I am so glad that this video exists. Not because we need it in any way but just to highlight exactly how terrible we are as watch enthusiasts! Can you imagine someone who has no clue watching this video and just shaking their head the entire time 😂
@@YoureTerrific Me IRL. Bought my 114270 a bit before the 124270 release. I have since whittled a collection down to nothing, and I can safely say I wear an Explorer every day. After having felt the 124270, I am in love with the tapered bracelet. But I've since added a "glidelock homage" which I found online onto my Explorer's bracelet--which I must add works really well--and as I have solid end-links, the bracelet feels solid enough that easy-link isn't really much of a selling point. I honestly have no idea.
At first the 124270 seems too small especially on the bracelet taper, but after owning it for 5 months, it totally changes my preference of watch sizes and I could comfortably say that this is the perfect Rolex for me.
that's the experience of many who usually wore 40mm+ watches, I like wearing the Sub with the maxi case etc but the 36mm Explorer wears like a dream and I now prefer to wear it when I don't want to be too concerned or care about the watch I'm wearing.
I owned both of them. The 124270 sat differently on my wrist, and it felt thicker and chunkier than the 114270. Ultimately, I felt warm and fuzzy every time I wore the the 114270, so I sold the 124270 and got the older model serviced at RSC, which made it look and feel brand new again. And the best part was that the crystal on the 114270 was scratched, so I paid ~$100 to have it replaced. Guess what? RSC put a new anti-reflective crystal on it! 😀 I sometimes miss the full lumed numbers on the newer model, but other than that…I love my 114270.
@@jonwlo If needed, RSC replaces older parts with new parts unless you specifically request they not do it. At some point, they must have decided to add an anti-reflective coating to the replacement crystal for the 114270. It says anti-reflective replacement crystal with the part number on my service receipt.
@@521tifosi That is SO cool! I have an 114270 too and maybe I can get them to put one in mine. Do you like it? Do you think it makes a big difference? Can you please send me a picture of your watch with the new crystal?
@@jonwlo When I bought it (used), the original crystal was scratched, so it's not really fair for me to say that the new crystal is better than the old one. It seems slightly less reflective than the older crystal. If light hits it at a certain angle, you'll still get a glare, and it's the same with the 124270.
I've owned both. Sold the 124270 after a few months due to most of the things that you highlight. However, I have a 6.5inch wrist and I didn't find the 124270 to be comfortable. I tried swapping in/out links, different micro adjustment holes, easy-link open/closed and I just couldn't get the right fit. Reasons I prefer the 114270: + the numerals and hour markers are smaller which I think makes the watch looks classier. When I look at the new explorer, all I see is lume. When I look at the 114270, it's the white gold surrounds that catch my eye. I prefer the finer text also. + lighter bracelet due to the hollow centre links means I don't need to get as perfect a fit on the watch. It's comfortable for me hanging a bit loose where as with the extra weight of the newer watch I found it to be uncomfortable moving around on the wrist. If you want to get a perfect fit you're more likely to get it on the 114270 (6 micro adjustment holes vs 3 on the 124270) + the thinner bezel and wider bracelet looks better IMO and blends the watch into the bracelet instead of making the watch head look bigger on the newer one as you pointed out. + cheaper :) As for the improvements of the newer one: *Movement: My 2009 Explorer is +1s/day. I don't need 70hrs of power reserve, especially for a time only watch. *AR coating: The lack of AR on the 114270 is a non-issue for me. Infact, perhaps it's part of the reason why I like the dial of the 114270 better, as more light can pass and catch on the white gold surrounds? *Bracelet: No doubt about it, a modern Rolex bracelet feels fantastic to hold in the hands, but on the wrist, the extra bit of 'flex' from the older bracelets leaves it much more comfortable on the wrist. Again, the new clasp might look superior but I prefer the older one with 6 micro adjustment holes. Easy-link is good in theory but 5mm extension is too much. *Lume: Overrated. Looks good in a lumeshot but the only time I would find it useful is if I wake up in the night and it has usually faded by that point anyway.
I totally agree with you. I had sold my 2004 last year in order to buy the new one. While in try it at the AD , i felt the new version seems small on my wrist. I can not explain how I was regretful to sell it. Currently I bought a pre-owned BB36 and still try to look for a old version explorer.
@@BB-gl7zt Thank you...I could go on as I've obsessed over the Explorer for years. I was just saying to a mate the other day that I was going to make a video on the comparing the too as I don't think anyone else really addressed what I felt was so obvious. @YoureTerrific does a fantastic job of doing it here. Newer doesn't always mean better. Not hating on the 124270 btw. I can appreciate this modern take on the Explorer too but the 114270 just ticks all of my boxes.
Ive handled both, own the new one. They are both excellent. The new one is definitely a modern take on a classic, where the old has some charm that can't be replicated with modern Rolex materials and design. I think they knocked it out of the park with the new one, but that's just one guys opinion. I can see personal preference leaning people one way or the other. For me, the 19mm lug width, while tough for straps, just looks better proportionally on a 36mm watch. But the update that they made with the 214270 was exactly what I wanted, minus inflating the whole watch(case size, font, etc). So the 124270 was a god sent. All your points can be validated depending on the person. Moral of the story for me, is I got one at retail while the 114270 was selling for as much or more. Crazy times in the market made for a no brainer for me. They are both excellent. 🙌
I thoroughly enjoy everything about your videos. Your photography, your pacing, and your delivery all combine to make your content very watchable and re-watchable. And might I add that you incorporate wrist shots! Not only super close ups of the piece but how it wears on the wrist connected to a body. It makes a difference when we can see the proportions. Well done.
Those side by side shots really highlight the thicker font used on the current Explorer. I think I prefer the slightly more airy layout of the old one. Gosh, I love geeking out over the most pointless stuff. 😅
I ended up getting the 124270 earlier this year.. I love the newer crystal and longer power reserve. Heck even the bracelet is awesome- its robust yet somehow just disappears on the wrist. I love it. Maybe its the taper. At first I was a bit thrown off by the thicc lume on the new one, but now it looks just right! I love mine, and if anyone has an opportunity to buy one- do so, you won't regret it.
7:49 what a classy yet savage take 🤣 amen wear what you want and makes you look/feel good. And I'd say the 114270 is the preference, but mixing the new bracelet and clasp would make it perfect!
This video has what I wanted when the 12470 first came out: extensive side by sides of the two watches. I had both the 14270 and later the 114270. I wish I had kept the latter but had been wearing it as a dress watch and replaced it with the a Patek 3796. Ideally, Rolex would revive the 1016, keeping the printed dial, rounded Arabics, proportions but with a SEL bracelet and better shock-absorbing but things are not ideal. Great vid!
I bought my 114270 about a year before they announced the 124270 and was in a similar situation. But after seeing comparisons of the two I came to the same conclusion as you. The 114270 is not as robust or advanced as the new Explorer, but there's an old school elegance about it that I absolutely adore.
I have the new 40 but people are so quick to “update” and it’s never ending. Whether the 40 remains the latest and greatest forever I’m just going to hold on to it and enjoy it. Service if needed. I’d do the same if I had the last generation or if my first were the next
I prefer the 39mm but I prefer the upgraded movement in the 36mm. So neither is a ‘bullseye’ for me. I’d be interested if they brought back the 39mm with the new movement.
@@davidofglenbrook4487 A perfect comparison! 😂 The ‘old’ movement is still a superlative chronometer. How much more of an improvement is a newer movement really. You lose one less second over a day or two. Great!!
I purchased my “vintage” 2002 114270 two weeks ago. Needless to say, I’m smitten. It gets so many things right compared to the 124270: the smaller indexes, the green lume, the 20mm lugs, lighter font, and lighter bracelet that doesn’t taper as much. Sure, I’d appreciate if the smaller 114270 Arabic indexes were ACTUALLY lumed, the fancy rehaut, and I wouldn’t mind 70 hrs of power reserve. But those are so minor, I am very glad for my decision. Besides, part of the fun of watch collecting to me is, after identifying the watch you want, hunting for a great deal with box and papers. I ended up finding an unpolished 2002 K series with box and papers via Instagram. Happy watch wearing!
Great video! I always had 3 showstoppers that stopped me from taking rolex seriously as a no compromise watch: - Movement - AR coating - Lume. As you adroitly put, this watch addresses all 3 of those areas. I can't find anything wrong with the new one.
Great video and valid points. Glad you eventually got the explorer. :) I prefer the new one, seems better to me in every way. But there is no wrong here, both are great watches. Once you get familiar with the 19mm bracelet and taper, anything larger appears unnecessarily big imo. At least on my 6,5” wrist. Absolutely love my 124270. :)
I’m sorry to say this but YES. You bought wrong. The new model is a friggin home run! Vintage size with all of the modern features. Movement, solid links, burly clasp, ez link. It’s my favorite watch by a mile
Check at 1:28, and you'll clearly see why he chose the right one, the 114270. Its design is simply better. Don't get me wrong, I'm someone who prefers new watches over vintage ones, but when it comes to design and the old clasp, the older model is superior. I don't like the thick 369 on the new one, but I'm still planning to get the new model soon.
@@thepickyreviewer have you actually worn the watch? i ask because even tho it is thinner at the clasp it is MUCH more substantial feeling that the prior version and balances out the head of the watch with perfection
There are a lot of reports of the 32XX series movements losing balance amplitude, and slowing down. I am like you, and have an older model, but might one day get the new one.
Excellent comparison. Brilliant shots. Well executed dimensions on screen. Appreciate your time on this. As much as I prefer the old dimension I can’t bring myself to pay almost MSRP for the older version carrying someone’s else’s wear and tear and mileage on the watch.
My daily is a black bay 36. We have the same size wrist. It’s the perfect size and classic. Never had anyone say to my face, “is that a womens watch?” Looks perfect on you 👍🏼
A couple of hours ago I've finally got one as well, just like yours from 2004. This video has deepened my conviction that I have purchased the right one. Thank you!
No... no you didn't.. This is similar to my IWC dilemma... bought the Mark 16 instead of the new 20 ... I'll take the older any day. More unique, more elegant
Thanks to your comparison video and having experience both Explorers in hand, I went with the 114270. Sure the movement is a generation behind and the clasp is not as sturdy as the new one.. but the overall feel and package of the 114270 is perfect. I just love how the older dial looks. The proportion feels right. I don't like how the rehaut looks on the newer Explorer.. it makes it even more busier than it has to be. The older 114270 wears beautifully with the broader and less aggressive tapering bracelet. It feels like a proper luxury/tool watch fusion. Been on my wrist since. What an absolute joy!
Same, I already have the 116610 and the 116710blnr with the maxi case and sturdy bracelets, I went with the 114270 instead of the 124270 and the bracelet is actually a welcome change and I now prefer it for everyday wear.
I went through nearly the same conundrum as you. I registered my interest for the new Explorer with my AD the day it was announced. After nearly a year of the AD telling me there was no way they could tell me if I would EVER get one, I broke down and bought a 114270. Then, a few months later (last month), I got a call that they had one for me, which I had to decline. For me, the reason I know this was the right decision is the ROLEX letters around the rehaut. I think that is such a LOUD design choice on modern Rolexes. It reminds me of fashion brands who use their logo as the actual design of their product. I realize that's just my taste, but to me it's one of the big visual differentiators between the two watches.
The older one is my daily wearer and I love it to bits. I had a chance to buy the new one but side by side the things that bothered me were the larger numerals and bracelet taper that makes it look small on the wrist. The 20mm oyster bracelet of the 112470 makes the look iconic and the longer lugs make the bracelet look integrated. The older one also has a vintage vibe to it that the new one just can’t pull off. The font is also smaller which makes it more understated.
@@crunkmonkeys770 I have had my 124270 ..36mm since September, the watch looks amazing, and I love it. The latest design bracelet is very comfortable with a much improved sturdier clasp, and the 70 hour power reserve is nice to have.
I agree with the vintage vibe, the new dial with crown at 6 o'clock just kinda make it disassociated with rolex heritage even though it has been reverted to the classic size. I realized that the old dial design is what make it so nostalgic and familiar, something that you look at everyday on your wrist.
Correctly calibrated calipers - say that 3 times fast. I agree with the observation on dial proportions (though I’m in the camp that they never should have abandoned the 1016-style numerals in the first place).
Oh i'm still in the "got my 214270 4 months before the new one came out" phase of wondering which I'd prefer with my angel hair pasta wrists. I love mine, but... This kinda helps me appreciate what I have, so thank you Evan! Glad you are content as well. Definitely pros and cons...(i wish I had AR)
My wife gave me a 2000 114270 as a wedding gift in 2015. She knew I liked Rolex and knew I would want the most boring one possible. She also knew I made comments about so many watches being too chunky. Anyway, after wearing it almost daily for the past 8 years, I'd for sure have a real uncanny valley feeling wearing the new one. Great video!
if something like that happens to be , id be devastated. it's kindda like buy a over priced steel daytona from grey market, and very next day, I get a call from AD that my daytona is here to be picked up. humm maybe not the same. it would drive me nuts to see if I made the right pick but there is no right answer. it would drive me nuts.
Great review of the two Explorers! I have a one watch collection, a 2007 114270. I absolutely love it on my 7.5-inch wrist. If I were to purchase another watch, it would definatly be the 124270. I love all the upgrades. I will never get rid of my 114270, in saying that, it would mean I would have a two-watch collection. Thanks for sharing your thoughts this absolute beauty of a timepiece. :)
36mm..... meh....... Explorer...... Nuh uh....... not for me. But I can genuinely see how much you're enjoying yours through your video and it brings a smile to my face. I don't get the Explorer craze, but as a WIS, I can/do appreciate it. 31xx movement is probably safer too! Lot's of fuss about the 32xx movement. Oh and the newer one is better and it's def a women's watch..... OR...... is it? 😉
I saw zero difference at first. But you successfully teased out every fine difference from the old to the new. Really made me think. Good job. You can't go wrong w either.
Same! However, I had about 3 months of bliss with my 114270 before Rolex dropped the news of their updated explorer. I still have yet to get a chance to do a side-by-side, but I've had no regrets. This video reaffirms that.
I have the 114270. It's obviously very close but I honestly prefer the classic proportions of the older watch. Newer Rolexes are just slightly chunkier.
I have the 214270 and I seem to love 39mm case size more, although it’s not the true explorer size experience. Only thing is that I wish the dial fonts were thinner.
Pro and cons for both...I have the 114270 and can't see myself changing this for the new one...one thing that not often gets mentioned. The older movements are dead quiet, the newer generation has a much louder rotor. As a lover of handwound movements, the absence of almost any rotor noise was something I always appreciated on my 214270 and 114270.
Isn't this because of the ball bearings on the rotor of the new one? Which is supposed to decrease wear and tear and increase service intervals. Again, pros cons, what's worth more to ya.
7:09 Is there a groove on the inside of the endlink that fits into that cutout in the case? If so, I think that's a great idea to fight endlink-jiggle over time. If not, I wonder what it's purpose is.
The difference is immense when you put them next to each other. Of course, you can still tell the difference even viewing them separated although you couldn’t probably point out the details but this video has clarified the differences in a second.
Went through the same process as you. After wearing them interchangeably for 6 months I kept the 114270 and sold off the newer one. Just more comfortable and feels so right!
I‘ve been a follower for a long time but this is the first time I‘m commenting. I really enjoy your content and your humor. This video was particularly informative as I‘m in the process of buying an Explorer 36 for my wife. Funnily enough, although she’s not into watches, but being an architect and designer, just by showing her a few screenshots from your video she concurred that the 114270 is the more aesthetically pleasing, balanced and „timeless“ watch between the two. And I fully agree, if I’d be buying for myaself I’d go neo-vintage too. Looks like I will be doing some pre-owned shopping. Thank you very much for your work 🙏
I bought the new one. I considered both, but new movement won out. Also, the blue lume. I didn't consider the bracelet taper, but it's really fantastic for comfort
I really like the 36 mm Explorer. However, my wife actually says that it looks too small on my wrist, and I have a 6.5" wrist. Also, awesome video as always.
Great video as always! Only push back I would have is to say that the 32xx movement is a clear upgrade. On paper, sure, it has benefits. But its long term reliability is still a big unknown. There are many, many reports of chronic timekeeping issues impacting this family of movement and to date Rolex does not seem to have a confirmed fix. I don't think we know yet whether this will be a movement that we can all rely on 10, 20 years down the road, or if this will end up being the rare misstep from the crown.
Great video. I own a 14270 and a 124270. Love them both, but prefer the new one. Effortless to wear with a fantastic bracelet. Easy link is very useful on a hot day (I wear it loose to start with, but my wrist still expands in the heat and humidity of the summer). Fantastic lume and accuracy (consistently runs - 0.5 sec/day). 36mm Explorers are great watches, they are the perfect everyday Rolex if you have the wrist for them.
At 19mm, feels more tailored to dimensions. If its a one watch or small collection, id go with the newer. If its to be one of a many watch collection Id go with older for strap versalility. Both look great tho
it's a bit like trying to decide 'Breaking Bad' or 'Better call Saul'. Both are better in some respects, but glad that you experienced both, and honestly, happy they both exist.
Thank you for making this video. I bought a 2005 Explorer I right around when you did, and I had the same exact concern. Your assessment matches mine. Much as I appreciate the new model -- it's a wonderful watch -- I'm happy with the Explorer I have, very happy. It's a watch that has grown on me. It has my wrist. It's my most expensive watch, but also my beater. I don't mind nicking it, knocking it around. It's somehow incorruptible, always okay, drawing you in with that deep black dial, rimmed markers, and gorgeous hands...especially the seconds hand that has exquisite proportions. I'm never giving it up, and I look forward to handing it down when the time comes.
I’m planning on getting my 1st Rolex for my 40th next year! Love the video. And personally I like your Explorer better. The indices and numerals are smaller and more understated 👍🏾
No such thing as a wrong Explorer. I think they are all great and now everyone regardless of wrist size can enjoy wearing one. I was lucky the 39mm was around when I wanted one and that’s the perfect size for me.
Aside from the lume, I like everything about the 114270 better. The new dial looks too bold, though I'd still wear it in a heartbeat. I think my preference is for the previous generation though.
I have your explorer reference from the same year no less and I completely agree with your bracelet comments, yes it’s stamped like a tin can but boy does it wear supple on the wrist, the newer references bracelet feels sharper/industrial compared to the 114270. Great video as usual Evan🙂
Nice comparison! I got the latest iteration of the 114270 in the best condition I could find at the time because I felt sure Rolex would never produce another 36mm Explorer again. Yet, less than a year later, Rolex released the new 124270. Having seen the difference you highlighted, I don’t regret my purchase at all. I’m a bit of lume fanatic, so I would have preferred the lumed numerals and the adjust clasp is a nice feature on the newer model. However, the bracelet on the older model is quite comfortable and wider width looks much better IMO.
Get your lug-spacing pitchforks people! No? Ok. Anyway, the dial of the 04 version has more character. After doing the arithmetic, I would go with the older one. Although I was shocked (shocked, I say!) when I tried the 36mm on at an AD. It was teeny-tiny. 39 or bust … for me.
Great video! Love them both. To me the coolest kind of vintage watch is the one you buy new and wear for 30 years. So I bought the new one. Both are killer watches
I got my dad the new 124270 for his 60th/retirement and he definitely loves the size and simplicity no non-sense look of the Explorer I. It's basically just a modern upgraded version of the 114270 but im sure you cant really go wrong with either.
I tried on the new 36mm and it looked absolutely tiny, the older 36mm wears better imo but I think the 39mm is the best explorer. My iwc mark 18 is the watch that prevented me from buying the explorer.
I prefer the older, it has class and wears way more comfortable. I think you made the right choice. Current rolexes are too heavy, blingy except tge daytona which you cant buy anyways..
I bought an old versión a few mounth ago and I absolutely love It! Now, Im going to sell all my other watches: Moonwatch and two Grand Seiko's, because Explorer is the best one watch collection!
As a low-effort PSA: the 5mm EasyLink is retrofittable to the 114270 bracelet. Ask your AD for part number B32-20193-D1, I paid 65 EUR excl. VAT recently. Works like a charm if your AD will order it for you, and brings arguably one of the better features of the new reference to the 114270.
@@YoureTerrific I believe it came with the Explorer 39 originally. Details on the internet are a bit sparse and I haven’t gone digging for the single source of truth. It’s a great enhancement if you can get ahold of one though. (Edit: brainfart and removed some inaccurate info)
In my opinion, these watches are so similar that you can't really go wrong with either one. I prefer the older one aesthetically, but you can't deny, of course, that the new one is better technically. I don't have an Explorer, but I'd be happy with either one of these.
Dammit, just purchased a 114270 and it's on its way. Picked up the 124270 this summer and been wearing daily. I love it, absolutely love it, even on my 7.2" wrist all you size snobs. But will I love the 114270 more? I am determined to find out.... I'm gonna wear each one and make the decision over the coming months. Don't think I will keep both in the end, so which ever one I reach for and wear more often will be the one that stays. Here we go and thanks a ton for the review.
I fittet the 214270 Easylink to my 114270, works perfect. Thanks for the great comparison. I prefer the 114270 any day - it is a modern classic, the absolut best of all generations. Timeless and elegant and wonderfully understated.
Yours has one advantage--you can't buy it anymore, even if you wanted to. I've been in similar situations before with watch collecting. Cherish the older one since it's no longer available (except through the secondary market).
Great comparison. Both great watches and Rolex's best current Professional. For when you have to prove absolutely nothing. I'd say the new watch is better in almost every measurable way (bracelet, lume, movement), but the 114270 (like pre- Supacase Subs) has more charm, more warmth. I think that comes from some of its imperfections and idiosyncrasies. I think both would be improved by being slightly bigger. Slightly, NOT 39mm! Like maybe 36.5, 37, maybe 38mm. The lack of mid-size in Rolex is odd.
I’m at a loss to verbalize exactly why my 114270 looks and feels right for ME yet I feel very fortunate to have that unambiguous feeling that negates any serious consideration of something different. It’s reminiscent of a beloved 60’s muscle car I owned. Newer models of my auto had indisputably better mechanics and performance but could never capture what it felt like to jump behind the wheel of MY ride.
Awesome job putting in a multitude of pocket and arm crossed shots. To offen we only get to see the watch from 12 inches away as worn. When we get to see how a piece looks from afar and how other people see it some much need perspective is provided.
Everything on the older 114270 is more balanced. From the bracelet taper to the rattly clasp, and wears that much more handsome. The only thing about the new Explorer that is objectively superior to the older one is the movement.
I used to own both the 114270 and 124270. Eventually I kept the 114270 and sold the other. The dial on the new one looks cluttered by the larger dial elements and also the larger bezel didn't help.
I bought a 124270 about two years ago. I really liked it, but eventually traded it for an Explorer 2. Anyway, after a short period of time, I regretted the trade (not even-up). About three months ago, I put down money on an 114270. I pay on it every month, and will get it as a Christmas as gift. The 36 mm size is perfect, and the watch is classically understated.
Nice video. Have the latest version myself and think in the end is the better watch. But if I like you would have the previous 36mm version before the new one came I would not upgrade to it. Think I would appreciate the memories I've made more then getting the improved version over it. Enjoy yours!!
I bought my Rolex Explorer 214270 because of you. Your video of a couple of years ago did it for me so I went and bought one nearly new. 39mm, 2019 model year. Fantastic. I then sold it a year later because of me. Regretted it ever since and now cannot afford a new one or even to buy the same model again due to the price hype on these things. Since then I have grovelled on my knees and offered my eldest unmarried to the local AD to buy another or a Sub or even a GMT. Was I lucky? Not a chance mate. So I investigated the Super-Clone products and ordered the new Submariner Starbucks. It arrived yesterday. My God. What a thing. I have been watching videos of the real thing being unboxed etc and honestly there is no difference. It's all your fault.
Thanks so much for posting this. I know in your shoes I would have struggled with the announcement for the new release right after you purchased the previous model to be able to do an exacting comparison. What a great choice your 40th. Thanks for this channel I've grown to love watches much more (though my wallet might be worse for the wear)
Am going to leave my first RUclips comment here... My first Rolex was 114270. Sold it to fund a marriage ring. Then I got a payrise and bought a 124270 (also to celebrate the born of my first baby). But there is always something I feel distant and not related to with 124270 (some enthusiasts say it lacks the soul as 114270 does). Finally August this year, I happen to find a 114270 NOS. Sold my 124270 and bought this 114270. All the connection just feel back. Dont think I will let this one go. IMHO 114270 is the best Rolex. Only thing I think can be improved is probably the AR coating. But still, near Rolex perfection. If I only keep one Rolex, it is 114270. If I only keep two watches, they would be 114270 and PP 3700. If I only keep one watch, it is 114270.
I am so glad that this video exists. Not because we need it in any way but just to highlight exactly how terrible we are as watch enthusiasts! Can you imagine someone who has no clue watching this video and just shaking their head the entire time 😂

I prob would go for the 39mm model 😂.
How much is this watch for, the Rolex explorer? Can you please tell
Yup. We’re troubled folk.
At first the 124270 seems too small especially on the bracelet taper, but after owning it for 5 months, it totally changes my preference of watch sizes and I could comfortably say that this is the perfect Rolex for me.
You know the easy link gives 5mm - can you lock it in between that range or is is one or the other?
Gay man’s 36mm
that's the experience of many who usually wore 40mm+ watches, I like wearing the Sub with the maxi case etc but the 36mm Explorer wears like a dream and I now prefer to wear it when I don't want to be too concerned or care about the watch I'm wearing.
I sometimes miss the full lumed numbers on the newer model, but other than that…I love my 114270.
Whoa... I didn't know they did that???!
If light hits it at a certain angle, you'll still get a glare, and it's the same with the 124270.
wow I didn't know they do that, thanks for the info.
“Everyone should have a hobby that they’re embarrassed by.” Love it.
Oh I have multiple. I'm an overachiever 😂
Reasons I prefer the 114270:
+ the numerals and hour markers are smaller which I think makes the watch looks classier.
If you want to get a perfect fit you're more likely to get it on the 114270 (6 micro adjustment holes vs 3 on the 124270)
+ the thinner bezel and wider bracelet looks better IMO and blends the watch into the bracelet instead of making the watch head look bigger on the newer one as you pointed out.
+ cheaper :)
As for the improvements of the newer one:
*Movement: My 2009 Explorer is +1s/day.
Comment of the year, for me. Thanks for providing more nuance to what's already a very comprehensive video on the differences.
I agree that lume is overrated.
Well done.
In ‘04, when buying my first “nice” watch, I looked at an Explorer and a TAG Heuer 2000 auto. I bought the TAG. I bought the wrong watch!
The video all us 114270 owners needed. Bravo. 👏
Outstanding video! I am a 114270 owner (2005) and appreciate the older one over the new.
7:49 what a classy yet savage take 🤣 amen wear what you want and makes you look/feel good.
And I'd say the 114270 is the preference, but mixing the new bracelet and clasp would make it perfect!
The aesthetic of the old dial is superior IMO. Good choice!
THIS
The ‘old’ movement keeps time perfectly well
@@KeepingWatchUK Yes. And a 1982 Oldsmobile is a perfectly reliable form of transportation.
@@davidofglenbrook4487 A perfect comparison! 😂 The ‘old’ movement is still a superlative chronometer. How much more of an improvement is a newer movement really. You lose one less second over a day or two. Great!!
Well…. What about 40mm? 😜
Happy watch wearing!
the fine 369 on the older one is so elegant.
Congrats on the definitive review comparison of this very burning question since the 124270 release.
Such a great comparison. I just picked up the 124270
Great video! I always had 3 showstoppers that stopped me from taking rolex seriously as a no compromise watch:
- Movement
- AR coating
- Lume.
As you adroitly put, this watch addresses all 3 of those areas. I can't find anything wrong with the new one.
Great video and valid points. Glad you eventually got the explorer. :)
I prefer the new one, seems better to me in every way.
The new bracelet is too narrow, 14mm end is a no go for me as well.
@@thepickyreviewer have you actually worn the watch? i ask because even tho it is thinner at the clasp it is MUCH more substantial feeling that the prior version and balances out the head of the watch with perfection
@@BLR653I tried it briefly twice at an ad. I mostly noticed the 19/14 bracelet which maybe I am just not used to it.
Never had anyone say to my face, “is that a womens watch?” Looks perfect on you 👍🏼
I've never really considered an Explorer, but if I ever did buy one, I'd but the 39mm. Now, the Explorer II...Love that! Nice video!
A couple of hours ago I've finally got one as well, just like yours from 2004. This video has deepened my conviction that I have purchased the right one. Thank you!
No... no you didn't..
This is similar to my IWC dilemma... bought the Mark 16 instead of the new 20
I just did the same 👍🏼 😊
Same, I already have the 116610 and the 116710blnr with the maxi case and sturdy bracelets, I went with the 114270 instead of the 124270 and the bracelet is actually a welcome change and I now prefer it for everyday wear.
I also bought an explorer for my 40th last year. Went for the two tone tough.
Very nice video.
Agree with every point, my experience exactly.
New one all day, proportion between bracelet and watchhead spot on, imo.
I have the same model from 2002. Not one of my favorites in the collection, but it really is comfortable to wear and quite versatile.
Such a great comparison. So in love with the Explorer!
Thanks, my dude. You also have a great women’s watch. #blessed
Love my modern vintage Explorer. 36 is a perfect size. Class.
Thank you very much for your work 🙏
Visited Japan 2 weeks ago and bought a 2002 114270 explorer for my 40th. All thanks to your original video 🙂 great content
Might explain the scarcity of watches. Rolex could be keeping things hush as they try to fix the issue.
The proportions of your “vintage” model is better in my opinion and even the dial, indices, markers, everything on the dial is better proportioned too
Great video.
The lume is fanrastic?...I agree its a great watch...but I dont agree that the lume is great...I find it the only dissapointing thing about that watch
Thank you for the comparison. I have the 114270; It is my smallest watch and I love it.

I have had the 39mm 214270 Mark since 2019. It works very well for me.
No such thing as a wrong Explorer. I think they are all great and now everyone regardless of wrist size can enjoy wearing one. I was lucky the 39mm was around when I wanted one and that’s the perfect size for me.
Besides the movement, it's a matter of taste..... Pretty much sums it up. Pick your favorite.
Great comparison. Best shot of the cutout between the lugs I've seen. Nice job.

I have tried the two before i took the 114270 . It wasn t a difficult choice , really prefer the old by far
What watch uses that part by default?
Sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into the newer version
Love the jangly Rolex bracelets of late 90s and early 2000s.
Great video, as usual! 🙂🎉🎉🎉
The 124270 has perfect proportions, a dial with extra pop, and updated movement. You should’ve waited.
Like the lume, like the new movement, but that strap taper is a bit too much and bolder font is also no bueno.
36mm is a stylistic classical size. Beautiful pair of watches. I would be happy with either option but the flat coated sapphire makes that dial pop.
I knew a rich funny guy like you at school once, everyone hated him🤡
Thanks so much for posting this.
1016 is my personal favourite for many reasons.
the gap between the lugs is for easier removing of the bezel... the gap allows guaranteed, scratch proof removal of the bezel
“I loves me some lume…”…😂 I really love your vids and your down-to-earth take on all this nerding…thanks Adrian🙏🏻
