      Even his early videos aren't exactly "lazy", as there's a fair amount of various footage, decent coverage of the various elements of each game etc. but his later videos are anything but lazy, which is why I always found the channel name amusing. He's also one of the very few RUclipsrs who seems level-headed and objective without an over-reliance on some over-the-top or fake "personality" to gain views.

    Have to say, the 3DO had two great things lacking on pretty much every other consoles in history: an S-video port and a headphone jack on the controller. That was just brilliant.

      @SPeacockYeah, S-Video seemed to be an NTSC thing
      Same with YPbPr, apparently, with the PAL GameCube and Xbox having all their high-resolution options disabled. Ironically then, the PS2 ended up with the most progressive-scan games in PAL regions.

They wouldn't have gone on to make Crash Bandicoot, which means they wouldn't have become a 2nd party developer for Sony and we wouldn't have gotten Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, or The Last of Us. LGR, I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I'm so excited I gotta tell you! I got so lucky with my Panasonic 3DO FZ-1!
    I was at a thrift store and it was sitting amongst a bunch of CD players without a controller (I'm pretty sure the Panasonic logo threw them off- they probably just thought it was a CD player!), and bought it for 8 dollars! I already had extra video cords at home, and the only thing I had to buy in order to complete the console was a controller, which I was able to snag off of Amazon for about 10 bucks. And the best part? There was a copy of VR Stalker already in the drive.
    Long story short, I have a working 3DO and I'm playing VR Stalker on it, and all told I spent less than 20 bucks!

    I remember looking at the 3DO back around 1994 or 95 with a friend when we were at a used game store. They were selling it for I recall $399 for the system used. He played some Mortal Kombat clone on it and while it looked good, it didn't look near $400 good.
    I do own one now, but that's primarily because I found it for a little over $10 at my local thrift store. And I do have some pretty good games for it, like Quarantine, Samurai Shodown, Wing Commander 3 and more I got on the cheap.
    After 20 years it still holds up. The FZ-1 is certainly good quality console-wise.

I remember having a blast with that party game when I was a kid. The Soviet-themed commercials between segments are awesome! And if you like camp, you will also have a blast with the 3DO. Sometimes just laughing with friends at some of the crap that also was on the system was more fun than playing a good game together, and since you can burn all those old, crap games, why not?!

    I love the 3DO so much, I have two. One NA model and one JP Model, just because one game isn't compatible with the US one! One interesting thing, the best version of Out of this world, Road Rash and Need for speed were released on thw 3DO. I own every versions of theses games, even the late aniversary HD edition of Another World(Out of this world) and they are not better(beside higher resolution). The latter HD version of Out of this world is even missing sound effects!! Sound is better on the 3DO than the Playstation.

    • @dave4shmups
      @dave4shmups 9 лет назад +5

      Domspun Yeah, something that a lot of people don't think about is the fact that games that were originally released for the 3DO that got ported to the PS1 run and look better on the 3DO. A good example is Shockwave. The PS1 release doesn't even have a blue sky in the first level, just a black background without even any stars. Road Rash on the 3DO has a better draw distance then the PS1 release, and Gex looks better on the 3DO. I personally think that the PS1 is a better console overall, but again, PS1 ports of 3DO games tend to be inferior to the 3DO originals. And as far as memory management goes, you don't need the disc mentioned in this video-the 3DO will tell you when the memory is full when you try to save one too many games. Then it will let you manage the memory.

    • @atranfanatic
      @atranfanatic 9 лет назад +2

      +David Halligan Yep. Better graphics, and color. And I love the PS1, and PS2. But the 3DO is in a class by itself with some great titles. And managing game save memory is no issue at all for me.

    At age 21, I was one of the idiots that saved and shelled out the $599 (and that was a sale price) for a new FZ-1. It WAS better than anything out there when it was brand new, but it wasn't THAT much better. I enjoyed Total Eclipse...and any sci-fi fan that doesn't love Star Control II: The UrQuan Masters is not a sci-fi fan. Super Street Fighter II was an unresponsive joke. Samurai Showdown was actually a decent port. The Horde was memorable, but ultimately stupid. Wing Commander III was amazing, but the 2nd disc was screwed up so I didn't get to finish it. Overall, a good system, but wasn't worth the price. I ended up selling it and all the games to a friend two years later for $150.

    I didn't care about the 3DO in the past, because it was considered a bad console and associate with full motion video interactive games which I don't like. But after seen some good presentations, it raised my interest. There were a lot of hidden gems. Also, games I know on PC, but with improved CD audio music. I have never seen such improved Another World port at the time. Wow, it almost looks and sounds like the HD remake on Steam. The music in Doom is the best imho, although the game was terribly slow. Bad luck because they were gonna make a good version, but the development went into hell for two years, so they scrapped and did a fast port (yes it's the software rendered from PC running on the petty 12.5Mhz ARM). Need for Speed was great. Hidden gems that I didn't knew like Killing Time (that atmosphere/music, also nonlinear and huge map like a Castlevania, realtime videos of ghosts and more. Although too slow), Slayer (D&D 3d dungeon crawler I am gonna just start playing) and more. But they suffer from something. The videos I have seen on youtube are smooth. But on real machine it's much slower, almost unplayable.
    It's a pitty. I tried, the 3do emulators. Yes,. the CPU is the culprit. While ARM was a quite good CPU, 12.5Mhz weren't enough. Just overclock on emulator at 20 or 25 and things start to get much smoother. If they could have added a 25mhz ARM, costs allowed or something, things would be different. All those hidden gem look great on youtube probably because they overclock the emul, but on real machine they are so slow they get unplayable. It's a pitty because I like there was some life in the machine, it wasn't just the FMV interactive crap people think it is. The machine had a 3d GPU similar to Saturn and maybe better (quad rasterizer, now with alpha blending and gouruad shading which I think the Saturn was missing) but it needed a better CPU to calculate 3d transformations and what polygons to send and all that. Also, the Doom port on Saturn suffered from the same, hasted port of software renderer from PC, but of course because of higher speed CPU it was not as slow. Only on PS1 they really utilized the hardware to make a great version.
    Anyway, good review. At least, I still enjoy a great version of Super Street Fighter 2 (dat music, SF classic but remastered!) and explore the few 2d or 3d games that can still be playable.

      @CommandLineCowboy 7 лет назад

      Got to wonder if the ARM CPU is really the culprit you say. I assume the custom floating point unit would be heavily involved in the calculation of the 3D geometry. The ARM 60 had no native floating point nor even a divide instruction, the '386 that were common at the time neither has floating point. The memory bus was the same speed as the processor so there shouldn't be a need for a cache, the video memory is separate VRAM so that won't steal cycles from the processor. A 12.5 Mhz ARM 60 should be around 10 MIP performance, close to the new 486DX that gave 11 MIPs at 33 MHZ and probably cost more than the 3DO. Don't suppose emulators allow speeding up the floating point but leaving the ARM at 12.5 Mhz? That would prove if the ARM was the bottleneck.
      The 3DO was a very important for ARM, it was the first consumer product that didn't come from ARM's founders Acorn and Apple computers. I had Acorn's Achimedes computer at the time and was hoping lots of games would get an ARM port and make their way to the Archimedes by way of the 3DO. Star Fighter started as an Archimedes game then got ported to the 3DO.

    I used to drive down to a best buy store which was about 25 miles from here, skipping over 2 other best buy stores, just to stand around and play their Panasonic 3D0 system. I would stand there for hours playing it. The sales ppl would come up to me every 20 mins and I would just play it off like I am thinking of buying it and kept playing it. Back in 1994 that was pretty cool to play, and I am not sure if there were demo discs for 3Do but that best buy put actual games into it for demo, and they swapped them out every week or so. In 1994, this had very good gfx

    Video Necro here on a 6 year old post... But your review brought back great memories... I bought my 3DO for full price back in the day.. The best games had to be Shockwave and Crash and Burn. Shockwave had GREAT video for its day and really created an excellent story (you can pull up youtube videos of gameplay). Crash and Burn was a very fun combination of racing and combat with guns and missiles on your car that I loved (I would drive the course backwards to catch people and kill all my opponents). Of the games you listed the Samurai Showdown was an excellent port. But as you said there were some horrific games as well "Microcasm"? and the "Demolition Man" come to mind as absolute turds.

I use the RCA jacks to hook to my flat screen TV. I think it is a great console, just had too much competition. I have a handful of games for it. And looking to get more, as there are some great titles for it.

    Star Control 2 for the 3DO is one of the best games I've played. I know they have it for the PC as well, and it's good, but the voice acting, cinematic's, and music they added in the 3DO version made it worth the money. I bought my 3DO for $400 back in the day. The music in Road Rash is great, listen to the band Paw and Hammerbox in it, that's some underrated music right there. I thought Gex was way more entertaining than Crash Bandicoot. Great review like usual LGR.
