put the hammer down! 🚀🚀👊 Take good care of it, they’re not going to make anything like it ever again 💯💯 Michael thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Aloha ! I am in California and I own 2001 jaguar VDP, in my humble opinion it’s a most magnificent car ever been built, it’s my weekend driver only, I got 120,000 miles on it, approximately 10,000 miles ago I had to rebuild the transmission for a first time, ($3100), it cost me approximately $300 a year to maintain, but it’s worth every penny, constantly getting envious looks, people asking me if I would sell it, people giving me compliments, it, just magnificent. The only problem I’m having periodically, don’t have a clue what is it mean but it says:(Evap) but my mechanic tell me just to reset the check engine or ignore it
Ahh yesss, the Vanden Plas! The long wheelbase on the XJ8’s really do it for me, it totally makes the car! 🚀🚀 I wouldn’t worry too much about the (Evap), it’s probably just a small air leak. If it gets really bad and the limp mode ‘Restricted Performance’ is activated, then you know it’s time to track the issue down. Otherwise, just enjoy the car and take good care of it!! 👊👊
Hello I am a 04 Jaguar XJR owner, I believe my car has air suspension, thankfully so far it is still good at 195k miles...recently overhauled the entire cooling system, and it has the ZF 6 speed 😁
@@HernanSpeed Right on man its overheated a couple of times since I had been daily driving on leaky hoses and a bad water pump, but both oil and coolant came out looking very good during servicing
I had a 2003 Convertible XRK from new (2003) sold in 2016 with 120000 miles on the clock, Paramount Performance kit (500 BHP) and Larini exhaust. ZERO issues whatsoever.
YESSS!💥💥 That’s the way to have it! They sound incredible with exhaust, and the pulley upgrade from Paramount really take it to another level! 💯👊👊💯 Mark thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Very good and comprehensive video man. I am lurking on the XK8 forums for couple of years now to see what sort of issue i will have once i get one, this video is the summary of my 2 yr research compressed in 10 mins 🙌. you hit every point needed to know before pulling the trigger on these. I will be getting a 2004 + XK8 convertible in a year or so. thanks for an excellent and informative video.
Must say your so right about these X100’s ...so many misinformation out there. I did a lot of research before buying my 2000 XK8 Coupe. They do have some quarks, but once you understand them, they are pretty reliable...especially for an exotic! I bought the 2000 because it’s the last year of the original design which I prefer the look before the changes.
Ta very much mate. I got my '02 XKR 4.2 in October. I'm lovin' it! (Screw McDonald's) I'm very grateful for your advice about the suspension bushes. She's about to have her 60,000 mile service (next week) and I'll get the bushes changed then. Good luck, keep 'em comin', thanks I'd had a 1990 6-litre XJS for eleven years before that. Fantastic car
That’s a great one! 🙌🙌 The 4.2 + 6speed!!💥💥 I’ve always liked the XJS’s, they have definitely achieved the full classic car status….while still being daily drivers. I haven’t owned one yet, one is definitely in my future! Luke Davis thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I had a 6.0 V12 XJS for about 12 years before my XKR. I also suspect my XKR may be the fastest car in the country with hand controls (I use a wheelchair all of the time). There used to be a quadriplegic chap somewhere near Liverpool who had a 200mph car he drove just using his mouth, tongue and cheeks. I knew the guys who did the adaptations. His car was in their building when I borrowed a wheelchair from them after mine was stolen in Germany. But that must be about 20 years ago. Any idea how I might find that out@@HernanSpeed ? Ta
I'm planning to delimit her, I'm debating meth or nitrous but I'll do one of them for sure. Then it should certainly be fastest in the county with hand controls.
My XJS was totally reliable for daily use, fairly thirsty but a fantastic car. Bit big to park, but it had a six litre V12 engine! What do you want? Good luck getting a good one@@HernanSpeed
Cool to see a new XK8 video pop up. I had a 97 convertible almost 10 years ago and have always missed it so just picked up a 2006 coupe with 38k miles. One of the cleanest I've seen in awhile but it did need upper strut bushings like they all do lol already fixed it though.
Nice! Great cars! Yes, the shock mount is part of the deal! But it’s not as bad on the 97 because they’ve got the 17” wheels, those are much better for the suspension 😎🙌 Nick T thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed thanks for the response. Part of why I love them so much is when I was 14 years old, I went to a Jaguar dealer with my mom to buy a used chevy they had. When we were there she sat in a brand new XK8 and we were so impressed and kind of blown away but it was never realistic, felt like the dirty poor people sitting in a new car being impressed. lol Well, since then I've been very fortunate in my life and career to have purchased lots of dream cars of mine. Going back to this old Jag has just been a personal reminder of keep working hard and even bigger things can pay off.
Thanks for the great video! A few things to add....there are added costs owning the the XKR to XK8. One being the Brembo brakes are more expensive to replace. Also the CATS suspension is more prone to break and also are more expensive to fix. With having a Supercharger....it’s something additional that will need servicing like all the vacuum hoses. Also, anything underneath the supercharger that needs replacement is very time consuming to take it off. So in turn, the XK8 is cheaper to run.
Yes, especially after 150k miles when parts should be refreshed. I’d say the biggest cost difference is tires, the XKR definitely goes through tires faster 💨💨
YESSS! Jaguar’s became a pleasure for daily commute’s, not just weekends! While I really like the older ones, the XK8’s have always been sooo reliable…like any modern Ford 🙌🙌 DensalBeach1 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Hey, this is the first video of yours i've seen and as an XKR owner can i say thank you! I've been looking for the source of the front suspension clunk for a long time and i think this may finally be the resolution.
@@HernanSpeedJust rewatched and this review is even better the second time. Makes me feel good that I own a Jaguar XKR. The most perfect review for a great car!
Love my Stunning Coupe! 18yrs NOT milk and honey! I would call it PASSION! Nice video my man! I did everything you talked about, EVERYTHING. OH the pain. Never did a Coil. Never did the Tranny. Fingers crossed. I have 87K on the clock.
A Coupe! 🙌🙌 Nice! At 87k, it’s just getting warmed up! These are incredible cars! The coils are totally easy, no special tools required. If you baby the trans, it should last. But the coils will eventually go, especially in hot weather… but it’s less than a 2hr job for all of them. Ben Leone thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Lolol. I subscribe to your channel and now see your videos and the XK8 is a car I'm currently looking at. I'm the guy with the 944 that you answered about the AC problem.
Correct, I wasn’t saying the wood was vinyl. I was talking about the leather, most of what looks like leather is actually vinyl. So on the seats: only the front section is leather, the rest is vinyl. The center console is also vinyl. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
Great video thanks, how much would you average the cost for replacing the front suspension bushings? And what do you recommend replacing it with so it lasts more then a couple thousand of miles?
Only go with factory bushings purchased at the dealership. These are the best option and give the most miles (15k+ miles). They’re not that expensive. Budget in about $650 for parts(front only), and the labor depends on your area ($1,500 avg). If you go with any aftermarket bushings, you’ll be redoing them in no time (aftermarket units ‘look’ OEM btw). Thanks for watching man! 👊👊
5:20 I've got to mention, the XK8 Convertible top has issues with the hydraulic lines going to the cilinder in de roof part. They are know to leak, or break at a certain time.
Yes, the ‘green shower’. It happens on most convertibles with automatic latches, but it’s an easy/cheap fix VS other cars. Lots of ‘How To’ articles too! I’d say it will happen once in the car’s lifetime 💯💯 Thanks for watching man! 👊👊
This was really helpful. Thank you. I am in the considering phase. I love the F type - but I don’t love BLACK interiors and for some reason - I feel like Jag too a really cheap route with the f type interior wise. When you don’t want black interior all you can get are the seats - and like two other pieces of panel in a matching color. It just looks like - someone just put whiskey seats in a black interior car. The older models still did it right. Tan is fully tan. Whiskey is fully whiskey - grey etc.. but this was helpful.
Thank you for post about the XKR Hernan! I have a Black 2012 XKR Coupe I bought 12 years ago and she is a real beauty! Do you know which engine and trainee was used for this model...Ford?
That’s one of my favorites with the updated bodywork! 👊💯💯 Ford sold Jaguar to TaTa Motors in 2008, so most of the Jaguars XK150 engineering/investment was carried out under Ford’s wing. Things like the transmission were outsourced to ZF, they make transmissions for BMW, Porsche’s, Mercedes, and even Kia’s! Your car is the newer X150 platform with the 5.0L AJ-V8 Gen III. It’s essentially the same engine as the older 4.2L, but enlarged (parts are not interchangeable though). This 5.0L engine was also used on Supercharged Range Rovers. The transmission is the updated version of the one mentioned in this video, the ZF 6HP28. It’s an incredible transmission that takes a lot of power! 🚀🚀 If you take care of it, you’re XKR should last you forever! 🙌🙌 Mr Blake Simmons thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Had a 2001 XK8 coupé back in 2008/9/10. It was a beautiful moneypit. There was always something going wrong - ABS module failed, coolant reservoir leaked, tensioners needed replacing, relays always malfunctioning... I even had a differential issue which took repeated visits to the Jag garage to fix. Never had to replace any bushings though. Undoubtedly one of the automotive design greats, and better than its successor IMO, but caveat emptor!
Hi👋🏻 If the differential issues took “several visits” to address, it’s a Red Flag 🚩for the garage.. as do all the issues listed actually. These are easy cars to work on, I’ve had many. Jonathan thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
My wife just purchased a 2001 XK8 and she is very excited about it. I like to do most of my mechanical work and was wondering if you could direct me to a solid parts supplier for the items you listed that should be replaced. This is our first European car and I want it as nice and reliable for her as possible. Thank you for your video!
Congrats! 🍾 My wife loooves Jags! The best place to buy new parts is actually a Jaguar dealership, their prices are often less expensive than a local auto parts store. But their prices can vary depending on location, for the exact same part. If you need a specific part, get quotes from different dealers around the country(most do next day shipping). I think you’ll find the prices to be comparable to American/Asian cars. Scott McCown thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Excellent no non-sense string of advice. Thank you so much! I just now realized that the front suspension bushings are totally gone on my car... Would you know of any solution or part that would last more than a few thousand miles?
I’ve tried all options, the factory parts are what actually last the longest. So most aftermarket solutions are not worth it. It’s part of the deal with these XK8’s, just budget it in as running maintenance. Not a big deal considering how good the rest of the car is! 🙌💯💯 Marc Aurele thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
i also have an xk8 here in miami and your on point with everything you said! i have the restricted performance message and i cant find out what it is, everything is working normally and all i have are 2 faulty sensors, could that be the cause or should i replace the ignition coils?
Yeap, it very well could be! Just one bad ignition coil will send several faulty messages to the OBD2 scanner, because a misfire causes everything to run bad. With the XK8, the coils always go bad. Changing coils is easier than changing spark plugs. Just remove the cover, it’s 2 bolts per coil….they just slide out. If the car is a keeper, buy all 8. If you’re going to sell, then just buy 1 coil and test as you change them up. Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Engine was used in the Ford Thunderbird & Lincoln LS…main difference is that it didn’t have the VVT. A version of this engine is still used today in modern Jaguars & Range Rovers! Martin Duffy thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
It’s a Jaguar designed engine - they persuaded Ford that Fords V8 wasn’t good enough to compete with Lexus, BMW etc so Ford funded the Jaguar AJ26 and built it under contract for Jaguar.
Like video, recently bought a 99 xk8 with 69k. It was a 1 owner car with a pile of receipts but i dont see anything about the transmission being serviced. Can you please tell me where i can get more info on the transmission upgrade you mentioned in the video? Thanks
Congrats! Yes, that year has the ZF 5HP24 transmission. It’s shared with many other cars, the main issue that is as the valve body wears…it makes spikes in pressure, this can mess up the A-drum & D-drum. Some people have the valve body modified to have less pressure. If you do a search in the Jaguar X308 forums, you’ll find answers (X308 has same trans as the XK8). Not many have done the mod, is it worth it? I say enjoy the car! 🙌 Most people don’t have issues, just don’t abuse it. J Paz thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
It’s crazy ever since you mentioned it, I went to look through the AutoTrader here in South Africa, and EVERY single XK8/R has the front suspension collapsed 🤣
The front shock mount is the first one to go on all of them. I would also inspect all the front joints if it’s in really bad condition. These are relatively simple cars to work on, it will ride sooo much better with new bushings! John Kimber thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I have owned a 2000 XKR for 9 years and I know about automobile functions and repair. CilmaX Speed talked about issues I know to be true and more importantly, the potential good reliability of the X100 XKR, XK8.
It was harder the first time around, by the 3rd time… I did it in 3-4 hours. The hardest part is actually using the spring compressors to take apart the strut (time consuming). Otherwise, it’s a straight forward job ✅ Thanks for watching brother! 🔥🔥
They are beautiful, classy, reliable, perform very well and... still fairly inexpensive - future classics whose value is going to start rising quickly. But, don't get one for investment. Get one for the fun.
Probably not so much of an issue where you live, but in the uk for example, the biggest issue with these, is rust! The lower rear quarter panels and sills rot for fun on many and its one reason for most being so ridiculously cheap to buy! £3000 or less can get a Coupe and interestingly, here, convertibles are worth quite a lot more than Coupes, generlly speaking! As for reliability, my first experience of a XK8 really wasn't good. Every single warning light was on on the dashboard as I drove it to a local Jaguar main dealer to be diagnosed! The poor thing hadn't had a good life! The last one i drove was better, but was suffering sith electrical gremlins where the central locking wouldn't always work and the immobiliser and alarm played up and it kept going off! Still, Id Love one! Id avoid the cheapest examples though as they are usually very rough around the edges! Spend a bit more to get a good one!
Hi from Miami! 👋🏻 Staying away from beaters is always good advice, and especially cars with rust. These XK8’s are galvanized, so if you see rust…something happened. Either it was in an accident, or it was jacked up by an improperly placed lift. Metal is metal. You mentioned your first XK8 wasn’t a good experience, it happens. But you also said it had lived a rough life and was full of warning lights… I wouldn’t blame the car, it was a car that wasn’t cared for. As I point out in this video, everyone needs to stay away from the ‘deals’. There are no deals. Find a nice one, and pay what it’s worth. You’ll have an incredible experience 🚀🚀💯💯 R1CH130 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Great car for a 16 year old!! 🚀🚀 The 2007 XK has an all new body with a modern suspension design. The suspension it’s trouble free on the base model, the supercharged XKR has adjustable suspension that is higher maintenance. Thanks for watching brother! 💯💯
My XKR that I just purchased has a very low front just as you described. Looking through the wheel arch the top suspension bushings look fairly new. Could the problem be the suspensions themselves?
Congrats man! 💥💥 Look in the engine bay, and remove the plastic covers for the shock bolts. If you see orange foam particles, they need replacing. If could also be something else, but I’d check the mounts first. The XKR’s also have active suspension that go full hard mode if they’re not working, make sure they’re in working order (many disconnect them to get rid of the warning lights). Reyrob thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Hi Jag owners and experts. Apologies if you have already answered this question but, is there a particular year I should look for or stay away from? Is there a huge difference between the 3 models listed on the title of this video? I currently own a BMW Z4 convertible and would like to sell it and perhaps get into a jaguar. I am located in california and i am seeing a few that are quite well taken cared of. Thanks in advance for the advice.
X100 is the code for the model, so they’re all X100’s. There’s only 2 models, the standard XK8 & XKR. The XK8 has the normal V8 engine, the XKR has the supercharged engine. Find one with low miles, you’ll enjoy it for many years to come! 💪💪 C Maximus thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I would steer clear of the early models. The later ones (I think '02 onwards) with the 4.2L have most of the bugs worked out of them. Some of the really early ones had cylinder lining issues and the plastic tensioners mentioned in the video.
Hi! Great video! Trying to decide between 2008 M6 convertible with 27k miles and a 2012 Jag xkr convertible with 51k miles. Both priced at $32k… both one owner cars with great maintenance.. what’s your opinion?
Both are great driving cars, but that Jaguar takes the top spot for reliability alone…. also better driving. The BMW will be problematic, especially with the cooling system. The electric water pumps don’t last, and the plastic water pipes leak(common BMW issues). Expect random warning sign’s from the plastic sensors that break with age. The 2012 XKR uses the new X150 updated platform, it’s a very modern car except for the infotainment screen….it’s slow/laggy. There’s also no way to upgrade it because it’s integrated into everything. If you can live with it, it’s an AMAZING CAR! 🙌🙌 I would also try to get those prices closer to the mid 20’s. If it’s a dealership and they won’t lower on the price, have them through in a solid 6-month warranty. Colton Bowman thanks for watching!🔥🔥
Hello-My driver window goes down on opening door. Cant hard reset, no good. Alternator may not be charging properly. Would it result in haywire windows? 15 Years never saw this. Ah! Jag ownership! .
Hi👋🏻 A hard reset is disconnecting the battery, then touching the positive/negative terminals together (no battery⚠️) for 30 seconds. To reset the window module in the door: 1) Close the door with the car turned on. 2) Toggle the window down(opening) and hold until you hear a click. 3) Then repeat closing the window all the way up and hold, until you hear a click. This resets the window modul. Only 2 things can be causing this: 1) A low battery. 2) The switch in the door handle that causes the window to drop an inch when opening. Both are relatively easy fixes. Ben Leone thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Me too! Those are the hardest colors to find.. especially with the Recaro seats. I’m always on the lookout for a 05-06 Salsa Red XKR! 🚀🚀🚀 Time Traveler DMC thanks for watching! 🔥🔥🔥
Which coil packs do you recommend Which top plates do you use in front sespension. You said they last 5000 miles thats bad! Whats the solution. I want one need help!
I saw an ad once for a company that sold high performance urethane suspension bushing kits. The ad said, "Can't find the bushings you need? We can make bushings to order for one-off or unusual suspension setups." Sorry, I can't remember the company name.
Man, I think I remember them from back in the day! I’ve tried urethane front shock mounts, they still sell them….they last even less than the originals (the ride wasn’t firmer though). I know several people are looking into custom bushings, but there doesn’t seem to be a huge market for them. Net Gnostic thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
No more than the average car, except for the front suspension bushings (cheap, but labor isn’t). I’d say no more than $1,400 US on a nice one (no need to catch up on maintenance). The convertible tops last forever, except for a few hydraulic connections which can spring a leak once every 10 years. If you find a nice one, it will be a reliable as any Ford…just add gas ⛽️ Dan F thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Where do you get parts. Because I am not familiar with the parts I am afraid to order them online if they are the wrong part I would not know. I am up in Jackson NC now and definitely no one even knows how to get to the battery.
100% accurate mines is on its 4th transmission the first one drum failed the second got damaged from coolant internally leaking in from the radiator and the third from doing an engine swap myself and improperly installing the transmission torque converter and yes the coupes are nicer convertible cars are just not cool mines unfortunately is a convertible but i got it for 5000 with 120k miles so not bad
Do you know if the 2003 XK8 has the 6 speed transmission, Im looking to buy one and found a great deal for $3k with 150k miles just needs to be repainted as clear coat is bad but body and interior is like new.
Yes, 2003 is the first year of the 6-Speed. It’s also the first year of the upgraded 4.2 engine, it’s a great combo! 💯🚀🚀 Take it for a test drive and check if the suspension is clunky… also for any faults in the gauge cluster (bring an OBD2 scanner to check for any fault codes too). Most importantly… do the math, painting a car properly isn’t cheap. LivefromMIA thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Rande, the Valve body is modified so it creates less pressure on the A-drum. Most shops will pull the transmission, it’s just easier for them. If you’re car is running great, I wouldn’t stress over it. Don’t abuse it, and you’ll be okay 👌. The ZF 5HP-24 transmission is common, and shared with many BMW’s (XJ8 too). Rande Friedman thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Thanks Pal, I am replacing my 1997 XJ6 with a very nice 2000 XK8 convertible, 36,000 miles. It will be my daily driver and I want to be as proactive as possible. I am having the transmission fluid/filter/gasted flushed and replaced. What atf do you recommend? What are your thoughts about replacing the timing chain tensioners & guides with metal before any issues? BTW I live in Tampa and it is wonderful to have a convertible with great a/c!@@HernanSpeed
@randefriedman7307 NICE!! 🙌 Stick with the original ESSO 71141 fluid, no need to change. The tensions won’t give issues with 36k, most issues start popping up after 80k. If you’re setting it up as a daily driver, I’d get it done so you can forget about it. The XK8 convertible is a great daily driver down here, the convertibles are actually much cooler in the summer because the tops are well insulated 👌
The restricted performance kicks in when there’s a misfire, it’s so that you won’t keep driving it. I would guess it’s a coil, its very common. Hook up an OBD2 scanner and get the fault codes, that will help you pinpoint the issue. Reset it by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, then run the scanner again (to get accurate codes). Most auto-parts have scanners, they’re easy to get 😎 Sheraina Gustus thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
It’s easier to UP the boost on the XKR’s engine by adding smaller pulley. These XKR engines were used on the Supercharged Range Rovers.. I’ve seen many with 600hp+, plus more torque than a Coyote 💯💯👊 Huss thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I qualified mechanic shouldn’t take longer than 5-6 hrs, my brother changed them in 2 hrs (taking his time). I’ve never had to touch the timing chain guides on an XK8, they’re not problematic like the early tensioners 🙌🙌
Hi👋🏻 Yes it does, up to 2002. When Jaguar enlarged to motor to a 4.2 in 2003, it switched to the ZF Transmission. Hatorihanzo108 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
The swap wouldn’t be as easy as it sounds because of the electronics. The early XK8 transmissions are usually good for a lifetime after a rebuild, I haven’t seen anyone rebuild them twice.. Just make sure the shop rebuilding it knows the weak point, then you’ll be good to go 😎 Joshua Wright thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
What year should I get if I want a good deal on it but have a tight budget, like $6000, what year would you recommend that’s the most reliable for a cheaper price
If the budget is tight, go for the most reliable one’s. Anything 2003 and up, everything was already updated in that year. It’s worth spending more upfront, so you have less headaches later 💯👊👊
Ricardo, this is one of the best resources for your car (X150). Most questions get answered the same day! 💯👊👊 www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk-xkr-x150-33/
Jags are FAR more reliable than Bimmers and Mercedes. I currently own an XKR, XJ8 and an XJ12. I have owned a series 1 E-type, an XJ6 and an XJS 6.0. All were reliable and faults were simple fixes. I replaced the coils on my XJ8 myself $200, the XJ12 needed the main ground cable contacts cleaned to remove galvanic corrosion, the rack bushings on my XJS 6.0 were $200 and I used poly bushings. The XJ12 can sit for 2 months and it starts the instant the key is turned. I love Jaguars, but am disgusted with the styling of the sedans (saloons) after 2009. Recently on a BAT auction two, sub 25K mile 2009 Portfolio XJ8s sold for $156,000 and $175,000.
Yesss 🙌🙌 This is what I’m talking about! Classic Jags are much simpler to work on, especially if you compare them to any modern car☝️ Clarkecars thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
The EU is full of 1980’s Mercedes 300E’s with over 500k+ miles, they’re even used as taxi cabs…they keep running! They’re amazing cars! I also think they have great tech’s over there that really know how to properly maintain cars
Thanks for the info. Truly appreciate it. A gentleman is selling a 2003 XK8 100k miles. Very clean interior and decent exterior. he purchased a few upgrades for the car but lost interest and no longer wants to deal with it because he wants to shift his attention to another car (Mercedes). I would have to finish installing a new top. Top hydraulics need to be refilled, and also needs the catalytic converters as they were stolen. Good news is he has all these parts and are included in the price ($2,500). I am not sure if I should even bother to go look at it in person… what do you guys think?
Thank you for the comment..I always loved jag but heard horror stories. I had a 2014 s500 Mercedes & currently have a 2017 330i no problems with either of them regardless of what people say about German cars I always loved them but lately thinking about getting a jag. Any newer models that you recommend that rivals a s class or 3 series please lmk these cars are beautiful
Has anyone developed an after-market front foam bushing that constantly wear out? Can you estimate the cost of having an independent mechanic take care of the issue?

Apologies if you have answered this question but, could you tell us, being that you have had lots of experience with these XkR and 8s, which year would you recommend? I am in california and i am seeing a few that are quite well taken cared of. Thanks in advance for your answer.
They’re all great 👍 The most trouble free are the 2003+ years with the updated engine and transmission (2003-2006). You can also go with the Supercharged model if you’re looking for something truly special 🙌

My good friend wants me to buy his 1997 XK8 coupe blk on blk with 100k for really price, should I jump on it?
To be honest I don't like Miami or America but I freakin' LOVE this guy- he has become the BEST car commentator on RUclips and has unparalleled taste- Bravo! Excelente!
We all love cars! Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
That’s fantastic man! You’ve got a car for many great years ahead! 💯👊👊
Thanks.
First thing to know:
This is one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Period.
I gotta agree! 🙌🙌

Was at an exotic car dealer recently, saw this car, and was, "Me likey!"
Just bought a 1997 in Champagne :) XK8 Coupe.
Congrats!! 🍾🍾
This guy gets it!!
Get underneath the Jag & you will know it's not very "sophisticated." There is a lot of braindead engineering going on.
It's great to hear a knowledgable long-time multi-owner talk about this superb vehicle :)

Amazing how well these cars have aged! And many cars of this era have terrible plastic dashboards, but the wood dash in the XK is pure class!
YOU ARE CORRECT! 💯🙌💥

Unless you had the 2001 like myself. The same guy did jag wood interiors for like 60 years. When he retired, his apprentice started in 2001 and rushed the process. My 2001 XKR beautiful wood dash turned milky white after the warranty.
It’s the type of resin used on the wood finishes, all XK8 wood finishes turn milky unless stored indoors.
Just purchased Alternator LNC1800AA. At least 3 hours labor charge! Ouch! Having intermittent electrical problems I never had. Voltage must be very low. This car has hit me for just about everything! But I still continue to love it! Ill keep you posted! Thanks again for getting back!
Solid points! Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊

My 2015 has had both the upper and lower pulley changed along with a tune and it's pushing nearly 650BBHP (up from the already hefty stock 510hp undersized upper and lower pulley), which allows this old grey haired grandpa to whoop up on a few of these kids, lol
PS; And it's a Daily Driver!
Ufff! You did the pulley upgrade! It must be a monster when you put the hammer down! 🚀🚀👊 Take good care of it, they’re not going to make anything like it ever again 💯💯

I wouldn’t worry too much about the (Evap), it’s probably just a small air leak.

Great choice! The coupe’s are spectacular, a true modern classic! 💯💯

Very good video. Thank you
I had a 6.0 V12 XJS for about 12 years before my XKR.
But it’s not as bad on the 97 because they’ve got the 17” wheels, those are much better for the suspension 😎🙌

Love this! I know exactly what you mean, this adds to a greater appreciation of the car…and all things in life ☀️

Loved the video and agree 100%, the best thing that happened to Jaguar was Ford ownership. Quality went up through the roof as did reliability.
YESSS! Jaguar’s became a pleasure for daily commute’s, not just weekends! While I really like the older ones, the XK8’s have always been sooo reliable…like any modern Ford 🙌🙌

Great video and new subscriber here! However - the wooden dashes aren't plastic/vinyl - they're wood veneer

Yes, the ‘green shower’. It happens on most convertibles with automatic latches, but it’s an easy/cheap fix VS other cars. Lots of ‘How To’ articles too! I’d say it will happen once in the car’s lifetime 💯💯

This was really helpful. Thank you. I am in the considering phase. When you don’t want black interior all you can get are the seats - and like two other pieces of panel in a matching color. It just looks like - someone just put whiskey seats in a black interior car. Thank you for post about the XKR Hernan! I have a Black 2012 XKR Coupe I bought 12 years ago and she is a real beauty! Do you know which engine and trainee was used for this model...Ford?
That’s one of my favorites with the updated bodywork! 👊💯💯
Ford sold Jaguar to TaTa Motors in 2008, so most of the Jaguars XK150 engineering/investment was carried out under Ford’s wing.
If you take care of it, you’re XKR should last you forever! 🙌🙌

Thank you for the advise!

i also have an xk8 here in miami and your on point with everything you said! i have the restricted performance message and i cant find out what it is, everything is working normally and all i have are 2 faulty sensors, could that be the cause or should i replace the ignition coils?
Yeap, it very well could be! Just one bad ignition coil will send several faulty messages to the OBD2 scanner, because a misfire causes everything to run bad. With the XK8, the coils always go bad.
Changing coils is easier than changing spark plugs. Just remove the cover, it’s 2 bolts per coil….they just slide out. If the car is a keeper, buy all 8. If you’re going to sell, then just buy 1 coil and test as you change them up.

Engine was used in the Ford Thunderbird & Lincoln LS…main difference is that it didn’t have the VVT. A version of this engine is still used today in modern Jaguars & Range Rovers!

I want to go look to buy a car right now even though I already drive the XKR now. I am not a coupe person I love the convertible.
It’s crazy ever since you mentioned it, I went to look through the AutoTrader here in South Africa, and EVERY single XK8/R has the front suspension collapsed 🤣
Yeap! There’s no escaping it, happens to all of them
Where can I find the upgraded metal belt tensioner?
I would get them from the Jaguar dealership, the parts department…prices are very reasonable 💯💯 Thanks for watching! 👊👊
I just bought a 1997 XK8 in Champagne, a Coupe. I am a master Subaru Mechanic, so dw... ill be alright with maintenance haha.
Congratulations! My first XK8 was also a 1997 coupe, it was a great car!
I just bought a 1997 xk8 in poor condition. I was wondering why it was so low at the front. Just ordered the shock mounts. Thank you.
The front shock mount is the first one to go on all of them. I would also inspect all the front joints if it’s in really bad condition. These are relatively simple cars to work on, it will ride sooo much better with new bushings!

I have owned a 2000 XKR for 9 years and I know about automobile functions and repair. CilmaX Speed talked about issues I know to be true and more importantly, the potential good reliability of the X100 XKR, XK8.
Got love the XKR, an incredible engine! 🙌🙌💥

You didn't mention how hard it is to replace the front suspension bushings?
It was harder the first time around, by the 3rd time… I did it in 3-4 hours. The hardest part is actually using the spring compressors to take apart the strut (time consuming). Otherwise, it’s a straight forward job ✅
Thanks for watching brother! 🔥🔥
Are there Suspension Shock Absorber Mount.aftermarket parts who last much longer ? Where to buy ?
Thank you
The original ones last the longest. Only get them at the Jaguar dealership, the prices are very reasonable 💯💯
Thanks for watching! 👊👊
Will not buy one probably, but thanks! Beautiful car!
They’re not for everyone, that’s for sure. I ended up driving one by mistake many years ago, I got hooked☝️
Larkin Flight thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
They are beautiful, classy, reliable, perform very well and... still fairly inexpensive - future classics whose value is going to start rising quickly. But, don't get one for investment. Get one for the fun.
✅ THX man👍😉
Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
You’ll have an incredible experience 🚀🚀💯💯

Planning to get my 16yo son Jag XK 2007 or 2008. Will check the bushings. Is this a probl for XK 2007?

Is there any chance I could send you a photo of what they look like please?
Yes, send me a message on IG (link in description)
C Maximus thanks for watching!
I would also try to get those prices closer to the mid 20’s. If it’s a dealership and they won’t lower on the price, have them through in a solid 6-month warranty.

Which coil packs do you recommend
Which top plates do you use in front sespension.
You said they last 5000 miles thats bad!
Whats the solution.

I saw an ad once for a company that sold high performance urethane suspension bushing kits. The ad said, "Can't find the bushings you need? We can make bushings to order for one-off or unusual suspension setups."
Sorry, I can't remember the company name.
so big question- how much should i budget per year for maintenance tires and repairs. ??? also what about he convertible roof?
No more than the average car, except for the front suspension bushings (cheap, but labor isn’t). I’d say no more than $1,400 US on a nice one (no need to catch up on maintenance). The convertible tops last forever, except for a few hydraulic connections which can spring a leak once every 10 years. If you find a nice one, it will be a reliable as any Ford…just add gas ⛽️

@@HernanSpeed good to know. i pay more than that to keep my old avalon running
Where do you get parts. Because I am not familiar with the parts I am afraid to order them online if they are the wrong part I would not know. I am up in Jackson NC now and definitely no one even knows how to get to the battery.
Most shops can easily work on these cars, they’re simpler than most cars actually
Thanks for watching sharing! You got that convertible at a great price! 💯👊👊
great reviews. Let's keep it our secret shhhhhh.
Haha! Can’t help it, they’re GREAT! 🙌🙌

Take it for a test drive and check if the suspension is clunky… also for any faults in the gauge cluster (bring an OBD2 scanner to check for any fault codes too). Most importantly… do the math, painting a car properly isn’t cheap.

Which valve modification part do I need, and is it easy to install or does the transmission need to be dropped?
Hey my jaguar has restricted performance and it's missing and won't go passed 2500 rpms any guess??
The restricted performance kicks in when there’s a misfire, it’s so that you won’t keep driving it.
I would guess it’s a coil, its very common. Hook up an OBD2 scanner and get the fault codes, that will help you pinpoint the issue. Reset it by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, then run the scanner again (to get accurate codes). Most auto-parts have scanners, they’re easy to get 😎

I wonder if one can just do a coyote engine swap,
It’s easier to UP the boost on the XKR’s engine by adding smaller pulley. These XKR engines were used on the Supercharged Range Rovers.. I’ve seen many with 600hp+, plus more torque than a Coyote 💯💯👊
Huss thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
How many labor hours does it take to change the tensioners? Do the timing chains and guides need changing also?
I qualified mechanic shouldn’t take longer than 5-6 hrs, my brother changed them in 2 hrs (taking his time). I’ve never had to touch the timing chain guides on an XK8, they’re not problematic like the early tensioners 🙌🙌
Thanks@@HernanSpeed , so I should just have the mechanic change both the tensioner sets (primary and secondary)? Or just the secondary? Rande
Does this mean the XKR does not have a Mercedes 722.6 transmission like the XJR 5 speed manual has?
Hi👋🏻 Yes it does, up to 2002. When Jaguar enlarged to motor to a 4.2 in 2003, it switched to the ZF Transmission.
Hatorihanzo108 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
My transmission went out on my 97 xk8 is it practical to replace it with a xkr transmission
The swap wouldn’t be as easy as it sounds because of the electronics. The early XK8 transmissions are usually good for a lifetime after a rebuild, I haven’t seen anyone rebuild them twice.. Just make sure the shop rebuilding it knows the weak point, then you’ll be good to go 😎

@@HernanSpeed I really appreciate it man thank you so much!!!

Classic Jags are much simpler to work on, especially if you compare them to any modern car☝️

In general yes but the exception is Mercedes from the 80’s those were built to last
The EU is full of 1980’s Mercedes 300E’s with over 500k+ miles, they’re even used as taxi cabs…they keep running!
I’d also be interested know, I’ve already tried all the aftermarket ones!
