@@ElkCallingAcademy what’s funny about that is is the last six years or so I’ve gone back to the longbow and recurves, but I just pulled out my old golden eagle, and I’m looking at putting on a new string just to change it up and shoot a compound again
This video and a couple others like it it helped me realize how much of a bummer the peep really is. I grew up, shooting with no peep in my single digit, and then teenage years. Sight pic is just so good and free.
I'm strictly a hunter and have never used a peep until last year. It was great target shooting where I had all the time in the world and plenty of light. Come half way through the hunting season I took it off and threw it down the side of the mountain. Absolutely not needed.
Good video. I started with target recurve and tried compound several years later. When I purchased the compound I found the peep sight annoying so I removed it. No issues with accuracy sans-peep. Consistent anchor and form was already well ingrained from my recurve experience.
I run a peep with an EZV bowsight. Awesome how much it opens up your sight picture. You can shoot and arrow and literally watch the arrow fly down the center of the V and hit the target. Pins blocks so much arrow flight and ill never go back. Lots of guys run the EZV and peepless and can get some awesome groups.
I too use an EZV and currently use a peep. After 23 years, just got a New bow. Bear. The EZV is going on it when I go in to get it setup and I’m going peepless. The key for accuracy in archery for me is about constant practice
I’ve never understood why anyone uses a peep sight, you can move your anchor point a substantial amount and still see through the peep. That causes you to be inaccurate. Just use your anchor point and understand that it is critical
The last 5 years I have been hunting traditional equipment. Been pretty successful. With that I am going back to my compound. I have developed a really bad target anticipation. To the point it was hard to group at 20yards. Watched this video. I pulled my peep and without a circle around my sight housing I only focused on the pin and the target. I was able to settle and not feel like I had to punch to my the shot. Great video thanks for the tips.
I have been asking the same question. I shoot trad and want to shoot compound but i feel like getting a bow with sights i might as well just shoot my rifles. hitting a target with nothing but a gloved finger release is half the challenge.

I discovered I could shoot better with no peep by accident. Bought a new bow and wanted to shoot it a few times before getting peep installed. Using a 3-pin front sight, I shot a few arrows at close range and was drilling the 10 ring. I can’t get a kisser to line up right so I’m just going with 2 anchor points using a thumb release. I talked to a fellow at the local Cabelas he says he uses the IQ bow sight with the retina lock and no Peep and has absolutely no issues only problem for me is the cost of the IQ sights they are a little pricey.
I know what you're saying. I don't like horizontal multiple pins but I bought an IQ for a while. Since then I have purchased 2 EZV sights for 2 bows & the open sight window is what I need. I basically with the EZV never shoot left or right. If my elevation is right I'm on my spot. I actually had a peep on my bow early season a few years ago. A deer was very close & it moved very slowly. After 15 minutes I shot & of course it moved right when I touched off the thumb release. The movement was towards me & I ended up hitting it a little high & to the right. Nowhere near that shoulder. When the animal is very close any movement u can't pick up do to sight restriction is hard to see. That animal is a doe & she has had twin fawns the last 2 years. She has a younger sister but I did take her very old mother away from her later in the year I shot her. When I shot her it was like she went 20 yards & stopped. No blood, no blood on the arrow & 2 days later she was eating crab apples in the evening just 300 yards away. I have shot winter indoor league & won trophies. It's all about anchor & consistent shot execution. Next time u watch a good QB in a NFL game check & see if u see him using a sight?
Olympic archers are very accurate with fingers and no peep. I never used one for hunting the last 50 years either. And do not have any sad stories, like peep users do. As mentioned it is just easier for new archers to start that way. Also you can ba very accurate at longer ranges
Great video, I would like to see your groups though. I shot without a peep for years. Now I shoot with a peep, but this video got me thinking about ditching it again.
James Green thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I’ll see what I can do about putting together another video showing an update and include the groupings.
I've been researching this myself. I have the same problems with my vision now the older I get. Sometimes things aren't just blurry looking through the peep, but also I can see double pins. Using the one in the middle doesn't always work either. LOL
Ok, I understand the anchor points, and I'm gonna try this, this season. What I don't understand is, how you use 1 single pin at various distances. It seems to me that the single pin would be for one single distance, and you'd have to guess where to aim on the deer and hope you're aiming in the correct height (top of shoulder, spine, tree behind the deer, or further distances where you're aiming at the cloud, etc.). Whereas with three pins, each is set (on the heart) for their own distance, and you put the pin on the vital V every time and you know its gonna punch that spot. I'm trying to understand but I need help. Thank you!
Hey, Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. The single pin is an adjustable sight that has a sight tape with the different yardages based on the speeds the bow is shooting. When shooting 3d courses I’ll adjust the sight for each shot. Hunting is a little different. Before hunting season I will set my pin at 30 yards and then shoot from 20 and 40 while aiming at the same spot with the single pin set at 30. This will show me where my arrows are hitting at those distances and this give me my hold over/under for 20 & 40. It’s basically aiming using the Kentucky Windage approach. For me I hit an inch high at 20 and about 3 inches low at 40. I have used a 3 pin adjustable sight in the past and they will work for you also. I just prefer the sight picture that a single pin adjustable sight gives me. Best of luck and keep me updated on your progress!
i shoot a fixed single pin for aiming and i run a second pin in the sight window for ranging, if the torso of the deer fits just between or outside of the two pins its in range if not no shot. if there are branches in-between the top aiming pin and the top of my housing the arrow does not have clearance to fly. took a bit of trial and error to find what my acceptable drop was for my bow and arrow setup but it is the absolute fastest setup for mobile hunting with minimal equipment.
No it's great, I like the fact of removing one more non necessary variable. For me archery has been muscle memory and repetition. I would think in a few days you could work thru the change.
I’m going to have to measure my 50yd group size, never thought about it because a bullseye is a bullseye. I’ve grown accustomed to shooting at a different target with each arrow due to cost of replacements I was incurring at 30yds and just stuck with the five target setup at all distances. Sure , Why not. Back in the day, my first compound bows, didn't have a peep sight, just a couple brass pins, and I never had a peep sight, on my recurve or a pin . Just instinctive shooting.
I used a no peep sight awhile back, I was never able to get it set up just right. I have been wanting to go peep less for alot of the reasons you listed. When you tied the two kisser buttons can they be moved to fine tune. I have a four pin set up now sounds like you are saying to go to a one pin for a better sight picture is that correct.
What you need is proper form i have never used a peep sight or a release aid, fingers with a tab . Form, Form and practice, practice. 😊😊😊😊 end of lesson.
Your putting a lot into getting a perfect shot . I use a anchor sight and have no extras on my string and gives you every thing your saying . Check it out .
The pin is on the right side of the string. I will also use the vertical post of the single pin as an indicator to make sure I have the string at the same spot on my nose. (Making sure the gap between the string and the vertical post of the single pin is the same each time)
@@ElkCallingAcademy I haven't shot my compound bow in three years. Rotator cuff surgery twice on the same shoulder. Died the second surgery for an hour. They brought me back and here I am. Bought a crossbow so I could still hunt. But it's not the same.
I'm trying to get rid of my peep. Tired of worrying about twisting it when I go to shoot. So when you are aiming at your target what are the things you align to make sure you're going to shoot straight besides your anchor points? For example, where is the string lining up to when you're at full draw? I would greatly appreciate some advice. I really want to get rid of my peep.
The anchor pints are the big thing and the string will be on the left side of the pin post for me. That also gives me an indicator if I’m canting or torquing the bow.
@@ElkCallingAcademy I'm shooting a single pin just like how you were in this video. So as long as the string is on the left side pin (single pin so pin post is vertical)then that's it as far as making sure things are aligned. Then the dot on the target correct?
@@ElkCallingAcademy thanks for the help man! Hoping this works for me so I won't have to deal with a peep anymore. Best of luck on your hunts this year!
Until just a few years ago I didn't use a peep for hunting. You're not trying to score points. 99% of time you just need to hit within like 4" maybe 6" diameter spot on the side of a deer, elk or hog. Usually not using a peep is good enough to hit like a coyote at 30 yards +. The single most important thing is your form and release position consistency.
Exactly! I’ve received a ton of questions so I’ve decided to do a follow video and show off some sights that will give feedback on torque and anchor to help with that consistency. Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to leave a comment.
I'm 77 now been shooting for about 3p yrs not a tournament shooter just hunt I can still hit a golf tee ag 30 yrds without a peep more llight early and late side vision is better aim at a doe but now comes a buck from my left side both eyes open I see him pass the doe shoot the buck easy
I use a regular single pin sight and use the vertical pin as my torque indicator. I put my nose on the string so that my eye is to the right side of the string.
Seriously considering this as I am left eye Dom now but right handed. How long did you say you have been doing this and how many kills have you experienced with no peep?
I just went from wrist release to thumb release. I'm finding that I'm leaning in to look thru my peep. I'm not liking that. I started blank bailing and when I backed up to 10 yards I was dead on every shot (still blank bailing). I went back to 20 and my shot was off to the right when using the peep. I think I might just ditch it
No matter what weapon I use , I’m a less accurate using sights but a great shot without them within a range of say 75 yards or less . Just on fast intuition. There’s got to be others that shoot this way . But i don’t personally know anyone who doesn’t shoot without sights . What would be the proper term for someone who shoots this way ?
Waco Fishing they’re okay. I have spent extensive amounts of time with them but enough to be able to compare against other sights. I wouldn’t tell anyone not to use one.

How does ethis work with multi pin sights
I would imagine it would be the same. I’ll get a fixed pins sight and do some testing
Your putting a lot into getting a perfect shot . I use a anchor sight and have no extras on my string and gives you every thing your saying . Check it out .
I looked into the anchor sight when I was researching options for removing my peep.
I don't understand so do you blur the pin out with the string? Do you line the pin up with right side of the string at full draw ?
The pin is on the right side of the string. I will also use the vertical post of the single pin as an indicator to make sure I have the string at the same spot on my nose. (Making sure the gap between the string and the vertical post of the single pin is the same each time)
Nice video 👍
Lawrence Gardner thank you
@@ElkCallingAcademy I haven't shot my compound bow in three years. Rotator cuff surgery twice on the same shoulder. Died the second surgery for an hour. They brought me back and here I am. Bought a crossbow so I could still hunt. But it's not the same.
Hi, what kind of sight are you using?
@@DarrenGray-n6v I use a single pin sight which is the Accu Hunter from Axcel.
@@Bay_32 yes. It’s important to have a kisser button, or a nose button to ensure the anchor point is the same each time.
@@ElkCallingAcademy thanks for the help man! Hoping this works for me so I won't have to deal with a peep anymore. Best of luck on your hunts this year!
@@Bay_32 let me know how it goes for you! Best of luck to you too!
So happy I went peepless
Until just a few years ago I didn't use a peep for hunting. You're not trying to score points. 99% of time you just need to hit within like 4" maybe 6" diameter spot on the side of a deer, elk or hog. Usually not using a peep is good enough to hit like a coyote at 30 yards +. The single most important thing is your form and release position consistency.
Exactly! I’ve received a ton of questions so I’ve decided to do a follow video and show off some sights that will give feedback on torque and anchor to help with that consistency. Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to leave a comment.
Is it anyone that just have a mark on the string server binding( to have beside the pin) and nosebotton i will try this?
@@perbacksten6149 no mark on the steering beside the pin. The nose button and your release hand will be enough for consistency.
I'm 77 now been shooting for about 3p yrs not a tournament shooter just hunt I can still hit a golf tee ag 30 yrds without a peep more llight early and late side vision is better aim at a doe but now comes a buck from my left side both eyes open I see him pass the doe shoot the buck easy
do you need a IQ bow sight to shoot peepless? and without a peep wouldnt your string be in your line of sight ?
I use a regular single pin sight and use the vertical pin as my torque indicator. I put my nose on the string so that my eye is to the right side of the string.
@@ElkCallingAcademy i shall try it out . thanks !
@@jkpisces you’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
Seriously considering this as I am left eye Dom now but right handed. How long did you say you have been doing this and how many kills have you experienced with no peep?
trackhoe hunter I just strayed shooting with no peep last year and was successful on my elk this past fall.
In order for this to work do you have to have a vertical single pin
Aaron Geddens not necessarily. I prefer a single pin sight.
On the last shot you punched the trigger?
I just went from wrist release to thumb release. I'm finding that I'm leaning in to look thru my peep. I'm not liking that.
I started blank bailing and when I backed up to 10 yards I was dead on every shot (still blank bailing). I went back to 20 and my shot was off to the right when using the peep. I think I might just ditch it
World archery competitions shooting at 50m just use fwd sights and anchor points.
Did you stick to shooting without peep?
I shot that way for 6 years and just put a peep back in last week.
@@ElkCallingAcademy why did you put it back in?
@@kevintabor6586 curiosity.
The recurve guys mis a lot in competitions so yes
No matter what weapon I use , I’m a less accurate using sights but a great shot without them within a range of say 75 yards or less . Just on fast intuition. There’s got to be others that shoot this way . But i don’t personally know anyone who doesn’t shoot without sights . What would be the proper term for someone who shoots this way ?
@@TWillWin instinctive shooting.
@@ElkCallingAcademy Thank you very much ! Yeah not as common in my experience as I think it should be
@@TWillWin you’re welcome!
“Can you shoot a bow accurately without a peep?” Post your honest 5 spot or Vegas scores you shot without a peep.
Went peerless in 2013...won championships in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Peep sights are NOT necessary
Just did this, only with a kisser button and Bowmar nose button, works well
Have you checked the IQ sights with retina lock? It has a point there to help you go peepless.
Waco Fishing yes I am familiar with them.
@@ElkCallingAcademy what do you think of them?
Waco Fishing they’re okay. I have spent extensive amounts of time with them but enough to be able to compare against other sights. I wouldn’t tell anyone not to use one.
Thanks for your response! I really like your videos, very informative and helpful!
Waco Fishing thank you for watching and appreciate you taking the time to comment.
To much facial contact
If you all have not seen a documentary called.. it's worse than you think.... By revelations of Jesus Christ ministries..... I suggest you do. All praise and glory to the most high Jesus Christ
Just buy an actual nose button man
I do use a Bowman nose button now but they weren’t out yet when I made this video
@@ElkCallingAcademy I think Im taking my peep off after this season.
