This video will cover the basics of making a spoon ring to sell or give to your pretty girl. Lakeside Forge on Facebook: / 134284926675604 Live Blacksmith show: aroundthecabin....
I came here because I was curious about some Tom Wait's lyrics. "He gave her a dime store watch, and a ring made from a spoon". Well, it exists, and it's awesome!! Props to ya, dude!!
PLEASE STOP BEING NEGATIVE i watched the video enjoyed it then seen so many negative comments just say thank you for the free advice or move on there is so much in this world to be negative about be happy someone shared with you
Thanks, Steven! I've been making bracelets by bending them with pliers...way too much work. Thanks for showing me the tools and tutorial I needed! I cut the ends off with bolt cutters, makes a smooth cut for me. You're great
Don't pay attention to the negative comments. We are not perfect, and at least you took your time to make this beautiful ring, and we always learn something new. That's the way we learn in life with trials and errors. Keep your good work young guy👍👍.
What a great watch, made me want to go into the kitchen and look for some spoons but going to have to go out tomorrow and buy some from a charity shop and have a go myself thank you your very talented x
I love it, I have a ring but I did not know how they were doing, I have seen some, Earrings, Rings, Bracelets, and more. I will try to learn how to do it, I do not work. and I think will be fun to learn something and take my time doing a craft. Thanks for sharing.
I had a bracelet once made out of two silver spoons, the ends of which met together at the top front of the bracelet, the end nearest the spoon part formed the back of the bracelet and was joined together with jump rings and a clasp I believe. I don't know what or who happened to that bracelet. All I know is I really liked it a lot. The ring you made reminded me of it. Nice work.
This is a vey creative way to look into things around us and make a nice piece of jewellery. Thank you for sharing it with us and the video is very good the only thing I wished at the end when the ring is finished, if you showed it worn in some one's finger, so it could show the end product how it looks like when it's worn.
Thanks for the video. There is such a thing as a "bull pin" that was mentioned later in the video. Earlier in the video he did also call it a mandrel. Either a mandrel or bull pin could be used here.
Lol, assuming I'm an independent woman who's more mechanically inclined than most men, why not explain why mandrel improper and bull pin better? Not picking on you, just you tube is to help people learn how to do something! Be it a spoon ring, or highly mechanical/electrical ways to accomplish task the simplest way? Kid does it this way, everybody has their own way. Proper way? Lol. That would be fun to read why comments made. No worries. Your just last I'm reading! I'll check if you have how to make a spoon ring. Ever go in any home improvement store (minus ACE), BEING a female and ask a question, knowing they are just hourly non mechanical employees. The attitude is either you don't know what your talking about (means they don't know), or "I've never seen or heard of a "whatever your asking for"? Lol. Less most ACE HARDWARE, I've never left without getting what I want, even if my terminology or description isn't perfect. I just say what it does and why I need it, amazing how they eventually figure out what this spunky lady wants. Most planes say no and walk off. Just perspective from a Daddys girl who has grown up. Owned trucking Co, oil /has back in the day. Taught me to never allow ANYONE to made me feel inferior. Lol, given women weren't allowed to sign commercial loan until 1988 without a man's signature, Guess progress is taking time!
I find that a grinder cuts it a lot smoother than sawing it. As for the bending, depending on whether it's cheap or a sterling silver, you should always bend it by hand (with a tight pull) to round it up. Hacking it with a piece of metal into a spiral shape will make it look bumpy.
Theres a reason i dont usually read comments, however sometimes i look for input to see what others say on how easy or difficult, or whatever reason. But the guys comment below makes me ill, and im reminded of how some sick comment will help me to stop reading and sharing... i pray for him... and for the protection of all babies. Thank you for the tutorial though
drill the size hole you want in a 2 by 4 cut it in half lay your spoon on top of that lay another round object on top the spoon and hit with hammer as the spoon goes down it will make half a circle then just rotate until you get it round
First thing that should be done when making a spoon ring is torch it with a torch to a dull red. Then it will easily bend around your mandrel. It will be work hardened when done because of the bending. It's much easier this way and you dont risk the chance of cracking your metal.
i hate watching people using tools when they haven't got a clue screw a couple of blocks to your bench to act as stops on your mandril. lock your mandril in the vice not the ring and tap the ring round the form ;)
+Ryan Fager You do not want to do that, because you risk discoloring the metal. Just heat it enough to make it bend "a little easier". Be gentle on the heat, especially with silver.
I would suggest to list the tools upfront-in an overview, I was hoping I could make one but since I don't have access to most of the tools- the instruction couldn't help me. If you can light it a bit more too so we can see better.. but good stuff... wish I could do it...
You’ll really feel it, trying to fashion stainless steel into a ring without a jeweller’s ring shank bender to help you. Sterling silver bends like butter by comparison. 🥄
You seem to be making life hard for yourself, wouldn't it be easier to manipulate it around the mandrel with a pliers or alternatively use a wrap n tap and a pliers?
_Gaffer_ tape. Gaffer is film slang for studio electrician. They use that particular high-tensile tape for securing cables safely to the floor all over film and TV sets. I’m not sure why everyone’s saying it’s expensive. Considering how strong it is, I think it’s fairly priced. And I’m in a country where everything is twice the price it is in the USA. 🥴

Whats wrong with term"Hillbilly?", maybe refer to precise location of where a Hillbilly lives. I've seen all over the Country! Shame on you! Its disrespectful to America's Term Hillbilly. Beverly Hillbillies Show? Your forgiven but term used as negative feedback. Those hillbillies are where?

Never take any advice from RUclips. Look at this guy. Like using his grandpas tools and a ring sizer he purchased on Ebay. That is not how you make a ring I am 100% sure. I think you need to start off with having tools and machines for processing metals first. Then you might need some materials like plaster and wax. You can cut a copper pipe and have a ring in no time. LOL That will impress the ladies. @@ This is when you take too many drugs or have lost sight of any standards. can't believe youtube isn't recommending this at the top when it's the best video for this somewhat niche thing. good shit man
I've been trying to learn how to do this thanks for easy instructions do u sell the rings

I wouldn't exactly call this "diy" for most folks… but still quite interesting!
love your DIY ring I am inspired to find my silver spoon and give it a try

Smart and funny! I'm not sure we would put it to our shop, but I would be happy to own one! Great stuff!
If you anneal the fork it will be easier to bend. I really like your method. Thanks for your knowledge.🤘🤠🤘
I always wondered how those were made :) thank you for sharing good job!!!

Nylon cuttingboard cut into strips as large vise jaws. Countersunk screw to hold work pieces without maring finished pieces.

really safe shop practices you have there
cool good luck selling them i hope you make a lot of money and thank you for sharing also great instructions very well done
Aneal and quench often to keep the silver mailable throughout the shaping process. The more you work the metal the harder and more brittle it gets.
very nice, and i was going to sent a bit of cutlery to charity shop next week,,may kkep a little now!
Surprised that you didn't anneal the silver first. Annealing would make this work so much easier

your such a great teacher, sharing your advice
Thanks man I really had a hard time understanding the guy in the video 😂
Absolutely beautiful 😍💕💕💕💕💕💖 thanks for the video
If you heated it up till red, would it be a lot easier to bend bend & shape ?
+Ryan Fager You do not want to do that, because you risk discoloring the metal. Just heat it enough to make it bend "a little easier". Be gentle on the heat, especially with silver.
Heat until black, not red. And then quench. But only with _sterling silver_ cutlery, not EPNS, as heating that will remove all your silver plating.
very good
Nice! Does this work with forks as well?

Watch Robert Nurden and his video "How to make a very easy ring". He has some short cuts and home made forms that helped me a lot.
Thanks for sharing...awesome & unique
i found you in a diresta video, you have some cool videos, you have one new sub ;)
Ok so i have roughly the same spoon shape as that guy and i just cant seem to get the wider end to bend it just wont budge any tips?
Well done!
Annealing the sliver first would be a much more effective way of forming the ring.
friend what is the name of this long tool that you use to wind the handle of the fork ... ??? please! thankful
thank you! that was a great tutorial!
Nice ring! It would have been helpful if you annealed it first, keep up the good work
:-)
Aren't most spoons stainless steel or other material? And can they still be used for this?

Cool
Very cool!!
I have a small baby spoon that was used in 1899 that I would like to make into a spoon ring, can this be done with smaller spoons??
yes
what brand gaff tape do you use????
Great
Hi I'd love to buy one off you
...maybe anneal the silver before trying to bend it? would make it easier, just thought i would mention.
What about other types of metals?
so cool!!!
You seem to be making life hard for yourself, wouldn't it be easier to manipulate it around the mandrel with a pliers or alternatively use a wrap n tap and a pliers?
I think a mandrel & wrap n tip pliers would work better
Music A Bit Loud, Loved the style of the ring, You make it Look so easy, i must try it.
thanks for sharing.
Cool. Thanx!
Hello, could you tell me what you said the tape is that you used in the vice? "Gaffe tape" ?!?! Thanks!

IS THAT TAPE THE SAME AS HEAT DUCKED TAPE????
Can I do this with silver plated flatware?
If you sell, how much?
thats great tfs
Thanks, now all I need is a dime store watch.
Do u sell these
if you want to cut the spoon head out just bend it and it will break
Do you sale your rings?
