I thought I was going to learn something. Instead 6 and a half minutes just to be reminded a few times that losing that amount of oil “isn’t quite normal”
Saved me with this comment, cheers
Zakir Hussain yeah me too, load of rubbish
Same here. I had this issue with my old vw golf mk4 with similar engine 1.6
Great comment. Guess we know he’s a Subaru fanboy
@@dusanradanovic2487 engine is very poor.....weak and problems with oil leaks.....👎
You know it's bad when a Subaru driver is complaining about oil consumption from another manufacturer...
I dont know man my ej is using very little
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ha indeed! I have an Outback and an A4 and the Outback burns way more oil.
No worse engine made then Sabaru, stone age design
Im on the 2nd A4 audi, first one with 260000km, still didnt consumed 1l on 10k.
I have also a subaru, i change every 5k, so i dont notice oil consumption.
But, i had a Honda with the d16z6 engine... boy... that one was like a 2 stroker. 1l 500km. Vtec liked oil.
I drink 1 litre of oil every 3 months that keeps my joints in shape, does it mean I'm German?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like my German colleague answers for almost every question, “it depends” 😂
The oil consumption issue is due to the piston rings they used from 2009 to mid 2013. They are thin to "reduce friction" and get coked up with carbon really easily and don't scrape oil off the cylinder walls like they should. They either get stuck inside the ring lands or in more extreme cases, get stuck slightly expanded and break scoring up the cylinder walls, etc. You can try doing a piston soak with Marvel Mystery Oil by simply removing a spark plug, making sure the piston is at bottom dead center and simply pouring it in through the spark plug hole filling the cylinder. Obviously, you don't run the engine in this condition. Let it sit anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Then with the plug still removed, crank the engine over ( Remove the fuel pump fuse so it doesn't try and fire and the injectors aren't spraying gasoline into the cylinder you are trying to clean out.) to remove the remaining MMO. Place a shop rag over the hole to collect what sprays out. Replace the spark plug, coil, and fuses you pulled and change the oil. Next, drive it like you stole it for a while on the highway. It will probably smoke a little and that's to be expected due to some MMO remaining in the cylinders.
I also injected distilled water steam to the air intake while engine idling for at least 15 minutes. And drove the car hard. Repeated the process 5 times each day.
That helped recover compression from 170 to 178 and got rid of oil consumption.
I’m a little confused, how to you crank the engine over to make the pistons be at the bottom like you said. And also why would I need to replace the spark plug and coil if it’s the piston rings that are the issue. Lastly, would I replace each spark plug and coil or just the ones from which I poured the MMO in, i guess you’d pour MMO on every piston
It's the poor design of the oil ring holes in the piston and the oil rings themselves. The oil ring holes in the piston get blocked and the oil cannot be wiped off the cylinder walls and return to the sump. The oil therefore enters the combustion chamber and is burnt. I was told this by my VW dealer and I'm having my pistons and rings replaced. They recon that this problem was only discovered 2 years ago, I call bullshit as VAG have known about this for at least 5 years. VAG are super dishonest....Don't buy their products! You will get caught eventually and be up for big $$$$ to fix their design flaws.
ended up replacing pistons and larger rings on my 2010 a4, just cost me parts thank god but pain in the ass.
@@TheTactical6string As I keep saying to people, under no circumstances ever buy a VAG product unless you like being shafted.
In the UK I worked at an Audi Franchise and it mostly affected the A4 B8 and A5 1.8 and 2.0 tfsi engines. The fix was modified pistons and con rods. We had a tech who could take an engine out do the work and have it back together usually within a day (assuming all parts were available).

@@carel20081 ok … three years later
Hello from India , my December 2011 make VW Polo 1.2 TDI driven 150000kms consumes 500ml to 1500ml engine oil depending upon cold starts running instantly without warming up. Another factor that I have noticed is different brands of oils are consumed or oxidised differently depending on their quality.
1. When I used Castrol Magnatec professional 5w-40 for 6 consecutive oil changes, engine consumed or oxidised 750ml oil in every 15000kms.
2. When I changed to Castrol Edge 5w-40 for the 7th service at 105000kms, engine consumed or oxidised just 500ml in 15000kms.
3. Now when VW workshop changed to Shell 5w-40 inside their VW printed grey bottle for 120000kms mark and 135000kms mark, Engine consumed or oxidised 1500ml reaching 15000kms.
So what I have felt is, it's not only the engine's design flaw that contributes to the oil consumption but also the chemistry of the oil that contributes to the oil consumption.
I've got bmw e39 530d (M57 engine) 256000 miles on the clock and from change to change oil i dont put even 1ml of oil. So 6,5 litre fresh going in and when changing 6,5 going out. Can you belive that? Because i still can not. Coolant as well is on the same level from the day when i change it.
Is that the 3.0 used in early l322 Range Rover mine has 200000 miles on it and doesn’t use any oil at all

Hi, I just bought Audi A4 2009 and it has same problem of oil burning / consumption. I don't wanna spend money on fixing it, so what's the solution? should I keep filling the engine oil after every 3-4 weeks? Is that okay?
I’m just curious what you ended up doing or how it worked out
I ve done a 4000km trip in my audi a6 2012 3.0 tdi and i had to top it up with 500ml . i knew that some of the cars will consume a few ml of oil even the newer models but i was too lazy to look in the book
hi my 2010 audi a4 have burning oil ,its not bad for the engine ? i should change the oil evrey 6 monthes
Please, can you tell me which is the best oil for audi 1.8 - TFSI 2009 petrol - LPG, for engine and (DSG) transmission automatic
Its Audi's perpetual lubrication system.
By using 1L of oil every 1000km you are topping up with fresh oil every 5000km, genius really.
@Brianna Columbo oil consumption leads to power loss, builds up carbon quicker and the longer you ignore it the more the cylinders get scored and burn oil quicker and quicker. Im expecting my car back this week from a consumption rebuild

Hello.
What about the audi a3 1.5 petrol 2017/2018 tfsi engines with the oil consumption levels?did they fix it and if so what did audi do to solve it please?
Hello. In which engine models does this happen?
From reading comments... sounds like EVERY VW 0_o
The older 2.0 PCV systems dumped a lot of oil in the intake too. I wonder if that was a part of it?
Not sure of the exact year it changed but at least 2017 and newer have a much better PCV system.
My old Vauxhall Astra diesel did exactly the same, and I was advised by two Vauxhall engineers from two separate garages that this was “absolutely normal”.
Salut, frumos video. Informatia pe care o cautam, era cand s-a remediat problema. Deci in intervalul 2003-2013 1.8 si 2.0TFSI aveau probleme. Poti te rog, sa revii cu un update, daca ai informatii acutalizate?
The thing is that this started a long time ago.. At least from 2000.. and even back. But when direct injection was introduced at vw group then the oil burning became so much more obvious!
B8.5 has the exact same problem so it didn't end in 2014 lol
I carry extra oil just in case 🤣. Topped it up just a week or two ago. (2016 model with 130,000 km)
That being said I do have a heavy right foot. If I drive conservatively though I can last from service to service without having to top up.
Nah, it's not your heavy foot. These still had the problem in the B8.5 & B9 platforms (so yours') can be these things;
PCV Failure
Plugs & Wires, Ignition Coils, Fuel Injectors
Motor Mounts.
Honestly if I knew that VAG had 24yrs of this problem, I'd have never bought an Audi. My 2014 A5 has been a tank, until it started chugging oil. Then it starting chuggin at low RPMs which progressed into full on injector failure & a bumpy ride from a jumpy engine.
The throttle body also gets carbon buildup, which causes all these other things to happen with it.
Paid $13K for this car, I have no interest in putting in $9K+ in parts & labor to fix their design flaw. Even Kias can make it past 100K. These 2.0 Audis will BRICK at 100K if you don't basically rebuild the whole EPC system & rebuild the entire engine.
What about the new Audi A6 (C8) 55Tfsi? Still have this problem? I'm thinking about buying it.
Im looking to buy the a5 2013 which is the facelift. Has the problem been fixed with the new ones?
good question
yes b8.5 has updated pistons rings and tensioner on chain.
My subaru wrx 2.5 4 cyl consumes more oil then my 2007 s4 ever did
Yes😀😀
There were 2 years of specific 2.0L models that had oil consumption issues. They were corrected. I had an Audi A4 with 275,000 miles and my brother bought for his kids. I currently have a 3.2L Audi A6 with 240,000 miles and a 2014 Audi A6 TDI with 112,000 miles. They go 10,000 miles with maybe 1/2 to 1 quart oil replacment.
Have 3.2 with 230k. Looking at sline 3.0 w 120 but found pending multiple misfires which couldn’t be felt. Just worried plugs and fuel treatment coil packs etc won’t be the solution as mechanic advised was probable. Guy wants me to make an offer today!
More like 20yrs. John.
How about the oil consumption on b8.5/b9?They say that the problem with oil consumption on these models is fixed. I am looking to buy an b8.5 2.0 tfsi but i m not sure about this problem.
Google "new cars that burn oil" you will see what comes up
I have a 2017 B9 2.0 TFSI and it uses no oil at all. Oil changes every 12,000 miles.
If i get an A7, 3.0tfsi 2014 or younger, safe to say this problem shouldnt exist?
My 2006 A4 Avant has 535000 Kms and uses one litre every 5k kms....synthetic since new. Still love this car!
Hahahah...lier
i need to say that's impressive. 3.2L? or 2.0L/1.8L?
My brother had the same car as yours which he purchased brand new and he managed to slow the consumption problem by using Motul Sport Ester 5W-50 oil. As you said 10W - 60 was to thick which he tried and settled for Motul. Great oil.
Castrol sells 20 w 50 w zinc
got b9 a4 tdi 2.0, i just bought it and there were 4litres of oil inside, and i changed it for 4,7 litres of new one, so it did not consume more than 0,7L for last 30.000 km, I wonder if it will drain as much as youre suggesting, if yes ill be super sad :D and id have to not change oil but add oil 6x per 30.000 km of suggested change intervals by audi.
does the a3 2.0 tfsi have the same piston ring problem as the a5?
The 2010-2013 model does
Mazda rx8’s are thirsty when it comes to oil.
Alfa twin spark engine was variable in its usage
The viscosity of the oil breaks down. The burning gives you room to put some in.
Rx8 is made to consume oil as it has special oil feed for apex seals. To prevent more damage. Is just how them engines work.
Use oil bought directly from Audi. Don’t let all of the other manufacturers trick you in synthetic oil that’s cheap
Agree
my 10 year old audi 2.0 tdi eats next to none of oil. i change oil every 10000km and never during that interval do i have to add oil
The problem is :
- Low tension oil scraping rings (wear very quickly due to the strength of Alusil cylinder bores).
- Piston oil drain holes are too small and are misplaced.
Effective Solution 1: new pistons and rings.
Solution that works for some cases: Three stages engine flush using BG 109 as called BG EPR
How much will each of these solutions cost?
@@doublej5045 solution 1: 4000 euros.
Solution 2: 100 euros.
Audi used slightly oval pistons in the A4 2.0t....i did hundreds of pistons and rings jobs at the dealership, we swapped A3 pistons and rings into A4 and that stopped it. Sometimes you would find scored cylinder walls and had to replace the block.

back in earlier years like 2000 VW paid Getrag for the transmissions and they were worth more than the engines were. For sure they started saving money and that means it doesnt last as long. Well, the huge fines that VW / audi has received for the scam has to be paid from somewhere. This means that the quality has deteriorated very quickly. I recently heard that the (far too weak) chain driven camshaft that also drives the oil pump of a vw (vw golf I believe) just runs in aluminum ..... unbelievable. This means that if the chain drive breaks, it only takes a few seconds and the head is damaged so that the head has to be removed. I have always been an Audi fan but the time when they built good cars ..... your 80s and 90s ..... is over. My next car no audi.
I have no idea why my 1.8T consume literally no oil at all in my B6 Audi A4
I also had a 1.8T in a '00 Audi TT and it used basically no oil, even at 250,000 miles. That was a good car before it was hit by someone.
I had the same problem with my AUDI 1.4 TFSI 2012 Model. Fortunately, I had read about a class action Law-Suit against Audi in the USA concerning this problem. They were found guilty of having used very weak material for pistons on a certain batch of Engines. Audi here in RSA told me "it was normal" for my car to be guzzling oil. I refused and made them replace all the pistons. This was a car which I bought brand-new and was only 3 years old at the time. The problem is now over.
Thanks for that info, did they have to replace it at no cost to you under the class action lawsuit?
@@Fbxbill, yes, in that US Class Action no cost was incurred by the car owners, according to what I read. I referred to this, which is why I paid nothing too.

It’s 20k miles in the UK and 18k miles for petrol engines. It’s not normal to have to top it up. It should last over a year
Instead of labeling it a scam and going ahead and using different oil weight you should have taken your car to Audi service center and tell them you want "oil consumption test" done which is free. And if Audi service center confirms your car in fact consumes unnatural amounts of oil they will fix your car at free of charge. True story because it happened to my 2010 A4 2.0T in 2016. Perhaps you didn't know that Audi had some consumption problems in some cars. They changed pistons in those cars for free.
Also, any time a customer is low on oil an Audi dealer tops it off for free.

Of course it's a scam, how much cars do you know within the warranty range that ACTUALLY WENT a and got engine rebuilds done by the tsb for this problem?... Not many... Guaranteed Audi engineers knew this wild create planned obsolescence... Manufacturers aren't expecting you to keep the car forever, it's just gotta last the warranty period and it looks good on paper that minimal maintenance should be done.

My 2009 Mazda 2 1.5 has 130.000km and does not consume any oil at all. It's been almost 10.000km since I last changed the oil and the level is still on full! My mother's 2010 Renault Clio 1.2 16v has 120.000km and consumes about 0.5-1l for every oil change (which she does at 20.000km cause she only drives to work and back on country roads, so the engine is under very little stress). I think the reason why a lot of newer cars, especially ones with small turbo engines consume a lot of oil is because manufacturers are making engines with looser tolerances in order to achieve a cheap and easy way to reduce friction inside the engine and get slightly better fuel economy and emission figures. But this, as I said, a "cheap and easy" was of doing it. Not a good way.
The old rover P4 engine 2.6 straight six was designed to use oil and this needed topping up every 1000 mile or so. Just top up and no oil changes, brilliant! Also my Daihatsu. Sirion 1.3 uses approx 200mls every 1000 mile. It has done 130000 miles. I am happy with this!
My Audi A6 4.2 V8 335hp 2005 consumed something around 1l/1000km. I'm glad I sold it.
Got the same, as long as it is normal... sort of... or cannot be improved, shall we say, then I am ok.
Why lol oil consumption is not a big deal anyway
What is the proud owner of an Audi Q5, 2014. Started eating oil to the tune of 1 quart every 400 miles! How Audi did acknowledge the problem and was willing to come up with 4/5 of the total to have the piston and rings done. The dealership however refused to cover their repair should something go wrong.
What a joke the Audi dealer was and what a joke Audi is for allowing these cars to consistently have these problems.
Vote Audi out by never buying their products ever again and let them know that. Hopefully they will suffer the same fate as Holden in Australia. I will never buy a VAG product ever again after the fuck around I have received from VW with oil consumption.
have the exact same issue with my q5 2014 .
My Audi does exactly that, mine is 2016 eats oil every 500 miles 1litre every time, got the car on 22k miles done over 100k on it and I’ve got this issue so annoyed
this is really a car from hell but taught me lots of lessons how not to invest in something you are not aware of in the first place.
That's called gambling
Before owning an Audi I never heard of a car even burning any oil.
Not "normally" anyways.
Grab the owner manual, let us know if it’s true or check the dip stick
@@lasthope703
"dip stick" yeah you wish. Not anymore on the newer audis. Even my 2014 a4 didn't come with a dip stick. Had to buy one.
lasthope703 there’s no dip stick in it
My 2015 a5 doesn't, matter of fact the oil was full when I changed the oil for its regular 10k miles
I have a 2013 3.0tfsi with no oil consumption issues. 7l go in and 7l come out 5,000 miles later
7 liters is a lot of oil but hey it works right?
@@jamesmedina2062 spec is 6.8l... 7 wont hurt
My 2003 Audi a4b6 1.9 tdi does not consume any oil at all.
I have a 2018 Audi A8L 3.0 Quattro and I am now getting this add 1qt oil message every roughly 1000miles. When I had my 2017 Audi A8 4.0, this issue never came up.
burn oil keeps exhaust lubed :))
and GDI keeps the intake nice and lubed up... like dirty bbq grill
you dont need to correct your english :) confidence is a better image than perfect english - language isn't THAT important, if you know what you're talking about :)
His english is good enough, a lot of idiots are talking because they think they are special! Do not forget boys, for some of you is the first language, for this guy is the secondary! Most of you can’t say a fuck old in a foreign language. Keep calm and carry on mate, you doing a very good job!✌️
@@florescuvalentin6447 true bro , knowledge is the real treasure here, language is just a medium to pass the info.
Thank you for this very informative video.
I use Amzoil in my Mk7 golf. I don’t think I’ve ever had issues with consumption. I’m gonna go check now though.
lol I was thinking the same thing, same car
I'm gonna be using Castrol Edge since my owner's manual recommends Castrol. It's under warranty still.
Indirect Injection ftw
Crazy. On my old 1.4 TSI from 2006 never drinks oil. I use 5W/30
is it the 120hp engine?
I can tell you about why the oil problems exists on VW AG engines.
Lack of running in process in the first kilometres of the car when new. No matter how close to perfectly round the cylinders are drilled at the factory, there are minute imperfections in the cylinder wall. By using top gear on the motorway and going from 2000rpm (90km/h) to 3000rpm (160km/h) rapidly (full throttle) and then letting the car compression brake back down to 90 or 100 km/h, the rings will be compressed under load, and press firmly against the cyclinder wall. You car might use 0.25 to 0.5 L in the run in process, but after that, no / minimal / usual consumption (until piston rings worn out).
Thought I got a lemon 2011 a4...nope.theyre all lemons. Well I guess I'll do myself a favor and put in new piston rings...after I put the new vacuum pump on.after I fix the broken clips that hold my coils together. Oh yeah I'm gonna need another quart of oil after I drive around to buy my parts..
thats what its like huh
i feel you. my A3 requires me half of me free time and half of the distance driven, just to keep owning it. it makes no sense as a car.
I've check the car, yesss it's true.. The mechanics remind me to topup the oil. I thought he's lying. Lol. Why my previous Honda car didn't have this issues?
Japanese car.💪💪💪💪💪💪
I carry 4 litres of Magnatec in the boot just in case, in my Nissan Leaf.
I carry a gallon of engine coolant in my air cooled Porsche - at least in my dreams.
I've owned 6 Audis in the last 22 years and for the most part they are pretty good with oil. My 2016 S6 goes through a quart (little less than a liter) of oil every 5,000 miles but that's when I'm changing it anyway. It's tuned, so I expect a bit more oil consumption. My 2010 Audi A6 3.0T had major issues with oil consumption. That was consuming about a quart of oil every 600 miles. I redid the rings and the problem stopped.
He is definitely right about Audi saying that is normal in the owner's manual.
Very good video. Well done!
Seen a couple of your vids...where are you from? UK here where VW, Audi, BMW, Merc are all very popular. Asian brands just don't have the same style - even though I know they're probably better quality. I don't wish to drive a bath tub 😁
He is from Romania. He also have a romanian chanel where he teaches romanians about car maintanance mostly.
my Civic was made in the UK in Swindon and it is not a bathtub but was not refined either as they were cutting costs on my model, unlike the pricier Type R. The Accords are way nicer overall but are bigger. Why don't they sell Accords in England?? I don't get it. You guys don't get and like Lexus cars? And what about Peugeot and Renault? They are more reliable than Germans
Lmao I sold my 07 a4 for an 09 wrx because of this and other reliability issues
Even the new models seem to consume oil ... it s not realy fixed
My 2009 s3 was like this... my 2017 burns nothing... it is a scam
Im going to buy a A3. Now im sure i neet one of 2014+
