  • Panasonic 3DO review. Classic Game Room reviews the PANASONIC 3DO video game console model FZ-1 released in 1993. The Panasonic 3DO has an awesome library of video games like Road Rash, Myst and Novastorm but unfortunately was released with a $700 price tag in the early 90's, yikes! Failure in the marketplace followed but the awesome games still arrived on the Panasonic 3DO. Panasonic 3DO video review features Panasonic 3DO model FZ-1 (as well as comparison shot vs. model FZ-10). Prone to breakage and difficult to repair, the Panasonic 3DO is for serious collectors looking to relive the early 90's in style with some awesome games.

I got so lucky with this, I recently picked up an FZ-1 (minus controller) for 8 dollars at a thrift store. My guess would be that they thought it was a CD player or something, and so it was priced waaaaaaaay under its actual value.
I bought a controller for 10 bucks off ebay, and when I turned on the console, it had a copy of V.R. Stalker in the tray! The system works, and so does the game, so all told, I started my 3DO collection for under 20 bucks!

The difference between the Panasonic and Goldstar was noticed when you open and close the draws. The goldstar open and closed a lot faster and booted up the game faster. The Panasonic 3DOs draw moves like it was too chilled out.
My 3DO I own was the 3DO I brought from Day one. For its time it was a great machine as I moved over from mega CD, and the video scenes were greatly improved, people should not compare it to any modern consoles, because this machine was the best at its time.
My favourite games are, twisted Gameshow, Road Rash, Horde, Demolition Man, Myst, Theme park, space hulk, and many more.

I never owned one of the actual consoles, but I did pickup a 3DO Blaster back in the day. It was a more affordable alternative for PC gamers. I was convinced at the time that all future video game consoles would have add-on boards for PC gamers; boy was I wrong ;)
Times have changed though, now if you want to pick up a 3DO Blaster because of its rarity, it is more expensive than a used 3DO :P

I remember playing the 3DO (Road Rash of course!) when I contributed to Hyper magazine back in the 90's. That thing was simply amazing for the time with crystal clear cut scenes and complete film clips for the songs featured on the game. Something game companies should consider doing today!

I recall watching this review a few years back. Anyway, I think the 3DO was way ahead of its time. It had so much potential, but the industry was just not ready for it. Also the initial price drove buyers away. However, prices did go down tremendously in 1994. It's a shame it was considered a failure though.

Mostly due to the way it was advertised and marketed, they called the Genesis and super Nintendo, 2 of the best consoles of all time, baby toys, and the cost was wayyyy out there for most gamers, so they thought, where keeping our toys, thank you and to be 100% honest I kinda Aggree. This system was WAY ahead of its time. Things like build in memory for games saves was on the 3DO and only recently is this on current consoles. The one thing I LOVED about the 3DO and wished current companys would do is the headphone jak in the controller. You could play your games as loud as you wanted to, no matter how late it was, and with the headset plugged in you wouldn't keep anyone up. I must have been really REALLY lucky to find my FIRST, used, and working 3DO at a Goodwill store.

Sadly I see myself doing the same thing with the PS2, PS1 and Xbox 360 in the nearer future due to lack of backwards compatibility from the new consoles.

Mark, you should find the game "Icebreaker" for the 3DO. It was also released on the PC, but was originally released on the 3DO. It was one of my favorite games growing up.

I got one of these things for free and it works. Got it out of an old storage building my parents are going through and I was really surprised to find such a thing, especially since it's an old woman's stuff.

I played my 3DO for years and never had an issue. The headphone jack in the controller was a great idea. Only downside was the loading time... it was insanely long

I'm actually impressed with this console. The disc tray doesn't seem like something that would be on a system that old, along with the headphone jack in the controller, and the fact that you only need to plug a second controller into the player 1 controller for multiplayer is a great idea! Just wish I could have seen some gameplay though.

I have this model now but when I was young in the early 90s this thing was like a myth. Everyone knew about it but no one had ever seen it. Mosly due to the crazy price!

I knew this console here in Brazil in 1994, I had 10 years old, I see a 3d shooter game but I don't remember his name... I can't play in this console, but I see many videos about that here in the Classic Game Room. Thanks for that!

They have a working 3DO at the gamer's grotto in Bennington, VT. its only $65.00 and they have some games sold separately. I almost picked it up yesterday with all the games they had. If only I did, I would be a very happy man.

I got mine from a mom/pop game store for $10. It was sold as is, and didn't load any games. Since I can repair almost anything, I opened it up and fixed the problem. I noticed that just about every FZ-1 that didn't work, had the same problem.

Don't forget, 3DO was a Console Platform standard that anyone could build for, not just Panasonic. I have a Goldstar 3DO, which still works. Sanyo also made one in Asia. However, Panasonic made the best quality 3DOs.
