In this video, I’ll show you how to knit a market bag. This bag is cute and practical. It’s great for toting around groceries, gym gear, beach wear and more. It’s, lightweight, eco-friendly and a fun knit!
The market bag is knit flat and then joined in the round to create the sides and top handles. It’s a unique construction that’s incredibly satisfying when it comes together.
This bag pattern is appropriate for those who are comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, casting off and knitting in the round. This is a medium difficulty project. It’s recommended to both adventurous beginners and seasoned knitters.
Please note: The price of the PDF pattern will fluctuate with time to keep up with inflation and the average price of a cup of coffee.

I'm only a beginner, the most I've made is a few dish towels and a scarf, but the way you teach is good for EVERYONE! You're not condescending to newer knitters, but you don't rush through and make it feel like an expert pattern. Thank you for being a great teacher!

Thank you so much for this video.it is beyond excellent!
I started knitting mid July. My grandson knits and inspired me to try. From watching RUclips videos, I learned to co, knit and pearl. I made a couple of dish cloths, a scarf and knitted two in the round pumpkins, then this video popped up on RUclips.
I watched it several times. Every detail was explained so clearly and I decided to jump in.
It has been slow going, but now I can ‘see’ the stitches and after the first few repeats of rows 1-4 am well on my way.
Things I did to help as a beginning knitter:
    1. I started by clipping a stitch marker to the right side of my work. This has really helped to keep me straight as I learned the repeat.
    2. Initially, after knitting Rows 1 and 3, I would look over each stitch.
    3. I found it easy to forget to YO. Had to pay close attention.
    4. As stated in the video, I also needed to look over the stitches. Sometimes they crossed or stuck together and I would accidentally work two as one, hence decreasing the row incorrectly.
    5. Take your time!. Stop and start. Don’t stress.
Don’t give up you other newbies!! Start slowly and you will soon see the stitches and become comfortable and start to pick up a little speed.
I cannot say enough good things about this video, from her pleasantness, to her details, and to her showing where we might run into trouble (oh yes!).
The bag is beautiful and so useful. Can’t wait to make another. Having several of these is not too much and what a great gift!
If you think you can’t, you can!! Go for it.
I might even call myself a knitter now.
Thank you, thank you for this excellent video.

I was having a really rough day and seeing this immediately brightened it a bit! My grandmother always had a market bag with her which she'd apparently had for over 20 years since buying it in france. Every time i'd go grocery shopping with her she'd pull it out. Now I can make myself one🥰

The comment where you said "why am I singing, this is not a musical" got me! I do the same thing all the time. For some reason singing things helps my memory better than plain talking to myself

I am new as well. I have been knitting on various looms, but I had never tried to use knitting needles. That is until I recently joined a yarn-lovers group at my local library and the ladies there gently challenged me to at least try using knitting needles. One of them even blessed me with a homemade leather pouch with pockets filled with various sizes and types of needles. She also gave me another one with crochet needles. Sooo...I was touched by their kindness and decided the least I could do is give it a whirl. Thankfully, I came across your channel because you make learning how to knit a lot less intimidating. 🙂I now know how to cast-on and do knit and purl stitches. Not sure if I'm skilled enough yet to make this lovely bag, but I will definitely save the pattern for future use. Thank you!

@@sheepandstitch I think i may try it with the smallest macrame cord for sturdiness. I have made bags before and with similar sticking and they do stretch more than you want if you aren't utilizing it has a shopping bag etc. Hopefully I can update you on how it comes out

Oh my gosh, I just finished this and it turned out great. I'm a very experienced knitter, but I did have some problems, mostly because it's hard to figure out your mistakes with a lace pattern. You know you've screwed up somewhere, but it's difficult to look at the row and figure out where! Anyway, I did persevere, and it's perfect. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern

I did it! After months of starting over and over again I kept going and made it through to the finished bag. I LOVE it! Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher, I adore your videos! I learned soooo much knitting this bag. I'm kind of sad that I'm done. I think I'll knit another : ) Thank You!!

I am new to knitting but had little problem following your instructions as they are soooo clear! I have knitted a white market bag for my daughter for her beach holiday and she loves it! So do a whole bunch of my knitting friends who have all been knitting your bag. Why have you not been posting up more patterns lately…? 😢

I really like knitting this bag. I've made a bunch in different sizes for the different kind of shopping i do. Love it so much better than the standard reusable bags. (No plastic bags in Canada anymore.) My favorite yarn is coboo from walmart (bamboo/cotton and cheap!) I would recommend the handles bind off looser, I like Grandmas favorite bind off (on youtube) I find the regular bind off has a hard seam that is kind of painful if there's heavy stuff in the bag. Thanks for this! I'm giving them out as christmas presents this year i think.

I am so surprised and excited that you live in Hong Kong that I don't even know what to say. It's not often that my interests intersect, but I'm a long-time (casual) knitter, *and* I lived in Taiwan for five years. I don't know how similar the two places *actually* are, but it's great to see a place that reminds me of my other home. 😍

i'm half way through the body part and i'm so excited! Please tell me what's the purpose of skipping a bump when u pick up stitches somewhere along the side? will it be more even spaced if we just do every bump? thank you in advance for your advice🙏🙏🌷

Thank you for this tutorial!! Brilliant pattern, loved the picking up and casting on to make the straps 🤩 just finished making this for my friend's birthday! The only thing I couldn't understand: why to finish the body having worked rows 1 or 3??? Then the ugly purls of the decrease row will show on the right side? 😬😬 I ended up finishing having worked row 2 or 4 and then decreased on the right side :)

Thank you so much for all your tutorials! I'm a beginner and you are my "go to" on everything. Your slow step by step and repeating, and encouraging, are awesome. Do you not have to "block" this when it's done? guess I don't know when blocking is important or not

Ever since I was a beginner knitter, I watched Sheep&Stitch. I've literally grown to do sweaters, boots and gloves here. You're awesome and good at explaining the stitches. Too good, honestly. Love the bag, but don't have circular needles. Can I do it straight and seam up later?

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch  Год назад +1

Thank you so much for your kind words. You made my day! As for the bag, when picking up stitches to knit the handle you’ll need a circular needle. I can’t think of a good way to do it with straight needles unfortunately

To do the initial increases (M1-P), try using your left needle to grab the strand of yarn between the two stitches and place it in the correct orientation onto the left needle. I found this to be easier than using my right needle to perform this increase.
