I travelled from Australia to see the Waverley and travel "doon the wata". Very much a highlight of my whole trip to the UK. Having generational family ties to ship engineers from Scotland, it was an emotional experience to watch the steam engines so close up aboard the Waverley. It really is magnificent to see this vessel and others that are still alive and so well maintained. Great video of a great day Steve!
Beautiful boat in Beautiful weather in Beautiful Scotland. What more could you wish for. Been a cracking week last week for weather, though windy at times. Just back from Bonnie Scotland myself.
Hi Steve, fantastic video, I am the chairman of the Scottish branch of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, I have shared your video on the Waverley Supporters channel, hopefully that will give you a few more hits 😀
The memorial is Hutcheson's memorial. My family has ties to the Waverley and I can't wait till I get to sail on her again. I live in Balloch and when I worked for VisitScotland in Helensburgh I sold tickets for her and saw her every weekend. My mum and uncle were at the meeting where she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, and we scattered my Uncle's ashes on Rothesay Bay from her. She's very special to my family.
I always wanted to go on the Waverley. She used to run in South Wales and do day trips from Porthcawl to Cornwall. There are old stories of how the folks in Cornwall could hear the Welsh men singing, far out to sea, after a good day on the lash, drinking the Cornish ale. Such a beautiful ship! Thanks Steve, that was quite profound for me.
@@steve-marsh I had a great b-day, Steve. I got flowers, phone calls, cards, and email posts with silly emoticons. I also received nice presents. Now your wishes top the whole thing off. When is your birthday? It should be a wee national holiday!
What a gorgeous journey. I would love to travel on that ship, with its clunking and rumbling. You can just feel its power. And the scenery, as usual, is incredible.
Well done Steve. As an old Waverley fan myself I find this so wonderful to re-run. Oddly enough in 1960 I went on the old 'Queen Mary 11' from Glasgow to Tighnabruaich. Fantastic I do love the West of Scotland!
Wonderful to see this lovely old lady, many happy memories of day trips as a child in the 1950s, catching the boat at the Penarth pier and across the channel to Weston Super Mare. Loved to watch the pistons going around and around, I can still hear the sound and smell the hot oils .You have made this 77year old lady very happy, cheers from New Zealand
A high quality video essay of an excellent vessel in the stunning Scottish landscape - Steve once again makes you feel as if you "are there" with him. Broadcast standard.
Better than broadcast standard because it’s made with genuine passion. A rare thing nowadays on the legacy media with its formulaic approach to features and documentaries. Not that I’d know as I ditched my TV Licence 5 years ago after discovering how much better videos like this are!
What a fantastic and beautiful vessel. For sure I'll do a cruise with her next time I'm in Scotland. And yes, Scotland never EVER disappoints. Thank you Steve for this exceptional video.
It was interesting to see HMS Glasgow being constructed. My late Dad served on the City class cruisers HMS Glasgow and Sheffield during WW2. What a treat for you to have a trip on the PS Waverly, Steve! I was in Switzerland many years ago and enjoyed a trip aboard an elegant paddler dated from 1906 on Lake Lucerne. So memorable!
Brilliant video Steve and what a beautiful old vessel! The knot you mentioned is known as a "monkeys fist" and is used as a weight on the end of a rope that is thrown to the dock when mooring......know this because my first job was as a deck hand in the merchant navy. Keep em coming Steve, beautiful scenery, absolutely loved this video!😎😎😎
I was privileged to go on the good ship Waverley when she was working the Bristol Channel with the White Funnel Fleet. We did Portishead pier to Ilfracombe via Penarth Pier to pick up the Welsh party. Day to remember, your Brilliant video brought her back in all her glory. I live in Bristol and it would be fantastic to see her again. She looks absolutely tremendous, massive credit to all the engineers and volunteers who keep her looking like that! Amazing! Thanks for your fantastic film. Regards Andy
I believe she’s not allowed in the River now unless she has a tug which the Waverley can’t afford! so doubtful she will be in Bristol again but she still comes into Avonmouth.
Once again you have taken me on a trip that I have wanted to go on forever. We still have paddle boats that run up and down the Mississippi River but I have never been on one and probably never will. Hi to Alicja. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
Terrific Steve 👏 , I'm a Bankie so ships in my DNA , and I see her passing to home most nights and never ever tire of her 😍 . She was built in that basin right behind the ' tall ship ' . Since you're a traveling man Steve , when you passed the stretch along at Bowling , it's the only place in the world to have a main road Dumbarton Rd , boulevard ( A82 ) , motorway ( A8 M ) , canal ( Forth & Clyde ) and river ( Clyde ) all running side by side . Loved it Steve , extra special thanks from your man on the Clyde , best regards
Great overview of this historic and unique vessel. Went on the Waverley as a boy and also a few years ago as a 65 year old Southend pier to Tower Bridge and back . The crowds filming from the shore and waving in London as the old girl spun around near HMS Belfast was amazing. Long may she steam.
Great old vessel Steve, and a credit to the trust that keep her seaworthy and still operating. Have been fortunate enough to have been on her twice. Like you I was stunned by the engine room and how quickly she still goes. Cracking video as usual mate, stay well.
Nice video thanks for that. I remember often seeing this ship near Weymouth in 82 as at that time I was a deckhand on a sea-link ferry doing the Channel Islands run.
That "wee chat" between the two old-timers got me choked up. What a beautiful trip that was Steve, thanks so much for taking us with you. It looked like a once in a lifetime journey indeed. Just stunning.
Thanks Steve, I've never heard of the Waverley before but I'll definitely take a trip on it next time I'm in Scotland. What a beautiful ship, so historic.
Thanks Steve for this great video, about 22 two years ago my Wife and I were on a trip to Iona from Oban on the Waverley, spending a few hours in Iona, that was a interesting day out on the pride of Scotland.
Thank you for another great video, I remember as a wee boy going down the water, with my parents and big brother, we would either leave from the broomilaw or get the train to Craigendoran but whatever way we went it was always a great adventure, when we were underway my father would go to see the engine room and with him being an ex merchant navy engineering officer who served on the Russian convoys but after the war never returned to sea, I never wondered about him seeing the engines but years later found out he meant he was going to the bar, you always got a good meal usually we had steak pie and there would be a small band playing music and they would take up a collection, all very exciting for wee boys.
Brilliant video Steve. Been lucky enough to taken many a trip on The Waverley, mainly from Largs but other locations around the west coast. A beautiful vessel in some of the most stunning scenery in the world.
Thanks so much Steve. All I can’t come up with is “brilliant “ . Sailed all around there in the sixties and seventies with my Dad. You had a wonderfully day for that trip cause it can get quite sporty out there.
Have just watched your fantastic film of this lovely vessel. Went on it this Jubilee weekend to Dunoon. The sun shone and it was a glorious trip, wonderful way to travel and beautiful views. Your film really captures it and I certainly want to travel on it again😀
I well recall a magical week spent Clyde Cruising with my Mum and Dad in 1956. The forward saloon of Waverley was where I first tasted poached salmon with new potatoes and fresh peas with mayonnaise. I still cook that delicious meal and remember those days. I also remember missing the pier at Tighnabruiagh on Duchess of Hamilton and having to do a 360 for a second attempt! Happy days!
Wonderful video Steve ! Brought back more than a few memories of sailing on The Waverley to Rothesay from Craigandoran (during the fair fortnight) as a kid. Seeing the engines was always the highlight of the journey.
Great video again Steve. Did the trip many a time as a wee boy. Best memory was the first Saturday of the Glasgow “Fair” in 1982. As soon as the Waverley set sail, a large number of the Glaswegian passengers headed straight for the lower bar. There they remained for most of the day. Hardly saw any of the sights you showed us. Pity, it was a lovely day. By the late afternoon all you could hear was raucous singing emanating from the lower bar. Many had to be helped off when we docked again. No problems though and a merry time was had by all. Great days. Things much more sophisticated nowadays. 🙋♂️😀
What a magnificent vessel and beautifully restored, I saw it in Glasgow once, but it wasn't operating. The engine room reminded me of a particular ferry that ran in my home city (Sydney) between the city and Manly, the SS South Steyne, built by Henry Robb of Leith in 1938. As a kid, we used to catch it between the city and Manly to go surfing, and us kids would spend the whole trip mesmerised by the triple expansion steam engine. Steve, bananas are considered bad luck on boats when going out fishing, and they were always banned on my little fishing boat. I hope you did not jinx the Waverley!! Finally the knot looks like a Turks Head Stopper, tied to stop the rope running through a block at the end of the rope.
Steve, you're surpassing yourself! Such memories of cruises aboard this iconic vessel, now happily operating again after her latest re- boilering. I first sailed on her out of Oban during my first VIC32 voyage in 1983, as the "Puffer's" owner was a friend of the then Chief Engineer. It was a beautiful voyage down the Gulf of Kerrera, through the Corryvreckan, and Mull. Later with my wife we sailed "doon the watter" as part of an unforgettable "long weekend of steam" when we also rode the Fort William- Mallaig steam train, and cruised Loch Katrine aboard the "Sir Walter Scott". That's a beautiful trip, but sadly the old steamer is currently stopped awaiting replacement of her original boiler. Tighnabruaich has memories for me as we often called in there on our voyages around the Firth of Clyde aboard VIC32. On one occasion we emulated Para Handy, crossing the Kyle to land on the far shore, and give the Maids of Bute a "wash and brush up " with fresh paint. When she comes to the Thames, "Waverley" is always a great attraction, and I've enjoyed a couple of trips "dahn Sarfend" and out to the Thames Estuary aboard her. Hopefully I may be able to do it again this autumn if she makes her scheduled visit. My own boyhood trips " doon the watter" were much shorter and far less picturesque, on the old paddle boat Woolwich Ferry. I still have memories of "Squires," " Gordon", "John Benn", and "Will Crooks", and like the Clyde, London River was far busier in those days than now, with the ferries having to cross from side to side among a traffic of sea going ships and tugs with strings of lighters. As well as the cosy engine room atmosphere which you could sample from the passenger deck, there was also the atmosphere of the Thames, stirred up by the paddle wheels, and the river was by no means as clean as it is now! Thanks again for bringing back these marvellous memories with your latest video, it's great to go 🚶♂️ with you!
Such a wonderful video, Steve! The ship is amazing, as are the views. I didn’t expect the River Clyde area to be so scenic. Some of my father’s ancestors came from (the worst parts of) Glasgow and I know I should go to look for myself how it is now. Although I assume that keeping the huge cranes as historic monuments shows how the city has changed. Your videos are absolutely beautiful. It’s a credit to you, the cameraman, and to the camera!
I remember in the late 1970,s visiting the Waverley when she was docked on the River Tees as part of the Stockton Museum service, a very special ship, thanks for sharing the video Steve.
As always so informative she looks incredible and 14knots is a fair turn of speed, the bridge was a real treat, 40 years ago it was possible to get onto the bridge of any vessel docked at Leith no one seemed to object then. Beautifully filmed as well
Wow lovely, I'm still finding your videos that fill my heart! I've seen her but didn't know she was Scottish, she comes to Dorset sometimes in the summer. Now I really want to go on her! Thanks for that lovely trip Steve, I hope you never run out of trip ideas!
Beautiful Steamer and a great weather day for it! Loving the scenery! Been enjoying all your little Europe stops Steve. Been too busy to stop and comment on your last few but just a big thank you for such wonderful videos. Love seeing new places and it sure looks like you had fun! Looking forward to the next one!
@@steve-marsh Sort of, busy painting window frames and then my sciatica flared up so you pay the price I guess. But, when all I could do was sit, it meant I got to relax and watch more of your videos so not all bad after all. You've brought much needed fun for my recovery so thank for that! Doing better now. :)
What a terrific video of an outstanding boat. Thanks especially for letting us see the bridge with the old and still functional telegraphs. Also loved seeing the reciprocating engines in action. Gee I'm glad I joined your channel!
It's first voyage of the new season and all that brass looked polished to within an inch of it's life and what looked like beautifully sanded and revarnished seating benches. Even the deck boards looked spotless.
Thank you, very well done. Very happy and cheery adventure. I hope one day my son and I can have that adventure. Never been to Scotland but my Nana was born and lived there. Thank you from your Canadian friend, Liam
She is a fine sturdy old "Lady" and at 75yrs old is a couple of years older than me! I wish that someone would give me the love and attention that gives her a new lease of life! My old Uncle told me about her on the "Tail of the Bank" when she was new, as his family lived in Helensburgh, on the north side of the Clyde. He settled in Argyll north of the river, which the Waverley covers in her tours each year. I'm so impressed with her, that I will be having a sail yearly on the old Lady! Thankyou . Tich.
Fantastic, I remember travelling as small boy on paddle steamers to I think CLACTON, I was fascinated by the engines they sit in my memory, amazing how much pace they had! All that lovely Steel , brass & copper. So much skilled work in those small ships, carpentry all beautifully built.😊
Thank you so much for this excellent video. I adore the Waverley, it holds so many childhood memories for me and for my son too. It was lovely to see her on the first outing for 2022 and the Scottish countryside, especially the Isle of Bute, where my Dad was brought up, is just stunning. How honoured were you to be able to visit the bridge! x
I hate to be a pest, and I am not a video blogger. But my wife, who is an avid photographer, wondered what kind of camera you use. She loves the clarity. Thanks!
What a beautiful ship! I have a feeling that the Waverley visited Minehead (Somerset) where I was born (despite being of Scottish descent). In my childhood, paddle steamers used to ply out of Minehead harbour and across the Bristol Channel to South Wales. Great video, as always, Steve. Tremendous scenery!
You are correct I remember getting on board at pier head Cardiff, and going across to Minehead and down the coast until turning around to go back to Cardiff, the year about 1959
Yep, you're correct the Waverley used to do a round Britain tour each year. We travelled on it round the Isle of Wight from Bournemouth Pier in the late 1970s.
Yes the Campbells ran all over the Bristol Channel, my father was on the bristol Queen in the 60s. My fathers uncle by marriage was a mate on her and got my father the job. She also used to visit Bristol but one of the local pilots said she needed a tug in the river and the Waverley couldn’t afford the tug so the Havenmaster banned her from the river unless she’s tugged up! I believe that Pilot was the son of the man who got my father the job back in the 60s.
I wish I could have travelled on the steamer. Many years ago it visited Belfast but I missed an opportunity to travel from Belfast to Glasgow on it. However, about 19 years ago we visited Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and was able to do the round lake tour on the paddle steamer. A really enjoyable holiday as we visited many other beautiful places such as Zermatt. If I ever have a chance I’ll plan to visit the Waverley. Hope it keeps going for a long time yet.
My last trip to Glasgow, my daughter and I walked the North bank of the Clyde from the Finnieston Street bridge to the Riverside Museum. What a fantastic museum that is!
Thanks for that Steve, brought a tear to my eyes, spent many days as a young boy cruising around the waters of the area. Not just on Waverley but her sister Jeannie Deans. Both sailed from Craigendorran where my grandparents lived 10 mins. walk from the piers. Helensburgh is my hometown.

Wonderful childhood memories! Oh nooooo! I'm sorry about the banana Waverley!
Awesome comment as always Hugh, and I might even join you on one of the England cruises this year! :)
Thanks so much Heather! Aye, so much to see on the Clyde, but sometimes bits of it are better from a distance than too close up :D
@@steve-marsh Sorry if our shit holes offend yer sensibilities mate.
I remember in the late 1970,s visiting the Waverley when she was docked on the River Tees as part of the Stockton Museum service, a very special ship, thanks for sharing the video Steve.
That was splendid! Thank you so much.
As always so informative she looks incredible and 14knots is a fair turn of speed, the bridge was a real treat, 40 years ago it was possible to get onto the bridge of any vessel docked at Leith no one seemed to object then. Beautifully filmed as well
Wow those were the days! Cheers David!
Wow lovely, I'm still finding your videos that fill my heart! I've seen her but didn't know she was Scottish, she comes to Dorset sometimes in the summer. Now I really want to go on her! Thanks for that lovely trip Steve, I hope you never run out of trip ideas!
A great video as always Steve, a very special ship for me,
What a beauty
Beautiful Steamer and a great weather day for it! Loving the scenery! Been enjoying all your little Europe stops Steve. Been too busy to stop and comment on your last few but just a big thank you for such wonderful videos. Love seeing new places and it sure looks like you had fun! Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks so much Janice! Hope your busy has been good busy!
Thanks so much Lynne :)
I remember my Granny taking me on Waverley in the 70s.
It's first voyage of the new season and all that brass looked polished to within an inch of it's life and what looked like beautifully sanded and revarnished seating benches. Even the deck boards looked spotless.
Made a great trip on it , love this boat , seen it so many times when i lived in Dumbarton and Later in Dalmuir !
Thank you, very well done.
Very happy and cheery adventure.
I hope one day my son and I can have that adventure.
Never been to Scotland but my Nana was born and lived there.
Thank you from your Canadian friend,
Liam
Oh Liam I really hope you get the chance, she's a wonderful boat! Aw the best mate!
@@steve-marsh Thank you Steve It sounds like you have done this run
I can not wait for this adventure.
Regards, Liam
She is a fine sturdy old "Lady" and at 75yrs old is a couple of years older than me! I wish that someone would give me the love and attention that gives her a new lease of life! My old Uncle told me about her on the "Tail of the Bank" when she was new, as his family lived in Helensburgh, on the north side of the Clyde. He settled in Argyll north of the river, which the Waverley covers in her tours each year. I'm so impressed with her, that I will be having a sail yearly on the old Lady! Thankyou . Tich.
Thanks Margaret! The volunteers who keep her running deserve a LOT of credit :)
Thank you Thank you. brough back alot of memories from 20 years ago. Will one day take my son on the Waverley.
Brought back great memories of it's frequent visits to Ilfracombe. She sure gets about for an old girl. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for this excellent video. I adore the Waverley, it holds so many childhood memories for me and for my son too. It was lovely to see her on the first outing for 2022 and the Scottish countryside, especially the Isle of Bute, where my Dad was brought up, is just stunning. How honoured were you to be able to visit the bridge! x
Hi Steve, this is the best one yet. It's almost like being on the ship itself. Can't wait to try it myself.
Cheers Chris! A trip and restoration charity well worth getting behind with a sailing next season. Thanks so much!
Thanks Barney! :)
Excellent Steve. Thank you.
Cheers Chris!
It's good to see that she's still sailing, I remember sailing on her when she was operated by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company many moons ago.
P.S. at 7:12, I’ll take both of those Crunchie bars…I can’t get them here! 😋
Couldn't agree more! ps - email me if you'd like some sent over ;)
@@steve-marsh, that’s so sweet! (You really don’t have to you know!)
@@erinmcgrathejm4985 Hey not a problem at all! A genuine offer if you fancy a crunchy-fix! :)
SO glad to bring back some happy memories Anthony!
