  • Classic Game Room HD reviews the NEC Turbografx-16 video game console (also known as the PC-Engine in Japan, although there are differences). Released in 1989 in the U.S. the Turbografx-16 has a number of exclusive titles like Blazing Lazers and Bonk's Adventure, many of which are now available for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.

    Rewatching this many years later for fun. Nothing like original Classic Room. What a throwback to the good ole days.

    Awesome system! Had one of these when I was growing up, but didn't have many games for it and it unfortunately died. Found one again for $250 with 18 games plus 5 I purchased afterwards, lots of awesome games I had missed out on this system. TurboGrafx 16 RULES!

    You can tell how old this video is because he said the Turbografx-16 is "affordable". Hahahahahaha! Not anymore!

    • @DennisForstner
      @DennisForstner 8 лет назад +6

      Best just to import a PC Engine, it's substantially cheaper and the games are as well

    • @TheRetroRenegade
      @TheRetroRenegade 8 лет назад +7

      +Dennis Forstner I'm not sure if the PC Engine is even that much more affordable these days. I mean, they do cost less overall on ebay, but the more people want to collect for the Turbografx 16, the more people will be drawn to the PC Engine to save money and then the prices will go up. Why didn't I get a Turbografx like three years ago?

      Meh, depends where you go. I purchased my TG-16 yesterday at a local game store for $90.

      Now go and fine games for cheap money. Not gonna happen. Keith courage Alpha Zone use to be 5 or 6 bucks years a go. today now closer or above $20, And it was the game sold with the system.

    What's really mind blowing is that the PC-Engine was INSANELY popular in Japan, but only had a miniscule following in the United States where the Sega Genesis dominated for the better half of the 90's. Like with the Master System, if more third parties had been invested in developing software for it, the playing ground could have been completely level I assure you

    This is def a rare console
    I have never come across any games nor consoles in my 5 year game chasing in Florida in the wild , I've seen one console in one store and I purchased it today in the original box for $115 , doesn't have the back piece nor Keith courage but works fine and is in nice shape , glad to get this , I only want splatterhouse, bonks adventure , bonks revenge , space harrier and some Shooters like blazing Lazers, $115 might sound like A lot to some people but I have wanted this for a while and never find this console and when it was boxed I knew I had to have it

      Crazycarls adventures I live in Florida and had the same problem I worked with a guy who barters and he was trying to sell me old consoles he brought me everything I had already and I told him not interested if it’s now a turbo graft 16 I don’t need it he said he thought he had one and I called bullshit because no one just has one around their house without knowing for sure but man I was wrong bought it off him for a hundred

      Retrosys No kidding. I stupidly sold mine back in 99, for next to nothing. I decided to look into getting one last week, and I was shocked at what they are selling for.

    • @ronsmith4325
      @ronsmith4325 8 лет назад +3

      +Retrosys Dont look online - everything is overpriced. If you have a local used games store, you might be in luck. I recently picked up NES, SNES and PS2 consoles for 100 total. Games were in the 1-3 dollar range and most came with their original packaging and manuals... If you are trying to buy on ebay, you are going to get screwed. TurboGrafx I'd expect would be a little bit more expensive since it's not as common as the ones I mentioned, but still.. the guys trying to sell classic consoles for $300-400 just because they can are out to lunch.

    • @Lilbroda
      @Lilbroda 8 лет назад +3

      For what I understand, the TG16 PAL version is just an US TG version modified to run on pal countries .. it runs all US library (there is no PAL turbografx library anyways) it has the cd ad output, so I thinhk it will work just fine with the US CD addon

Now I have desk top with emulators to relive the experience. Great console brings back allot of gaming memories!

    In response to the no RCA video and sound. Yes one could have it as i bought one and still have it. Was called the Turbo Booster. was a plug in for the back and gave one a yellow red and white rca style connection. was a nice improvement in sound and video. plus to those who thought it was a 8 bit , no it was TWO 8 bit processors hence 16. Still as always dud your videos are awesome. !!

    I remember when everyone was deciding to upgrade from the NES to either Genesis or TG-16. I chose the Genny the Christmas after its release. But later in the new year I went to a friend's house who had bought a TG-16 and I was amazed with the crips sounds and graphics of Keith Courage! Two months later I bought my own Turbo and I ended up collecting way more games for it than my Sega. Loved TG-16 to death! Still have mine and my complete game library! But of course the SNES bested them both!!

    There are two A/V (composite) options for the TG16 Option 1. Turbo-Booster comes with Composite output and a power port, it attaches to the expansion port,
    Option 2. Turbo Booster PLUS, same as above but with some RAM , this is the Turbo Booster I have , Hooked up with a Composite Monster Cable and My graphics are amazing

    For your line out composite/stereo needs without having to buy the the TurboGrafx CD. They were called the TurboBooster (adding only AV out) or the Booster Plus with the same features and system hosted memory backup. Many games with password save also had a "File Cabinet" feature which the TurboBooster Plus or Turbo CD expansion had. No password nightmares since the HuCards lacked battery backup obviously. The TG16 was a powerful system and a shooters dream, the best of em' never made it to Wii.

  • @malducci
    @malducci 14 лет назад

    The console itself actually has composite and stereo output right there on the back plane, that you showed in the video. It's just that the greedy NEC made customers buy the "booster" or "booster plus" to get access to it. So it do actually have it. It also had RGB out on those pins too.

Seriously, the TG-16 generates the best sounding chiptunes of all the pre CD based gaming platforms. Not that the music in TG-CD games aren't great as well though. I know - I recently bought the add on and am loving it too.

    It does have AV but you have to buy the adapter separately, also the cord for the controller is about as long as an atari 2600 controller so if you wanted to get a longer cord you would have to shell out more money for the extention cord along with buying another controller with the multitap, NEC was greedy.
