    Hi Tom, I've worked on streetlighting for years now! You need to keep a standard van aswell!! If you are doing a load of lantern changes you want something to transport them, if your doing 30+ lanterns a day the MEWP is no good due to its weight limit! I would recommend a LWB transit for something along them lines! You will also need a flat bed to for all the ground works! But I honestly think if you get rid of a normal van you will regret it within days!!! Wish you all the luck, I've always wanted to go on my own doing this work but never had the nuts to do it, so I take my hat off to you! Highways is another kettle of fish compared to domestic

    • @muzikman2008

      Yeah, a transit sized van is needed as a work horse for those delivery and heavier loads for sure. Keep ya van Tom!

      I agree on keeping at least the Kangoo, surely he will need to do some regular electrical work whilst not on highways full time?

    • @S.ASmith
      @S.ASmith 2 года назад +1

      Movano and Master have highest load carrying capacity, sometimes see sprinters too but it's almost always Transit 350s, L2H2 or L3H4 or some sort of configuration like that. Good for keeping the large cable reels in too, and if he gets any work putting up replacement lighted signs they're fair bit smaller than a lamp column so they will fit in the LWB/XLWB vehicles over 4m in the back.

    In van
    Fridge
    Plug for kettle and George Forman
    Decent two tap sink (not the one tap rubbish)
    Ability to lock doors independently so when working near caravandwellers you don't find strange creatures in your van looking for copper.
    A dehumidifier - keeps tools and PPE dry. I used to have one from RS Components was £500 and would dry gear on drive home (heaters just create hot saturated air and condensation on van roof)
    Cable rolls at eye height in racks opposite sliding door so you can feed out top of door when working.
    A drip bead along the top of side door so when working on road side and its smashing it down water isn't coming off roof and into side door
    Run on ignition
    Drain in floor of van
    Hammock for when your waiting .

    Keeping the kangu is probably smart, even if its just for personell and tool carrying. Dont want to need have to take a flatbed or bucket truck to screwfix in the middle of a job.

    My 2 cents : i think you should keep one vehicule that you can use for regular electrical work , service calls and so on , this gives you another source of income and this way you dont put all your eggs in the same basket .
    Also having another vehicle is always handy if anything just to be able to run to the supply house or something .

    Hi Tom, good to see you and great vlog! It got me thinking that if you are still doing other electrical work as well, such as the EV chargers etc, does it not make sense to have the Kangoo or something of that nature that you can zip around in and park easily. I understand that you want to get more into the highways work like you have said a number of times, but having a smaller vehicle too will pay off.

    I’d say best bet is to hire the HIAB I’ve used different ones over the years and they are pricey bits of kit (extremely expensive when they go wrong) also the maintenance on lorries is more frequent than normal vans

  • @CalamityKim1
    @CalamityKim1 2 года назад +2

    If you’re wanting to get a truck with a Hiab which can fit posts, I’m not sure if you’re wanting new or not but obviously you’re going to need a O licences and someone will need to be the CPC holder, also a new truck would be over well over 100k. Nothing is cheap or easy. You’ll also probably have to be FORS compliant if you’re not already.
    As other have said, certainly don’t do all eggs in one basket. I’d have probably kept the traffic and sell the other. At least temporarily.
    I’m a HGV driver myself, if you need any advice let me know ☺️

    Hi Tom. I like your idea of highway work as someone who manager highway maintenance repair teams. some advise if going down the route of tm vehicle don’t go for an IPV impact protection vehicle they are design to put out tm that’s about it. You want a long wheel base 10ton vehicle with an hiab with a matrix arrow board and lights to the rear this would give you an all rounder when it comes to vehicles. If you go above 7.5 ton you will need to look at class 2 licence and cpc qualification in order to drive you may also need to look at O licence. Happy to offer advise if needed.

    Whilst I don't do highways work, I can definitely recommend fitting a small fridge in the van. When your doing long or unsociable hours, a cold drink and food makes all the difference - especially when you're on time-sensitive jobs and can't leave site.
    Would another Master van be suitable as a TM vehicle? If it's purpose is to carry additional equipment, materials, provide basic welfare it might be a contender. Whilst being a bit harder to park, it could even replace the kangoo depending on how much 'general sparking' you are thinking of doing. I assume the payload of the master is in sprinter territory (1.4-1.5T) so would be very capable of picking up bulk bags whist still loaded if you need to do any groundworks as part of a job.
    I see some people have suggested a 5 tonne MEWP, but I would be inclined to stick with multiple 3.5T vehicles. I assume both Jay (and James before he left) both held 3.5T licenses due to their age. You may run into the problem of needing staff with higher license categories or having staff that can't drive the company fleet (I'd imagine you'd be the one driving the 12T, as the boss). There's the other element of the vehicles becoming potentially 'too specialized' for highways work, when clearly you use the MEWP currently for a real variety of at-height work. Hence my above suggestion of another master van - can still be quite a multi-purpose vehicle.
    I wish you all the best with the highways endeavor, and I do admire the progress you've made when I see the MEWP driving around. But, there is always the element of minimizing risk, so keeping everything flexible to some degree seems to be to be desirable.

    Nice to see you back again Tom. Missed the video content. No point paying over the odds in rent on a building. The 35k I feel was expensive for what you had space wise. The landlady is a bit greedy, serves her right if the whole estate becomes vacant with raising her rent to double.

  • @ChrisSibley.
    @ChrisSibley. 2 года назад +3

    There is no need for a Traffic Management Vehicle bud, I saw another comment saying it was overkill and i definitely agree!
    There is just about enough room in a MEWP to carry the necessary cones and signage aswell as a days work. There will definitely be enough room to fit TM and columns on a HIAB, don't stretch the budget on unnecessary vehicles just yet. Concentrate on getting those tickets and spreading your company name about, if working in this game has taught me anything it's that a lot of continuous work from clients will come from who you know and not what you know!
    I'll edit this to add that you should look at hiring a HIAB for a little while until your foot is well and truly in the door, if could offset some costs quite nicely ;)

    I wouldn't buy a crane truck. I would rent a crane truck and driver as needed, preferably from a local civil engineering company. Maintaining good relations with a civil engineering company is important in road works. It is really common for the column base to have to be replaced after a crash and it is not replaced with a shovel. ;)

    Welcome back my friend. I’ve missed you. I totally understand the lack of content because business definitely comes first.
    With regards to the vehicles, I think you should sell the traffic but keep the kangoo as a small run around (site visits, meetings ets) and use the proceeds on a traffic management vehicle.

    Glad you’re doing well Tom. I’d consider selling the second traffic to fund the 12T for sure.
    I’d only then sell the Kangoo if you aren’t going to take any more domestic work at all - I know you’re going all in with the highways but is it already at a point where it can sustain the company? If yes then full ahead my son. If it’s in the pipeline, then definitely stage the sales and purchases to phase out the domestic side of things.
    What is happening regarding the existing team? I haven’t seen or heard them working or training for highways work? Though I assume if you’re planning for multiple highways vehicles then someone has to drive them… 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Some vehicle lease places are adapting to the uncertainty in the construction industry by offering shorter leases.
    3 months in some places.
    So, theoretically, you could lease what you need with money you've got in your pocket and make a more long term decision on what to do a few months down the line when you have a better clue about what's going on.

    Tom honestly, start from scratch. Sell all the trucks, get a 10k Sprinter cherry picker. Van is large enough to carry barriers in then get a 3.5t TMV IF you really need one, if not just have another Sprinter with racking. We're in a different industry but still installation and a Sprinter is the best all rounder. Also been in the same situation having to move etc and thinking oh this won't work because of that etc - there will be no perfect unit, no perfect van sadly. But just don't overthink it, do the above and get cracking as soon as you can. Then just find yard space.

    12t hiab is going to be a big cash cow
    HGV licence . Operators licence. 6 Weekly inspections or can’t use backup Hgv driver and hiab licence
    Those costs mean 12t needs to be out most of the week which does not happen in real life for column change
    We use hiab fassi 4-8 and a 16t all on pto…. And with new idal laws coming in do we go donkey engine or full electric pump… other company we know now only hire what they need from nation hire
    We don’t do column changes anymore we only do emergency call out when a column is down or car has hit traffic lights we make safe electrical and tack column away (which is also good ) we keep the stainless column scrap. Better money then just changing 24/7 call-out fee and price for job

    Are the bucket trucks not available on a 7ton Iveco Daily platform? With careful planning it would be able to handle the welfare side of things in 1 vehicle and still have carrying capacity. It would make sense to go for something over 3.5t if you're having to get a class 2 licence for a 12tonner anyway. I'd keep the Kangoo as a van that size is handy enough for nipping to get supplies rather than derigging a bucket truck etc.

    Cabins and land are the way to go, be sure to double stack the cabins to save room and always go with steel cabins.

    We've had landlords pull that on commercial lease renewals, especially if ownership of the building has changed. Some of the spaces we've left are still vacant 5+ years later because no one will pay the insane rent they want...and they're usually landlords that are absolute dicks to work with too.

    Don’t get a traffic management vehicle, you won’t need it. If need be traffic management company hire is cheap enough.

    Glad to see you back!! I don't know anything about highways but don't forget that you may need a HGV licence for something bigger.

    I like you’re bayonet and over the trenches attitude, and I can see that whilst it’s hard getting the highways stuff going I can imagine it’s a much better business to scale up as you’re working with specialist equipment and less cowboys turning up working out the back of a car.
