It's sad we even have to fear losing a job over us saying something isn't part of our job. A person in leadership who can't respect that isn't a leader.

I had a boss in hospitality once get irate with me because I suggest someone else train me instead of the 17 year old slack off she assigned. She was upset that I didn’t agree with her decision . I was respectful and asked if there was someone else that could train me because I didn’t think he was capable of giving me the tools I would need to be successful in the job

    Garcelle is two for two.
Speaking as a HR Director, Garcelle nailed it and the other ladies are 150% wrong. Directness matters and is key. The correct response in the example is "No problem Jeff, I'll let your assistant know you need coffee"
Where most employees err is thinking because they work for someone, you have to do whatever they tell you, if not you aren't a team player. By asserting yourself and being direct, it 1. Teaches them you see yourself in an elevated way from your colleagues and 2. They realize you are 100% focused on work. All of the wordy explanations about why you can't get the coffee makes you sound weak.
And in regard to the saying, Garcelle is correct. It's living your best life. Period.
This is why the show is called The Real ya'll😂

Yeah sure. That works for some. not for the rest of us. as an HR person, that's something you'll never see as you are blinded by your position. I would have never made it into management if i did anything you suggested. your job is to protect the company so i wouldnt expect you to share anything that would help employee. when I felt stuck and my career hit a plateau, it took a district vp of the fortune 500 company I work for to pull me to the side and tell me what time it was.
"corners are there for a reason. cut them".
to all the employees out there. do what you gotta do to get out of a task. that includes play dumb or purposely do it wrong. that way they won't come back and ask you. don't be direct. I am speaking as someone who was once asked to make coffee. I did. and every restroom in the building was occupied. no one asked me to make coffee again. 🙃

    • @Chaptersaudio
      @Chaptersaudio 2 года назад +10

      @@JenJHayden Whoa you didn't just say this?😂
To all those that read her post, *DON'T EVER "PLAY DUMB"* on the job or purposely make mistakes to *"CUT CORNERS!* 😱
When at work you must at all times think as if your name were on the building and on the company checks. Managers are no different than those that work for them, in terms of being human. They notice and talk about employees they like and respect vs those they don't.
So if you show you are a weak, ineffective worker, that is *EXACTLY* how you will be labeled.
If you are an employee that hits the ground running everyday, shows up on time, doesn't slack but can be trusted to do your work correctly, you communicate confidently and professionally ....you will be viewed as a trusted employee and rise in the organization.
Leaving all the slack jaw, cut corners, play dumb colleagues stuck exactly where they belong. Beneath you. 💯💯💯

I worked retail and we just signed paperwork that said that we will not go into inventory. The next day a manager asked me to go into inventory and send some stuff up. I told him, "no". He said, "I'm your superior and I'm not asking I'm telling you". I told him, "We just signed an agreement to stay out of there, no you need to get it yourself, I'll stay on the floor while you go get it". He asked, " So you want a write up"? To be honest, I have to spread awareness on the whole procastination part. I have ADHD so for me, doing tasks is extremely EXTREMELY hard... Like very hard because for people with ADHD because our executive function skills are so SO bad... Unless there's some sort of motivation involved, like if it's a test or if it's a last minute deadline, or money. Which is something I see in Jeannie to be honest and if you feel like it impairs your life, please talk to a therapist to get a diagnosis because I know for me, for the longest time I didn't know why I was struggling, why I couldn't finish tasks in time, couldn't even do the basic thing like clean my room... And it gave me severe depression and anxiety because my support system was small and everyone was judging me. Now as an adult, despite having a diagnosis it's still hard to break the habits of neurotypical people and the neurotypical mindset.
There's no shame with having a diagnosis, doesn't mean you're abnormal or strange. It's better to find out earlier on and find ways to help yourself than just struggling alone with nowhere to go!

You should absolutely be able to directly state that something is not within your job description. So long as you do this in a professional manner, it should be accepted. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in leadership roles who are just trying to show you that they are more powerful and can control you and they can be very vindictive if you challenge their authority.
Also, they usually aren’t asking you to run personal errands for them, but to take on the responsibility of another role.
If you make it a pattern to perform someone else’s duties, you can bet that the employer will continue to ask you to do that job and push your boundaries.

Adrienne and Jeannie's response would not work here. The first thing you want to do in this situation is bring it up to your manager. Tell them you have no tasks related to your job function and you feel you cannot grow and are loosing skills due to this. Ask to be put on another project where you can actually work in your field. Ask for timelines for when that can be arranged. If nothing changes after a month, look elsewhere. It's an employee's market!

What's sad about all of this, is that once more the responsibility is put on the victim rather than on the predator.
No boss should be testing who they can abuse & take advantage of. Not all of us are born fighters & ready to put others in their place. We all start young & want to do anything we can to help because we have the energy & it's wrong for anyone to miss use & abuse others.
People who do that to others should be held accountable & be reported to HR immediately. Because it creates an atmosphere of distrust, stress & we all lose out in the end, even the company because after a while no one is the willing to go the extra mile to help the company or each other.

I'm with Jeannie on declining the boss's request. Unfortunately, there are lots of taking advantage and overly using power over their subordinates these days. It is all based on your job level, experience, and how valuable to the company. If you are a valuable employee, the boss will not def do it to you or fire you if you decline or have a witty comeback. However, if you are entry-level and new. It is a def circumstance and also depends on how much you need the job. Hah! If you don't then do Lonnie's way and see if still have a job that day. The way Garcelle responded sounded more of an office setting and a higher-level job so maybe can get away. If answer like Adrienne, the boss can come back and say "Aren't you supposed to multi-task and be good at your job. Just asked you to do one little thing and you can't?" Haha! All based on the situation, your work experience, title and how valuable you are to the company.

I think when they say healing is the best revenge I think the person meant is when someone hurts us they take control of us, our emotions, our feelings our thoughts. But when we heal we retake control of those feelings and emotions which is the best revenge bc those people who hurt you most likely want you to stay down and not find healing and yourself and by doing so and healing your being and soul you take every ounce of control they once had on you. By healing you are showing you are stronger than anything they could dish at you. Healing doesn't mean taking to SM platforms but it means finding a sense of self, emotions, and mental strength :)

Personally I used to be that person who would quietly just do it. That resulted in me being overworked, disrespected, stressed, and resentful. A few years ago, I said no more and became very direct. Not disrespectful at all. But I wanted to make sure I was clear and I set the tone the FIRST time. I remember I started a job as a grant coordinator and one of the older secretaries (who was like the “unofficial boss” because of who she worked for) comes in my office the second week and tells me to make sure I get my supervisor’s (grant manager) signature on his time sheet which was her job. She actually directed me to do it, didn’t even ask at that. I am not his assistant and that was not my task. She walked out and went in her office. I didn’t feel it was beneath me or anything but that was not my job and I knew immediately that I couldn’t do that even just once because then that would be sending a message. So I went in her office 10 min later and let her know that unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to assist her with this because I was not his Secretary and she would have to arrange something directly with him if she was having difficulty getting his signature. I told her to feel free to ask my assistance on any grant related matters and I would be more than happy to assist.
I will never forget how she leaned back in her chair, looked at me and said “wow…ok I understand. I wish could set my boundaries like that”
Since I begin setting boundaries, I have been threatened with getting fired, I have had to work in hostile environments, and I even felt the need to resign because I refused to be taken advantage of. Point is, it wasn’t always a happy ending but wouldn’t change setting boundaries despite all that. Most employers get annoyed but I have seen the flicker of respect.

Being told to do something outside your job scope that you’re not being paid for is impolite. Let’s normalize saying “no”. Otherwise being polite would’ve been not to ask you to do something outside of your job description in the first place. Treat others how you want to be treated.

I feel like it depends on the environment and the position. I remember I was a trainee lawyer 10 years ago at a US law firm in Paris. One of the Of Cousel (a lady I knew and appreciated before joining that firm) asked one of her trainee to go to the supermarket to buy her some candies and he politely refused. He ended up losing his trainee position few days later... Few years later I am now Of Counsel at a family-sized law firm and I have a young associate who I adore and we are really close. Sometimes she picks up a cup of tea for me or else (even when I don't ask) and there is no particular issue with that. I did not even use it as a test... it is just sometimes you are caught up with work and you may use a little help. However, I would never ask her to do anything she is not comfortable with and if at times she is too busy, too tired or simply could not stop by the coffee shop, I won't be mad at her for that.... long story short, I believe the best is to be direct if you are not comfortable with the request (and even though it may lead you to lose your position - but let's just remember that some of us may not always afford to take the risk. It is a very tricky situation).

Isn't other duties as assigned apart of out of everyday task that's within unwritten agreement of a job function. If anything as G says Human Resources will clarify and employees questions. I think if you're content at a job and can give more than usual than that's what matters

Well nowadays they add a clause in Ur job responsibilities at the end which says basically u will do whatever addition tasks Ur manager will ask u to do. Coz alot of ppl use the job description as an excuse so now they have that clause. Everyone go read Ur contracts

I just get quiet and work on my tasks in my job description. I am too busy. Let me tell you, if your tasks within your job description are not done, that will cause you stress when they ask you why they were not completed. Be smart, be respectful.

If it has absolutely nothing to do with the job…all… if you ask me to do something that is not within my expertise find someone else who can provide those expertise I shouldn’t have to doing something that’s not required of me jsut because you’re my boss and ask me to do so & I also shouldn’t be afraid to lose my job if I say No

    Unpopular opinion.
If you're asked to do it,do it and do it well. It will eventually work in your favour. I'm a HR manager and my CEO was in the middle of a virtual meeting and asked me randomly I'm starving and I have some medication to take and I asked him if I could order him something and he said yes. On my way back I grabbed him some water. And went back to what I was doing. Trust me he knows it's not my job. I have a master's degree. He is very aware it's not my job. But that what being a part of the team is. Sometimes you do the unflattering jobs to move things along. Ofcourse if it becomes repetitive you may set boundaries. But please be open to doing what you can to move things around.

Hahahahha I'm sorry I'm sorry... but I'm just 0.26 secs in and Im like... "Uhm...what if YOU'RE THE ASSISTANT??" Thank God I'm already out of situations like that but I still felt like it was not my job to bring my boss coffee as her Exec. Assistant. One thing is to be at the coffee shop yourself and offer to get your boss coffee sometimes as a nice gesture but... NO

I think that’s would be something that would be spoken about prior to accepting and prior to offering the job. Who gets her lunch and coffee etc runs errands ?

  • @mjb48219
    @mjb48219 2 года назад

The example of getting coffee is kind of old. Almost no manager will ask that in 2022. But they may ask you to organize the department’s holiday party or be the scribe in a meeting. Please never actual say “it’s not in my job description”, that doesn’t land well. You could say I don’t have capacity or something similar.

Unless I am your PERSONAL assistant, I am not getting your personal meals and beverages. Most of the time in professional work setting when we talk about assistants, we are talking about Administrative or Executive Assistants. This is NOT the same as personal assistant, so if I am someone’s AA or EA, I am not fetching your personal meals. My job is handling meals as far as catering for meeting or events, not running to Starbucks or the local cafe for your lunch. So, don’t defer to their assistant unless it is their PERSONAL assistant.
