I bought a cdi back in the 90's just so I could play dragons lair 2. It was cheaper than buying the arcade cabinet. Then I fell in love with space ace, dragons lair 1, kingdom 1 and 2, burn cycle, and zeldas adventure. I loved cdi for all its quirks and I still have it today, although I don't play it anymore.
Best console review ever! Awesome intro. Been looking into getting a CD-i for years. I picked up The Apprentice and Hotel Mario at Goodwill for 99 cents a piece. I believe Mario is sealed, it's in storage as I wouldn't display that bs.
you want to know something crazy and prepare to call me an idiot. I actually thought that the cutscenes from Hotel Mario were just animations people drew up in Microsoft Paint, and was voiced silly, and was fake. I thought that was all on purpose. Then I found out they were from Hotel Mario, a real game, and I facepalmed for a very long time, not just at myself, but at the poor business decision's Phillip's made.
Speaking of rich people I found this advertisement for the first model of the Philip CD-I and its very persuasive. So I copied it to give everyone a chance to see what made the CD-I so alluring. 1991 advertisement: Hello there! May I ask you some questions? Terrific! Are you bored with life? Are you tired of having to much money? Do you think you can top that bad decision you made when you bought that Philippino hooker that gave you AIDS? If the answer is yes then you are on your way of being a proud owner of a Philip CD-I! There is something in it for the entire family. It can keep the misses occupied with a poor selection of movies while you go out for more hookers, haha priceless. Have kids? Let them play the Philip CD-I edition of zelda and they will never want to play another game again! Now, you are probably saying what's in it for me? Besides looking like a completely dumb asshole you will be seen by your peers as a someone who uses money to compensate for a small dick! So friend take that .45 out your mouth and pick up the phone to order a CD-I today. Call in the next ten minutes and you will receive coupons for douche kits at your local store. Don't forget to call today!!!
Jo Mark komme auch aus Bremen! Ohne dich würde dieses Review nicht stattfinden. Danke, dass du CGR ständig mit (öfters seltenen) Spielen und Hardware versorgst. =D
It's one of my favorite consoles. Have 4 different models and all the controllers available for it. Great thing (and not so great) you can use whatever controller you like to play any game you want. It's also the reason why controles aren't that responsive, because every input method is different. I have about 87 games for it and really like games like: burn:cycle, lucky luke, secret mission, the apprentice, hotel mario, 7th guest, mutant rampage bodyslam. If you give the system a change and look at it in the perspective when it came out, it is impressive what the machine could do.
Who found that CDs with "CD+G" printed on the inside ring would play imagery while playing the disc in the CD-i???? I believe Jimi Hendricks Are You Experienced Album had this... I remember watching it...
Yeah, there were quite a few CD' s which had the +G info, but didn't even make mention of it. The Jimi Hendrix Smash Hits CD was neat. CD music and NES quality graphics was an interesting mix hehe. I bought a few more CD+G discs that I could find; Fleetwood Mac's Behind the Mask, and Information Society come to mind. Also, the "Rock Paintings" disc that came with the Sega-CD was also CD+G and worked in the CD-i.
I remember picking a CD-i about nine years back for a dollar at a big garage sale and used it to play CDs on my TV because it had the best speakers in my house at the time.
oh, okay, so someone from Bremen sent it. Well, it was a shock to hear the German Zelda CD-i voices (and it doesn't match with the RUclips Poop sounds xD) but at least he threw the whole console out of Europe. That's one problem less for us ;)
I've probably said this before but this small intro monologue drives me crazy. It's like reading a text without commas, it sounds weird. But then again, that's part of this channel's charm :D
This is the first time I've seen a CDI in action, Strange but cool console :) I love how the early 90's had a flood of competitors in the gaming market. Crazy to think Nintendo where releasing games on other consoles during the same time there own console was out.
Ah, the "Imagination Machine". Looking forward to your game reviews, especially for the Nintendo-licensed (since Ninty themselves didn't make them) games!
On CDs in the 90s - I didn't get my first device that could play CDs 'til i got a PS1 in 1998 and i didn't get a radio with a CD player 'til 1999 :) . When i bought my first car, a 2000 Focus in 2005, it still had a tape player in it, thankfully the garage i bought it from swapped out the tape player for a CD player as part of the sale, but i still had to ask them to do it :) .
Mark is lucky he has a smaller CD-i that worked, I feel sorry for the AVGN "James Rolfe" having to use a bigger model for his review. Even though the CD-i sucks.
I’m up late at night watching 1990’s video game videos. I’ve watched: #1. The history of 3DO #2 Why Saturn failed #3 a play through of SHINOBI X #4. A review of PS classic #5. A review of NES classic #6. A review of SNES classic #7. A review of TG16 classic #8. WHY DREAMCAST FAILED #9 CDi
there a huge department store in the mall in the city here, had the CD-i and I remember wanting it, but over the time I seen the price drop and then I had seen it in a discount bin for $40
I'm a bit tired of reviewers picking apart the CD-i for comical purposes. It's been done over and over again. The CD-i was never intended to be billed as a "game console". It's a format. It's basically CDRom for your TV. Back in 1990 a PC CDROM and additional card to run it was $900 and the CDi did many things.. 1. It played music CD's (and was one of the best quality players l) 2. Video CD (White Book) the precursor to DVD. Many movies were released in this format. 3. Kodak Photo-CD (digital photos on your TV) 4. Reference material archives (Being able to access a full fledged encyclopedia with audio and video archives was a brand new concept). 5. and of course games...
Born to Die I don't think the CD-i is that bad of a device (I hate it when people call it a game console), either. Honestly, it was a really great educational tool, and it does have some pretty cool interactive programs. Sure, a lot of the games were pretty bad, but there were even some pretty decent games like Lemmings, Secret Mission, Kingdom: The Far Reaches, etc.
thepirategamerboy12 i can imagine back then one kid owning a cd-i calling his friends to come over and play interactive educational software with him and them just hanging up.
thepirategamerboy12 Exactly. The CD-i is just a format. The games part of it was probably the weakest part unfortunately. That being said, it did have some really impressive stuff for it's time.
it's easy to make fun of the cd-i now but when it came out people were playing stamp sized video on their PCs and kids with 8 or 16 bit consoles were drooling over games like Chaos Control, Burn Cycle, Dragon's Lair or Escape from Cybercity. It played audio cd, video cd and karaoke. It had adult titles and hundreds of professional, multimedia and educational titles. Multimedia at the time was new and the cd-i looked very impressive
Now, I'm really hoping for a CGR review of the CD32 or the CDTV! You've just got to review Microcosm on the CD32!! I think Link's animations are actually less [painful in German than in English, now all we need is someone to make a Downfall-like meme out of it. Lemmings is good on any format, and apparently Hotel Mario wasn't too bad.
90s technology is so incredible and unmatched in history. Behold the splendor and wonder of the magical inventions at 2:25. I'm pretty sure if one possessed EVERYTHING pictured there, one would have the power to control the world, and probably time and space as well. Which is why all of those electronic devices had to be spread out and hidden across the world lest they fall into the wrong hands.
I always love looking at these kind of consoles. I wonder if the people at these companies like phillips,Panasonic, etc. would really think there system could survive in the market. But then again, this was back when you had choices 3 is not enough.
The CD-I does have some excellent games for it, but the console itself (regardless of which model you choose) is extremely expensive. And the only controller, other then the mouse, worth buying for it, is a 3-button Genesis style controller which can go for several hundred dollars on ebay. Ebay is pretty much the only place you're going to find a CD-I, and games and controllers for it.
The only thing I really remember about the CD-I was a bizarre informercial for it. It involved some dude getting in an elevator....a super fast express elevator that brought him down to "The Wall." Some sort of sentient Jumbo-Tron that convinced this guy to buy a CD-I or something.
I own 2 CD-i consoles and a bunch of software for it so I am really looking forward to cdi week! If you can check out the 7th guest, it's an excellent port. ;)
I stumbled upon a Phillips exhibit at the Science Museum in Leiden, Netherlands, while on a business-trip. The descriptor of the CD-i read something like "Phillips attempted to pioneer cd-interactive technology for education, movies and video games. As it could not compete with Nintendo and Sega, the Phillips CD-i was not successful."
Mayo Chan No, but it's the Joke to get him the top comment... BTW: I live in Germany and there are far less nazis over here, than in Spain! ;) Just pointing there, because I'm also a Spanish guy... :D
I have one in the loft with a fair few games, I have both the Zelda games released on it, as far as I can remember Nintendo didn't make those games but were made through some kind of license deal.
Oh Phillip CD-I, we come so far as to stream music, videos and play games online. May we give it a fond farewell and send it back to the old console home.
My bro in law had one. It wasn't THAT bad. Yes the remote control style controller was bad, yes the Zelda games were bad... but it had some unique things that were very cool at the time. It was the first way our family ever looked at digitized pictures, which was mindblowing all by itself.
-The audio quality should be good, The CD-i video and later VCD (that is very similar but not exactly the same) use standard Bitrate CD to view video with sound. So how to fit the video. The compressed the audio 1:8 with sound compression, what is now known of as MP3. Yes, that where MP3 is from, this is basically the first mp3:s. (Its acutely short for MPEG-1 layer 3, the 3:d layer is the sound) Then there was 7/8 of space for video that was adequate for 352:288 with mpeg-1 compression, that is a JPEG compression where several tricks is used to make it use less data in scenes where there is less motion. Later SVCD uses higher resolution, but with double the bit rate, fitting only 40 minutes (with mandatory overburning) of video on a disc (in contrast to 72)
Link in German is hilarious!!! XD
They translated "faces" to "Fratzen", which is a word that's usually used to describe an ugly face...
MEIN JUNGE!
Boomer humor
I actually had one of these growing up. It was well ahead of its time and deserves respect, regardless of its commercial failure.
I fucked Sailor Moon first
Want to sell it?
"Obsolete overpriced junk is the best". YES!!
Best console review ever! Awesome intro. Been looking into getting a CD-i for years. I picked up The Apprentice and Hotel Mario at Goodwill for 99 cents a piece. I believe Mario is sealed, it's in storage as I wouldn't display that bs.
Philips lost 1 billion dollars for developing CD-i.
Ah the games that spawned almost every youtube poop ever made. Those graphics are almost as good as PS4 and Xbox One.
This is the first time I've seen the opening to hotel Mario unedited. Truly revolutionary.
Lol I love the RUclips poop
you want to know something crazy and prepare to call me an idiot.
***** I thought it was a TV show the first time XD
also it's backwards compatible
As soon as he put in Hotel Mario, classic youtube poop was coming to me all over again. Aaah.... those were the days.
This was such a rich people thing back in the day XD I remember the reviews in the magazines from back then.
Speaking of rich people I found this advertisement for the first model of the Philip CD-I and its very persuasive. Philips cd-i was originally not supposed to be a video game console at all.
That explains most of the shit
No matter the port, you can't mess up the Lemmings.
Norlight Lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings for the Game Boy Color
In honor of this review I watched it in 144p. ....never again.
Did you at least make it to the bonfire?
FoolyCooly214 praise the sun!
This is one of the funniest reviews from you in a while..lol...Love the commentary in this 1, Mark..
I have the MAGNOVOX version of this with the FMV cartridge required for some titles.
Ah, the "Philips CD-i." Such history when this was released, another great review Mark! :)
Jo Mark komme auch aus Bremen!

"My phone does that now" is a perfect summary
I hope your phone does a whole lot more.
but it will never have the superior picture quality, since it has no Laser Disc support.
"Which button adds more hair spray" That line killed me lol :D
Please make a video using the Phillips CD-i complete home movie studio!
Thank you for reviewing this Mark! You are awesome. I've been dying to hear your opinion the CD-i. Very satisfied. :D
The philips cdi was way ahead of its time… Nice video man
1:20 What is this song???

I wanted one of those when i was kid, because of the video scenes, seeing real people in gaming was new, even if it was a cut scene.
At the end of the video, that announcer dude kinda sounds like Clank!
I remember picking a CD-i about nine years back for a dollar at a big garage sale and used it to play CDs on my TV because it had the best speakers in my house at the time.

how 'eXcuuse me princess' sound in german?
"Ich tuuuu mein bestes, Prinzessin!" ~ I'm dooooing my best princess!
there a huge department store in the mall in the city here, had the CD-i and I remember wanting it, but over the time I seen the price drop and then I had seen it in a discount bin for $40
You're missing Burn-Cycle. It was THE CDi tech demo piece around launch. Also "Escape from Cyber-City".
1:45 Why does the DC-in look like a network/phone port?
The music at the beginning of this was actually Phantom of the Opera... A broadway play...
Still hoping they release a 4K Philips CD-I, I would preorder this
I'm a bit tired of reviewers picking apart the CD-i for comical purposes. It's been done over and over again.

Born to Die I'm not a fanboy of any system per say. I stick up for all of them when people don't give them a fair shake.
thepirategamerboy12 Exactly.
The CD-i is just a format. The games part of it was probably the weakest part unfortunately. That being said, it did have some really impressive stuff for it's time.
Whatever happened to the CD-i week videos?
3:27
720p @ 50hz??
...Is this the first instance of "HD"? or is that just your tv/recording source upscaling it?
it's easy to make fun of the cd-i now but when it came out people were playing stamp sized video on their PCs and kids with 8 or 16 bit consoles were drooling over games like Chaos Control, Burn Cycle, Dragon's Lair or Escape from Cybercity. My favorite thing about the CD-i: Phil Hartman did the commercials for them.
I had one when I was a kid. It was good for a kid to learn on
Lord Karnage...you're the freaking MAN, sir!
I used to love playing Hotel Mario when I was a kid. It was fun!
Exactly the video I was looking for. Just installed mess on classic Xbox and have every cdi game on it
I always love looking at these kind of consoles. I wonder if the people at these companies like phillips,Panasonic, etc. would really think there system could survive in the market. But then again, this was back when you had choices 3 is not enough.
The only way this could be more 90s is if it wore Reebok Pumps.
Still playing mine
The CD-I does have some excellent games for it, but the console itself (regardless of which model you choose) is extremely expensive. And the only controller, other then the mouse, worth buying for it, is a 3-button Genesis style controller which can go for several hundred dollars on ebay. This console is awesome! Only with this console you can see the King in all his glory!
using laptop for Tina disc, wouldn't work on the console?
I've never seen faces of evil in German before. That was too funny.
THIS SYSTEM LOOKS AMAZING! WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
a nearby dumpster
Your Mind XD
Check your toilet.i found one in my toilet
Aaron Steven XD
I think they have them in Hell. You might wanna check there. I think it's in the tenth circle.
Measure the length of the giant CD-i like you did with the Atari 5200!
Loved The 7th Guest on CDI. :)
The only thing I really remember about the CD-I was a bizarre informercial for it. It involved some dude getting in an elevator....a super fast express elevator that brought him down to "The Wall." Some sort of sentient Jumbo-Tron that convinced this guy to buy a CD-I or something.
why does it have black? mine is all grey
I had a cdi as a kid and even owned the tv shown at 8:24.
In the netherlands philips is EVERYWHERE!
I still want a Philips cdi.....
Actually the model that Mark is reviewing was the cost cutting version which debuted at $299. It wasn't expensive
Why did you have a foreign copy of Link faces of evil
I had a CD-I it was a great idea! but I mainly used it for CDs and movies when i was like 7 haha
Philips CD-I released two of my childhood CD-Rom games Sesame Street Numbers and Sesame Street Letters, which that I didn't know.
My dad said he had one at one point. I have no idea why he'd do that in the first place, but at least he said he sold it.
+ProfessorAvocado 12 its bad he sold it you could have tried that piece of garbage out!
I need to make some popcorn and watch the reviews of this trainwreck of a system. Kudos to Mark for suffering through the upcoming reviews!
Got one for 80 dollars at a flea market. It's a very perplexing piece of technology.
Wait I'm in the year 2015...What's Tina Turner Rio '88 and why did it look like a really big deal?
For those who love classic consoles with lots of FMV, educational, and really original and weird games, CD-I's worth your time.
I always wonder why Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and other huge games in the early 90s never got ported to the cd-i!!! what was philips doing
They probably didn't want to put em on this
where can i get a cd-i with mario and zelda with them?
+hyperzombieDoesMinecraft Well, you could find them anywhere in theory. But most likely on ebay.
ok thanks
Think of it this way Mark the CDI is like the Power Glove "It's So Bad".
My only idea of philips company is SHAVING
"it's the future from the nineties, and you really don't want one"
sums it up pretty well I think.
I own 2 CD-i consoles and a bunch of software for it so I am really looking forward to cdi week!
If you can check out the 7th guest, it's an excellent port. ;)
There's a pretty cool port of MS. PAC-MAN for the CD-i, based on the SNES/Genesis/NES Tengen versions.
with no pause button?
I stumbled upon a Phillips exhibit at the Science Museum in Leiden, Netherlands, while on a business-trip. Is Link trying to get Zelda to join him in the nazi empire? I'm gonna assume so.
oh god, you've watched too much history channel
Seriously? Is that the best joke you could come up with?
Mayo Chan Nazi confirmed.
Truly Nuclear not even watch the english dubbed cutscene
Mayo Chan
No, but it's the Joke to get him the top comment...
BTW: I live in Germany and there are far less nazis over here, than in Spain! ;) Just pointing there, because I'm also a Spanish guy... :D
this was so ahead of its time
So, was CD-I first Compact Disc videogame consoli? 1991
"Check out this tennis game, which reminds me of MORTAL COMBAT." All the reason I need to own this system.
This makes my Panasonic 3DO look good!!! The Philips CD-i looks cool!! I Love reject tech 32X,Atari Jaguar,3DO, Virtual Boy and Sega CD.
My bro in law had one. It wasn't THAT bad. Yes the remote control style controller was bad, yes the Zelda games were bad... but it had some unique things that were very cool at the time. It was the first way our family ever looked at digitized pictures, which was mindblowing all by itself.
