Many people won't like this lense because of the soft dream like look but that is the exact reason why the pro's images stand out from the rest. Thank you for sharing this!
Very well done. Very lovely and inspiring images. For some reason, the photos of the shoeless bride really resonated with me. I'm curious to know if you think this lens still has its place in modern photography. I use it adapted on a Nikon Z8. I've often considered letting it go but I just haven't been able to. Newer lenses are certainly better on paper but something about it always feels magical to me.
Thanks for the kind words! It's been quite a few years since I used this lens. It felt sad letting it go, but I've been very happy with other 85mm lenses. I used Nikon mirrorless for a while, then Fuji, but am now mostly Sony. I use the Sigma 85mm Art and I think as always it's the subject of the picture that is what really matters.
This video describes the ease and feeling I had when using this lens for the first time. I feel something different. I took such amazing photos with it and Nikon D750, the colors were deeply beautiful, the image was worth every detail. It recorded me as if it were today. Nikon D750 and 85mm 1.4G is a good choice for 2024. Big hug from Brazil Nikon fan.
I have a story, I had this lens in the closet for a while, and recently I sold it thru Mercado Libre, so I bought a new 60mm macro for some shots I need to make and for digitizing some negatives with my Nikon D850. So in the shipping of the other lens they drop the lens , so the client send it back. I couldn’t be happier about this, because at the end nothing happened to the lens, only to the filter, so I received it today, and took of the filter, and it’s working just fine! And now I watch your video and you just inspire me to put it to work. I just did some shots with the D850 and they look great. Really funny how this things happen. Thank you for sharing, stay safe.
It’s truly a beautiful video and your narrative voice. I ordered my 85mm 1.4G to use with my Nikon F4 during Miss France 2020 as I am photographer here. Can’t wait to enjoy this lens. Thank you for your video
Miguel Angel Briones, when important people or things in your life come back to you, it's a gift from God. You are a special person Miguel and a great photographer! 👌
Thanks for the video. Alot of photographers keep saying they shoot at 1.4 and get sharp images. I tried 1.4 and I get alot of blurry photos even at a high shutter speed. I thougjt there is something wrong with my camera or lens.. I'm glad you mentioned f2. Thats what I shoot between 2 or 2.8 now 1.4 when the subject is not looking directly at the lens.
Thanks JoJo. I'm no expert, but I believe most lenses are at their sharpest a when the aperture is smaller - maybe f5 perhaps or smaller - but lenses vary. It's nice to have 1.4 available is the light is low, but f2 or 2.8 is just great.
Fantastic pictures Chris! Ive got this lens and love it, I'm no where near to your standard of photography though, thanks for the video, really enjoyed it.
Thanks Craig, they're both fantastic lenses. The 1.8 might even be sharper, not that it matters. It's definitely lighter 🙂 Generally I just love that focal length.
I own 1.8g as well and I was wondering if I need to switch it to 1.4 since everyone who owns it has been saying good about it. But sometimes I do have hard time on focusing tho.
Hi Trevor, that's a really great reason to hire the lens! I hope you have fun with it. Of course take pictures at f1.4, but I'd suggest taking some stopped down a little too, otherwise the depth of field can be extremely thin :-)
Wow amazing images Chris!! Was flash used for some of these images? Any fuji lens that could come near this nikon lens? In terms of image quality. I suppose the xf56 or xf90mm?
Thank you Mr Bop. They were all without flash except photos at @2:01 and @2:56 which were in a studio with flash. The Fuji 56 is absolutely wonderful - I have video in that. But I have not used the 90 though - although people seem to always say that it's a fantastic lens. Thanks again. Edit
The 90 is nice, but it is equivalent to a 135 F/3ish lens. The 50 F/1 will be the closest you get to this lens, when you can buy it. For now, the 56 is about an f/1.8 but the APD is supposed to give you better Bokeh than the regular 56.
Great video, great pictures. Considering buying the 85mm 1.4. I recently added a D810 to my xt3, to get the fullframe look and more MP. But does it matter? Now, after shooting with the nikon, i really appreciate the colorscience of the fuji much more. What are your thoughts on the two cameras compared?
Hi. That's for the comment. I'm afraid I've never used the Nikon 810. For weddings I use the D750. I think for me the big difference and advantage is having the optical viewfinder. There's something very reassuring and reliable about that. Also if the full frame look it's about a more shallow depth of field, then the Fuji 56mm f1.2 gets pretty close to it. I tend to shoot the 85mm at f2 or 2.8 anyhow. So, overall I'd say there are not huge differences. Like you mentioned though - there is something nice about the Fuji colours. But Nikon can look lovely too.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I have just purchased the 1.4G and as I was unable to test it in store, I'm wondering if you could advise whether yours has a silent focus. The one I have purchased seems to be quite loud in comparison to my other Nikkor lenses. Your help is appreciated
@@ChrisBoland I bet, but like you said, it is the person behind the camera that matters. And if that person knows what he or she is doing, then a lens like this is gold. If not, it's just another lens. In your case, it's gold
Thank you very much. What trouble are you having with it? It focuses fast and accurately for me. At 1.4 the depth of field is very thin, so I only use that when I don't need everything in focus.
I see. With focus and recompose that could be a problem. Using focus and recompose with very shallow depth of field is always going to be difficult. I wish there were more autofocus points on the D750, but for portraits I find the existing ones enough. I would try to avoid using focus and recompose.
Q: the black&whites, did u shoot in camera or post process them after. the color photos, did u use the ur post processing or preset pack ? i like the saturated coffee look if that makes any sense.
Hi Bruce, thanks for watching. I think these are a real mix. Everything is shot in raw and edited in Lightroom. Mostly it's a case of playing around until it feels right, but there were a handful of wedding ones that were an old Ektar preset I think. Apologies that I can't be more helpful :-)
Wondering if you've ever tried the fujinon 56mm 1.2? And how it compares to the 85mm Nikon? On the fence and thinking about trying Nikon full frame dslr. Right now I'm using a Fujifilm x-t2 with a 35mm f2.
Hi. Yes, I have the 56mm and have a video with some pictures here - ruclips.net/video/UkHC6-yvoOQ/видео.html It's a wonderful lens - it's hard to say how it compares. The image quality and look is magic. I use the Nikon 85mm at weddings more for the Nikon body and the optical viewfinder than the lens itself. Have you tried the Fuji 35 1.4? I rarely use my 56 these days as I find the 35 1.4 is so nice for portraits.
Thank you! I'm sure it will work on that camera - but the 3100 has a smaller sensor, so the field of view will be tighter than 85 on a full frame camera.
If it's how I think you're describing it - just seven people in a row, then you wouldn't need anywhere near f16. If they are more or less on the same focal plane you can have them in focus and also a shallow depth of field if you'd like.
@@ChrisBoland oh I understand not needing the max but your photos incredibly inspire me to purchase the 85mm. I just wanted to know if you thought it a suitable choice for the 7 people
I mostly shoot with my 70-200vr II, never tried 85mm. Though I must say I see people are using it. Would you say they are similar? Which one would you take between those two?
Hi. I used to use a Nikon 70-200 for weddings, but I found it quite a big and heavy lens. You get much more compression with 200, but personally I prefer the 85.
I don't know the exact distance, but I remember for that photo I made a lot of effort to move the other guests back so I could take it. So, it's not a lens for tight situations.
Clever compositions & poetic commentary
