The original Chicago lineup was Chicago at its best. Once they lost Terry Kath, it was never the same. He was the heart and soul of the band.

This whole concert is freaking amazing.
Please react to: Does anybody really know what time it is. Sung by Robert Lamm.
Terry's a beast on guitar and having 3 singers with distinctive voices is fantastic.

The appreciation you bros. have for the music blows my mind! I love everything about this video and what you said came straight from your hearts. Renee was so kind to send the awesome T-shirts! I think my favorite is the AC/DC shirt because it reminds me of the 9th grade, carrying around my transistor radio hoping to catch it if they played any of it on the radio. Haha! Those days are so long ago! This entire video made ME SMILE!

This song was part of a suite of songs they performed live called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" which started and ended with this song, hence the cut in the video... there were songs they cut in this video. Watch the whole thing, or listen to Ballet... in it's entirety on Chicago: Live at Carnegie Hall. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet_for_a_Girl_in_Buchannon

Terry was a force of nature, a shooting star, a bright beautiful full moon that eclipsed too soon. I still get choked up just even listening to them. It helps to appreciate the fact that they had the worldwide success they deserved and enjoyed it while they were very young. But Terry, you broke a million hearts on January 23, 1978, not the least of which was mine.💔

Lol You got it bros. I'm 45, so I don't remember the Terry Kath years. Just the '80's after Terry passed away. And Chicago was good and very popular, but damn, Chicago in the '70's with Terry, was AMAZING!. JIMI HENDRIX said that Terry Kath was better than him.😳 Anyway, good job fellas. 👏 I actually came here because I got reminded of my best friend who died in 2000 in a car accident. He always played this on the juke box and said "listen to those horns son". Great song!👍🤘

  • @tommack9395

Yes, it's cut because Make Me Smile is just a short piece of Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan - it's kind of classically built with four movements in total iow - Make Me Smile and Colour My World are part of the same song. Most people don;t even get it... early Chicago was very progressive, soul rock with a heavy jazz influence like Mile's Kind of Blue, arrayed with long format themes like that of Yes or ELP...

Wasn't at Tanglewood but I did see Chicago at the famous Saturday in the Park concert in Soldier Field Chicago in September 1977. Almost 3 hours of music from 7 very talented professionals. Crying shame the group became an insipid ballad band after Terry died. Delayed their induction into the Hall of Fame by at least two decades.

I was there, TG....cause the following January - during my senior year of HS (Schurz) - we lost him - and I still haven't gotten over it. The band had to go on, but the dynamic changed without
      Terry.

Sometime you should listen to the entire Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon from Chicago II. It is 13 minutes long and includes several movements including Make Me Smile and Colour My World. That’s why you saw the cut in the live video. Make Me Smile begins and concludes the “Ballet.”

  • @NoviJimB

If you haven't already, check out the studio version of 'Ballet For A Girl From Buchanon'. It's a suite of several songs, it starts with 'Make Me Smile' and ends with 'Now I Need You', which is the 'continuation' of 'Make Me Smile'. 'Colour My World' is in it too. It was all written by the trombonist, James Pankow. It's not just that's it's such great music, it's the fact that it's a complicated piece of music with constant key changes. I don't know how he ever came up with all that. You two definitely have a good grasp of what truly great rock and roll is. On a big departure from Chicago, you need to check out some Spirit. They had a very unique and diverse sound. most people just know 'Nature's Way' and 'I Got A Line On You', maybe '1984' . All great songs. But they had a lot of other great stuff. Check out 'Fresh Garbage', 'When I Touch You' and 'Dark Eyed Woman'.

IMO Terry Kath was Chicago. Check Out Color My World live. Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it felt like to be the best guitarist of all and he replied “ I don’t know, ask Terry Kath” Hendrix was fascinated with Terry’s skills.

This was a cut of the seven part suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". It opens with Make Me Smile and closes with "Now More Than Ever". Those two parts welded together made the "single" release of "Make Me Smile" as heard on the radio and in this video. The suite in the middle has "Colour My World" also sung by Kath.
On the debut album Chicago Transit Authority you need to react to "Poem 58". Kath on guitar will blow your mind!

You need to try and find the documentary called, Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago. It’s a really good documentary about the beginnings of the band and their trip to success. It’s told by the members themselves. I highly recommend it. Maybe one of your subscribers can find it and mail it to you as a gift.

The studio version of this song is actually a lot better than this particular live rendition and in order to isolate Make Me Smile in it's whole, it needed to be edited from the whole ballet; so you are correct about the cut leaving out the in between suites. Here's the link to the of the edited version off one of their compilation albums, so you can hear it the same way you heard the live version:

Agree about studio version on this one. But ...you gotta check out this unbelievable Chicago Tribute Band from Russia! Holy cow. A full orchestra called LEONID AND FRIENDS. Lots of videos on RUclips of them. Mind blowing actually. And they do NOT speak English, but sing it with perfect diction and feel the lyrics. Hits every note. Enjoy. 🎵🎵🎵
