TBM 900 - IFR to KSAT

- Needed to get to plane over to San Antonio for a bit of maintenance, so I managed to get in some nice IFR time in the clouds. This video is relatively short and to-the-point, with most of the radio calls kept in the video.

Hi Jason great video ! Very detailed
Just sat down at my computer to play some Flight Sim and fly the TBM and I saw you uploaded this video! Such an amazing airplane!
hey me too ! :)
How different a light jet, like M2 or honda jet compared to TBM
@Callen Adan Yup, been watching on flixzone for since november myself :)
@Callen Adan Yea, have been using Flixzone for since december myself =)
Great short flight!!
A+ video. thanks for sharing.
I love TBM’s!
Great video thank you.
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Greased the landing
Thanks!!!
Great video Jason!
Thanks much! Hope you guys are doing well!
You got a great shout out from One Taco, thank you for Foreflight.
Thanks so much! I found that video you mentioned, good stuff!
nice landing
Nice flight and landing capt
Thanks!!!
And this is why I haven't flown in a few weeks. So much IFR
Nice
Hi great video! What is the real operating (doc+voc) costs for 900?
obviously depends on how much you fly, but < $1k. Insurance is getting way more expensive recently though, and becoming a bigger part of the cost. That can be 20k-80k/year
@@JasonFlies thanks , I am still trying to do correct choice what is better option for my family of 5pax for endurance/safety/money between M500/600/TBM/SF50G2....
I haven't found any answer from the net. But this might be the place.
Why does the prop reverse direction when switching from low idle to high idle and vice versa?
it doesn't change direction, just has a little less power coming in at low idle. You have to actually go into the "reverse" mode to make the pitch of the prop negative - but the prop always turns in the same direction regardless. You may be seeing a frame-rate effect from the camera making it look weird?
Jason what FLC climb speed do you normally use?
140 at first, then work it up to 170. Once I climb high enough for that to be Mach 0.4 then I use that Mach
@@JasonFlies Thank you.
@@JasonFlies I have an unrelated odd question. The descent seems like black magic. Plugin typical Vertical Speed values.
I wanted to descend at 3 degrees so I did the trig. Instead of calculating every time I created PDF lookup tables. One set is for the TOD calculation. The other two sets are for Rate of Descent adjustments. The TOD calculation is fast. The first set of Rate of Descent columns makes an easy range to get a conservative VS (better too soon than late). For example; GS=268, between 260 and 270 so use 270, 1,433 feet so round up to 1500VS. Works perfectly in flight sim. The next set of columns are standard values for the 100 foot VS increments. For example, continuing the example above 1500VS is fine but I speed up above 282.6GS I must use 1600VS, if I slow below 263.8 a 1400VS should be used.
No calculator needed, no rule of thumb math that unfortunately descends too late (TOD), and unfortunately results in a vertical speed that is too slow.
Rule of thumb examples:
TOD for 20,000 feet would be 60 nm. It is really 62.8nm (too late).
Rate of Descent for 300GS is 1500VS. It is really 1,592FPM or 1600VS (too slow).
So the tables are rounded to one place for presentation and practicability. But the formulas in the cells are very precise. I use the tangent of 3 degrees and 6076.11549 feet in a nautical mile. Sort of like a HSI. Give the pilot precise deflection but let the pilot know, "do not follow needles". Rate of Descent for 1600VS is 301.5GS, hey use 300. Rate of Descent for 1700VS is 320.3GS, 320 is just fine.
What do you think?

Is it hard to keep the nose up during flare on tbm?
Not as long as you trim properly. If not, the nose feels REALLY heavy.
How is the noise in the cabin?
Loud enough to require headsets, at least for the long term...
