People who are new to haikyuu: So who’s the overpowered antagonist everyone hates?
Haikyuu stans: hate? Oh dear, we don’t do that here
I mean Miya Asumu (Asamu? Whichever) and Ushiwaka too I guess fulfill that role pretty well
(SPOILERS)
until the last arc where we love everyone involved and who fucking knows who were meant to be cheering for because I want them all to win but they can’t and... anyway it’s a good show
Derpy Mule uh, idk about you but I actually love Ushijima and yes, Miya Atsumu is kind of an ass but I don’t hate him at all. There aren’t any antagonists in this show, only rivals.
Haikyuu has literally the most chill fandom ever, This fandoms definitely not as Toxic as other fandoms I know.
We adopt everyone. Period. No one, except yamaguchi and tendou’s bullies, is left behind. You see that libero on Wakutani? There’s probably a fan club just for him, including libero nation.
@@embersofthesunset , definitely not their bullies everyone except their bullies.
Haikyuu has the absurd ability to make me feel genuinely bad for the opposite team when they lose. Everyone just wants to win so badly.
Have to second this. Watching some of the matches, after getting to know characters on both sides of the net, made it impossible to cheer for just one side or want one team to lose.
Futility Belt the same happens to me with Demon Slayer
still devastated seijoh lost
Go check out Hajime no ippo. Same idea but the fact that it’s boxing allows more development of the opponent
I felt sad when Jozhenji lost. They look like a fun team.
Haikyuu is really realistic. They have their losses. Unlike most anime where the mc is super op and wins everytime. Haikyuu shows that you have to work hard and that even if you do try your hardest, you wont always win. Haikyuu also builds up the tension in a nice way. You get to know the characters really well too. Most importantly, the characters are to soooo hot.
Spoilers!!
When the boys lost the big Aoba Johsai match, I was shocked. I knew, fundamentally, they didn’t have the skill to beat them yet, but you always expect the ‘good guys’ to come out on top. It was such a crushing loss, and so unexpected, but the show wouldn’t have had as much punch any other way - the joy I felt when they finally defeated Oikawa and his team wouldn’t have been the same without being prefaced by the soul crushing defeat before it
@@beccaroonie2946 I was like, karasuno is a protagonists team, they can win easily against aoba, when karasuno lost the match, I was feeling really sad. When next time the faced aoba, and they won, it was one of the greatest feeling
Super hot
Most protags are underdogs, tbh. It’s just like:
Powerless supportive kinda badass protagonist and who won’t give up! And then they get more powerful, cuz they have this one goal.
These protagonist are like, Hinata, Ash, Asta, Deku and many more!
I protags that could be a easily just be side characters, but have this one thing that still makes them protagonists
Kinda like in jojo’s, they connect, cuz of their bloodline and personalities, but it could have been like Kakyoin was a jojo and Jotaro was just a side character, that could have worked easily
But I just can’t like haikyuu?!
And it isn’t that realistic, when they actually play it kinda ain’t things just happen like zap ziu pau and a point, but in anime the watchers have to process the hat is going on so they have to slow down it and add unrealistic stuff

i don't like sports, and that's why haikyuu never interests me because why watch a show on volleyball when i don't even know anything about volleyball neither plan to know?? but i have never regretted watching haikyuu, i honestly watched it because there were so much hype so i just wanted to see what's so great about it. best decision ever.
Same,i feel like alot of ppl think that way before watching haikyuu "it's just volleyball, whats so interesting about it" my friends werent that interested aswell but when i finally convinced them they became just as attached
Exactly, I've *never* been interested in anything that has to do with sports, so I never expected myself to fall in love with a sports anime. But after watching it, I understand why so many kinds of people like it so much, it's not only a show about volleyball, it's a show about *life* .
Same I'm not into sports at all but haikyuu still makes me interested in it, it also educate me about volleyball even if I don't play it. Honestly I just waitch it because it was on tv and I have nothing to do, yet here we are
Same i felt that way too now im obsessed with haikyuu and im trying to get my best friend to watch it when she’s just saying, “its just abt volleyball why watch it?” :(
My friend actually recommended haikyuu to me like months before I decided to watch it, but I told her that I wasn't interested because I'm not into sports and I regretted so much that I didn't watch it immediately because when I did, it captivated me so much to the point where I would rewatch it several times and I even made an anitwt bc of it. Haikyuu is such a wonderful show with beautifully written characters.
"how many times in a single episode can u call the haikyuu cast idiots?"
geoff: yes.
To be fair, 99 percent of the Haikyuu cast are massive idiots, with the exception of Sachiro (the wavy perm dude who is friends with seagull dude). Was tempted to exclude Akaashi from being an idiot but he unironically respects Bokuto so
If I had to point out one thing about Haikyuu, it would be: Everyone is humanized.
Everyone, be it the opposite team, coaches or even the exposition stand-ins, they all get these little funny moments or relatable traits to make them memorable and feel like real people. It could have been so easy to solely focus on Karasuno's characters (which would have made for a perfectly good series), but it doesn't. It goes way beyond that and it's delightful.
Haikyuu is a delight and it always manages to put a smile on my face.
In fact I really don't like Ushijima, cause he's the less humanized character, even if he's not a side character. They portrayed him too much as the typical "final boss"...Actually, I think in general Shiratorizawa has the poorest character investigation (with the exception of Tendou), considering that they appear in an entire season...
Francesca Alberici i think the manga does a much better job humanizing ushijima and shiratorizawa than the anime did. the anime cut out quite a few shiratorizawa-centric scenes probably due to either budget or time constraints. ushijima is also just a big dumb loser who just really loves volleyball a lot and is bad at reading the atmosphere, just like kageyama!
@@bohyunjeong938 hes also scared of hinata
That’s so true! Bc I can’t pick a favorite team I love all of them! Every single character even characters I don’t/forget the name of... they are all beautiful and I wanna protect them all 😭💜😅
Bohyun Jeong he also is always serious even in dumb situations and that makes him so funny
Actually, is it me or does literally anyone whos watched haikyuu have their own favorite line that immediately comes to mind?
"I'm Hinata Shoyo from the concrete" is still a favorite line to me.
"Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish." Tends to come to mind for me. There's a lot of good ones though.
“Never forget this worthless pride of mine.” is probably mine
Onikku kami-sama! ONIKKU KAMI-SAMA! (no idea if that's spelt right)
”I was waiting for this fraying caused by slight annoyance and panic.” Is definitely my favorite one, as overrated as it might be.
Every other sports story: The main team is the most strategic, most talented, they never lose....the opposite team sabotage them but the main team still end up winning
Haikyuu: Every team is talented, strategic and strong in their own ways. Every team has their loses and wins. No sabotaging......just talented people with the burning desire to play the game till the end
This speaks for itself ✊. The only unrealistic thing about Haikyuu is how incredibly attractive every character is lol
And they’re all dorks. I love them so much.
He’s not even wrong about Haikyuu inspiring people. After watching the first two seasons of Haikyuu, I was encouraged to work out. And from there I was encouraged to do other things like cooking, and really challenging my creativity. I love this show and it honestly does inspire me to be better for my mental health and physical health
The things I like about Haikyuu :
1. No powers, just pure real life abilities. The reason why Slam Dunk is the only acceptable Sports Anime for me is because its true to life.
2. Each characters are thought out. You can do a deep character analyzation of each character. I am not exaggerating. You can do all of them.
3. The animation is insane. Though the last season is not the same its still good.
4. The character development is amazing too. The way that they do it all at once. Watching those makes you cry or rejoice with the characters.
5. The moments that the characters shine they shine brighter than the sun.
Haikyuu is in my top 5 animes and its the only anime that made me read the manga since I cant wait for them to release the animated one.
yeah. u r right. even though it is Anime people often like to look things which are more possible in actual life. which makes it more relatable in everyone's life.
the fact that you mentioned SLAM DUNK...... hahaha. i hate writing so i hope u understand
If this ain’t fax idk what is
Even a small character as tsukki got his moment! He went from not caring much for the sport to loving it 🥺
The number 2 is soo true. Like even if they show only a few minutes about the character's background or stories etc., we can still write like 10 pages of essays about them... or maybe even more!

haikyuu’s also very realistic, no powers, just real life abilities. the main team also has their losses, unlike other animes where the main characters always win.

And now, I not only caught up with the show, but I also managed to finish reading the manga (I picked up on the chapter where season 4 anime ends).
I always sucked at sports, even volleyball but the show really makes you wanna do better and try harder. I don’t even have enough words to say how much I love all the characters and the story. -The Little Giant/Small Giant/Little big ace/my most favorite and attractive character even if he just appeared for a couple of chapters
I'm not lying when I say Haikyuu definitely has some of the *best* characterization, character growth, and story development. Haruichi Furudate is a genius, and they took to their story with a passion you can feel through each page flip, and through the screen.
You will fall in love with almost every character you're introduced to. They aren't just people you're going to forget about, they're people who'll stick with you for a long time, and inspire you at every turn. You will feel invigorated when Karasuno wins, but you'll also feel a little melancholic knowing that the other team has to go home, and some of them for the last time.
You get training arcs where change is encouraged, and then it's taken by the back of the shirt and whipped in your face. You had a character you didn't like? Well, now you do.
For the story, where most have plot holes and things that were never expanded upon, there's closure in everything. And it's satisfying. Things aren't left open ended, but instead they come full circle, and they hit you home. It's the workings of someone who knew what they were starting, and took it in stride.
It's incredible. You fall in love with the sport, and you feel the need to go and get a group of people to laugh and play with, and feel just as these Highschoolers did when you watched them.
I love this show, the manga, this story. I love everything about it, and it's most definitely changed my life.
Then try Slam Dunk. It is not one of the best sports anime, it is one of the best anime.

Something I love about Haikyuu is that they give so much context and depth to nearly every character. They even gave a mini arc for one of the Karasuno bench players. And I love it. I love learning about the characters and understanding them on a different level.
The Soundtrack is God tier also. There is not a single bad OP and ED. The music in the episodes is amazing too. Especially when Tsukishima blocks ushiwaka.
That scene is incredibly powerful. He is always reserved and when he blocks him shows real emotion for the first time blending in the flashback from the Tokyo training....damn so hype
Its no surprise when you consider the composer also did MHA's soundtrack. Yuuki Hayashi is the god of hype shounen music
@@lmaAsian exactly
Yeah I think the OST doesn't get talked about nearly enough. Hayashi and Tachibana are absolute masterminds when it comes to the art of balancing extremely hype mixes with the slower and more reflective tones. If we take into account every factor that makes this anime good: animation, characters, music, story etc. I wholeheartedly believe that the music is the biggest contributor to what makes this show so utterly fantastic.
That's my opinion though, other people might not care about the music nearly as much as I do :P

Talent is almost always an extremely tiny factor to people's skill level. But there is a lot of people that are working very hard and pretending they don't because they think it makes them look cool. But if you know the truth it just makes them look like assholes. Work hard and you'll get there too.
@@MrSkme I agree and disagree. As Haikyu!! proves, talent can make people naturally better than you by a wide margin, but if they solely rely on that talent and do nothing with it, then they will never succeed fully. Kageyama was like that in the first season, he wasn't applying his talents where they needed to be and he fell to Oikawa in their re-match. But when he learned what he needed to do (ironically from Oikawa himself) his team and him managed to defeat Aoba Josai once and for all.

I think the most underrated parts about the show are the many memorable and motivational quotes that don't apply to sports alone, the coaches (and players) often give advice about things that can be applied to pretty much anything in life. Haikyuu also shows that defeat isn't a reason to quit, it's a reason to work twice as hard and improve, and I think that's the strength of the story. The lessons it teaches doesn't just apply to volleyball, it applies to everything that takes effort. Like when Nishi says: *"Life's a bore if you don't challenge yourself."* I believe it's a show that pretty much any young person should watch, because it teaches one of the most important lessons of all: great things don't happen without great effort, sure you can get lucky from time to time, but at the end of the day you have to work to get results. I already worked out before starting this show, but man did it make me shoot into overdrive.
haikyuu is one of those animes that genuinely makes me feel horrible when a team loses. just seeing how hard that team worked and how they have their own dreams, hopes and desires that they worked so hard for makes it impossible to just want one team to win.

Haikyuu will be the most memorable sports anime you'll ever watch, you won't see a overpower protagonist or antagonist, every single character is realistic and balance, almost every character have character development despite their huge cast.
Here's 10% of their development:
•Hinata our protagonist, a human tangerine🍊 and decoy of karasuno is short 167cm and counting (in volleyball that's very short) but that doesn't stop him from doing what he loves and became the next little giant, he used to only be good for his quick reflexes and stamina but when time goes by, his gradually getting better at receiving and serving through watching his opponents matches. Though it isn't a drastic improvement. While he was learning, he used to received with his face.
•Oikawa, captain of Aoba Johsai. If you pay attention, you'll see him wearing white and black knee pads, the white one is not really a knee pad but a brace or protector, he wore it cause of a previous injury. Oikawa and kageyama was rivals to the core, since they're both setters and oikawa have some bitter history with kageyama. (I'll just let you find that out yourself)
•Sugawara, the mom of karasuno and a backup setter. Suga used to be in the staring lineups but then kageyama showed up, suga can clearly see the differences between their sets. Suga sets from experience and bonding with the spikers, while kageyama is a genius setter and can set the ball directly to the spiker's palm. Suga in the name of the team he sacrifice his own spot on the starting lineup since coach Ukai can't choose between the two setters. The sad part is that this was his last year in Karasuno as he was a 3rd year yet he's still sacrificed it.

honestly you call fall in love with all characters in haikyuu, even for the opposite team like wtf it makes it harder to not feel guilty when the opposite team lost. When aoba johsai lost i cried my eyes out-
My favorite character is *The Great King Oikawa* besides that his character was created to represents the "Hard work does not always beat talent" quote, he also shows that people don't have to give up pursuing their passions and neither that they will always lose to greater talents. Oikawa shows how to accept the limitations and go forward, this tenacity is actually embodied by his first name 'Tooru' (徹) which means 'to pass through, typically with great intent and effort' or 'to do something thoroughly'.
"Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish." The best line in the show spoken by the best character.
Every bois in Haikyu are best bois
I can't pick a favorite team, they're all my children. However Nishinoya is def my fav character, that double save in the Shiratorizawa match had me out of my chair SO FAST
He has some breathtaking saves in the next matches in the manga and i can not wait to see them animated
That and Tsukki’s kill block on ushijima’s spike, that one was amazing i was basicallly standing up while yelling OHHH MYYY GOOODDDD
Fave character (excluding hinata and kageyama) is probably daichi tbh

@@thesnipingspider3852 not sure if you should say that cuz spoiler,,,,,, but yes, that one
Catalin Armand my bad.i just started the manga and in two days I’m on the karusono vs kamemodai match. I didn’t think I’d like the manga because the anime is insane and sports manga seemed weird to me. I soon overcame it and now I love it. I can’t wait for it to be animated. Do you think season4 part 2 will have the kamemodai match or will that be a separate season?
As a former volleyball player, watching Haikyuu brought me back to when I used to play. It made me regret quitting. I remember the feeling of playing and watching haikyuu took me back to those feelings and memories.
Damn I miss volleyball..
My mom is a sports anime fan whilst I'm a supernatural anime fan. She tried many times to make me watch sport anime and so I finally gave in. Haikyuu was what I watched. And I liked it. In return I had her watch Tokyo Ghoul. She also liked it. Now we both watch each other's taste in anime. (Yes, my mom is an anime fan.)
When my boi thukishima screamed after blocking that moment alone make this anime legendary for me ...till then it was a great anime but at that moment witnessing one of the best anime character development ever Haikyuu became one of the best anime i have ever seen ..ironically that moment was also THE moment thuki got hooked into volleyball like bokuto said what a masterpiece

I just finished the 3rd season today and this show has reignited my love for volleyball.

This show hit really hard since I could relate to so many characters in this show.
Honestly, I've tried many sports anime but never got into them. Haikyuu got me hooked so quickly and kept me so invested. Truly setting the bar high

Haikyuu is a ten out of ten I will never get tired of this show
I discovered haikyuu with my friend and she didnt continue watching but I did. I was screaming during the first 10 episodes we watched and she was like,, the hell?

not gonna write a whole essay about why haikyuu is my favorite anime and one of the best series in existence because i've absolutely done that elsewhere, but thank you for covering this show and what makes it so great. i kept nodding and smiling so big every time you mentioned an element or character i particularly love, so yeah i was smiling a whole lot :')
haikyuu motivates me to exercise and get shit done, but it's also done a lot for me emotionally. as someone who deals with low self esteem, insecurity, and very broad inferiority complex, it was life changing for me to go through high school watching a series that involved several characters dealing with the same stuff. tsukishima and oikawa come to mind--though tsukishima refuses to try and oikawa pushes himself too hard, they both struggle with the fear/knowledge that there's someone better than them out there and both react very badly to that fear. eventually, though, they come to realize that they don't NEED to be better than everyone, and it's okay to be driven by their own pride and do what makes them happy simply because they want to, not worrying about any external pressure. i really needed to hear that, and for these reasons and others, they're two of my favorite characters. i also love yamaguchi, who inspires me as well because we're both anxious and worried about disappointing others, but he puts in the work and becomes someone dependable for his team.
i guess i did write a bit of an essay lol. but the whole thing about haikyuu is that it makes me say, wow, i can do that too! even if it's not volleyball, it comforts me with its message that it's okay to fail, because you'll come back stronger, and it's okay to do the best YOU can do, because what matters is it's YOU, and you don't have to be better than someone else to be worth something.
this is long, so if anyone reads all this, thank you! and feel free to wax poetic about your own favorite characters in the replies, i love to read that stuff :)
I love this series in its entirety but I must say, season 2 was one of the best things I've ever seen in anime.
I love the way he says everything in the same tone. He explains both the in-depth characters, relations, and plot design, in the same way, he called Oikawa, "a big dumb loser with a bit of an inflated ego" and it kills me
Those are fighting words. I could say so many things that make Oikawa a great character. Just like I can say so many good things about 80% of the characters we know. It’s so hard to dislike Haikyu characters.
I watched one episode. Just one. And suddenly I was attached.
I watched one season. Just one. And suddenly I was wanting to learn volleyball.
I watched the second season. And suddenly I was watching clips of real volleyball matches and let me say, it is amazing, especially the Japanese ones.
And then you are learning the name of the best players in every position for every national team.
And then, when a game is being shown on TV while your dad is jumping through channels you make him stop to watch all of the sets of the game.
I’m not an anime fan, but I absolutely love Haikyuu. I love how they’re all motivated and dedicated to practicing and training, how it shows their individual work and teamwork, and how the animation is smooth and flawless. I’m musician and watching Haikyuu gave me so much motivation. And Haikyuu has so much tension that I just couldn’t stop watching it!

There are few anime that got me as excited as this one. I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest, and I couldn't breathe. I was hopping up and down in my seat in almost every moment of every match. This show made me laugh, almost cry and cheer like there was no tomorrow. Also, it helps that entire cast is the most lovable bunch of dorks I've ever seen.

Tsuki's big moment in the Shiratorizawa match mad me leap out of my seat in excitement. Never have I felt like that watching any other piece of media. Even while reading the manga, my heart is often in my throat at the end of a match cliffhanger. Haikyuu just gives you such a rush of adrenaline and motivation while at the same time feeling like you're coming home where its warm and comforting.
When that moment happened I started crying. That’s the first time an anime or any show ever has made me have tears in my eyes, much less cry. I don’t think I can put into words the amount of emotion this show has given me haha.
I love it so much and I gives me such and adrenaline rush that I just have to scream and cheer with the characters when I watch this! ...my family thinks I'm just overreacting tho, but they DON'T UNDERSTAND! Reading these comments, it lets me know that I'm not alone 😊
YOOOO I thought it was just meeeeee I feel sooooo freaken happy and excited when they win or anything in a game. It's crazy but amazing. God bless this anime. It can make my day so much better in just 24 minutes
I totally get this. No matter how many times I reread the manga or rewatch the anime, the feels are literally the same every damn time. Even though I already know what will happen or who wins and loses, the anticipation is still there.
"You can run marathons while watching this show!"
I can sort of confirm that (ish). I didn't run or do any exercise at all until January. I started watching the show two months in. I just finished Season 2 and I can now run 10 miles without stopping. Definitely watch the show!
I adore Furudate for being able to drag a lot of attention to volleyball. What a hero for the sport
My favorite character in the series?
Toru Oikawa.
Oh god, Oikawa. He has a tremendous backstory, and it makes me love him and hate him at the same time. The reason I love him is because overall he knows his weaknesses, and he knows his strengths. When he admits that Kageyama's sets are better than his, he genuinely means it. Though, he makes a plan for the future to not let them score any points by keeping their defense up. Oikawa, is just an overall important character because of the roll he plays. And oh god, his personality. He knows he's good, which is something you kind of get taken aback by. He is seen as someone big- but he has feelings. And you see him struggle because of his past, and he is in general a great leader. He pushes people to their limits, and can get everyone to coordinate on a team, which is something I really love about him.
Sorry for the rant
And he tried to bitch slap an 11 year old:)
he's my favorite too!!
To hell with flattykawa, I would have liked him a lot more if he wasn't such a bitch towards Karasuno. Also, he should have gone to shirtatorisawa (however you spell it)
edit: Bruh leave me alone this was 3 months ago, I still don't like him and you can't change my mind. So stoppppppppp
@Withro Anime Edits Sorry, but I just can't like him no matter how hard I try because he reminds me of someone I know and real life and hate. Stop attacking me for not liking a fictional character
@@phoenixchi1332 The thing about that is that he didn't mean to. In the moment he was just so frustrated that he had to develop those skills of serving and setting while Tobio just, had them down in the first place. He trained for years and years just to have some kid randomly show up and suddenly be better than him. Of course he's frustrated, everything crumbled around him. He even apologized immediately after, while Kageyama probably doesn't even remember the incident.

I cried when Hinata bowed even though when he wasn't on the court !!
Nishinoya Yu is my favorite Haikyuu character.
1. He's a fellow short person.
2. He's driven and always has his team's back.
3. He's close to Asahi, Tanaka, and Hinata three of my other favorites.
4. He LOVES his position. There's something to be said about someone who loves what they do wholeheartedly and so purely.
5. He's voiced by Bakugou's Japanese VA. An immensely talented man.
6. His English VA is Greg Ayers, a VA I have loved ever since I first got into anime 13 years ago.
7. He's pretty cute. Shallow reason, I know, but hey, I've got eyes and they love looking at him and many, if not all, the other characters in this show (male and female).
8. He's a good boy who jist wants to win with his friends and according to anime law all good boys must be protected and cherished. (ex. Goku, Naruto, Ichigo, Midoriya, etc.) It is literally the law.
Thank you to anyone who bothered to get to the bottom and read all this. I am just so passionate when it comes to literally ANYTHING about this masterpiece of a show.
I agree with everything you said!! I also have a 'shallow' reason why he's my fave character but I fell in love with him ever since his first appearance~ I mean it's one of the best (and coolest) introduction of a great character like him!!
@@enbi5440 I know, right?! When I saw him in the opening (before his introduction) I was a little apprehensive, thinking he'd be a jerky rival showcasing all that Hinata should be and could be, that'd he'd be the epitome of the perfect short volleyball player and be a jerk about it. I didn't know how Haikyu!! worked yet. Nishinoya is the epitome of what a volleyball player (not just a short one) should be; but he's also a sweet, funny and loyal teammate who just wants to improve his already God-like skills. He's just so awesome! I'm glad you agree!
I avoided this show for years because I played volleyball year round from middle school through college and stopped right before season 1 aired, and just didn't want to watch a show about a sport I couldn't really play at a competitive level anymore. As a setter, Kageyama's rant in episode 2 or 3 basically hooked me for the rest of the show.
i think he already has a video about run with the wind
I feel the same way!! It was so hard to have to stop because I couldn't medically play anymore and watching the show was like seeing flashbacks to moments in my life. I was a Libro, defensive specialist, and a severing specialist as I am tiny like Hinata but watching the show was hard. I'm glad someone else understands!
