Fun fact- this is what Kate did in her audition for SNL. Bill Hader, who was one of the cast members on the panel auditioning her, was kicked out for laughing too hard

It isn’t incorrect, there’s a special SNL auditions video in which we actually see a little of Kate doing this Penelope Cruz bit for her audition, but obviously Hader found another bit of the audition funnier and commented on that.

As much credit as Kate’s getting, people are still over looking how hard it is to maintain the Castilian accent, whilst Sofia’s thick accent is also there as well. She could’ve easily slipped into a Columbian accent without knowing

Kate McKinnon is a comedic legend as far as I am concerned.....her range is just incredible. The way she kept that castilian accent going when having to pronounce all those heavy chemical words was just priceless....could watch her all day. SNL is so much poorer for not having her there any more...I miss her talent so much!!!
Sofia is one of those women who is 100x more intelligent than she acts. She has to be with how hilarious she is.

I had to come watch Kate McKinnon's first SNL Sketch to see where it all started, as I learned she's leaving SNL after this current season. she's one of the best SNL cast members of all time and can't wait to see her hosting SNL or coming back as a guest in the future and I am also excited about other projects she will be a part of. Thank you for all the laughs, Kate!

Kate does something not many actors can do: SHE NAILED THE ACCENT!!! In this sketch she’s speaking with a Castilian accent (just like Penélope, but somewhat different from Sofía’s). Not many actors can understand these language subtleties. ¡Bravo, Kate: eres magnífica! 🙌 👍🤩

-To complaining Spaniards: Yes, I'm pretty aware that our wonderful nation has many different accents but I think that everyone trying to speak English correctly would soften his regional accent and would end up sounding like the girl portraying Penélope.

Castellano is the language that originated in Spain and spread to most Latin America continent because of the firts spanish people from CASTILLA. This language does not sound like the typical spanish from Madrid. Lucky for us the people in Latinamerica our languge has also words from our native people, french, italian and english wich it makes the languages rich and beautiful.
Penelope Cruz impersonation was Kate Mckinnon's audition piece for SNL, so this is literally a walk in the park for her. She's so great.

I think that's a top Kate McKinnon skit for me. Great Penelope, and she didn't break character. And Sofia was fantastic as well - surprisingly very hard for most celebrities to "play themselves."
It was tremendous ensemble work for everyone. Not for a moment anyone breaks the rhythm or the flow of each character, even with some subtext!
