It would be interesting to see self portraits of the Pubcast members, seeing that landscape and wildlife photography are your go-to genres.
I've said it before and I'll say it again it's always great to see the new thumbnail for another Pubcast when I open You Tube especially when working from home at the start of a new week. Another excellent 'session' in the virtual pub. Can I suggest it be compulsory that David has a bottle of wine on EVERY Pubcast ☺ I can certainly relate to getting the aches and pains all over my body and I'm only mid fifties myself 🤣
Excellent pubcast gents! The newly titled "Jamie's impressions" slot needs to become a regular me thinks :) Despite the giggles actually quite a serious discussion about the pressures of landscape photography. I'm one of these people that puts emotion and reaction into my images, and a lot of my talks to camera clubs discuss how I go about achieving it. However, I've met lots of people that - after the talk - have admitted that they get the approach, but it is not for them. For them, photography is a technical and technological exercise. So, all that stuff about hyperfocal distances, and stacking etc etc is what ticks their boxes and makes the pursuit interesting. No point raging against it, because it is what drives them. I've made RUclips videos about grad filters and tripods, and I've made them because I use these things to help me in my own pursuit - however, I had a comment from someone claiming that I was a danger to the future of landscape photography because I was publishing videos on out of date techniques. The comment went on and on about why I should delete my channel, and the potential harm I was doing to people just starting out. I didn't respond - I just deleted the comment referring to the contributor impolitely under my breath as I did. What was it that French photographer Jeanloup Sieffe said, "I take pictures for me, if other people like them then that is too bad". Unfortunately, publishing what you do on social media invites reaction, but at the end of the day your own motivation behind what and how you do it should be more important.
Another great pubcast, this week felt like you were talking directly to me, from getting old and the subsequent ailments to the pressures of producing landscape images. On that point i have stopped watching youtube in an effort to learn but instead i use it to look at personalities i would like to spend my time and money with in order to expand my knowledge. I think there is far more value in terms of “time spent” in a 1-2-1. These sessions put you in a location, conditions and a set of circumstances you havent seen before and on hand you have someone thst may well have dealt with these circumstances to discuss potential solutions.
Anyway i could go on and im not going too. well done again for another enjoyable episode of “grumpy old men” Love my Sunday/Mondays
Darren, dont listen to Dave, go for the lens👍🏼🤣💪🏻
Scottish jaws set the tone for this one !! Priceless !!
Stuart’s Twitter post was epic !
Dave hit the nail on the head with new gear, I love getting new gear it’s great ! I think people who try and put you down are generally toxic people and their opinion won’t even matter to me.
The shots idea HAS to happen !! That would be hilarious
I actually watched this in the same week it came out! Great episode with an interesting mix of humor and philosophy. I found the Pubcast through Dave, and I found Dave when I was looking for information on my Olympus gear. So he really is an influencer. I identified with the whole getting older and making adjustments thing. Not sure where I’m going with landscape photography. I’ve had a couple of bad falls, and I’m going to be limited in where I can get to. Guess I’m going to have to think creatively! Anyway, looking forward to the next time.
Another great podcast. Thanks to you all. 👏🏻 Absolute highlight of the week.Keep up the great work.!!👌🏻
Lmfao .... Jamie's in-between accents are class 🤣🤣🤣 think you need to do a Pubcast on tour and do this live 🤣🤣🍺🍺🤣🤣
Pubcast on tour.., I’ll second that 👍👍
The discussions are getting more interesting with each episode. Expectations, online influence, social media, gear etc., all very worthwhile topics that need to be discussed. My pet peeve, RUclips channels that talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Saw a video come up in my feed the other day with a title talking about an important thing that pros do. The guy is a full-time RUclipsr, not a professional photographer. 🤷🏻♂ Can you call yourself a pro if all you do is talk about photography? I'll stop before this turns into a rant. 🍻
Thanks for another great episode gents. And for the friendly given advice!
On February the 12th Petapixel published an interesting article about Film Photography being more trustworthy than Digital Photography: ‘why Film Photography is the Antithesis of AI Art’ by Simon King. Certainly worth reading and may be food for discussion in the Pubcast.
Absolutely brilliant information and humour to top any TV "comedy"
Interesting discussion around the breadth of creative opportunities in 'Landscape' vs 'Street - I'm not sure I agree that there are more opportunities with street. I admittedly do sometimes have Landscape shots that are sharp from front to back and have balanced exposure etc but probably more often I will do the same things that I would in the street - shoot wide open, defocus or reduce clarity, under expose for highlight shapes, over expose significantly, look for abstract colour, contrast and shape details by zooming right in or ignoring the 'vista', ICM, multi exposure, Orton effect, b&w, IR, bleach bypass, over-saturate, Polaroid, 35mm/120 film, change format, shoot at slower speeds, etc etc and that is before I start to think about processing or what I might do with the image when printed. I think it comes down to predominately ignoring the 'box' that social media creates around Landscape photography (or whatever genre you like) and see where the experimentation takes you which is easy to say if you don't have to earn a living from it of course. Try stuff, expect to fail sometimes and find types of images that ring your bell. Free the mind and fly!
Hi Mark,
That’s an impressive list of technical possibilities!
I started with a TLR and Ilford Pan F; then came a SLR with slide film, like Fuji Velvia. With slide film there was no way for post processing so you had to get it right in camera. In 2004 started my digital era with a bounty of possibilities for post processing. I used quite a few from your list but eventually I came to the conclusion that the the technology was just a wrapping paper to hide the shortcomings of my photography.
So now I’m almost back to the beginning … shooting like there is Velvia inside the camera and almost no post processing other than conversion to B&W. I’m aiming at images that reflect what I saw with my eyes as close as possible. No Enhanced Reality or Arti(facial) photography for me anymore. Back to pure images 😊.
Of course YMMV and that’s perfectly fine. In photography there is room for diversification, luckily.
I’m getting more Content Aware nowadays due to the restrictions in post processing I put myself on. And that has to be because my images are as near to registrations as I can get them. Capturing something that’s interesting is then more than ever key.
Thanks for the very kind comment Dave. Much appreciated. I certainly do not regret moving to Olympus. As you so rightly say, the difference in size and weight between the 300mm F4 and a 600mm Canon is amazing. Not only that, but the 300mm F4 is very cheap in comparrision to the Canon. I can put my hand on my heart and say that I have taken shots with the Olympus system that I would never ever have got with my `old` Canon system. That`s not to say Canon is bad, its just that with ProCapture, Olympus raised the bar for bird photography.
Another really interesting episode. Darren, I know what you mean about getting older and carrying heavy camera gear around. I’m 78 years old and switch over to micro four thirds about 10 years ago when the first EM-1 came out. I switched not only because of age, but I lost 2 1/2 fingers on my right hand in an accident. I also have small hands to begin with, so handling a big dslr became a challenge. I know that there are some limitations using the smaller system, but that can be said of almost any system. I am not a professional photographer, not even a serious amateur and definitely not a wildlife photographer. I just enjoy photography and would call myself an outdoor photographer since almost all of my photos are taken outdoors. I rarely take pictures indoors and most of those are with my phone. I have never regretted making the switch to micro four thirds and I’m definitely not trying to convince you to make the switch. However, before you make a big investment in a 600mm lens that you may find too cumbersome to carry around Why don’t you rent an OM-1 with the 300mm pro lens to see if it could work for you. You may even want to consider renting the Sony lens before you purchase it. You may find that you are perfectly OK with the bigger system and can compensate for the larger lens but modifying the rest of your gear. It’s just a suggestion. Good luck with whatever you decide.
P.S. I don’t know if it’s the same in the UK, but currently here in the US if you purchase any of the Olympus Pro long lenses, you get the 2.0 teleconverter free.
Brilliant episode, I look forward to seeing Jamie at the Oscars, collecting the best actor award dressed like Sam Smith at the Brits.....😁
Nice to see the Pubcast not only released on time but earlier than scheduled, well done Gary...I was going to comment last week about the tardiness of the release but figured I'd shown you enough disappointment the week before when Pubcast failed to materialise. As far as some.comments from this week. In my opinion, probably due to social media/RUclips, many new photographers see some stunning images on SM and think oh I'll buy a camera and take some images like that and have an expectation that they should be able to produce award winning images from day 1. I do think it's a generational issue that people want things now rather than having to put a shift in to get to that goal. Anyway, keep up the good work and I'll start saving for Norway in 2 years time but a UK Pubcast meet up this year would be awesome.
Very many thanks to you all chaps for this very funny episode 🤣
Really enjoyed this week's pubcast, some fine points mentioned on new gear and the perceived expectations of how it will better your images...I think technically it would make your images better from the point of view that you would be out using it more, not because of the bells and whistles that it brings...maybe if you feel in a rut,and you have fellow photographers in the same boat that shoot different systems that are feeling the same, all swap gear and use each other's for a while!
I've never bought a new camera. 🤷♂
I'm with Jamie, I need my boots to be a half size larger minimum.
Darren, I have recently moved to the OM1 with the 300f4 pro and usually also have a 1.4x converter on, I then shoot at f5.6 but I can be hand held down to 1/125th second, then shoot 40 frames a second. So a full frame equivalent of 840mm. Obviously lots are soft at that shutter speed but lots are tack sharp. The wife is also using an OM1 but with the 100-400 f5 to 6.3 but it isn’t as sharp and needs stopping down slightly to get it better. As for separation, at f4 it is pretty good but you can alway use a background mask in Lightroom and turn down the clarity slightly. Simon’s RUclips channel is great but if you watched the run up to him getting the OM1 it was clear he would move to the Z9 as soon as he could get his hands on one. Also use Narrative Select to sort through your photos, don’t import them just keep them on the card and delete the rejects before importing into Lightroom, it is extremely quick.
Wine seams to be the answer, Dave usually sits quite quietly mostly listening 😂😂.
A really good episode thanks.
I remember a while ago, some of you talked about ditching the camera bag for a hiking bag with padded inserts for protecting your camera, in an effort to cut down on weight. I wondered how that went?
Really enjoying the pub cast guys thanks for taking the time out to entertain us. My question to help line up the funny stories. What personal trait has gotten you in the most trouble, how, why and when?
Dave could have a whole episode on this, I bet.
Here' a tip, chaps. Each on your next vlog, take this tack to tell your viewers to take that step back. Take this video to help people find their niche, and worry about them being happy and stuff all the other bs.
Agre with Stu. The human eye, in general unless you have sxtremely long vision will see the ditance gradually get less sharp, but "not out of focus". I much prefer making sure front to back is iN focus, but that doesn't mean tack sharp front to back.
Wel saiď, Dave
Movie quotes: "that'll do pig" from babe. Oft said to my children and misunderstood by miscellaneous passer-bys in my Expat context 😂
I was thinking @gary could do a video on Can ChatGPT make you a better dad? It be great title!
My thoughts on the echo chamber of You Tube are the same as David's. It is the cart before the horse syndrome. What good are all of the technical abilities when there is no end goal in mind? The comment (question?) from the OP included the word competition, the only competition I am party to is self fulfillment and satisfaction. If I am enjoying this hobby then I have won.
Movie quote: Clint Eastwood in "Dirty Harry": "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?
Oh, bugger, I missed that bit that it had to be a movie quote, I thught it was a movie scene.. thanks for the inclusion anyway, Gary
An entertaining hour and a half .... as usual. I'll stick my head above the parapet and suggest that almost all those posing as 'experts' on youtube ...... and trying to monetise social media are actually fairly average photographers at best. I've lost count of the number of photographers who seem to have picked up a camera a few years ago, chucked out a load of RUclips videos and are now running workshops. It's a bit like the partially sighted leading the blind ..... There are a few notable exceptions of course ..... and a selection who produce Vlogs because they enjoy it with no real agenda or expectation, but if you want to learn how to be a good photographer then RUclips is not the best place.
❤️❤️🙏✌️✌️👊✌️✌️🙏❤️❤️
Ever considered having a woman photographer on your podcast (Lyn Luxon Jones)
In a word, yes. She's been on a few times Robert 🙂
Stuart ... you should have shaved a rabbit on the back of your head and when anyone comments on it just tell em it's Hare😂
Just a general queerie gents, had ye any lady people viewers before Dave's comment last week ?....
If there were any female viewers left, they have gone now 😂😂😂 dave's seen to that 😂😂😂 on cameras I started on Nikon F and moved Nikon Z full frame but tbh at the moment what is it with Canon and Nikon with regards to 3rd party support. I loved my F mount Sigma Art lenses, and I sold them to get on the Z mount FF train, but I assumed Sigma Art lenses would appear on Z mount. The excuse is they won't let any lens onto the system that competes with their own, but they let Viltrox do a 35mm and 85mm f1.8..... lenses that already exist in the eco-system, so what is really going on? Sony is cashing on in this stupidity clearly.
