- This video shows you how to fix a leaky toilet. This is particularly for Ideal Standard flush and Ideal Standard toilet inlet valve. The video explains the possible reasons for a leaky toilet and their fixes. It explains the following.
1) How to replace flush valve seal.
2) How to replace inlet valve diaphragm.
I bought the flush valve seal online from "fixthebog" on amazon. Link www.amazon.co....
I bought the inlet valve diaphragm from a local plumbing merchant as whatever I ordered online did not fit properly.
Id spend ages trying to find a guide that matched my toilet, this was the one!! All fixed!!🎉
Literally one of the most genuinely practical and helpful videos on RUclips! Thank you
Hi I have the same issue can anyone advise what part do buy 🙏
Thanks so much for posting this. Both seals were damaged on mine after 12 years. The edges of the flush seal had crumbled away over time, and the diaphragm, although visually sound, had a pin hole in it. The flush seal was out of stock in 5 places I tried, but my local Wolseley came up trumps for both items. The replacement flush seal is actually white & the diaphragm is the same minus the little ribs. The SVO1967 flush mechanism has apparently been discontinued now, but the seals can still be sourced at the moment. I bought spare items just in case. Both work perfectly. Top work sir! 👏👏👏
You, sir, are a life-saver. The toilet was driving me nuts as it would be constantly re-filling (mostly at night, for some reason - I think it was doing it deliberately to annoy me! 😄). I finally got around to fixing after seeing my latest water bill! 😬 I'd always thought that plumbing was some dark art, but this was so simple to do, so thank you, thank you, you've probably saved me a small fortune over the next few years. 👍🏻
Thanks very much for the info! I'm usually D.I.Y. (destroy it yourself) but I've successfully fixed the issue without calling in a plumber. Great job, thanks again.
Honestly the best video I found to help fix my annoying toilet! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and explain every step so concisely.
Just did mine.... very helpful vid
Took a photo to my local plumbers merchant and came away with the repair kit £10. Worked perfectly.👍👍
Mate you’re a legend. Our ensuite toilet has been overflowing like this for god knows how long. At least a year since we moved in i guess, but these past few months its been really troubling me to the point of losing sleep over it and being reluctant to call a plumber to pay plumber prices for what i assumed would be a simple fix. I had already tried the first fix which didn’t work but the second solution did the charm so thank you so much for providing the knowledge and giving me the confidence to fix it. I can now sleep without hearing a distant trickle/ hissing noise!!
Where did you get the diaphragm from? I bought some a while ago that weren't exactly as needed. Hard to source these, your help would be awesome. Thanks
This video was perfect for me. My cistern has exactly the same parts inside, and it clearly showed me what I needed to do to stop the water dribbling down the back of the pan. Parts ordered and now easily fitted, having followed this video. 👍
Same lol
Same here, brilliant!! 👍🏻
The water is dribbling down the ‘front’ of our toilet pan would this be the same issue ?
Hi from where you got the right washer? I tried everywhere even online but couldn't find the correct version of it. All are the flatter ones. Thanks
@@cherylwilliams4245 its just how your pan directs flush flow
Thanks for your video! Its 2024 and it helped me fix my toilet! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. Your toilet was the only one on you tube that seemed to resemble mine so very glad I stumbled across it.
Thank you for making this video. As you say I've struggled to find this information online, was fearing I'd have to remove the whole cistern and replace the part. Saved me a lot of time and effort! Thank you
Thank you! I had no idea how to access the flush valve and my only access was thru the flushplate hole in a tiled in cistern. Did it all by touch after watching your vid, 15 minute job, saved me calling out a plumber!
this video is very helpful, thank you so much - was able to change my toilet, saved me the cost of a plumber after two visits - bless you
I didn't have a clue what make of toilet I had untill I saw this video. This showed what seals to change and how to do it - great thanks.
I am so pleased I came across this video. I have had exactly the same issue as the one you are talking through. After replacing the main flush valve (which probably needed to be replaced anyway, the water was still leaking from the inlet valve, even after holding up the plastic float which I didn’t even know was possible!!
Anyway, thankfully after taking a picture of your diaphragm part I went to multiple stores and all had the standard diaphragm valve which you also show (from screwfix etc) after going to my final plumbing merchant (Wolesley Plum Centre) they gave me the correct valve and like your set up, the water valve is all tiled away behind the toilet.
From switching off the main water valve in the kitchen to replacing the diaphragm, it took about 4 minutes! Switched the water back on and now all working.
Your video is very well explained for me and has probably saved me a call out fee and a replacement inlet valve, all for some inconvenience in shopping around today for the correct valve and spending £8 as I had to buy the full ideal inlet service pack.
Thank you again!!!
Thanks for the video. I had purchased one of the service kits and thought I would have a look at how someone else did it, even though I had replaced one before. HOWEVER, when I took the other one apart and fitted the diaphragm, it did not stop filling up. It then became apparent that I needed the one WITHOUT the lip around the top. If I had not watched your video, I would not have known there were 2 types! So despite it fact it was not the one you needed, it was the one I needed!! So once again, thank you for your informative video.
You are a star, thanks for making this so easy to follow along with, you just saved me from spending a fortune, thank you
Thankyou for your time in helping others. It's really appreciated.
Freehansa, thank you so much. What a great tutorial. And you present it in such an easy to follow manner. I have the exact model and issue so it was perfect and saved me paying a plumber.
You explained this well. I had this problem in two loos, and it turned out one was just the flush valve but the other needed both changing, though I found the new (non-ridged) Ideal Standard inlet valve diaphragm cap worked fine. You saved me a plumber's bill and a lot of stress - thank you.
Watched your video yesterday, ordered the part from Amazon and fixed my toilet today. Thanks so much, great video.
Thanks so much for the very clear instructions. You made it all straightforward and simple to understand. I'm off to my famous local Aladdins cave hardware shop in the morning. They've been there since the 1860's! If they don't have it then no one else will!!
Thanks for your Video I fixed the toilet with 4 pounds only!
This fixed my issue. I'm clueless with these things so thank you very much!
I was considering getting a plumber in but in the end it cost me less than a fiver. Brilliant video!
Thank you!!!! Your step by step has saved me a fortune and I have fixed the problem thanks to you!!!!!🙌
Very helpful, thank you! I had the same problems but was fortunate that a good clean of the inlet valve diaphragm sorted the drip. The flush rubber was very clogged up with toilet cleaner - a new one was easily fitted with your instructions.
LEGEND!!!! Thank you sir!!!!!!!! I couldnt get the bloody valve clip off but i just needed some brute force like you shown. Thanks so much 🙏🏼
Bless you and thank you so much! This is a brilliant guide. My silent, almost invisible stream had doubled my water bill!
mine too, anglian water emailed me saying i was using 13 litres an hour ! amazing how a trickle can add up
Thanks for this, I have 3 of these cisterns in my house and up to now I have always taken the cistern off and changed the whole siphon. This will save me a lot of time and monet.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, research and hard work with your viewers on RUclips. You’ve saved us all a bucket load of time (not to mention a hefty plumbers bill) and taken us all straight to the solutions. 👍🏻😁
Thanks for this video, I’m not very good at plumbing but after watching this managed to cure our leaking toilet. 👍
Hey followed this fix again as the inlet diaphragm went, Freehansa, I can't state how invaluable your video is, all the info and gotchas are spot on. I had it playing in the plumbers merchants while we were working out which part it was (raised edges as opposed to the flat edges as you said). Absolutely spot on fix. Thanks again! Saved me a lot of money.
Hi Kato, Where did it find the Ideal Standard Univalve Diaphragms. Mine got raised edges as compared to the flat edges. I am not able to find it online or from Ideal Standard.
@@hamentraina same here. Its been months but can't find the raised edges one anywhere.
Could you please share the info from where did you found the raised edges washer.
@@youdleydoo I couldn't find it. I have to replace the whole thing....
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, you saved me about 50 quid for a new valve. 🙂
Thank you. I now feel confident about fixing the leaking flush valve seal because you explained everything so clearly.
Thank you for posting this video as it has saved me a huge headache. Couldn’t get a plumber to come out and look at it and I thought I would need to take the whole cistern off. I’m so glad came your post thank. I’ve ordered what I think it the right bit off eBay will let you know. 🙌
This video has helped me out massively!! Thankyou!! Inlet valve had gone one mine, which caused a big drip in the bowl, 2 minute job and then sorted!!! Thankyou again!!!
This video helped me out, thanks. Didn't know it was so simple. Shame on the parts, we have three of these, two leaked, so I picked up three, one as a spare, for the sum of £26.
Many thanks for posting this video!! My house has exactly these Ideal Standard toilets (Alto) and after 10 years have similarly started to drip. Having watched this video and ordering the bits, my toilet is now fixed. Brilliant - and saved the expense of a plumber. Thank you so much!!
I am so pleased to hear that. Thank you.
Great video, thank you so much. After seeing this it was just a new washer and clip from Amazon for just over £4 for the flush valve and all sorted.
Brilliant video - just saved me a plumber visit - mine was changed only recently by a plumber but he hadnt made sure it was properly in so there was still a slight trickle. Cleaned it up and it seems to be ok now. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. The service inlet valve servicing kit does not come with a serrated diaphragm as it has been discontinued, however, the smooth diaphragm as provided does seem to work. Also, be very careful when you turn the unit the lugs break very very easily!😀
That's really helpful. I've fixed my leaking toilet. You saved me £60. Thank you
Thank you so much, I have managed to fix this myself, had a quote from plumber £60 call out plus parts plus VAT was going to be over £120, cost me just under £10 for genuine parts, your help and advice was excellent.
Really excellent video, supplying the part number for the replacement part saved all the hunting around.
Brilliant, and as you say there is next to nothing any where that explains this simple task. Many thanks
you are a life saver man thank you for putting this video together!!! couldn't find anything else to help with our toilet apart from this video
Thank you for posting video.Useful to know you can get replacement flush valve seal as a spare part.
Perfect for me as I had the exact same problem with the exact same toilet. Great video
excellent video mate, have just changed the washer 👍👍
Thank you so much for this video. Exactly my cistern. You are a life saver. Many many thanks
i only needed to see how the top part of fill valve can be taken apart. the rabber off and on back in its place and no money spent. almost spent c. £20 on parts. Great video dude.
Very cleary explaned. Thanks to that contributor. I will now try to fix my leak myself rather than cann in an expensive plumber. I have ordered the parts already from Wolseley and will collect and fit them tomorrow. Wish me luck....
Thanks for this video. I had two toilets start leaking at the same time. Your clear explanation and instructions made it easy for me to do apply the fix (replaced seal on flush valve). Saved me lots of money too
Great video.Had issues with my cistern. Watched this and was able to repair myself.
Thank you for sharing this - this was exactly the problem I had and struggled to find a ‘how to’
Thank you so much for your help. Very kind of you to post this video to help others. And 170k views wow, you deserve this:)
Very helpful. Hopefully my problem might be solved. God bless.
I have Armitage Shanks Dual Flush. I couldn't remove the central gadget but by fiddling by my fingers I found the rubber diaphragm had slipped off. I pulled it out and washed it and put it back and pressed it upwards to fit. No clips. It works nicely. It' mystery why the central gadget couldn't be removed. I didn't won't to force and break it.
Thank you so much for this!!! I have had exactly the same leaks for almost a year, it's been driving me mad! I bought 3 seals this morning and fitted them in around 10 minutes, problem completely solved!
Jeremy, How did you stand it for all that time?!😱 Three days and I've had more than enough!! 🤯😵😖🙉🤪🥴🤣
Where and what did u buy . We are having the same issue

Awesome thank you so much. Delightfully explained and demonstrated. Genuinely helped me out
Very useful. Thanks. Less worried about tackling this job now.
Thank you. You have saved me a ton of money and a headache.
Thank you for this very clearly and calmly explained video
So helpful for me! Thank you for uploading this video. Take care 😊
Thanks, this has saved me so much time and hassle. Glad you posted this.
Thanks man great video , couldn't find any detailed info online so definitely helped.🤞
You've helped yet another person. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this clear demonstration. I wasn't confident in changing the vavle but will give it try.💋💕
Thank you for the concise explanation. Extremely helpful to see the procedure before attempting my own repair.
Thank you so much. I had the same issue and it is now fixed. I replaced but the flush valve and the diaphragm, so i cant say which of the two (or both...) was faulty. Saved me the plumber's bill
Really helpful as had previously received the wrong washer. Thank you
Thanks for sharing, I have had the exact same problem at home with the inlet valve and the flush valve, now I know what to replace. 👍
Thanks great video,
One tip that may be of interest to some. After I changed the flush valve it was still leaking. After about 30 mins of reseating the valve it made no difference. I then discovered that the old rubber valve had deposited bits of rotted rubber on the toilet cistern meaning that the new flush valve could not sit and seal properly. After a good clean of the cistern side of the seal all was resolved.
Huge thanks.
Great and detailed explanation.
Legend, kinda found what was wrong then watch your video 😅
Thanks so much for this - generous, clear & utterly indispensable
Many, many thanks for a great video which gave me the confidence to change the valve seal myself 😀
just fixed mine today. thanks for this precise video, it just did it form me. have been paying heavy for my water bill bcos of this propblem but now, not anymore
You are brilliant young man
You made my problem easy to solve
Thank you thank you thank you
Absolutely spot on, fix the issue with my downstairs toilet. Driving me insane it was. Many thanks for creating this video!!!
amazing video you have given me the confidence to fix my own toilet x
A really good explanation, nice an simple and well described...many thanks
Brilliant tutorial! Thank you so much!
Hello Freehansa, The video is awesome and really well made. Thanks a ton.
I have this exact system, so very helpful, thankyou.
thanks, i needed to find the easiest way to get the retaining clip off as it was being stubborn
Very helpful- like you I changed the seal on the cistern but water is pouring in through the inlet valve … looks like it’s the second one need to fit … hope that fixes it - thank you!
You've literally saved my Christmas from catastrophe - thank you! lol
Thank you very much for your efforts. Great video
Grt video... Just fixed mine following ur video.. Thx
Thank you that was a great help, i also neaded a new diafram for the ciston fill valve, had a tiny hole in it.
Great video thanks. I would suggest the Blue deposit is not caused by toilet cleaning blocks BUT its copper deposit from the plumbing in the inlet water pipe work.
Thanks so much for this clear and informative video!
THANK YOU GREAT VIDEO.
Great video, just a small point but you may need to clean the seal mating face in the bottom of the cistern too. This can also become dirty over time and have some limescale build up.
Thank you, super helpful video!
fantastic video thank you so much
Thank you very much for sharing the solution, You’ve just solved a problem for us thanks 🙏
Thanks man, such a helpful video!
Thanks...excellent video saved me time and money....good job
