I've never felt comfortable arguing with people over how much something should cost! But I can see how knowing the ball park of what something should cost would help you not get completely ripped off
Yes to the DIY thing!! The lock on our back door got really loose over time and we had someone quote over $500 to fix it. We ended up just taking it apart to see what was happening and it literally just needed to have the screws tightened.
I've had contractors change the quote halfway through a job. Was the worst experience and trying to get other contractors in to quote on a job already started was just impossible
This makes me so grateful for my husband! He does everything around the house in terms of repairs and reno's and maybe I've been taking it for granted how great that is
Wow it's pretty incredible that you could get such different quotes for the same job... I guess there's no way of regulating that sort of thing is there?
It really depends on how much time you have to finish your project. If possible, you want to wait for them to follow up with you . Otherwise, you could reach out and ask if it’s the best and final price and if there’s any room to wiggle .
What if you're providing a service that no one else can? Something that you took a lot of time working towards being able to do? Shouldn't you be allowed to charge what you think is right for that kind of service?
It’s very rare that there’s only one contractor or service provider unless you’re in a significantly rural market. There’s usually at least a few. The goal is not necessarily just a widow people down to where they don’t make a profit. It’s just to make sure that you’re getting value for what you’re paying for. In the case of one person offering the service, you may just ask them to break down the cost and explain your position to see if you can save a little extra contractors negotiate .
I’ve had a similar experience with inflated prices from contractors. Negotiating and being firm really does help! Thanks for sharing these strategies
Thanks for your comment!
I love that you shared actual examples of savings! These are the kinds of tips that make a real difference for people in everyday life, thank you!
You’re welcome and thanks for your comment. More to come in future videos.
Thank you for the tips. It's hard as a single woman trying to get repairs done at home and not really knowing what's reasonable.
You’re welcome, there are also some great books on negotiating but mainly you just need to ask for things and question everything.
@@chrisdroberts thanks....

These are great tips, thanks! How long do you usually wait before following up with a contractor for a better deal?

@@chrisdroberts ohh that makes a lot of sense! do you find most of the time they do get back in contact with you if you wait it out?
The story about the spa part is crazy, charging someone more than double and saying it's to get it quickly? I'd be so outraged
I know right? Crazy talk, but it’s true.
Thanks for your comment.
Yeah there's definitely a fine line between paying what's fair and getting taken advantage of and some contractors walk all over it
Thanks for your comment!
