Thank you for this video! I added the Ansix Auto CAN Adapter today. I will feed CAN bus data to the SolorStorm app for autocross. I connect the OBD to my RaceCapture unit, which has a high-speed GPS function. When I used the QStarz it was fidgety and occasionally distracting because keeping everything connected and in sync wasn't always easy.
Have you gotten it setup in SoloStorm yet? I tried to set it up with SoloStorm as well, but looks like you need RaceCapture or something similar first, which connects into SoloStorm. I don't think you can connect the OBD CAN directly up to SoloStorm :(
@@TheBTRGarage I confirmed that Ken Houseal's RaceCapture CAN Bus data points are visible and used by SoloStorm once they are loaded. Works like a charm!
@@TheBTRGarage I consolidated from the MX+ and Qstarz to the Mk2 RaceCapture. That combo was nice but occasionally fussy in terms of syncing consistently.
Thank you so much. The factory OBD-II port on ZD8 BRZ does not have enough refresh rate nor channels for crucial data. Very thorough tutorial on how to get this fixed! Appreciate it!
You rock! Thank you for showing the extra details for entering the PID in Race Chrono! I was pretty sure this setup would work in my Porsche 718 Cayman (grabbing the internal CAN bus and injecting it into my OBD2 port) I have a RaceBox mini, OBDLink LX, and I love Race Chrono Pro. This was the step I was stuck on! So now to get the Porsche community to start reverse engineering the CAN BUS PID's! 🤩👍
Good job! I've driven my cars on the local road course many times but only had very primitive data collection tools - a Garmin GPS watch, a Rexing dash cam and Harry's Dyno phone app!
Great vid Justin! I didnt know you can run the OBD reader through the active sound connector with that jumper harness. Pretty dope. I currently run the KIWI3 in oem obd location with Track Addict and it works decent enough. Then post edit overlays with Race Render. I have that CAN Adaptor bookmarked and will plan to purchase soon. Thank you!
I used to use that same setup previously, TrackAddict with the same GPS and OBD2 module in OEM spot. Also a good setup, but much better analytics with CAN data! I didn't like having to go into RaceRender for post though, too lazy 😆
@@TheBTRGarage yea man, good to know! I agree. The the post editing - sync workflow with Race Render sucks, but once synced, its all good from there. once again thanks again for recommending that CAN bus adapter. Its currently on my "hit" list 😅
When I use RaceChrono with MX+ OBD reader it shows connected but the can bus reader “waiting for data “ can you help me what is the mistake I have done in the PID setup
Thank you Justin! I've ordered the ASC to OBD CAN adapter and other items to get me to an equivalent setup that you have. I'm planning on taking the GR86 premium to Chuckwalla later this year. Other than an HKS L2 cat back exhaust and deleting the charcoal air filter the car is stock. What are your thoughts on just flushing the brake system with ATE TYP 200 DOT 4 brake fluid and keeping the stock brake pads? At this point I'm thinking of tracking maybe twice a year...
Awesome, it's a good setup for sure 👌 I would definitely get better pads for the track, even if it is for a couple events. The OEM pads cannot hold up to the heat.
This setup looks awesome considering the price / flexibility. Any ideas on an easy solution (relatively speaking) to add oil pressure to the datalog / display? I know there's an AEM kit available with a gauge but I'd like it to be logged vs. eyeballing it, ideally in an all in one solution.
It's pretty good! I have actually been thinking how I could get oil pressure into the app. Adding a sensor to my Jackson Racing oil cooler is easy enough, getting the data to the OBD2 adapter is the hard part.
@@TheBTRGarage Agreed. I think your setup is perfect if it's possible to feed oil pressure data in somehow. Not sure if it'll be directly through the same OBD2 adapter or some other method. I am also looking at the AIM Solo 2 DL - seems like it should be possible but I'm completely new to external datalogging / track timing tools. Only experience with this so far is standard OBD2 readouts from my FK8 CTR.
really excellent video but beyond me since I have limited practicality. I use Track Addict which I find great but want to connect it via bluetooth to an an OBD2. Can I just get the OBDLinkMX+? Thanks!
@@TheBTRGarage ah ok, so to get the rest of the data I would just need the ASC port adapter? That might just be within my modest practical capabilities :)
@@TheBTRGarage ok I got the ASC port adapter and will try connecting it tomorrow. I could not get Track Addict to synch with the OBD2 so I'm hoping that using the ASC port might help me with that?
Merry Christmas!! I noticed the phone mount in your link only has a MagSafe mount, but you have a phone clip/tablet attachment. Do you mind explaining/sharing links to get that same setup?
This is so helpful. Thank you so much! Can you share the clip part of the phone mount that you got? Does it go right on the magnetic clip from the original mount? 6:42
@@GoatsGoQuack Yes, the iBolt is just a generic phone mount, which I screwed to the 3D printed backing piece (instead of a magnetic backing piece). If you want to hit me up on IG thejustin01, I can send you photos.

This particular CAN adapter in the video will not work, since the gen1 cars did not have the active sound controller and cable. I am not very familiar with accessing CANbus on the gen1 cars to be honest, I just used an OBD2 bluetooth adapter to gather basic things from OBD when I tracked my 2017 BRZ.

This is one of the coolest GR86/BRZ channels I know of.
Appreciate the comment, trying really hard to provide good info for the 86 community!

hello
do you know if using OBDlink MX+ on OEM port in GT86 2016, I will be able to see:
coolant temp
oil temp
gearbox temp
on iPhone ?
thank you Sir
You might see a few basic things like coolant temp and I think throttle position. There is not much though.

Follow the instructions from RaceChrono, you need to make sure to use CAN Bus style OBD2 MX adapter.
