Re - selling. If the person was going to have a break , perhaps when/if they took it up again , some of the gear would be outdated and they would want to buy gear with better specs. Their current gear sold then would be worth even less. Having said that, I probably wouldn’t sell anything!

Great episode lads, on the question of social media platforms (particularly instagram), do you think you would have a more favourable view of them if you were more successful and had bigger followings? I noticed that most of the pubcast panel have a fairly low following, how much does that influence your opinion?

Gentlemen, another enjoyable podcast. Alister Benn, as a guest with his insights and commentary, was a real plus. Thanks for the shout-out, and you'll be happy to know that I haven't received any death threats for the theme song question, …. Yet. As far as social media posting, if you create an image and no one sees it; have you really created anything? Social media sure beats the days of handing someone a scrapbook of photos or force feeding them a slide show and watching them squirm. Like many on the panel, I do my photography for the experience of being out. Being older, having a camera with me has the added benefit of when I need to stop on trail to catch my breath or am a little confused, I don't have a boy scout come to me and try to help me across a street. I can just twiddle the camera dials and stare off into the distance like I'm looking for some composition. I gave up long ago trying to figure out why folks give one of my images a like. I know my thoughts in creating a photograph, but I have little to no idea what goes through a viewers’ mind on seeing it. I do enjoy seeing other people's photos on social media and usually give the photos a like to acknowledge to the creator that someone has seen it, but more importantly to mark it that I have seen in case it shows up in my feed again. I'm firmly in the camp of how many likes a photo gets on social media has little to do with the quality of the photo. If one person sees one of my photos and stops to ponder it for a second or two; for me, it was worth the effort of posting it.

Very interesting discussion about mental health. I struggle on a daily basis with my mental health, I find the only thing that helps me is photography, being there in nature, ‘in the moment’, allows me to switch off those negative thoughts and be present.

I really enjoyed this episode, great listening to Alister Benn and his approach to photography as a therapy, I totally agree. Creativity comes at a cost usually, but we have a unique way of looking at the world. On a recent visit to my friend in Cornwall, she came out with me on a walk with my camera, she commented on how much she usually misses in the landscape, because I was spotting things to photograph so often. It really makes you more present in the world.

A thoroughly entertaining episode! The one thing I would say about social media is that if it is influencing your photography, then it is more likely doing so in a way that is pushing you to mediocrity rather than to being extraordinary. This is because the vast majority of people on social media liking or disliking your work are novices or non-photographers who have limited exposure to the world of photography and are not particularly qualified to judge your work. They will like anything that aesthetically appeals to them without any regard to originality or self expression.

I post to a non photography group within the region I live, as they are all about the region and I use that as a guide for my photography as the likes are from non photographers and that is appreciated by me. Never been on X, Instagram or tik tok and never will.

YewBarrow is a difficult climb up that way. Most people come down yewbarrow as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe but in wet conditions I wouldn't come down over the summit and come round the back of it and down. If I was going up that way I would be coming down the black sail pass after Pillar. Big walks, though, more for warmer and longer days daz. We have all put ourselves in situations like that. A wise man turns around. If it looks shit, it probably is.

First things first, I hope that you all managed to get through the storm unscathed. Secondly, if I never hear that tune again it'll be too soon - although it could be said it was so bad it was brilliant. A great guest this week, with some very well thought through input as well. I really enjoyed listening to the discussion regarding social media and everyone's thoughts. Your discussion kind of highlighted the whole thing around social media in the first place, and the sheer quantity of different opinion it generates (well I think so anyway). Photography is like a drug. I've not been able to do pretty much anything for weeks, as we're living in a building site at the moment, so I've packed my editing and photography gear away to try and prevent it getting damaged by all the dust - there's so much we could probably restock the Sahara at the moment. To say I'm getting withdrawals is an understatement. On that note, perhaps I could generate a bit of a discussion? As part of our build, I've been allowed to create my own editing/study area (about 3m x 2m). I'm driving my wife mad, with my intention to paint the walls in a neutral grey, and get grey cupboards so that it's a 'better' editing environment that doesn't create colour casts. I'm even going to get a light with a high CRI at 5000K and the recommended lumens. My question for discussion would be "Do you think I'm going OTT with all this, or have any of you set up very specific editing areas in a similar manner?" Thanks for a very interesting video this week folks, look forward to next week. Sorry for the long comment 😂

Have to agree with Adam, who cares if you get likes on social media. The only point of being on it is to create awareness if you have something to sell, and build brand awareness. That's it. If you have nothing to sell, don't go on it.

  • @blivieriphoto

Lots of food for thought guys. Thanks! 😊 Sometimes I fall into that social media "why" trap, like Gary. I've had so-so images get tons of likes, and then images that I'm really happy with get significantly less likes. And I think "why?" (I should really be asking "why do I care?") I like what Alister said "why would amateurs subject themselves to that?" And that's so true! Us amateurs get nothing out of it. Like Adam said, 'likes' mean nothing. We're not making money from IG or FB. (Meta is making all that money!) We (amateurs) are not leading workshops, not selling books, prints, presets etc. Why should we care? Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the quality of the image, but the popularity of the person posting. Folks that have a small following get left in the dust. I like what Dave said, just post to let people see what you're doing and move on. Don't dwell on what happens after. I think that's a good way to move forward. 👍
