Just listened to it yesterday, Newhart absolutely destroyed. He's got the greatest timing of any comic alive. To hear an 89 year old man just cracking up everyone in the studio was amazing.
I was the press photographer at the Oak Park tribute event. Just wanted to mention that the entire room cracked up at the mention of the ventriloquist episode. Thanks for the memory and thank you for your heartfelt tribute.
So popular is this episode that to look it up all I had to do was type in “bob newhart ven” and the rest came up automatically. It is entitled ”A Jackie Story” and originally aired 8 October 1977. The role of Danny James, the ventriloquist, was performed by Sam Kwasman. Originally a dancer in film and Broadway he went on to guest star in many well known sitcoms, including “Lou Grant,” “Family Ties,” and “Seinfeld.” He was nominated for an Emmy for this episode.
Loved this show as a kid and it is still so funny! I remember being allowed to stay up Saturday nights to watch this then Carol Burnett after. Just nostalgic, not here because of Conan, whoever that is...the barbarian?
