Thank you Guy's and to Gary for the editing. Good to see Dave back. Glad that Sam is enjoying his new desk, but please send him to Dunelm for a cushion to sit on.
Gentlemen, another enjoyable podcast. Alister Benn, as a guest with his insights and commentary, was a real plus. Thanks for the shout-out, and you'll be happy to know that I haven't received any death threats for the theme song question, …. Yet. As far as social media posting, if you create an image and no one sees it; have you really created anything? Social media sure beats the days of handing someone a scrapbook of photos or force feeding them a slide show and watching them squirm. Like many on the panel, I do my photography for the experience of being out. Being older, having a camera with me has the added benefit of when I need to stop on trail to catch my breath or am a little confused, I don't have a boy scout come to me and try to help me across a street. I can just twiddle the camera dials and stare off into the distance like I'm looking for some composition. I gave up long ago trying to figure out why folks give one of my images a like. I know my thoughts in creating a photograph, but I have little to no idea what goes through a viewers’ mind on seeing it. I do enjoy seeing other people's photos on social media and usually give the photos a like to acknowledge to the creator that someone has seen it, but more importantly to mark it that I have seen in case it shows up in my feed again. I'm firmly in the camp of how many likes a photo gets on social media has little to do with the quality of the photo. If one person sees one of my photos and stops to ponder it for a second or two; for me, it was worth the effort of posting it.
I really enjoyed this episode, great listening to Alister Benn and his approach to photography as a therapy, I totally agree. Creativity comes at a cost usually, but we have a unique way of looking at the world. On a recent visit to my friend in Cornwall, she came out with me on a walk with my camera, she commented on how much she usually misses in the landscape, because I was spotting things to photograph so often. It really makes you more present in the world.
Any enjoyable episode gents, and wow how insightful is Alister! Very much the voice of reason. Got to give a shout out to Darren though for trying to help you Gary to understand why you feel the way you do with social media. Fair play Daz! Have a good week all
Another great podcast everyone. Well done Gary for making the song. Thought it was really good. I think Gary you should get everyone together in Podcast costumes and sing the song and make a record and sell it for a charity. Well done again Gary. Look forward to the next one.
Nice surprise to see my good friend Alister. He brought me so much in the way of thinking about photography and creativity. Gary, you should book some date with him for some therapy.😂 I agree that the best way to look at photography is in books or website. I spent a good time with you. Thanks guys.
Just getting started on the episode… sweet cast. Anyway, it’s Geoff, who got a shout out early on. I’ve re-sent my reply, Gary… not sure if it might be going to junk mail? Hope it finds you this time. If not I’ll try something else… such as here and now, even, that the two photos I’ll go with are files 5316 and 2011. Apologies for the mix up!
Very interesting discussion about mental health. I struggle on a daily basis with my mental health, I find the only thing that helps me is photography, being there in nature, ‘in the moment’, allows me to switch off those negative thoughts and be present.
First things first, I hope that you all managed to get through the storm unscathed. Secondly, if I never hear that tune again it'll be too soon - although it could be said it was so bad it was brilliant. A great guest this week, with some very well thought through input as well. I really enjoyed listening to the discussion regarding social media and everyone's thoughts. Your discussion kind of highlighted the whole thing around social media in the first place, and the sheer quantity of different opinion it generates (well I think so anyway). Photography is like a drug. I've not been able to do pretty much anything for weeks, as we're living in a building site at the moment, so I've packed my editing and photography gear away to try and prevent it getting damaged by all the dust - there's so much we could probably restock the Sahara at the moment. To say I'm getting withdrawals is an understatement. On that note, perhaps I could generate a bit of a discussion? As part of our build, I've been allowed to create my own editing/study area (about 3m x 2m). I'm driving my wife mad, with my intention to paint the walls in a neutral grey, and get grey cupboards so that it's a 'better' editing environment that doesn't create colour casts. I'm even going to get a light with a high CRI at 5000K and the recommended lumens. My question for discussion would be "Do you think I'm going OTT with all this, or have any of you set up very specific editing areas in a similar manner?" Thanks for a very interesting video this week folks, look forward to next week. Sorry for the long comment 😂
Is any of the panel able to answer this Query / Question .. If you are/ were a long term user of LR / PS and decided to ditch it ( for whatever reason ) and move to Affinity2 .. Would you be able to achieve the same processed results ???
Well done Alistair for bringing some sense of reason to Gary's entrenched mindset of social media. Would be very nice to see your return. Welcome back Mr Dave, hope things go well at home. I post occasionally on Social media, but I print and put my images on the walls at home. That for me is Photography.Enjoy a day out with the camera, if you get a banger shot yippee, if not maybe next time. All stay sane and we will look forward to a dribble of drivel with a bit of humour dropped in.
A thoroughly entertaining episode! The one thing I would say about social media is that if it is influencing your photography, then it is more likely doing so in a way that is pushing you to mediocrity rather than to being extraordinary. This is because the vast majority of people on social media liking or disliking your work are novices or non-photographers who have limited exposure to the world of photography and are not particularly qualified to judge your work. They will like anything that aesthetically appeals to them without any regard to originality or self expression.
Great episode lads, on the question of social media platforms (particularly instagram), do you think you would have a more favourable view of them if you were more successful and had bigger followings? I noticed that most of the pubcast panel have a fairly low following, how much does that influence your opinion?
Wow! Some very detailed discussions on photography and its relationship with, mental health, social media and ai, all squeezed in to 2 hours. Have watched it once but need to watch it again to take it all in. On the most important topic .. yes the theme song does need sleigh bells 🙂
I post to FB for friends and family mainly, also to photography groups. Likes from photographers I look up to mean something. I post to a non photography group within the region I live, as they are all about the region and I use that as a guide for my photography as the likes are from non photographers and that is appreciated by me. Never been on X, Instagram or tik tok and never will.
Strange people who don't use social media are the ones who made their names known on it! I have just achieved a new level with one of my pictures it got no likes at all! (just a fact) There was some interesting topics discussed and that's what I like about about social media, thanks for your time and indeed it was a good listen with my laptop upstairs charging and me downstairs with my ear pods in! Watching the jungle thing on TV, (multi tasking)
Congratulations on your zero likes, it just proves that you've seen something that is totally original. This isn't sarcasm, its a genuine positive when nobody else 'gets' what you thought was worth recording 👍🏻
@@iainmc9859 Thank you for that very positive answer I never thought of my no likes picture like that before! but I did post my thoughts about a topic on the pubcast a couple of days ago and I am disappointed to say that I did get one like to-day, thank you for the comment!
Loved the Pubcast theme song - release it as a single for Christmas! You also invented the Pubcast Triathlon - Fishing, Photography and Golf - it should be in the next Olympics😂. I've given you a thumbs up, but I guess you aren't bothered really?🤣
Very enjoyable and interesting conversation like always. Glad to see DG and his LLMs. However, please can someone contact OpenAI and get Gary banned after that song.
I had a similar experience to Daz on the nose of Yewbarrow back on a wet day in June. Underestimated it big style. Give me the nice grippy pinnacles of An Teallach or Liathach any day.
Have to agree with Adam, who cares if you get likes on social media. The only point of being on it is to create awareness if you have something to sell, and build brand awareness. That's it. If you have nothing to sell, don't go on it.
YewBarrow is a difficult climb up that way. Most people come down yewbarrow as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe but in wet conditions I wouldn't come down over the summit and come round the back of it and down. If I was going up that way I would be coming down the black sail pass after Pillar. Big walks, though, more for warmer and longer days daz. We have all put ourselves in situations like that. A wise man turns around. If it looks shit, it probably is.
Talking about shipping costs of books. I enquired on Ted Forbes' book and the cheapest shipping with tracking to Australia from Texas is over $US 90.00! More than twice the price of the book.
Lots of food for thought guys. Thanks! 😊 Sometimes I fall into that social media "why" trap, like Gary. I've had so-so images get tons of likes, and then images that I'm really happy with get significantly less likes. And I think "why?" (I should really be asking "why do I care?") I like what Alister said "why would amateurs subject themselves to that?" And that's so true! Us amateurs get nothing out of it. Like Adam said, 'likes' mean nothing. We're not making money from IG or FB. (Meta is making all that money!) We (amateurs) are not leading workshops, not selling books, prints, presets etc. Why should we care? Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the quality of the image, but the popularity of the person posting. Folks that have a small following get left in the dust. I like what Dave said, just post to let people see what you're doing and move on. Don't dwell on what happens after. I think that's a good way to move forward. 👍
another good show, Not sure on the intro christmas hit, but you never know .Better than a lot of crap rapping you hear now days. Hope daves troubles are not too serious .stay safe all. BTW Is daz in cambridge? always thought he was in ELy

Many thanks guys, I really appreciate the invite and had a great time. Would love to come back in the future for another therapy session… ❤
Thanks Alister, it was an absolute pleasure having you on!! I’ll book you in for our next session in 2025 🙂😂
