  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The brand new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray has a 6.2L V8 that produces 460 HP with the performance exhaust. Chevy and the Car magazines say the the brand new Corvette will tear from 0-60 MPH in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of about 190 MPH. In another fun and informative TFLcar video we see just how close we can get the new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray with the Z51 performance package from 0-60 MPH at sea level. Can we match the GM's claimed time? Can GM match the claimed time? You'll have to watch this video to find out.

    Even the vehicle performance engineer for GM got a 5.15 zero to 60 time. The estimated 3.8 seconds seems to be a dream only in perfect conditions. Put the GTR on the same surface and it probably throws a 3 second time every time.

    I sold my GT many years ago when my first son was about to be born. I had to stop all of the street racing, NMRA and Mod Motor events. I bought an 87 Grand National after that with 50K original miles. That car I built myself in the garage over a year from the engine to the rear.

    This guy is consistently a POOR driver. When he tested the CAMARO, MUSTANG and CHALLENGER he always did far worse than anyone else. He is just a plain, poor driver 0-60. Whatever number he gets, you can easily subtract a full second if you are a professional. His clutch releasing and shifting are never crisp and he gets times of a high end HONDA ACCORD on this Stingray? 5.09 seconds? WTF? Get a real driver. He is constantly given directions when doing these and never listens.

    Thank you for the thoughtful comment. We think that most people read a number and just assume that anyone at anytime can make the car go that fast. Nothing could be further from the truth. Honestly, there is no such thing as definitive a 0-60 MPH time. There's only what any given driver can do, on any given day, in any give car...and these numbers vary greatly based on so many different variable.

    My 99 GT was actually tuned on the street by Job Spetter Jr. of Turbo People. He raced a 7 second Mustang for years and tuned many 6-7 second Mustangs & 1,000+ hp Supras & Grand Nationals so I knew my car was in good hands. It was about $300/hr but well worth it. Very little lag because of it being a V8 and the turbine housing was only a .82 A/R. Fully spooled by about 3,200 just after the stall converter hit. Unfortunately, no dyno numbers. estimated around 500 rwhp.

    Have you ever driven a 911? I used to own a 911 Turbo before I traded up for a more family friendly vehicle. At launch, not only is the weight being transferred to the rear, but the weight of the engine helps keep every thing under control. It's when you're "at speed" when the rear end gets a little happy, especially diving into a bend.

The launch control / PTM system seems to be touchy. Like I said, I did a 4.0. It's not a 3.8 like advertised, but this was also not on a drag strip nor under ideal conditions. I think 3.8 is perfectly reasonable for the car. Good luck guys

    I had a V2 S-trim for a while. I liked it better than the V1 because inside were helical cut gears for less noise. Once I went for a ride in a turbo foxbody that made almost 800 rwhp, I was hooked on turbos. I tossed the Vortech for a T-76 Turbo system. The car made 412 rwhp @ 7 psi on a 2V. Now the new 5.0 makes 560-580 rwhp at that boost level. Amazing heads. At 12-14 psi, it ran 10s. I don't know if I would have chosen a Mystic Cobra to mutilate and kill the value.

    After watching a few launches, it almost seems like the LC is set up very conservative and causes the engine to bog down for the first second or 2. If you notice the engine rumble is very low through most of first gear and then quickly jumps. It almost launches like the traction control is on, taking away throttle and then it returns. On the last run, listen to how the engine bogs.

    You've never seen the McLaren MP4-12C launch, have you? There's an episode of the American TopGear, where they drag race a Viper, a Lambo Gallardo, and the MP4-12C. Viper is RWD, and gets left pretty far behind, because it just spins and spins and spins, Lambo is AWD, and McLaren is RWD. Viper is at 640hp, Lambo is at 550 or something like that, and the McLaren was like 518. Guess who crossed the line first? The RWD McLaren. Seems some folks have a problem accepting that any performance parameter can be recorded but the results will vary due to a nearly limitless number of variables. The most realistic measurement will always be an average of multiple tests.

  • @Xeyad
    @Xeyad 11 лет назад

    0-60 times has way too many variables. In this video's case, it seemed the weather was hot so it hinders performance, and way too much wheelspin because the surface was slippery. Roman's first 2 runs had a little issue with shifting to 2nd gear, but the rest runs he shifted almost perfectly.
    Looking forward to the review. I absolutely trust Roman's opinions! I've been a subscriber since he had less than 100 subs! ;)

    When you watch the video, listen to the sound of the engine and how long it takes for the revs to come up with the traction management system on. I listened with my eyes closed and it almost sounds like he is starting in 2nd gear, but he isn't. I think the TM is more conservative than the previous version that allowed more wheel spin. Listen to the last run and how quickly the revs come up with it off and he runs a 4.88 basically bogging the launch. If he launched harder, the time would drop.

  • @MrNicholg
    @MrNicholg 11 лет назад

    No, it's correct. The previous gen ZR1 was geared higher with a 2.29 1st. This new Stingray has a 2.97 1st, with the same rear axle ratio. The ZR1 revved to 6500, the C7 to 6600rpm. The gearing could be higher in that thing with a lower time to 60 because it's making 180 more hp and 150 more torques at lower rpm.

    Rev matching makes the shifts a lot smoother, and smoother is faster. That shift to 2nd just before 60mph does drag down the 0-60 times, but this is the base car, so you can't expect the kind of aggressive gearing found in the Z06 and ZR1. Same reason the base car doesn't have 500+hp. Why would they give you all that in the entry-level car, when they can put it in the real performance models and charge a whole lot more for it?

    Just one word to make the car go faster.....Quattro...but the sound is amazing no doubt

    Don't get me wrong, I have driven cars with DCT..a GT-R, and a 911, and yes they are fast..but I would be bored with them after a couple of weeks in terms of the driving experience. People who prefer manuals love the sense of control that it brings to driving a
    powerful car, and they won't sacrifice that for gaining a couple of tenths from 0-60.

    The same thing happens with the ZR1. It's not about power and sticky tires alone. Suspension is the key to 0-60. Put a 911 there and watch GM engineers run away in shame. I mean, we're not asking GM to put together a Vette that cost $150K, but just to be a little more thorough with the Vette's design.

    Because you have the option of using the paddle shifters instead of the old fashioned clutch and manual shift lever.

    I just LOVE it when we have to come up with excuses why it won't perform as advertised. Just like the MPG of the Fusion Hybrid

    Fuck a ZR1, I want to see the Z06 version... corvette has always performed as a race car, esp c6, but the street versions have never translated as well and one was always in the 'plastic coffin'. Corvette still has a journey to match the quality of a Porsche in terms of European leather, hand-sewn contrasting stitching, PDK, engine mounts, brakes, coolers, etc. Right now only the Z/28 Camaro(or a future track-specific version of the C7) can truly compete with Porsche for track racing...

    The manual says max speed in 1st at 6600rpm redline is 50mph. Max speed in 2nd is 71mph. Thanks for playing.

    That was well driven. Getting a perfect launch from a stand still in a manual car is one of the hardest thing to do for a driver. And if the surface is bad, the times will be bad.
    Maybe it was not very clever from GM to do this event on this surface. Bad marketing ;-)

    Not sure what you're getting at here. The 370Z is close in price to the Camaro, and considering the Camaro is faster in pretty much every way, the Z doesn't hold a candle to the Corvette.
    Right now without the Z06/ZR1 the Corvette lands somewhere in the middle, but already the Z51 option Stingray has already utterly destroyed the GT-R on VIR. Granted that is comparing a pro driver in the Corvette to the best C&D driver in the GTR, but the difference was 7.5 seconds!
