Your videos have been very helpful to me. I have been playing since 1969 and I just ordered my first e-Kit. I ordered a TD-27KV Kit. Thank you.I may convert one of my acoustic kits to electronic. I found your trigger videos helpful too.
Still a better deal to purchase the hand-made Drum-TEC Jam series. The Jam series offers bigger toms than the other models with an upgradable Diablo hand hammered Snare (for position sensors). Drum-TEC triggers work great especially on the Diablo series and the hand made drums are simply the best.
I love Drum-tec but I think you may be mistaken on the sizes of the shells offered in the jam series. They are offered in sizes if 10"-12", compared to 10"-12"-14" for the vad. Also they only feature one side trigger versus three on the roland vad. Drum-tech Pro series are THE benchmark though!
DaveSeeMeRollin The Jam series are great for the toms only because they are bigger than the Diablo. The Diablo Hand Hammered snare with the Diablo bass drum with a TD-27 work great. They allow you to customize the kits. I have a TD-17 and TD-50. This kit works perfect with both. Save about $550.
Joshua Ferry. the Drum-TEC Diablo series have a great trigger system and Jam series is good fir toms only. Diablo snare and bass with a digital snare, save $600.
Drum tec uses center piezo, which causes hot spots, these have 3 piezos on the edge of the head, which is better. Still, ATV is king due to better build quality and looks.
Very interesting to see them include the digital ride and snare in the 27 for the $3000 price point. Seems like a good option for the people that wanted the digital components but didn't want to spring for the Td-50 module bundle.

Very interesting.... I wonder if they will have an upgrade path to for this like they did with the TD-50 .... also the VAD line looks like it has three triggers like ATV, so... positional sensing?
Hej Justin, looking at your channel and seeing that you are a real Roland fan, I started to look at Roland myself and yeah for the extra few bucks I am getting into Roland myself. I always looked at the Alesis Strike Pro S, the size of the kit 4toms, 4cymbals always had my attention... Now seeing the Roland's set's and the digital snare and ride on the TD-27kv really has my attention as well as the VAD306. Going to hop over to the reviews of the TD-27KV and the VAD-306 Keep those quality vid's coming ;)
I tried to watch your other vid but it says “private”. My interest is in the module really. I want to do a conversation instead. But the 27 is very interesting. The part I don’t understand is the literature saying things about the channels and the midi interface. It made me think that I would be able to switch between the SD3 and the module presets at will. I love that they have the digital inputs. Plus I love the 3 aux plus a dedicated crash 2. You must be back and this info may be on that vid. PatroonPatreon memberships?
I went with the Alesis Strike Pro SE. I've been playing it every day for about an hour or two and it definitely has been fun. It's not the same as acoustic but, a good tool for practicing at night and early A:M! I'm glad I did not wait for the new line of Roland kits. The TD50 still seems to be one of the better kits though, just very pricey in my opinion. Nice info and video though! You're insight and how to videos have helped me quite in the Edrum world.

I like the vh 10. I think I saw this morning on DrumTec the module plus snare and ride for about € 1250. Plus a flight case for €99 ? More or less. I’ll have to look again. Can’t wait to hear what you can do with SD3 and this module. Maybe the footswich ( which is cool...had it on my td20) can help with SD3. Loving the Real Feel 3 ply you recommended. Only bought one for my snare to tryout. It’s a winner. The rep at DrumTec advised me to get the Design 2 ply BD because of triggering problems with the three ply there. Ralf plays the triple ply on his snare and loves it. Awaiting your return Sir !!
An upgrade kit with the TD-27 module might be more compelling than the TD-50 Digital Upgrade kit, since the TD-27 is $1300 cheaper. Is the harness for the module a complete set of cables, or just a short breakout of trigger inputs?
What are your preferences between the ATV’s and the 506? We are replacing our sound system at our church and getting a new e drum set with the purchase. I’ve been deciding between ATV, 506, and the pearl emerge. What would be your preference. Love the looks of the full drum set obviously, but the pearl is available right now and seems to sound great. Thoughts?
I wish edrums would come down in price...I have been looking at used edrums but people want what they paid for it...rent is outrageous in southern Cali so saving money for drums isn't an option. Love the videos lol I can't afford anything you talk about but you really seem to love everything you talk about and that will do I guess
Hey Justin - great video. Thanks for posting. I don't know how the heck we could ever get this kind of info without your vids so thanks!! I like the acoustic drums and I'm glad Roland finally did this. Also It's good to have a kit that you can get the digital snare and cymbal without spending so much more on the TD50 kit or upgrade. The whole kit for 3000 whereas the upgrade kit alone with the TD50 is 3500. One question - you mentioned the 3 ply head on the snare and floor tom. Roland doesn't even sell the 3 ply replacement head. ??? Is there any way to purchase it? thank you
Hi Justin, i have a question about Alesis's kits, Alesis strike pro came out 4 years ago, looks fantastic, but may have issues, do you think that exact kit is still being manufactured today, im asking because the new strike pro se is with black trim with gold & black stand i do not like the look for my home, so was wondering if the original strike pro is still being manufactured today & wondering if they would of added any fault improvements since manufacturing in 2016
Bro I just bought a TD-17KVX, I haven’t watched the whole vid yet but I really hope none of these make me regret my purchase Edit: These all look like they’re higher tier and also MASSIVE in size, so I’m good, thankfully.
This is great because it will create more price competition. I think the equivalent Drumtec kit is around $6500. Those kits look great, I don’t like Rolands sounds as much as the Mimic pro or Strike modules, but that’s easily fixable if you’re using them for recording. The third digital input must be for a $2000 Roland digital hi hat. Great hats, snare and ride matter the most IMO. It’s still insane how much eDrums are. I think I would take the Strike Pro SE over any other set. It’s half the price. I’d use the extra money on ATV hats and *maybe* a drum tec snare. Hope you get a chance to play these as Namm.
hey guys, that extra USB trigger in can be used to charge your phone. Tried it while playing the drums just now. I wonder if you can plug in a mouse into the module to trigger sounds from there.
I do not have one, but from what I can tell, and hear, they will always be in the top 5 best ekits for a long time. They sound good, and are sturdy. I am guilty of wanting to try the newer stuff, when I probably should gave grabbed that craigslist bargain...
Roland did have a good idea and I think they sound great. I will be looking ford to if I ever get the chance to play these good looking good sounding drum sets.
Great video as always 👍 . I'm very interested by the Roland VAD506 to change my TD30k. I was very interested by the ATV aDrums but this new Roland product make the choice difficult. The sound's module isn't a problem with VSTs (using Superior drummer 3). I prefer the look of the ATV cymbals (the 17" china is the only one on the market), but the Roland digital snare and ride are possibly the best of the market and the shells are better sized (20" kick- 14" snare- 10-12-14" toms for Roland against 18" kick - 13"snare - and 10-10-13" toms for ATV). The next videos will be interesting to choose.
Great video Justin thanks. I like the top of the line acoustic edrum sorry forgot the number s an letters. Roland does make great edrums in my opinion.
Terrific summary of Roland's introduction. Question: are there (non-Roland) sound modules available that are compatible with Roland's digital ride cymbal and snare?
The shells for the VAD306 look like they are from the old Pearl Rhythm Traveler, available used with hardware plus regular and mesh heads for $300 at the local MusicGoRound. (Just noticed them today.)
i was planning to get a TD-17 KVX but now i really like how the TD-27KV looks and it has sounds from both the TD-17 and TD-50... now im torn on what to do :/
Second thought. I like the VAD506. I think I’m really excited about the 27 module. I emailed DrumTec about the USB 28 ch midi interface and Bluetooth and 3aux plus crash. I asked about buying just the 16” but they aren’t selling it separately yet. I asked if I was correctly understanding the 28ch USB. You can tell me when you get back. But I think I can have my SD3 and ez and stock sounds all in order on the module so you can go back and forth like in a chain. That for me is a game changer. That feature, if true, allows me occasionally to use the sounds from the module where usually I would only have a module for running VSTs. I would buy a less expensive unit. DrumTec has loaded their Sound Edition library in the 27 and sells individually for €1299 which is $1441.00. Nice flight case for 99€ more. I asked about only buying the module at Zzounds and they aren’t doing that yet. Hope you’re enjoying NAMM.
will be interesting to hear from purchasers how these things have held up after a year or two.... kinda glad I didnt bite with some of the reports of earlier models
Seems like nice sets, but if you compare them to the Alesis Strike Pro SE, you cannot justify any if them. Mich more value in the SE. Yes, you get so.e digital outputs with Roland, but the Alesis module is highly adjustable, and I was able to get a huge rock sound by modifying new big bird kit on v1.5. I was able to also add the nitro extension for two more cymbals that inuse for splashs, using some splitters and assigning two tom rims as splash cymbals. Still can do two more. So for 2500, you get a top of the line, more acoustic sounding kit.
How do you raise the Roland kit volume fast in a live situation? On an acoustic kit you just play louder. I haven’t had a chance to experiment with any inline amps, maybe an overboost guitar pedal? …
Philip Daniels just soundcheck at full volume to set max level then run at Half volume when checking with band. when you need more level, turn it up at the kit. Phones is independent from mains anyway.
Has anyone any thoughts on the 27 KV? Any good / not so good points hopefully? I realise it hasn’t been out long which could make this more difficult. Anything would be appreciated. I'm hopefully due to try it out soon and could post here at least what I found from a first test. I'm trying to look into a similar Yamaha kit at least price wise and see what I find there. Again any thoughts?
I am still waiting for a kit that plays better and has as much flexibility as my 15 year old TD20 with expansion pack. I keep checking out new kits, up to the TD50, but have not liked the direction Roland has gone with the sounds. Will be interesting to try the TD27 module, even though it is a ‘mid level’ module. I use all the 8 direct outs of my TD20 into my mixing desk and daw to give me post production control over the mix. I will have to check out the multichannel USB out works on the TD27 and whether it will interface with my desk. Be nice if Roland release a digital break-out box, to allow the USB to be used like a snake to a stage box.
Actually, I should qualify that. A TD30 has the TD20 instrument set, but has improvements for reducing the machine gun effect rapid snare rolls and smoother cymbal swells. That would be nice. Unfortunately second hand TD30s have kept their value (I wonder why - he, he). Almost as much as getting a new TD50 brain.
I went ahead and got the td-27. I really like that td27 module after looking at it a bunch. The fact they give you the digital snare and ride is great. My set arrives tmrw and I am super excited for it! Its a bit overboard for me but I am upgrading from a Yamaha DTXPRESS III Electronic Drum Set that I bought on craigslist for $275 over 9 years ago now lol.
@@sljnrice I love this kit. Coming from my old kit to this is just an insane upgrade. I also think it is the most bang for the buck with the digital package it comes with. Of course, the sounds aren't the best (mainly just the toms). I think thats typical for Roland and they are infamous for their tom sounds. I have a 16ft usb cable coming so I can hook it up to the pc and get some drumming software for better sounds. I am super happy with this purchase as I said earlier, its an insane upgrade for me. Something really awesome is I hooked up one of my pads from my Yamaha kit and it works perfectly. My one cymbal from the old kit is shorted out and on the td27 it wont work at all. With my old kit it will still work as a crash just fine. I was too worried about the Alesis and its longevity. Roland has a clean record with how long their products can last for. I figured if I was going to spend three grand on a set, I should go for the best of the best. Eventually I'll add a pd-125 to the kit and have another floor tom. I love that they added more aux inputs so you have the option to expand without losing a zone on a pad some where else. For me personally this kit is perfect (besides the tom sounds >.
kosta1605 thanks Kosta, it sounds like you made a great purchase. I’m still researching, and may go with the VAD503. I’m sold on the KD27 brains tho. I too will add more pads later. I agree with others that say the snare n hi-hat are deal-breakers, and Roland has those locked-down imho. I don’t mind dead-sounding toms...I always muted the hell out of my acoustic sets anyways. Let us know what drum software you use on your laptop. I’m guessing that’s gonna suck me in eventually too. Cheers!
@@sljnrice The software is the part I am having a hard time choosing. I think Ezdrummer 2 will probably be the easiest to get working with the module. I am a noob when it comes to this part of it. I used the stock sounds on my old kit lol.
Awesome Justin! FINALLY Roland have acoustic size shells 👏 Seems they’ve crammed a whole heap of features across various modules into the TD27. Still, I prefer the TD30/25 sound modeling. The size of the toms on the TD27KV don’t bother me, it’s the small kick tower they still use. It just looks out of place! And STILL no touch screen, they just can’t let go of old LCD technology. Love the fact you get the digital pack and that 16” crash! 😃 Look forward to your in depth vids on these 👍
I would love to own the VAD 4piece cus pf the looks and thinner cymbals. I dont care for the module when it comes to the sound cause I use VSTs (I just need it to work well)
Be nice if roland offered a TD50k shell upgrade pack, i have the TD50K and i really want to purchase a shell pack and cymball upgrade, the ATV artist series is closest to what i would like but i would like the option to have a second floor tom insted of the extra rack tom, but you end up paying through the nose and now roland offer this but not without the module option which sucks id like to see how much it would be without it. Only time will tell i guess
I'm with you. I love carrying in my fully-assembled TD-1KV with one arm, plunking it down, plugging in, and that's that. For musical theater pit. However, for my classic rock band it would look like a joke. So I can see its appeal in certain scenarios.
I went with the TD50KV and it all fits it two rolling cases. Before that I was lugging around a DW collectors series and it took 7 trips to the car to load everything in. These new kits are not for gigging drummers that have to tear down every time.
If I win the lottery, what's the best drumset and audio system I could buy for my new beach house (I'd like it to be in Europe, but I don't mind shipping from other continents)?
The black sparkle on the finish is a nice touch but sucks Roland is offering limited sizes and the hi hat is still 12” which I don’t understand. I guess Yamaha edrums are not trying anymore? 🤷♂️ I haven’t seen news for awhile now of them doing anything. Also ATV full kit is now silent which I was hoping for cause I want multiple sizes.
I don’t get it; one of the main reasons I bought edrums is they were compact and easy to set up in ever shrinking gig locations. Now the trend is to make them the size of acoustic drum sets. WTF?
Charms434 - another audience? Of who? Fans of acoustic drums? You can get a great set of real, acoustic drums for less than this Roland set. I just don’t understand the logic here.
It's for those who wants to play drums as close as possible to an acoustic kit without getting noise complaints from their neighbour, specially if they live in an apartment.
Even Zzounds has this kit...KV 27 is $3999.. 12 pmts of $333.33. I’d be a player for the module and digital snare and ride upgrade. That’s € 2199 at DrumTec. Just the module €1299 plus you can buy a Flight case for it for another €99. I would want the 16 crash too.
just watch the 'sounds video form roland td27..... so... quite tight kits no resonating toms/snares like on my td30 ...so ARE there kit's like that...have roland just demo'd dance tight kit's here only?
Is there anyone that has a TD-50 and tried that 3rd midi input? I want to get a nother 18DR ride but I'm not sure if it'll work, knowing Roland it might not register? Anyone???
The digital Ride and snare at a lower Roland price point is the key differentiator vs the competition, but don’t see anyone particularly excited about it? Clearly following ATV on the new trigger design.
Stupid question that you've probably answered a hundred times before: how loud are the acoustic style kits? I have a kit with a small mesh snare and kick, then rubber toms, but i feel that it's still pretty loud for an apartment.
L Hampton Roland mesh heads are very quiet. The only thing that makes any noise on my TD 50 KV set is the digital ride because it’s a hard rubber bell.
@@bhutch216 good to know. I'm more concerned about the noise going through the floor though. I currently live above some VERY tolerant neighbors, but they're moving out soon. And now that you mention it, i do think my cymbals are the loudest thing.
Hi Justin, indeed interesting for Roland. I honestly believe that Roland has come in too late. They're still massively $$ where for the same price & effort one could take a DW & have it be best of both. Roland could be VERY useful in deeper modules only (acknowledging that the digital snare & ride is counted as a innovation). Somewhat like KORG's wavedrums - espanding exploratory drum triggers. I own a TD30 & TD20x. Love them both but mine have never seen a small drum size while in service.

Very interesting. Nice vid, bro!
Looks pretty nice awesome video
I totally think about upgrading my td17 module to the new one and with progression buy the digital pads.
hey guys, that extra USB trigger in can be used to charge your phone. Tried it while playing the drums just now.
I wonder if you can plug in a mouse into the module to trigger sounds from there.
I’ll just stick with my td30 for life it sounds great and gets the jobby job done no complaints
I do not have one, but from what I can tell, and hear, they will always be in the top 5 best ekits for a long time. They sound good, and are sturdy. I am guilty of wanting to try the newer stuff, when I probably should gave grabbed that craigslist bargain...
hi Justin, just wanted to say, you might want to try out drum tec Roland sound expansion s. not necessarily for review, just good sounds
Thanks for all your videos! The Canadian price for the td27kvx will probably almost 4K so I’ll be looking for a good deal on td17kvx
Yes it's 4000 Canadian here
Nick Bauman il get a td17 lol
Just got my ATV EXS-5 w/ TD-17 module this week. No regrets. They're playing catch up.
Great video Justin thanks. I like the top of the line acoustic edrum sorry forgot the number s an letters. Roland does make great edrums in my opinion.
I just watched the one u posted then u post again 😂😂
Sorry man, there was a sync issue in the last version. Had to delete the old one
@@65Drums ah that's why 😂 lovin the vids 👍
PD-140DS Digital snare is where its at!
Terrific summary of Roland's introduction. Question: are there (non-Roland) sound modules available that are compatible with Roland's digital ride cymbal and snare?
No, Roland (so far) is the only company that does this. You would need a module with usb-trigger ports and only the TD50 and TD27 have these.
@@droopydoc55 Thank you Ruud.
Should I get the VAD306 or the Alesis Strike Pro SE ? HELPPPP!!!!
Have you seen the Xdrum DD-670 E drum kit ? £899 new on Ebay currently. Made in China.
The shells for the VAD306 look like they are from the old Pearl Rhythm Traveler, available used with hardware plus regular and mesh heads for $300 at the local MusicGoRound. (Just noticed them today.)
There's more going on there than it looks like on the surface. Just played it yesterday and talked to the people who made it
Love music go round.
i was planning to get a TD-17 KVX but now i really like how the TD-27KV looks and it has sounds from both the TD-17 and TD-50... now im torn on what to do :/
Digital snare is incredible!! Worth it.
wait until they reveal the 3rd digital pad
Can’t afford one ,currently using a td1kv ,looking forward to buy a 11k or 17k
I really don’t give a damn what Roland puts out anymore cause I’ll never be able to afford their kits anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
no worries. Yamaha make just as high quality gear for a much fairer price
Tunasub just buy a Alesis strike puts Roland in the dust
Chet Weeds That’s the plan
Chet Weeds not even close.
Marcus Spain Yamaha and Alesis aren’t even on the ballpark with Roland. You get what you pay for. The Alesis sounds now are comparable to the TD 20
will be interesting to hear from purchasers how these things have held up after a year or two.... kinda glad I didnt bite with some of the reports of earlier models
Id like to know whats new and whats good with those "digital pads" ? Are they more accurate or something ?
Djokker LOL I can understand why you would to know that.
I wonder if they'll do a td27 digital upgrade pack... I certainly hope so
It's already up for order on drum tecs website. It's 800€ less than the 50.
What’s more worth it? Td27kv or vad306?
Depends if you want td27 module or td17 module
And you don,t get the digital pads with 306
Roland should just send you all the new kits for review, you know your sh@t dude when it comes to E drums, your vids helped me out heaps cheers mate
TD7 Vs TD50 - sounds
TD27 - 728 voices
TD50 - 400 voices
I have a td-10 exp and still having fun.
I went ahead and got the td-27. I really like that td27 module after looking at it a bunch. The fact they give you the digital snare and ride is great. My set arrives tmrw and I am super excited for it! Its a bit overboard for me but I am upgrading from a Yamaha DTXPRESS III Electronic Drum Set that I bought on craigslist for $275 over 9 years ago now lol.
kosta1605 let us know your impressions after a few days of play. I’m thinking of getting it also...seems like the most bang for the buck.
I dont care for the module when it comes to the sound cause I use VSTs (I just need it to work well)
How often are the flagship drumkits renewed? I like dreaming about the kits I will be able to afford in 10 years.
Also why didnt the noctune kit include full size shells i just dont get that. Its the top of the line surely it should be full size?
VAD306 at 2500 how does it compare to TD17KV?
Why on earth would I want to lug around heavier hardware?
I mean, call me crazy but I'm 56 and have been working to lighten my kit =p
Analogy: I have an electric keyboard that imitates a grand piano and does a great job. I don't need to carry a grand piano anymore.
@@bhutch216 Absolutely are for giving drummers. Big pieces but simple setup. Looks the part, which is important as well as sound
If I win the lottery, what's the best drumset and audio system I could buy for my new beach house (I'd like it to be in Europe, but I don't mind shipping from other continents)?
Keep em coming
The black sparkle on the finish is a nice touch but sucks Roland is offering limited sizes and the hi hat is still 12” which I don’t understand. I guess Yamaha edrums are not trying anymore? 🤷♂️ I haven’t seen news for awhile now of them doing anything. Also ATV full kit is now silent which I was hoping for cause I want multiple sizes.
I don’t get it; one of the main reasons I bought edrums is they were compact and easy to set up in ever shrinking gig locations. Now the trend is to make them the size of acoustic drum sets. WTF?
wegogreycup choices dude. Choices! We all win. Relax.
U don’t get that they want to cater to another audience?
Charms434 - another audience? Of who? Fans of acoustic drums?
You can get a great set of real, acoustic drums for less than this Roland set. I just don’t understand the logic here.
It's for those who wants to play drums as close as possible to an acoustic kit without getting noise complaints from their neighbour, specially if they live in an apartment.
Raedo - those shells are strictly for show. You’re paying through the nose for something that does nothing.
Would love to see a non bias comparison of this product with the ATV for use in small churches.
I dont understand the prices for Edrums. Acoustic drums are a lot harder to make. I just dont get it!
Wow!!! Is it good to play as it good to look at??
I'll find out soon hopefully
And I just bought a Td-17kvx :/
the 3rd input is for a 2nd digital snare for people who like side snares
Possibly
Great mic sound on your voice
Even Zzounds has this kit...KV 27 is $3999.. 12 pmts of $333.33. I’d be a player for the module and digital snare and ride upgrade. That’s € 2199 at DrumTec. Just the module €1299 plus you can buy a Flight case for it for another €99. I would want the 16 crash too.
just watch the 'sounds video form roland td27..... so... quite tight kits no resonating toms/snares like on my td30
...so ARE there kit's like that...have roland just demo'd dance tight kit's here only?
Is there anyone that has a TD-50 and tried that 3rd midi input? I want to get a nother 18DR ride but I'm not sure if it'll work, knowing Roland it might not register? Anyone???
The digital Ride and snare at a lower Roland price point is the key differentiator vs the competition, but don’t see anyone particularly excited about it? Clearly following ATV on the new trigger design.
Your honesty is beautiful. #CallEmOut
@@bhutch216 thanks!
L Hampton I have 3 young kids. Their rooms are on both sides of my drum room. I can jam all day and night and they don’t wake up.
@@bhutch216 good to know. I'm more concerned about the noise going through the floor though. I currently live above some VERY tolerant neighbors, but they're moving out soon. And now that you mention it, i do think my cymbals are the loudest thing.
Wow...Roland has finally sized up!
They should call em 3k 4k 5k
So we dont half to look em up and get disappointed
Make sure to checkout the Alesis strike pro SE and compare to these new releases from Roland!
The Alesis is 2xcheaper, and feels like a toy in comparison. -a strike pro owner
Td27 has more usb multitrack channels than the td50?
YES the TD27 has 28 channels , the TD50 has 10
@@cresshead wow, that's shitty lol.
Wow! Roots Funk!
