She was backing down on her lines against a fixed bollard. Totally routine for a paddle steamer and totally common for any vessel in any wind. That is why bollards are fixed like they are, to facilitate such maneuvers. I didn't see any movement of the pier at all, of course the vessel wasn't secured to the pier, so if it HAD failed, it would have failed because of other circumstances. This headline is worse than most the misleading press headlines of today. Shameful!
Very misleading description of what is a standard maneuver, efficiently carried out by master and crew of this fantastic steam paddle ship. I suppose this is a result of the public attraction the Waverley generates wherever she goes. there is bound to be an idiot somewhere among the crowd. Good video though ... shame about the title!
A well executed maneuver. Sailors use this method to clear piers. Chris King, do you have the ability to change the heading on your comment. If so, please do it will then reflect reality.
I had great fears for that pier , and all people on it. And the passengers on the Waverley barely escaped with their lives ! Ridiculous title. Nothing out of the ordinary there at all.
OMG a near desaster of titanic porportion maybe you should sue them for putting all your lives in jepordy like that...totally life changing i hope you all recovered
You haven't a clue what you are talking about. This happens at most piers and ports. As Waverley hasn't got side thrusters as paddle steamers generally don't, the winches and ropes are used to manoeuvre the ship to a safe distance/angle away from a pier in the direction of travel. It's also worth noting that paddle steamers of her size and the many more before her have a large turning circle (again lack of side thrusters).
Well I watched it all and am still wondering when the pier nearly got pulled over. Oh well. Tried google mapping 'harpenny pier' without any success. I guess it might have been 'Ha'penny Pier at Harwich.
Chris King, please change your title or remove this video? You clearly know NOTHING about ships nor the Merchant Navy. As a former harbourmaster, I can assure you this method of departure is entirely proper and routine. Your comment is utterly wrong and leaves you open to an action of libel.
If you can pull a pier over with a ship a fraction of the size of our Great Lakes Freighters, it's time to invest in reinforced concrete. That's what ours are in Canada.
I was on the P.S. Waverley once on an excursion from Oban many years ago and the same thing happened. II believe that it has happened the odd time on that boat, but in a well disciplined and aware crew (from the captain down), it should never happen.
Well maybe I blinked and missed the pier being pulled over, but this looks a pretty routine docking move to me.

Great video footage... why the false advertising title?

WTF ? This is a standard manoeuvre, known as “springing off”. Not just used by paddle-steamers but ALL vessels below a certain size.

Nice pics,shame about dialogue
No sign of this event at all

Worst description on a video EVER! Total crap. Nothing like pulling over Ha'penny Pier

Misleading title. Standard maneuver. Nothing to see here.
some nice film here of PS Waverly at Ha'penny Pier, Harwich, but utterly useless dialogue and Title!
