We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

I am glad that you are able to film the process, it is absolutely fascinating! Roberta is glowing.🇨🇦❤️
💕
Good luck with the project. Consider having the rudder shaft passing through a strong/reinforced pipe with the top being above the water line. This is a great design safety feature not all boats have (in case you have a rudder failure). I believe newer Bavaria yachts introduced the design and other brands started adopting it. Similar designs are available for the propeller shaft but all depends on the propulsion system you'll choose.
No hole in our boat is gonna be under the waterline, as it was on the last boat 😉
@@OddLifeCrafting Smart people always learn with experiences. Boa sorte!
The workers are incredible with their trade and skills - the engineering is also incredible. What a great episode.
An incredible worker would over engineer their tack welds from the start.
@@PondoSinatra680 Or build the hull so it matched the bulkhead or vice versa..aluminum doesn't like to be welded numerous times.
And it does match. That is the entire concept of this method of construction. But in order to have less internal structures they use much thicker plates than usual in “normal” framed boats of course there is more tension. But with thicker plates you can weld with less deformation. They been building boats like this for over 60 years and there are many amazing boats sailing until today. Just like our last boat that was also designed by Meta. 😊
Excellent videography showing progress. Looks great!
Thanks
Fascinating and truly remarkable. Building this boat is going to be so interesting. Keep well and safe. James.
☺️
Please thank the guys from us for letting you film. Amazing to see what goes on and the expertise they have. From someone who used to build trains.
☺️
Loving your enthusiasm about the hull building process, Duca!!
☺️
Aluminum is a popular material for yacht construction due to its light weight, strength, and resistance to corrosion.
However, aluminum yachts can be vulnerable to certain types of damage, such as fatigue cracking or stress fractures, which can be exacerbated by extreme weather conditions or improper maintenance.
It's possible that these factors may have played a role in the Bayesian's sinking, though again we won't know for sure until the investigation is complete.
For sure every material has it’s weak points. And there are also ways to mitigate that. Like good electricali stalation. Thicker plates to avoid fatigue. And so on. This boat is designed with the strongall method, that means much thicker plates for the same size of boat. And that for sure helps a lot. But again, the Titanic sank, so of course nothing is ever 100% bullet proof 😅. But this is definitely a pretty strong boat for a 43ft. 😊
You guys must be so excited, looking good Roberta🤰❤🔥
☺️
Cool to see the same proces again, we recently (last year) build a boat to simmilar buildstyle. (Only steel).
Keep on going 👍
🥰⛵️⛵️
Nice to see a black guy in not only the aluminum welding industry but also the boating industry.
Yes that bulkhead is a terrific idea. Just watched a video where there skeg rudder was ripped off in a collision in a steel boat and it started to sink and they were done for. I love unsinkable boat idea. I think Titanic had lots of bulkheads like that one. Lol.
☺️⛵️
Vc.merecem.Fiquem bem.❤❤❤❤
🥰
It is so awesome they let you film the construction as it really shows the uniqueness of the StrongAll method. It's one thing explaining how the hull will be built and it another thing entirely watching the transformation of thick flat aluminum panels into a boat.
🥰
That is really difficult work! Good thing they have a gantry crane....energy...and patience. This is kind of like Plukky's welding/grinding channel for a while.
I don’t really understand all the technical parts, but I know you are very involved. Roberta looks wonderful.
☺️
Now it starts to look a boat, and watching the process is amazing, like watching a 3d printer slowly adding layers and the objects taking shape.
Sure this method of building needs lots of calculations, the right mix of precision and "brute force" but seeing a thick sheet of metal bending like that to the willing of the builders really blow my mind!
☺️
Nice work that doesnt look easy at all, hope it all ends up straight and panels that all line up good.
Very well documented and explained…Great job..
☺️
She's starting to look like a sail boat... Roberta is looking happy and healthy too...
☺️
What a big boat. Congratulations
Thanks ☺️
Wow, loved this video, they way they weld, then pull, then weld, then pull, wow!
💕
I saw Distant Shores TV new boat has a third rudder on the centreline and just aft of the prop, makes the boat much more manoeuvrable .
Wow-I didn’t know there was that much power in just the shape of metal. But some is 1/2” thick so I understand but how it will be ‘relaxed’ once it is all together 😳!
☺️⛵️
Good to see there is progress on the boat!
Thanks for the video and talk to you soon!
Besides the skilled guys, the shop is amazing! Btw, Roberta looks fantastic with the belly growing 😊
☺️
I was going to say, how did I miss this? But i watched it on Patreon! ❤❤❤🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼
😁
Congratulations, great episode, excellent explanation, and as someone said, Roberta is glowing. Roberta, I love the fact that you are not using make up. I good mother starts there. abraco
So glad to see what progress is going on. Always enjoy your videos. 👍😎
🥰
With the wrong temperature in the future the hull can be like a popcorn. Be very careful ???
Looks a pretty brutal process with all sorts of stress concentrations in the plate work plus lots of ‘heat affected zones’ from the tacking and full welds. Have you talked to the fabricators on what measures they deploy to ‘normalise’ the material structure and overcome these issues.
Roberta is glowing, she looks so HEALTHY! How is the baby process going Ducca?
Wondering if your going to the Olympics in Paris?
Fascinating to watch these guys !
☺️
Really good progress this week, guys! Keep going strong. Abraços, Mario
🤗
🥰
Great craftsmen. But, no safety glasses in sight. Just an observation by one who never wore safety glass until he woke up after surgery.
dang that was a sudden end.. bang over!.. Well at least we got our fix.. carry on you guys..
Amazing!!!
☺️
It is a tough jpb😅
😁
Been with you guys from the beginning and I love you’re fortitude I wish I could be doing this
So very cool, love the build!
🥰
🥰
So glad to see progress.
Make sure no one comes aboard with pennies in their pocket!! 🤠
😬
And now France goes on holiday for the month of August. Hope you have it covered!
Those workers got skills you don't get on the school-bench, that's for sure.
Think I have too look up META's strongall patent to see what ut us all about.
Looking forward to next episode.
We explained about Strongall method on this video ruclips.net/video/ziD8HrNPteA/видео.htmlsi=Otj9MEM4c1Iz-uwp
It's been a minute since I have seen the show. Congrats on the baby (if I heard that right 😁) also, the boat looks wonderful.
☺️ 🤰🏼
Oi, Anderson. Falamos sobre as diferenças e vantagens neste vídeo aqui ruclips.net/video/ziD8HrNPteA/видео.htmlsi=9qUdpBxWKmE41u9V
When the boat builder finishes is all you get a finished hull but finished port hole hatches engine plumbing electrical be completed steering installed etc
Félicitations aux ouvriers pour leur travail.
☺️
Thx
☺️
Duca checking the bilge. 2x👍
Looks like they have come around do you filming a little bit more?
Another welders are working on the boat now 😁
Do. any of those builders sail? It would be interesting to know because it would help them understand the end result.
Bom dia Roberta, Duka e um beijinho pro bebê.🥰😊😊😊
🤗
Duca what will you do to paint the boat ? will it be powder coated or some type pf coating ?
No paint😉
How wide is this boat going to be? My guess is about 14 or 15 feet (4.27m to 4.57m).
Almost. Hehehe 4.59 🥰
What about the mast. Are there special considerations for it and motor? Or am I getting too far ahead?
We talked about the mast here ruclips.net/video/AwOLNPOCV-M/видео.htmlsi=H7DfT2-RKK1yT5Hi
@@OddLifeCrafting thanks, I missed that one.
You would have thought that being a supposedly professional boat building company that they would know that the plates are going to need to be manipulated and would have a system of mounting points hard mounted into the floor of the workshop which would allow them to either hydraulically jack up or allow them to attach shackles to allow them to pull downwards. Using the equipment that was shown in the video makes them look like amateurs
👌🙌🤩 Coisa linda⛵️
🥰
Which country and where is your boat yard located?
May I know your name and address to the boat manufacturing company?
"Too loud for the baby"...?
When my wife was pregnant with our first child we saw Bon Jovi at Wembley.
With the second pregnancy it was Status Quo at Hyde Park.
Are we bad parents? 😁
One thing is a nice concert, other is to spend days and days on a loud ambient with smell of aluminium being welded. blog.binzel-abicor.com/is-aluminum-welding-toxic?hs_amp=true www.cdc.gov/niosh/reproductive-health/prevention/noise.html#:~:text=Your%20hearing%20protection%20will%20not,you%20are%20wearing%20hearing%20protection.
@@OddLifeCrafting Yeah. That's a whole other level. Fingers crossed everything works out for you all.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💕
Please make your videos longer some people look forward to see you
👍👍👍
☺️
Is the welder we see the one that did not want to be filmed initially?
It’s another one
😃😃😃
☺️
What’s the business model
Is all the tension in the hull relieved at some time?🦘🇦🇺👍
