I firmly believe Eminem to be one of the biggest drivers of change in talking about mental health and considering the effects of mental illness. I'm a psychologist, currently training to be a psychotherapist and to me, his portrayals of mental health issues are often as educational as they are entertaining.
One of the first tasks I was asked to carry out when I started studying psychology at university was 'Define Intelligence, and do not turn the page until you have a concrete definition'. After about half an hour of wracking my brains coming up with a 'catch-all' definition, I turned the page.... and discovered there is no unanimously agreed upon definition.
I say that to say this: IQ tests, while they are a reliable predictor of self-reported and objectively apparent lifetime success, are not necessarily a measure of intelligence (in terms of how 'smart' somebody is). Eminem, academically was an underachiever. I'm not sure what he'd score on an IQ test but I would guess it would fall short of genius level (roughly 142+).
When you juxtapose this with his undeniably brilliant artistry, in words, acting, storytelling, communication marketing, poetry, philosophy, culture shaping and composition (among many other things), the only conclusion is that he is one of the greatest minds to ever grace the earth.
So my point is that Eminem is probably the best example I've come across (and I do look for these things) of the invalidity of IQ tests in measuring what is colloquially referred to as 'intelligence'.
While it may seem comedic to some to suggest it, I place Eminem's effect on his contemporary culture to be similar to other great historical philosophers, T.S. Elliot, Cicero, Plato etc. - and while it may seem comedic to some to place a 'rapper' in this company, take heed of the argument I made above and answer honestly: is this a collection of three geniuses and a 'rapper'? Or is this simply a collection of four geniuses?
    I rest my case.

Iq tests only test for specific things. Mostly things that can be memorizing, or learned by route. There is a difference in memorizing the multiplication tables and understanding how multiplication works.
There are some great minds that didn't get a formal, or even adequate education. Some of them still shined with brilliance.
Unfortunately too many fall through the cracks and get lost. A high score on an iq still doesn't always translate to successful.

    • @beautifulchlorophyll2285
      @beautifulchlorophyll2285 13 часов назад

@@void5613 Well, first we have to define what we mean by 'successful'. For example, one person's idea of being successful may be to have a large family, another person's idea of successful may be to make lots of money, another may be to become famous.
The reason we use self-reported measures of success alongside objectively apparent measures is because the term itself is subjective. If a person claims their life's goal is to make lots of money, we can look at how their wealth status is compared to others within their context, if one says it is to have a large family we can look at how large their family is compared to others within their social context, this will help us to understand whether they have been 'successful' in their stated goal. We also measure lifetime happiness as self-reported, that is, how happy one claims to be with one's own achievements.
IQ testing, in essence, is a measure of problem solving ability, the score can be, but is not usually, affected by memorisation as the types of stimuli used in IQ testing is usually live problem solving rather than addition/subtraction/multiplication etc. - it's the ability to identify patterns in live data and predict outcomes and act accordingly.
We can't claim that IQ is a direct measure of intelligence because we can't define intelligence, however, we can look at IQ scores against self-reported and objectively identifiable lifetime success and say with some degree of certainty (about as much certainty as is scientifically possible in the field of psychology) that IQ scores have a strong correlation with achieving personal goals.
The relationship is not causal, but it's a very strong correlation, above +7, which essentially means if you can consistently score highly on IQ tests, you are very likely to also be able to achieve your goals in life and if you score more lowly on an IQ test, you are less likely to be able to.
This is dependent on a meritocratic system however, which in the western world we are currently in the process of moving away from, in favor of a cast system where certain groups are favored/ unfavored over others based on characteristics such as identity, socio-economic background and social status, so it may not hold true in the future if current trends continue.

first, you are right about pronouncing Dido's name. *Fun fact* the course of this song is a sample of Dido's song "Thank you." that Eminem heard on the radio and then coalbed with her for "Stan".
Bonnie has a few references. Bonnie (of Bonnie & Clyde) was a couple that was notorious bank robbers. Eminem has a son called 97' Bonnie & Clyde. Eminem has called his daughter Bonnie because he would do anything to protect and take care of her.
The Ronnie that"stan referenced in this song was Eminem's uncle whom both introduced Em to rap and took his life. Both EM and Ronnie were close in age and had a relationship almost like they were brothers. The death of Em's uncle's suicide greatly affected him in a way that was the fuel to really pursue rap seriously.
Rawkus was a record label called rawkus records, which Eminem was a part of before he met Dre.
In the uncensored version of stan's last verse, the screaming is from a 9-1-1 call of a woman being murdered.
the kid that play's Matthew(Stan's bother) is Nathan, Eminems real life brother.

Stanley poured peroxide, not alcohol over his head to turn his hear blonde. Rawkus was a record label Eminem made song prior to sign with Dr. Dre. Ronnie was is uncle who committed suicide. Bonnie as in "Bonnie & Clyde" which Eminem made into a song where his baby girl Hallie Jade is the Bonnie to his Clyde. Mental health songs have been around since atleast the sixties from songs that I can recall listening to but one of my favorites is REM's "Everybody Hurts." Check it out if you've never seen it. It hits home so much more now after what so many people have been going through since the CoVid pandemic struck

I have watched quite a few of your videos. Your singing voice is really good. You may just sing some examples but from what I have heard it is almost perfect pitch. I am absolutely no expert, but I have played violin for 15 years and people say that is an instrument that reps the human voice the best. This may mean nothing to you, which I understand especially from a random person, but your singing voice is just so good! Its so on key!

He was the star of final destination, the first one where he gets the premonition that the plane is going to crash. I agree he did a phenomenal job as "Stan" in this video and dido was great as well and her singing and lending this hook to this song when it was part of another song of hers.
Im 45 now so i grew up in the glory years of hip hop and im so thankful for all the amazing artists that changed my life and inspired me in healthy ways , well healthier then Stanley here that's for sure. My two favorite artists are Nas and Eminem but I have a long list of amazing rappers from 90s ans early 2000s hip hop when it was selling more records then any music. Bone thugs N Harmony broke a very long beatles record for most singles sold with Crossroads. This was before the internet downloading and streaming days where you had to save your money and head to sam the record man or sunrise or hmv to get your favorite cassettes then came CDs and i got into hip hop still in cassette stage but CDs were creeping in and N.w.A albums and ice cube when he went solo albums were like 45.99 labelled imports lol. I miss those days just blazing and listening to bone thugs or Mobb Deep, Big L and may many others. But great reaction to a timeless song that actually got the term stan in the dictionary

Yeah, they seemingly censored everything relating to suicide, in addition to all words that aren't considered polite... which makes no sense in a song where the suicide is a big aspect of the song's meaning. It's like taking Harry Potter and censoring everything magical. I'm so happy to have grown up in a country without censorship. We were "allowed" the full experience of things and if something was inappropriate for our age, we were just kept from it all-together. This isn't a children's song, so it makes no sense to censor it from adults to be child-friendly when the content itself is inherently not.
