very helpful ,thanks . i just noticed that the textured wall in the viewport is not resembling the material slot sample . the colors in the viewport are dimmer whereas yours are exactly the same . then i turned off the adjusted gamma (2.32) and swiched to default autodesk LUT and the issue was resolved . but now i am confused as to which setting gives the true colors . any suggestions ?

Does that " show material in viewport button have any use? With over 15 years with Max I have never needed to not see a material in viewport like that.

Well I can tell you that it also allows you to change what texture is displayed in the viewport. So while I may not ever want to have no texture displayed, I might want to use it for one of the composite textures so I can see more easily where I put a mask or something like that. At which point I can turn it on at the mask level, or turn on the normals maps for a clearer picture of what's going on there, etc. =) Other than being more specific about what I want to see in the viewport, no I really have never not wanted to see some texture on a model either.
