The line "I'm so old my career is a teenager" hurt more than it should have.
SmarterEveryDay *sigh, me too. But what really hurt at time was walking around RUclips Australia and trying to ignore the reality of Creators and Community people all being young enough to be my kids. Still had a great time, but got a few confused looks LOL
SmarterEveryDay , hah yeah, I get that feeling.. but on the other hand, if you look at it from another perspective, it's also quite impressive! Overall an experienced, wise sage, is more impressive and respectable than an enthusiastic but inexperienced youth..
I do myself enjoy the allure and feeling of wide-eyed youth and freedom.. but it also saddens me when people and society in general seems to forget the values of wisdom and experience that come with age and instead devalue and discard "being old" as undesirable in comparison to being youthful and pretty.. of course I acknowledge the preferable physical benefits of better health and energy in youth versus old age..
BUT if you're taking about a "career", which is more related to mental knowledge and experience, then I'd say the "older" it is the better! So appreciate your "teenage career!' ^_^
(Btw, love your videos!)
I've been working towards my education for so long that it is becoming a teenager. That's... really... really.. odd. Whatever.
Hmm, not sure how to feel about it, given that my current JOB (as in not career but specific employment position) will be old enough to buy booze next year...
I am so old my career is middle aged. So there.
I can't wait until when, in 40 years or so, John is a recluse living off the land in some remote forest, gruffly dispensing wisdom to passing travelers but otherwise completely removed from society.
I don't think it's going to take me forty years, to be honest. :) -John
I’d like to think that even though he does indeed live off the land and is indeed a total recluse he will still somehow be able to get videos onto RUclips.
John is Luke Skywalker confirmed
I'm thinking more like he'll be the Garrison Keillor of this generation...
John is going to be Tom Bombadil?
Who else would love to see John nerd out over his garden? I think nerdfightaria needs (if John's ok with it) a tour.
YES! Yes please! Oh, please!!

Oh boy, that is important to remind myself!
Thanks, John

I’ve been taking a break from Twitter (and all social media, but Twitter was my biggest obsession) and I can relate to a lot of what you’re saying, even though I’m only 19 and maybe not quite old enough (or masculine enough?) to be an old man yelling at a cloud. There's a lot of time that I’ve gained back; I’ve read so many marvelous books including Roxanne Gay’s Hunger, Joyce’s Ulysses, and also your book Turtles all the way down. I’ve listened to audiobooks and podcasts, discovered new RUclips channels and rediscovered running.
But I’ve also sacrificed the friendships that I kept up with using social media. I’m more isolated than I was a few months ago. It’s hard to strike a balance between the good and the bad with social media, and maybe that’s how we know it’s an authentic human creation.
I really like that you acknowledge both the gains and the losses you've experienced. Very interesting! -John
This has largely been my experience as well. I will occasionally go social media free (typically by blocking all my typical time wasting websites while I gear up for finals). Every time I am amazed at how much more productive I am with other things. I also really love taking a break from the more stupid aspects of social media--there is always someone posting annoying things or selling something or sharing stories that aren't true or getting into worthless arguments. But I do miss being able to sort of keep up with what's happening in the lives of friends who live far away or whose schedules don't mesh with mine, and I also miss the ease of sharing news in my own life with a large number of people all in one go. The cons have had me on the cusp of quitting facebook, but the pros keep pulling me back in.
My twitter got banned.

oooh this is good. yes.
Each of us should tend our garden.
Especially if it has spinach, that's good stuff.
I grow spinach! It's VERY good, so I'd agree :)
Lawrence Calablaster oh man. yes, agreed.
My mother is the pickiest eater in our house, and when she has a girls' night with her friends my dad and I will have an "everything mom hates but we love" dinner. So liver, wilted spinach, and roast new potatoes, among other things. I'd literally eat spinach on anything savory, it is the magical ingredient that makes everything better.
Spinach is great
I don't get why it has become famous in TV shows as the leafy vegetable no one likes
And mine does! Two spinach plants and many yet-to-sprout spinach seeds! -John
Your shirt is an excellent Sky.
Thanks ;) -John

The video was so good there was a moment of silence I dedicated for it, and then I saw this comment and I laughed so hard.

I’ve seen this video at least 4 times and I will never get over the story of John’s defanged teenage rebellion
You could've uploaded a garden tour and I would have been content, but in true vlogbrothers style you gave me something to think about AND a mini garden tour. I know it sort of goes against what you were saying here, but I hope you'll share pictures of your garden as it grows! :')
Now I really want a garden tour!
+
+
I'm hoping for a garden tour as well :D
Honestly I am more happy thinking about John Green gardening and being content than seeing John Green tweeting knowing that there is an old man yelling at could element to it.

thank you, my English needs improvement
Thank you for changing. 🤗
I love imagining John peacefully and happily gardening ❤
Chirpy bird outtro was the best
that was my favorite part of the video
I sometimes forget that John is a really famous author until I leave the house and see his books out in the wild.
I just know him as the guy that makes RUclips videos. :P
I feel so proud of your garden John
This Cloud certainly does offer a great deal of Shade.
"He who has a garden and a library wants for nothing." - Cicero
Happy planting, John! :^)
"I'm so old that my career is a teenager." oh god I just realized I have a new fear in life. 😳 No but for real, my mom always used to say "50 is the new 40!" and then "60 is the new 50!" and I'm sure she'll say "70 is the new 60!" when she gets up there. Aging blows in a lot of ways, but what comes with age is wisdom, and that combined with a relatively optimistic outlook can allow you to accomplish so many beautiful things, no matter your age. Keep crushing it in the garden, John! ❤️
CulpFiction i disagree. When you are realy old you have 0 responsability and you can get away with everything.
I guess I completely disagree with that. To me, the older you get, the _more_ responsibility you have. Supporting a family, being a model citizen, using the powers you've gained and learned from the years to create good, meaningful, and responsible change to the world, and so on. When you're young, you can afford to be selfish and carefree because nobody necessarily depends on you. But the older you get, the more people do.
I'm 36. Talking to a 22-year-old yesterday, who was all: "I'm old, I remember when we had a VCR!". To which I replied: "I remember _before_ VCRs." xD
“The older I get, the more I question the idea that wisdom comes with age” - HL Mencken
Who are you, Gatsby?
Or Candide?
Even as a teen girl, I've been an old man yelling at clouds. You always raise quite good points, John. You are inspiring, and even as someone who nearly can't stand outdoor chores, you've made me want to start a garden. Thank you, darling, for being inspirational, relatable, and not forgetting to be awesome (even when you yell at clouds)
this video made me tear up and I'm not sure why, but I am just so incredibly happy at the mental image of John being able to get out and dig in the dirt in the sun and grow something meaningful. He deserves it.
I feel like both Hank and John are kind of like modern day philosophers
That's such a beautiful garden. 💜
Thanks! Making it involved many tons of wood chips and compost, but I am pleased with the results so far! -John
OHHHH I cannot explain to you how much I enjoyed that little story about your dad and the NIN album (I rocked it too, same age). So good 😂! Some parents just have moves so good you don’t know where they came from...I hope to be a that kind of parent to my little guy. Thanks for sharing that memory, and so much more, with us!
I really hope John reads this.
As a teenager that grew up wachting your channeI and reading your books, I can assure you that you are by far the best describer of the struggle and the beauty of being a teenager, I am turning 21 next week, so I guess my teenage years are officially over. And I couldn’t be any happier that I had the chance to have an influence and a friend such as yourself. DFTBA.
Aw man I want to be content in a garden too
I’m a fan of John greens eyebrows

That last clip of the garden where you can hear the birds brings me such peace and comfort. I can only imagine how good it must feel being there.
being in the # notification squad after the "check check check" bit feels a lot more nuanced and less like a very fun club
Those few seconds of garden footage with the bird chirping in the background were beautiful and calming for my soul. I'm glad you have your garden, a place where you can find that same mental space on a longer timescale.
Following your Hufflepuff heart to the garden, I see. 💛🌱🖤
John Green loving his garden is one of the best things and I don’t know why, but it makes me really happy
"I'm so old that my career is a teenager" is a pretty great quote.
You, as always, put so eloquently what all of us of "a certain age" are feeling...the great disconnect...and a yearning for more but less. Thank you John for the words and the reminders and enjoy the dirt. It grounds us while we scream at clouds.
If all the good people, calm people, rational people walked away from Social Media because of the hate-filled giant squids of anger trying to ruin it for the rest of us, then where does our discourse go?
+
A fair question
the dark web.....
OOOOOoooooh....
The facetious side of me burns to respond, "HOW ABOUT IRL?!?"
The ass would retort (or add?), "But... that's where the good, calm, rational people are already having discourse."
The troll says, "There are no good, calm, or rational people left. Everyone lost their minds on that social media crap." ;o)
Maybe that's what has already happened? Eh?
Maybe the belief that more discourse is better for the world isn't true, and even if it is, maybe it's not so much better that effective people need to spend their time doing it.
Maybe social media is like gardening; the weeds keep coming, but if you make room and plant good things with care, there can be great beauty.
This is a little disconcerting as a new creator TRYING to get involved with this world... Your wisdom is making me conscious of things I should be aware of in the future.
Levi Hildebrand the f are u talking about
Not sure what you mean?
Levi Hildebrand
My take is that they are belittling your observation that while John is stepping back from the social internet, you're leaning into it.
An astute observation from you, Levi. Best of luck to you
Yeah that does seem like what it might be eh? Thanks for the clarification and the kind words :D
I am a bit envious of your garden. But more importantly, I’m happy that it brings you joy.
I love this. Thank you, John, for once again sharing with us. I understand so much of what you mean.
Also, gardening is great and so relaxing. It is nice that you have taken it up and it is jiving so well with you. It is nice to know that as you are becoming less vocal online you have a beautiful family and a lovely garden, and that you are content. :)
John can I just say as a young individual you inspire me so much. And Hank he’s really cool and I love scishow
Really glad I'm not the only one who doesn't understand Snapchat
I don't undestand Snapchat because I never want to understand Snapchat. ;)
I don't understand how you make topics so mundane become so profound. Honestly, there's videos you and Hank have posted from 2011 I still think about on a daily basis.
I want to thank you for being on the social internet. Your presence has so positively impacted myself and countless others. But while I would be saddened by your leaving, I would understand if you needed to. Your mental health is a million times more valuable. My mentor always says, "you can't pour from an empty glass."
Thank you again. I like this idea. I think I'm going to start implementing it.
Also, I totally remember that episode
Just turned 40, right with ya John. Except I have fake grass, but real trees - I'm sure there's a metaphor in there somewhere.
My mom has developed an obsession for gardening recently. I didn't consider myself a "garden person" but now I kinda like it ♥
That's a great garden! What do you cultivate?
Wisdom, I think.
Lots of stuff--from peppers to spinach to collard greens to onions to carrots. And many tomato plants! -John
I hope that you will instill into Henry and Alice a deep, undying affection for mid-summer eating cherry tomatoes straight off of the vine.
Waking up at noon because there's no school, heading outside in my pajamas and popping like 20 cherry tomatoes in my mouth for breakfast was one of my favorite things to do when I was little
From the look of the mounds, he's using people as fertilizer. Things should grow quite well.
Is it right next to the fields of expertise?
Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your garden! What a lovely space you've helped create. I hope you continue to enjoy it immensely.
I have had to stop following a lot of people who write about politics because it made me yell at everything. I do, however, enjoy seeing the good things in life, like DogRates, so I have not entirely quit social media. I put a solar powered fountain in my bird bath yesterday, and have laughed several times at its fitful spurts of fountainy exuberance. It's the little things that get you through. Oh--and I do NOT want to know what is 'developmentally appropriate' for me at this stage of life. I'm sure it's neither bird-bath fountain giggles nor DogRates bliss, and I'm not about to give them up.
"This time checking will be important." I. FEEL. THIS. SO. DEEPLY. JOHN. THANK. YOU.
Hey John, what's in your garden? Are you planting flowers, or vegetables, or something else..?
Given it looks like a series of graves the 'something else' option worries me.
About 10 years ago I was prescribed anti-depressants, and I remember describing the feeling as like being pulled slowly but firmly out of a bog by something all-encompassing like a harness. About a year ago I deleted facebook, and the experience was similar.
I love you man. Have a great day.
What do you grow in your garden?
plants i think, not sure though.
+
+
You have a beautiful garden. I look forward to the day I get to have one again. There is nothing quite like wandering out the back door and picking a few cherry tomatoes or pulling fresh beets out of the ground moments before you wash, slice, and prepare them for dinner. I add my voice to the group that would absolutely be down for a garden tour.
When I think of one day owning a house I actually really do get super excited to have a garden. Also to have a big enough kitchen to bake bread. Mind you, I'm not that young in internet years (27), but still. I want to grow basil, tomatoes, green beans, and cucumbers at least. I've helped my dad grow most of those items and I think I can pull it off.
Not sure what your current living situation is, but you could probably do the basil now if you want to grow it in a pot. I grew a basil plant in a pot out on my apartment patio/balcony. Mine grew big enough that when I harvested the plant at the end of the season, I filled three gallon-sized freezer bags with basil leaves! As long as you have somewhere sunny you can set it, basil will do just fine in a pot.
thatjillgirl I'm afraid it'll get too much direct light outside where I am because my 2 doors have nothing obstructing the sun either sunrise to noon or noon to sunset. And I have no appropriate ledges or tables inside. I'll probably start basil when we eventually have a new apartment. Tomatoes thrive in pots in my area too. Both my dad and cousin are growing from seed this year. One has heirlooms, the other has grape tomatoes.
I'm glad you're enjoying your garden! Our lilac has just started blooming and it smells like happiness. I'm really looking forward to finishing my final exams so I can spend a whole day pulling weeds and raking leaves under the lilac and inhaling joy.
Is Henry trying to wangle 2 strawberries out of you by saying he'll get scurvy? It reminded me of that cheese strings advert where the little rapscallion used tip-ex to try and pretend he had a calcium deficiency.
Science with Katie
No the problem is trying to convince him to eat strawberries at all. I've encountered a few kids like this, mostly my young cousins, they pick a food and don't want to eat anything else or they don't want to eat anything of certain textures, etc. It can be a challenge then to get them to eat foods they previously loved.
When I was about that old there were a couple of things I refused to eat but since I ate everything else, my parents were never really bothered by it.
I’m happy to see John in his garden. I wish for my hopefully middle aged self to take up something like beekeeping or flower arranging. Something that creates, but takes care, and gentleness. And time. Also you’ve gotten one step closer to reverting from the disgusting lawn we all have to a system that has a use.
You are one of the best wrighters ever.
you made an edit to this comment and still misspelt writers?
Brent Shuter I normally wouldn't point this out, but since your comment corrected someone else: *misspelled.
Brent Shuter Maybe JeDe Ryn wanted to compliment John's noted ship building skills.
Mudblood Princess Both are correct, actually. One is British English and the other is American English. www.superdream.com/news-blog/misspelt-or-misspelled-7-differences-between-british-and-american-english
thatjillgirl oh! Thanks! I didn't know that.
It’s a beautiful garden. Thank you John
Was the shirt color intentional?
Madi probably
I read that as “colour shirt international” and my brain struggled for a second.
It was! -John
vlogbrothers wonderful! Love the care you put into all aspects of your videos 💖
Words literally cannot describe my love for this man
Dude. You tell the story of many of us out here. Of all ages (including "middle age.") Enjoy the garden. 🐢
yay for gardening! i'm finding my love for picking green stuff in dirt, too. last year my strawberries were flawless. so nice.
I just turned 20 today. As I stand on the precipice of a new decade, and the one that is supposed to represent adulthood, I do feel the pressure to do what is “developmentally appropriate”. But it is tough to balance the pressure to do work and finish school with the desire to make videos with my friends and enjoy the last shreds of my teenage years. I’m worried I’m going to lose the childish parts of myself I really like: the curiosity, compassion, and the desire to have fun. Let’s hope 30s Nate has some better advice for 20s Nate (because I definitely have some good advice for teenage Nate).
As I've entered young adulthood I've found it helpful to remember that maturity and responsibility do not have to be mutually exclusive with the good parts of childishness. We don't have to pretend that fun things aren't fun just because adults are "supposed to be" serious. And naturally, the vlogbrothers have been constant examples to me that silliness and wisdom can coexist and often complement one another.
laurachel I agree! I think another important thing for me has been embracing how some new things may be fun. I don’t think my idea of fun has stayed the same even in the last 5 years, so learning to accept that change with open arms and not begrudgingly is a good thing.
Speaking from the point of view of someone who is well past the precipice of adulthood, I feel I can say with authority that you can't help growing up but you can help growing old. When I was 18 or so I hated the idea of getting older because I thought that with responsibility I would have to never have fun or laugh again and my whole life would be about working and paying bills and cleaning the house. Turns out, that just like the rest of your life you have experienced so far, it is what you want it to be. If you like the childish parts of yourself, keep them. I like to think I have kept mine :) :) ''Adulthood' ( beyond what is biological) and ''what is expected of adults'' is very heavily influence by our society and culture. This means, it's what ppl think it should be, not necessarily what happens..... Just be yourself, you'll be an adult doing it no matter what. You've been doing it for a few years already, biologically speaking....
Sandra Turk thank you! Some very sage advice. It can seem daunting now but I do think it will work itself out in time.
Nate and Noah Try Life it will. Just remember you don't have to do everything at once or solve all your problems at once. Goodness knows no one else has.
The best John Green video yet! It is so nice to relate to almost every word... especially gardening! Thanks John!
But what are you growing? I'm curious what needs that much space around it. My dad's garden when I was growing up was literally a lump of dirt tall enough for roots that he just dumped on top of our sandy lawn, maybe 8 ft. square.
I also have found peace in my garden, much more peace than being on my phone. I'm not middle aged, but I am grieving the loss of my daughter and being in a beautiful garden feels much more loving than being on my phone ❤❤❤
"Social" media.
Never have bunny ears around a word been more appropriate!
I've been watching these videos for awhile and for some reason I think this one is my favorite
What about...old cloud yells at man? Really switches the perspective, now doesn’t it?
that's just rain
Awkwar d in Russia, cloud yells at you
Really does
Well there is the Glow Cloud from Welcome to Nightvale, but I don't know if that's what you were talking about.
Awkwar d Sounds like thunder.
but....But I like veggies.....
John Green I AM SO happy you love your garden and that you have a place to enjoy yourself and listen to the persistent chirping of chickadees
Where's my notification team?
I don't have notifications on, but I do obsessively check for new vlogbrothers videos, so it's kinda the same
My wedding photo hashtag (2 photos) was "Bride Yells at Cloud" because it was raining.
I never watched the Simpsons growing up, so the memes are a little lost on me.
i like your garden, John. My wife and I live in an apartment, but managed to get into a local community garden program, so down the road we have a little plot that we tend, and grow flowers and vegetables alongside out neighbors. it's a great place to be with nature and see the progress of your work and relax.
Am i first?
Should it matter?
I hope not.
It matters little, if at all. Being first is actually very anticlimactic in any situation.
i am fox Does it? Probably not.
Should it? That's upon us :)
No, no
“I’m so old that my career is a teenager.” I love this observation John.
Ah, the beautiful bird chipping sounds at the end of the video. I wish it had continued longer.
So, that's where John Green buries his enemies.
John is finally fighting the good fight against his lawn like I've always wanted him to.
Oh my gosh John I LOVE gardening!!! Please keeps us posted on its progress and maybe what you learn! Nerdfightaria continues to always welcome all types of nerds
One of my favorite more recent videos, John. It may not matter in the grand number of followers and fans, but I love to hear that human side of any online person. Happy gardening!
Love the garden John! And I would also love for you to share more of that passion with us in video form, but I also understand if your garden must remain your own private escape from the eyes of the Internet. Happy planting!
Your garden is lovely. The ease my urge to adult, I repotted my plants last weekend. Gardening is developmentally appropriate for quite a few ages.
“I’m so old that my Carrier is a teenage.” That is going on my list of favorite quotes.
I've started tomatoes for the first time this spring. Thanks for sharing your quiet spaces
That garden is beautiful John, you should be proud of it!
I love gardening. I totally understand your obsession and encourage more activity there while including your children and other loved ones. Thanks for sharing!
im so happy that you are gardening! gardening is good for the soul ❤
Every so often John makes a thoughtful video I feel the need to send to my dad.
I can't wait to see what your garden looks like in 2 months or so!
I would have gladly watched and listened to another 16 seconds of your garden, John
Old man yells at cloud is such an evergreen story, there's always another old man, and always always always another cloud
The like to dislike ratio on this video is amazing! Thank you so much John for sharing your wonderful thoughts! And thank you to your parents for helping to create such a wonderful soul who inspires me on a regular basis 💕
I’m sitting here nursing my newborn son and I am so envious of your garden. Mine has been abandoned to the weeds for lack of time to tend it.
A garden is a wonderful thing, because planting is an inherently hopeful act and everyone needs a little hope.
I've come back to this video a couple of times for various reasons, and the last thing John says before signing off always strikes me as quite poetic for some reason.
"Know that I'm probably here, and quite content" just resonates with me.
Gardens are the BEST! over the past 4 years, my 19-22 year old self has learned to love herbs, their healing properties and all the wonders of food security through gardens/seed sharing ect. Now I'm a total garden nerd!
sending good vibes to John’s garden
