I wish the newer version just updated this 114270 and did away with the other changes. Ideal watch would be a slightly updated bracelet (keep the hollow links, add a micro adjust, no to the aggressive taper, no to 19 mm), update the mvmt, update the lume, no to the font changes. The problem with the new explorer is that it is distinctly less classical-looking to my eye. It looks more bulbous at its head and the aggressive taper gives a feminine look to a decidedly masculine sports watch. I just don't understand why they did what they did
It will hopefully not take too long. I got my 124270 in December 2021 after only one month of requesting it from my AD. Granted, it might’ve had helped that I had already purchased two Omegas at the same jewelry.
I also bought a Rolex from Chrono24 for a " milestone birthday." I chose a 36mm oyster perpetual with white dial. I like it for the same reasons: it's perfect size, it's classic, it can be worn for many occasions, and it actually flies under the radar (nobody has ever asked me "is that a Rolex?" Great vid.
Lucky you. Nobody ever asked me: "Is that a Rolex?". A few probably wanted to ask, but then they saw how introverted I was and didn't want me to self-combust on the spot.
I love the elegance of the 36 but I picked up the Explorer 40 just after my wedding and I absolutely love it. I’d tried on the 36 several times in the months leading to my purchase, but I just fell in love with the 40 and it’s been my daily wear ever since. From surfing to business meetings - it’s never not been the right thing to have on my wrist. Not too flashy, not too casual, I’ve not regretted picking it up or wished I’d purchased any other watch. Though I still want a Santos at some point…
I have the 14270 and every time I put it on think, I should wear this more often. It is exceptionally comfortable for every day wear. Thanks for the video.
Saved up a summer of working at 15 and bought my first Rolex, a 1974 6694 Oyster Precision. Now 20, looking to grab my second to celebrate my transition to adulthood while in college. Thanks for the video, solidified that the Explorer is the right choice for me
I only ever wanted one Rolex, and that was the 36mm Explorer. I put my name down at a local AD and to my surprise they called me 6 months later and it was mine! I’ve worn it daily since and I genuinely don’t feel like I need another watch. Sure I have other watches, but 9 days out of 10 I reach for the Explorer.
Short story- mid 2015, my late dad and me are checking out watches, Seiko off course 🤷🏼♂️. I am blown away by the Astron Sse060, yet I’m mumbling “ahh, too expensive, this will never happen”.. Start of 2016, I’m on a hospital bed in the cardiac intensive care, after having a full heart attack, and a life saving procedure. My dad sits on the bed and says two things- first, “you’re a bum and that’s why it happened to you”. (I’m not, honestly😉) Secondly, “I bought you a watch for your 40th birthday”, and he showed me on his phone what he ordered for me. My dad is gone now. That watch is my most prized material possession. That’s the piece that ignited the passion, and starting a collection with that piece was my way to respect and continue his passion.

I bought my 214270 (the 39mm version) back in 2018 on a trip to Japan; love it now as much as I did when I first tried it on. But your point about sizing is spot-on; it’s entirely a personal thing as to what size you prefer. If the newest 36mm had been available at the time I bought my 39, I would have gone back and forth, but I love how that particular watch looks ON ME. I love the Explorer, and have tried three side by side (36mm, 39mm & 40mm) at a RedBar event. All lovely, but the 40mm worked best for me, and love the new lumed numerals. So when the opportunity came up recently to get one at retail, I got… an Air King 126900 🤣All the Explorer vibe, plus that quirky dial… I love it 😍Keep up the great work on your channel, great videos and my kind of humour 👍
Great content sir! I wear my old 1992 14270 skiing, hiking, diving to 25m, tennis etc. I bought it used in late 90s. It's a fabulous watch for almost any occasion.I service it every 7 years and it run -1s/day. Not bad for 32 years old. The prices now are crazy though
I bought one of the new 36mm Explorers a few months ago after a 6 month wait. Love it. I have to force myself not to wear it so that my other watches don’t get too sad. My only minor gripe is timekeeping. My other watches are Omega and they all only ever gain 1-2 seconds a day. My Explorer loses 1-2 secs a day, which feels significant compared to the Omegas. I find myself constantly checking how “slow” it is when in reality it’s irrelevant.
You, my friend, are one of the reasons I’m always wary about posting something. I have 42mm watches, I have 35mm vintage watches. Both sizes work for me. Why trivialize my comment with your negativity?
I recently bought (then returned) a 114270. Your video’s definitely encouraged me at the time I was looking into one. Ultimately I let it go because it wasn’t in the condition I wanted (too overpolished). However, I noticed some things that bother me. It’s not really a strap monster like people say. The lug holes are SO close to the case there’s no way to easily fit 3rd part straps. Sure you could get angled spring bars but I felt like the angle of the spring bar tips would eat away at the lugs over time. Also, there’s basically no AR like you said. Lastly, it’s a bit plain, which I know is the selling point for symmetry lovers. After a month with it I let it go, but videos like yours sure make me reconsider!
Actually, you dont really need curved spring bars. I used thinner spring bars and it works for nato straps without scratching/destroying them. But you are right, its not a strap monster as it takes some effort to remove the bracelet..
@@yusufbest4475 Oh nice, I did not think about trying thinner spring bars. I'm sure that helps it with some nato straps, maybe thicker ones would still get frayed? And curious if that would also impact leather straps getting scraped by the case as well. I can understand from Rolex's perspective that they only want you to use the bracelet, which is a great bracelet. However, I just enjoy the freedom to change things up every now and then.
Thanks for the video. Your 11470 Explorer is very nice. I happen to have the Explorer 214270. In 2010, if I was among the Rolex top management who had a vote, I would have definitely voted against moving away from the 36mm case. However, I am a post 2010 Explorer owner. But when the 114270 was released, I decided not to go with it and kept my 39mm. My Explorer is fine by me. It is part of my basic rotation and I very much enjoy wearing it. Enjoy the journey.
Got the new 36mm to celebrate getting engaged… go back and forth between thinking it’s too small or wears well for my 7.25” wrist but something just cool about the design and proportions of the 36mm version
I've been captivated by the Explorer since I first saw the 1016. There is something about the 3-6-9- dial. I went to my AD the day the 124270 was announced. Still waiting...
@@matthiaskettner6686 WHERE!? I'm in Los Angeles/Beverly Hills, so maybe that has an effect on availability. I drop by my AD every now and again to make sure they know I'm ready to buy whenever they have one for me. I visited a Wempe in NYC in July, and they had the 39 Explorer, but no 36s.
I'm currently on "the list" for the new Explorer 40mm, eagerly anticipating the call from my authorized dealer any moment now. Upon trying on the 36mm variant in-store, I found it to be too small for my wrist, which measures 7.2 inches in circumference. While I acknowledge that the ideal watch size is largely subjective, I personally find that the 36mm model appears disproportionately small on many wrists. Additionally, for individuals with a taller and more robust physique (such as myself), a slightly larger watch tends to complement the wrist more harmoniously - again, this is my subjective assessment. Anyways, regardless of size, I adore the Explorer. It epitomizes the perfect everyday watch, and anyone fortunate enough to own one should count themselves truly blessed. Thank you for the excellent video, it's always a pleasure to listen to your insightful (and funny) comments.
I am of a similar physical disposition (from the sound of it) and agree. I ended up getting an Explorer II 226570, but if the Explorer 40 had been out when I went on the list, I might have gone for that. I liked the old 39mm too. I like that people have a choice now. If you're a bigger size or prefer bigger watches, get the 40. If not, get the 36. Can't we all just get along?
I like the older thinner font too. The new ones look ok in video, but just seem gaudy in person. The uke in the background greatly increases my appreciation of your commentary.
Great video...its about you and what you want out of you're watch...I bought my 1016 new in 1990 and have worn it 24/7 95% of the time since...its on a rubber strap most of the time as i where it as it should be ...swimming, hiking, tobogganing, running mud heroes, riding both my mountain bike and motorcycle....and yes even have worn it playing ice hockey...the thing about sports watches needing to be larger?! if I'm wearing a watch playing any sport i want it to be out of the way but clearly legible ... i.e. a 36mm Explorer! Wear your watch, Enjoy your watch!
Good to see this video. I bought my 114270 after watching your previous videos several times along with Adrian Barkers. I hadn't seen it in person and probably would have not bought it if I had seen it in a store before I met up with the seller. He had my deposit so I figured f*ckit. My first reaction was "wow, that's small." I've been wearing it for a few months now and it's really growing on me. I have the same 7 1/8 wrist and while it takes time to adjust after I've been wearing a 42mm Oris flieger daily for the past 11 years, I love how it just disappears on the wrist. Simple and understated. I never thought a bracelet could be so comfortable. Thanks for the great content. I'm looking forward to the next update.
The shot of your wrist at 0:14 really conveys the true size of the watch. Moat people take a shot too close to the camera, making it a giant watch. (which it isn't)
Great video 👏🏻 After a looonf time looking for the one watch to keep my choice fell on the Explorer 36. Now I wait (and wait) until the AD calls 😅 Perhaps soon the second coolest dude in the room 💪🏻
I have a Cronos Explorer homage. It's 39mm. It's also available in 36mm size, and this video makes me curious to try how it feels on my 6,7 inch wrist.
Love your videos. I have this watch and love it and my wrist is 7.5”. I never take it off the bracelet which is perfect. I also have the same Panerai you have. Keep up the tremendous work.
Its fantastic....in have a the current steel 36mm version....catch myslef admiring islt very often....your lucky to have that watch....May you enjoy if for many more years ti come
Was wearing my 124270 when I ran across this video, which is not shocking because there’s a 90%+ everyday that it makes it’s way on my wrist. I love it! It’s by far the most comfortable watch I own (well…except a smaller G-Shock I own…) Regarding the bracelet on the newest 36mm reference, a lot of people fail to mention that the CLASP is 16mm…yes the bracelet tapers to 14mm, but the CLASP is still 16mm. So, logically, if you have a watch that has a bracelet which has, say, a 20mm to 16mm taper (which basically everyone loves…) with a butterfly deployant clasp…well that is going to wear the same as the bracelet on the 124270, except around the articulation creases of your wrist it’s 14mm, which only enhances the comfort IMO, but stops short of looking “odd” regarding proportions. Watch nerds comments. Yes.
I know this is going to sound weird but hear me out... the 36mm Explorer is the best looking watch to wear with long sleeve shirts but the worst looking watch with short sleeves. Like YoureTerrific, I too have a 7 INCH WRIST (mine's actually slightly larger than 7 inches so.. better?) and owned a 114270 for several years. I live in a warmer climate and wear short sleeves for three or four months of the year and every year I had to put this watch in the box due to how bad it looked with short sleeve shirts. I can't explain it. Maybe I look weird with short sleeves? I dunno but I couldn't get over it and sold it. I want one every winter and then I remember what they looked like with short sleeve shirts and don't. Odd. It was odd.
I actually 100% agree, I sold my 124270 and only miss it during the two cold months I get per year. I don't have huge wrists but do have long arms and it just looked like a dainty bracelet.
At 38 years old (in 3 weeks) I’m heavily contemplating what will I get myself to mark that moment in my life. Your journey resonates too much with mine. Taking notes 😂
Awsome video. The Explorer is pretty much my dream watch. Like you say, the elegance and versatility of the Explorer is simply outstanding. Stealth wealth. The only thing that would make it better (for me) would be a cyclops-free date at 3'oclock, but I doubt Rolex will ever do that.
I have the current 36mm Explorer. Love it, BUT it has the worst lume of any watch I own. To the point, I was going to take it back to the AD to see if it was a fault. Nice look at yours 👍
I have this one, I completely love it. This, my Tudor date/day prince 2tone gold dial, and my Blue Breitling super ocean 42. I am finally relaxed about my collection. (Lots of seikos and Casios on top) but, my collection is feeling pretty right for a few months now. Whew lol.
I recently picked up one from 2005 and the only con I have is that I don’t want to wear anything else in the collection. I’m familiar on the honeymoon face but this watch is so perfect that it seriously makes me reconsider having anything else. Do you find yourself gravitating towards it more than other watches after having it for 3 years? Greta video!
Love the watch! One question I have for anyone who knows, is if you are worried about buying a watch, particularly a Rolex watch on Chrono24 without inspecting it in real life first. I say this because, as we know, many can be overpolished and sometimes it's hard to notice this in pictures. And even if they have a good return policy, if you buy a watch from halfway across the world, returning it will cost you a decent amount of money. How do you manage this issue with buying online?
"I don't [make] videos for you. I don't even know you, man." These are the best lines from the video. Youre Terrific is a truth-teller.
And the other thing....The old thinner font is just so elegant.
Yep, good call.

But when the 114270 was released, I decided not to go with it and kept my 39mm. My Explorer is fine by me. It is part of my basic rotation and I very much enjoy wearing it. Enjoy the journey.
Thanks for the subconscious song recommendation at the end of the video!
It’s crazy how much smaller the case looks on a strap compared to the bracelet.
Coriolis effect, right? Wait. [checks notes] That can't be right.
@@YoureTerrific the only time I heard that term used was on that sniper mission in COD Modern Warfare lol
You've forced me to look at more neo-vintage pieces now. Thanks, 7" Evan.
Got the new 36mm to celebrate getting engaged… go back and forth between thinking it’s too small or wears well for my 7.25” wrist but something just cool about the design and proportions of the 36mm version
I have a 6.5” wrist and I have Daytona , subs and GMT but the one is my 1016 explorer I from 1967 , great video BTW
Great video, agree with all your points. Chose the 114270 last year for all the same reasons.
I've been captivated by the Explorer since I first saw the 1016. There is something about the 3-6-9- dial. I went to my AD the day the 124270 was announced. Still waiting...
You are still waiting? This watch can even be bought by new customers in reasonable time now 🤔
@@matthiaskettner6686 WHERE!? I'm in Los Angeles/Beverly Hills, so maybe that has an effect on availability. I drop by my AD every now and again to make sure they know I'm ready to buy whenever they have one for me. I visited a Wempe in NYC in July, and they had the 39 Explorer, but no 36s.
@@matthiaskettner6686 Where are these dealers? I'm in Los Angeles, so maybe there are just too many customers here?
@@kevinkohler2750 yeah maybe. I‘m in a small town in Germany, so things are probably different.
Brilliant looking watch, well done
My dady bought one NKUWAN and he loves it. It had been there for over 10 years when he went out with it.
What an amazing outcome for a beautiful watch. Always a pleasure to see mamacoo work your magic. Thanks for sharing this transformation with us!
wearing that 36mm loose on a bracelet looks great on you man. Thanx for videos that you made for you.
Love the new video style ❤
Good one. Also your sense of humor is great :)
I'm looking forward to the next update.
the explorer is like the perfect rolex for me. i’m definitely buying one within a few years
The shot of your wrist at 0:14 really conveys the true size of the watch. Moat people take a shot too close to the camera, making it a giant watch. (which it isn't)
I'd like to see a video just like this with your original purchase of the GMT and maybe why you got rid of your Sub.
Looks great on your 6.5" wrist. Would be too small for 7" or larger wrists though.
I'm sure you're right.
@@IDKline , Poor Mr. Terrific.
Another great video 👏 I also love my 114270❤
Good stuff, Evan.
Great video 👏🏻 After a looonf time looking for the one watch to keep my choice fell on the Explorer 36. Now I wait (and wait) until the AD calls 😅 Perhaps soon the second coolest dude in the room 💪🏻
I especially agree the explorer 36 doesn't work well on a nato for wrists your size. This watch is really made for the bracelet imho
I have a Cronos Explorer homage. It's 39mm. It's also available in 36mm size, and this video makes me curious to try how it feels on my 6,7 inch wrist.
That's a lovely petite watch for dainty wrists.
If a classic black and white grand piano could be a watch for a day it would look like this
For me the perfect size the 214270 39mm because well it's the one I own and I think it's amazing for me!
I had to wind back to check whether you said "30" or "40"...so you're doing something right 👍😉
Love your videos. I have this watch and love it and my wrist is 7.5”. I never take it off the bracelet which is perfect. I also have the same Panerai you have. Keep up the tremendous work.
Love the 30 Rock reference.
Same
Its fantastic....in have a the current steel 36mm version....catch myslef admiring islt very often....your lucky to have that watch....May you enjoy if for many more years ti come
Thanks. Many years? Again, depends on the RUclips comments.
Sold my speedy...i want this Explorer....it is too good
At 38 years old (in 3 weeks) I’m heavily contemplating what will I get myself to mark that moment in my life. Your journey resonates too much with mine. Taking notes 😂
I prefer the proportions of your Explorer over the newer 124270.
Cool. I love Rothko's work.
I have the current 36mm Explorer. Love it, BUT it has the worst lume of any watch I own. To the point, I was going to take it back to the AD to see if it was a fault. Nice look at yours 👍
I like how the lume has aged a bit in contrast with the white paint on the numerals
Best video of 2024! (For me)
Hey great video, I was just wondering where you got your grey nato strap from? It looks really good against the black dial.
Okay the 'spontaneous combustion after reading the youtube comments' deserves two likes
Love the dry humor. Great video. Let’s start from the start. The start. Hahaha
The older explorer looks way more elegant than the newer one. I got a 2001 14270.
I have this one, I completely love it. This, my Tudor date/day prince 2tone gold dial, and my Blue Breitling super ocean 42. I am finally relaxed about my collection. (Lots of seikos and Casios on top) but, my collection is feeling pretty right for a few months now. Whew lol.
It’s a nice watch. Changing my view about watch owning.
There’s a P serial 14270 - the same but in the 5 digit line.
Great video, help with my decision to purchase the new Rolex Explorer 40. Thank you for your insight. Cheers
Ever since I bought a watch from amzwatch , My question is if it's this hard to tell them apart, what is the point of owning an authentic watch?
