@7577 yes, it’s very much appropriate to make an announcement when going through turbulence say in cruise; where I would inform the cabin that I’m turning on the “Fasten seatbelt sign” for safety. But I would never attempt to quell somebody’s fears by reassuring them that we have control of our airplane. ESPECIALLY, on final and I don’t know ANY other pilots that would honestly.

I wish all captains had that kind of customer service for regular people who don't understand how safe they really are even in the heaviest of turbulence. It would help a lot of ppl with anxiety for sure.

I wouldn't exaggerate too much. If turbulence is extremely heavy especially for prolonged periods of time it can certainly stress the aircraft, cause the autopilot to disconnect etc. Most of the time it doesn't get that severe and of course pilots are highly trained but there is always a small possibility of something going wrong.
I'd also make the distinction between "heavy" and "severe" turbulence. The former is usually no problem but the latter is something that needs to be avoided.

I wish our pilot had said something like this on our Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Edinburgh in January!
We had horrendous turbulence and then we had to do an emergency landing in Amsterdam because of a burning smell.
The decent was rapid and unlike some flights where people cheer when you land after bad turbulence, everyone on our plane was in complete silence. People were crying and praying on the way down.

Anything super intense at ground level or having to do with vertical sheer occurring just above ground would typically have been avoided with an abort.

I just sat through it all calmly. Others around me seemed quite worried. Many passengers were clutching the seats in front with both hands. Some threw up.
One young lady across the aisle slept through the whole thing!
The pilot went round twice and in the end abandoned the idea of landing at Rijeka and we ended up 300km away in Treviso, Italy.
10 hours (4.5 hrs waiting for luggage then a coach) and a road trip from Italy, through Slovenia later, we finally reached our apartment in Rijeka.

Great video. The turbulence that you experience while landing is usually when the aircraft cuts through the clouds. Its harmless and very mild. Dreadful one is clear air turbulence (CAT) that happens at altitudes above 15000 feet. Thats much worse. Usually seen above the deserts during hot summers. Walking people and loose objects could be flung around. Thats supposed to be caused by air pockets (rather vacuum pockets) created due to heat or otherwise.
Fortunately, modern airplanes are much stronger than the might of the nature as far as CAT is concerned. You can enjoy turbulence as an experience if you like 🙂

I watched a great video explaining the types of turbulence, causes and so forth, and had never heard of CAT before that. While learning is great, perhaps it's true sometimes that ignorance is bliss! Spoken by someone who adores some aspects of flying, but is absolutely freaked out by turbulence! Given the nature of CAT and that it can occur unexpectedly at any moment is terrifying! Very glad to hear modern planes much stronger!

It’s like telling someone who’s having stage fright: your audience won’t kill you. We know flying is safe but jumping up and down bothers my sense of balance and is panicking me.

@@Martini0621 - I understand that. The point is it can be overcome with conscious efforts. I don't see why people carry this fear to every flight knowing fully well its harmless.

I was on a flight from Charlotte to LaGuardia where the sky was a beautiful blue all the way, but when we passed over DC there was a nasty storm below us.
Then the captain came on and said "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. YOU'RE NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS!! We have just been ordered by DC to lower our altitude". So, right into the storm we went. Thank God for ginger pills. 🤢
