I cried when Terry Kath died. They weren’t the same. But you can’t take away that their highest charting singles were dominated by Peter Cetera. His Bass playing and singing were pretty damn masterful as well. “Free” and “Dialogue” would not have been the same without him and Terry playing off each other.

"Make Me Smile" is the opening movement of a seven-part suite titled "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon", written by Chicago's trombone player James Pankow. Danny Seraphine was the drummer, he was highly praised by the great drummer Buddy Rich. Jimi Hendrix saw them playing at the Whisky a Go Go and told the band "you've got a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me!". Terry Kath was the guitar player and baritone voice on this track. Seven white dudes from Chicago (Keyboard player Robert Lamm was born in Brooklyn, NY but raised in Chicago). with a lot of funk, soul, R&B and jazz influence in their rock. You need to experience the full seven movement suite, which includes "Colour My World" (also sung by Kath) in the middle. What you played here is the radio single version, which has the suite's ending "Now More Than Ever" appended to the end of "Make Me Smile". Another MUST track in "Poem 58" on their debut album as "Chicago Transit Authority". Kath on guitar, Seraphine on drums and Cetera on Bass open the track with 4 minutes of instrumental funk before the vocals come in. Kath's guitar on "Poem 58" will have you agreeing with Hendrix that Kath was incredible.

People these days dismiss Chicago because of songs like You're the Inspiration, but they hit hard and had some of the BEST musicians and singers around. Terry Kath (the singer in this song as well as the guy in blue above your head in the video) is so underrated as both a singer and guitar player, their drummer gets overlooked, and people always seem to sleep on Peter Cetera as a bass player (the one that sang on 25 or 6 to 4), but this song lets each of them shine. You've done 2 of their top songs, in my opinion, so next should be Beginnings for both great musicianship as well as the golden voice of Robert Lamm.
I agree with everything you said. I also agree with the next suggestion as it is a masterpiece and a great example of Robert Lamn on lead vocals. Lamn and Kath were phenomenal. Cetera, in my opinion, to a lesser extent. I love these old groups, many who had 2 or 3 lead singers, whose music is timeless. Three Dog Night is another example of a band with 3 lead singers.
To me, Terry Kath (RIP) was the heart and soul of the band and he brought the rock edge to the band. As others have stated you really need to see him perform live to witness his greatness. The great Jimi Hendrix (RIP) appreciated Kath’s exceptional talent. His guitar playing has been under appreciated by music journalists but not by fellow musicians of the era. The singer is Terry Kath, the lead guitarist, whose voice has been compared to being a white Ray Charles. They all went to music school in Chicago, several had tryouts ofr the symphony. The drummer is Dan Seraphine - very underrated also.
This is the quintessential Chicago. 25 is the preeminent Chicago song but this really showcases all of the elements of the band. Danny Seraphine smokes the drum track. Terry Kaths whisky voiced vocals perfectly contrast the tight horn arrangement. And Peter Cetera, who sang the lead vocal in 25 or 6 to 4 incredible moving bass line drives the song. My favorite Chicago tune.
Chicago takes me back to summer time in my high school years. They were always putting out hit after hit. I am glad you can learn about the music we grew up to.
Grew up and love Chicago. Best concerts ever. But Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire concert was absolutely amazing. They both went on stage separately played their songs but both bands came together to play the songs we were all waiting for by both groups and sang them together as one large band. I'll never forget it.
Since you like this style of music, try auditioning the band Blood Sweat & Tears. Songs like Spinning Wheel, God bless the child, More and more, Lucretia McEvil and others. You'll be pleasantly surprised, they are as polished as Chicago.

Chicago are true legends. They had a long career, and were super successful in the 70's and 80's. For me (and many), they were their best in the 70's. So talented and ambitious. By the 80's they had changed into being more of an AM radio singles/ballad band. The singer in this song was Terry Kath (who people said he sang like a "white Ray Charles"), but was also a lethal guitar player - one of the best. He sadly died in '78, and the band (for me) was never the same.

Okay, at the risk of sharing information that someone else has already shared, here goes.... Terry Kath is a BEAST on the guitar, one of the most underrated of all time. Rumor has it that when Chicago was just starting out and opened for Jimi Hendrix, he told one of the band members that "your horn players sound like one horn, and your guitar player is better than me." He is also the one sharing those soulful, gritty vocals on this song, and your question about "is he black " is not silly at all. Many people have often asked that, and some people call him "the white Ray Charles." He tragically accidentally passed away in January of 1978. You were right on with the vocals; this is not the same singer as "25 or 6 to 4." Chicago used three lead vocalists: Terry Kath, the soaring high vocals of bass player Peter Cetera (who sang on "25 or 6 to 4"), and the smoooooth vocals of keyboard player Robert Lamm. Danny Seraphine....MY MAN. He is the gentleman who was lighting the drums on fire. As a young drummer, I patterned everything I did after Danny and his phenomenal skills. Rock chops with jazz sensibilities. The horn section: second to none. So clean, so tight, and SO good!! They are all Russian and I have never heard a cover band so good, They also do some Earth Wind and Fire and a Steely Dan song. They are some fantastic musicians. I agree with everything you said. I also agree with the next suggestion as it is a masterpiece and a great example of Robert Lamn on lead vocals. Lamn and Kath were phenomenal. Cetera, in my opinion, to a lesser extent. I love these old groups, many who had 2 or 3 lead singers, whose music is timeless. Three Dog Night is another example of a band with 3 lead singers.

To me, Terry Kath (RIP) was the heart and soul of the band and he brought the rock edge to the band. As others have stated you really need to see him perform live to witness his greatness. The great Jimi Hendrix (RIP) appreciated Kath’s exceptional talent. His guitar playing has been under appreciated by music journalists but not by fellow musicians of the era.

this song was written by the Trombonist, James Pankow. the drums in this are out of this world! The singer is Terry Kath, the lead guitarist, whose voice has been compared to being a white Ray Charles. They all went to music school in Chicago, several had tryouts ofr the symphony. The drummer is Dan Seraphine - very underrated also.
This is the quintessential Chicago. 25 is the preeminent Chicago song but this really showcases all of the elements of the band. Danny Seraphine smokes the drum track. Terry Kaths whisky voiced vocals perfectly contrast the tight horn arrangement. And Peter Cetera, who sang the lead vocal in 25 or 6 to 4 incredible moving bass line drives the song.

Grew up and love Chicago. Best concerts ever. But Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire concert was absolutely amazing. They both went on stage separately played their songs but both bands came together to play the songs we were all waiting for by both groups and sang them together as one large band. I'll never forget it.

Chicago are true legends. They had a long career, and were super successful in the 70's and 80's. For me (and many), they were their best in the 70's. So talented and ambitious. By the 80's they had changed into being more of an AM radio singles/ballad band. The singer in this song was Terry Kath (who people said he sang like a "white Ray Charles"), but was also a lethal guitar player - one of the best. He sadly died in '78, and the band (for me) was never the same.

Terry Kath is a BEAST on the guitar, one of the most underrated of all time. Rumor has it that when Chicago was just starting out and opened for Jimi Hendrix, he told one of the band members that "your horn players sound like one horn, and your guitar player is better than me." He is also the one sharing those soulful, gritty vocals on this song, and your question about "is he black " is not silly at all. Many people have often asked that, and some people call him "the white Ray Charles." He tragically accidentally passed away in January of 1978.
You were right on with the vocals; this is not the same singer as "25 or 6 to 4." Chicago used three lead vocalists: Terry Kath, the soaring high vocals of bass player Peter Cetera (who sang on "25 or 6 to 4"), and the smoooooth vocals of keyboard player Robert Lamm.

They are all Russian and I have never heard a cover band so good, They also do some Earth Wind and Fire and a Steely Dan song. They are some fantastic musicians. All White musicians and singer....that surprised a lot of people. And the city of Chicago made them shorten their name from "Chicago Transit Authority" to just CHICAGO. Brilliant band.
