  • My thoughts on the classic Nikon 85mm F1.4G lens and whether it is still a worthy purchase in 2023. Video has plenty of Nikkor 85mm F1.4 photo samples included and a brief comparison to the Nikkor 85mm F1.8 budget version.

Awesome video and review. I really enjoy my 85mm F1.4G. Not in a hurry to replace it.

Finally an FTZ user! Just what I needed 🙏🏼 Definitely more motivated for the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 now. Thank you :)

Just amazing. I still like this old lens for that exact reason, the buttery creamy smooth character of those 9 blades. Ja, newer can be a tad more sharp but I chose character as well. We didn't drop that kind of quid on big bright glass to use at 2 or 2.8. But have you compared it to the f1.8 version at same stops? I don't have 1.8 versions to try? just curious

Hi! The 1.8 was a good lens and I don’t remember any issues with sharpness, I think it’s more the colour rendering and the extra 2/3 of a stop on this. It’s hard to exactly pinpoint what it is, it just has a look.
One of my favourite photographers switched to Sony and a F1.2 and I remember him kind of complaining that it was too clinical.

No theyre old hat primesvare ditched in favour of pro zooms , how many people here swear by 85 1.4s when you rarely get to use 1.4 on them 2.8 - 5.6 is more realistic in mid day , all gold ring lenses are nano but zooms are a stage further theyre fl coated colour corrected awesomeness , the 58mm 1.4 is gold ringed to , thats in a dark bag as well

I use it at f1. 4-1.8 quite often. Who shoots mid day? It's the worst and most harsh light
