Less than 24 hours after being in my tank, one of my new little buddies was waving a dead fish at me - one that he had caught. My tank is a live bearers tank so there's plenty of fry to provide live food for him. He's quite something to watch when he's stalking his next victim.
mine keeps my snail population down, i started with 4, now i have 10+. no idea where those small crayfish came from
I have two in my 5 gallon aquarium. Along with two guppies. They've never came into contact with each other but the crayfish do fight if they come face to face with one another. They're very entertaining to watch I love them.
10 g for two
@@ashokbhattaacharjee9577 I moved them to a 20 g and they still fought to the death
That’s so cool you have a fully stocked tank in five gallons! I have 1 guppy and 2 Endlers with a a snail in a 3 gallon
I recently got a dwarf crayfish, and these tips were great and gave a me a better understanding of this animal!
that neon tetra looks like a giant compared to the dwarf crayfish
Right 😂
I just bought one yesterday to keep with my cherry shrimps and I love him so much
Are they safe with shrimp?
@@kyles5960 yes, I have 2x and they are so friendly, fun and active, and only thing is that they steal food from shrimps..
He w e e
He p e e n c h
@@kyles5960 they’re to slow to catch then even though they try.
My crayfish only pray on my ghost shrimp (which I do feed them)but they leave my cherry shrimp and rainbow shrimp alone. I've never seen them pray on my fancy shrimp but that's not saying they won't.
Great video on dwarf crayfish. I just may have to get a couple of these little guys. Thanks for making the video. I subscribed so keep the videos coming.
+Lumpydog
You won't regret it! Keep me updated if you do!
Definitely will👍
Nice video mate. Well narrated and very informative :)
+henderhonk
Wow, thanks 😊
Dude, the more i look at the video the more i am convinced you are mistaking "mm" for "cm". One inch is 25mm, the CPO (Mexican Dwarf Crayfish) is sure larger than 5mm, more like 50mm. It's a honest mistake assuming you are not usually using metric. I apreciate the effort of also putting the size-info in mm. Keep on keeping on.
I adopted one of these from a friend who was very displeased at its behavior. In the few weeks I have been caring for him, I have really taken a liking to him.
I am curious.....
From your experience with these, how often do they molt??
Beware. These are crayfish. They may be small, but they are still killers! I just saw one run into its cave with a cardinal Tetra in each pincher. That's more than $8 worth of fish. For that I could feed myself dinner. Perhaps I'll be having crayfish.
Yes, they can be pernicious
@@myaquariuminfo I noticed you have frogs in guy our tank, I have a blue dwarf coming in a day or so, and I was wondering how it would interact with the cory cats and frogs. (We have 2 in a 40 gallon tank.) We are prepared to give it it's own home if need be, but were curious after seeing your video.
They are more likely to grab dead or dying fish, that cardinal was probably in a weakened state and as such the crayfish was able to grab it
I read that in Gordon Ramsey’s voice.
@@AurelianSkies yeah exactly. Crawdads don't go around grabbing fish to kill lol
Those dwarf crayfish DO really have PERSONALITIES
Mine are really peaceful towards other tankmates (even they don’t attack my shrimps and aren’t territorial to its kind), a bit defensive with fish, and looking cute during the day, but they are MIDNIGHT DISASTER to my plants..
Lately every morning I always found my dwarf sag uprooted, my dwarf hairgrass chewed (only the roots left), and the worst, they torn apart my pinnatifida stems..
Saw this one in the aquarium store the other day. Now im concidering getting it
These are killers, they will kill small fish and shrimp.
George Mahshi Not really, Mine hasn’t killed my neon tetras and the dwarf crayfish is much bigger the the neons
They have them in stock at my lfs so I might get one for my planted tank.
Very nice videos! If I watch too many, you might have me back in the aquarium hobby.
I had a 30-gal acrylic aquarium for about 3 years, but let it go after I got exhausted with replacing fish. The 2 fish that were there from start to finish were the peacock eel and the pleco.
You're providing good information. Temperature and pH are VERY important. Some fish can't coexist because they have very different needs in that regard--and people need to know that. It takes effort to be a responsible aquarist.
I'm gonna subscribe to your channel ... for the good memories and information. I ain't getting another aquarium. :)
Lovely creatures😍
Do they nip fish,I ve some small plecos and I have concerns about them
Hi, great vid. Quick Q, what is the ration between male and female dwarf crayfish? are they ok with 1:1 or must be, say, 2 or 3 females to 1 male?
Do they dig and cut plants like the lobster? Do they attack fishes with long fins such as bettas and gouramis? Are they agressive towards shrimps?
Hello. My cray molted and now seems hurt and can’t stay on his feet or move correctly and isn’t eating. Any advice? I really don’t want to loose him
How was it?
Not current update obviously, cause it's probably gone by now, due to its lifespan
Are they also eating snails ?
very informative vid
Good video I found your channel and thought it was interesting so I subscribed :)
i saw those cute african dwarf frogs :3
Would they be compatible with Plecos? Rubber Lip Plecos in particular
Yes, Plecos will survive but these crayfish will snap on anything it can land its pinchers on.
Can these crayfish live with corydoras?
You just helped me alot
Extremely informative! Thank you!
Why would a dwarf Mexican crayfish have trouble molting and die? All the parameters were correct, can lack of iodine be the problem and if so is the iodine found in kelp from algae pellets enough? Or do you need to dose iodine?
Can I put these guys with corydoras?
Those are African Drawrf Frogs, right? Not Clawed frogs?
Cam I keep one of these in a 10 gallon tank if so which tank mates could I get them?
+Mekong Giant catfish definitely, you could keep about 5 of them in a ten gallon,
Tank mates would be mid level to top level swimmers since crayfish stay at the bottom
But make sure they're not aggressive!
Guppies, platies, neon tetras, hatchet fish.....basically smaller friendly fish
I have two I love them
My dwarf crayfish ate my betta today. He was a new guy, i watched him share a bag with a gourami ok, and then watched my betta swim around his bag and he didn't snap. Watched them both chill on the bottom of my tank until i thought it was safe to take my eyes off of him. Five minutes later I went to check on everyone and I had half a betta. I'm very torn up and wondering if the pet store owner lied to me about the crayfish being a dwarf.
Yeah, doesn't exactly sound like a dwarf crayfish. Dwarf crayfish are not nearly as aggressive as others and are too small and weak to win a fight against a betta.
You shouldn't keep beta or any fish with long flowing fins, it makes it too easy for crays to snatch the fish. Beta & cray bad mix, beta are easy target. Sorry for your loss. Beta are the best & so intelligent & elogant
This sounds really odd. I have CPO's in 2 tanks they even Co exist net to my blue rilies. they are about the same size as a small Neon
Watch this ruclips.net/video/mAlGNY1LcK8/видео.html
Do NOT buy CPO Crayfish. These are killers, they kill anything in sight and they love to kill each other. The reason pet store and breeders want to sell these crayfish is because they are too much trouble. They have a smaller and calmer blue cousin, much more peaceful but not as good looking.
Do they do well on sand? I don't like gravel because sinking foods fall in between and don't get eaten.
+Cobalt
Have you tried keeping loaches? They do a good job about cleaning your substrate.
Yeah, they do perfectly fine in sand.
so helpful
My CPO Mexican Cray had 21 babies near 3 months ago but 3 of the babies never grew much. The "littles' is what I named them are not that much bigger than when they were born and the other babies are normal size about 1" or 1.5". The littles seem healthy and are very active, I was just wondering why they haven't grown?
My crayfish keep having white fungus on them, and they die after a few days. Any advice on my tank and how to remove it?
I'd like to set up a aquarium with these dearf crayfish any suggestions of cheap fish or other animals to keep with it I al ready planned on getting 5 cardinal tetras for a 5 gallon so would crayfish be compatible with other fish too or would the bio load be to high
Definitely going to try to pick a few of these up. I'm hoping to keep them with Chili Rasbora and a Betta. Hoping that the CPO's won't get big enough to chomp the Rasbora. IF they do i'll just move either them or the Rasbora to another tank.
Have you got one yet?
Your Rasboras are already dead, I guess
@@alessandrotavoliere5256 incorrect. I haven't had the time to set up a second tank yet. Life keeps getting in the way. Being an adult sucks.
If I got a 10 gallon planted tank, would a few tetras and 2 ADF's and a snail? Just wondering if this would be overstocked. I would get a school of 6 tetras ( neon or ember)
Hey I know this is an old video but do you think this crayfish would bother a small catfish? I have 2 small 3 inch long banjo catfish I just wonder if they would attack the catfish since they are very passive fosh
how many DWARF CRAYFISH can i have in a 10 gal tank
very nice fish tank
+Killer Shark thank you!
Will it eat bettas
Does anyone know if these guys tear up plants and eat them
I’ve been told to feed lobsters every 3 days!!! I fed them 2 times a day and my tank cycle crashed so bad. Now I’m struggling with fixing that
Are these mexican dwarf crayfish compatible with angelfish and celestial pearl danios? Also, will they eat all sorts of algae off of my carpeting aquatic plants?
Hi! I'd like to get a dwarf crayfish, but I have a bamboo shrimp in my tank, so I was thinking: Would they get along?
The Beginner Aquarist- nope, they will be eaten!
Some keep them together. If you have the right set up in your tank (a TON of hiding space for all) and an abundance of shrimp that they are happy and producing you can keep them together. Some will still be eaten. Shrimp may also prey on the crayfish while malting as well. Its just what you find acceptable or not. If you, like me, dont want to loose any of your valuable shrimp than no. But if you dont mind a little more natural selection behavior going on, then yes.
I have them both in my tank, they pretty much ignore each other, complete different feeding patterns so they don't bump heads
Do u think these guys will kill my clams?
I heard crayfish have a heavy bioload. Is this true, and if so does this apply to dwarf crayfish?
Yeah because of their carnivorous diet. Yes as well but they're so tiny..it shouldn't be too bad.
Are those natural colors?
is there a list of these species somewhere??? I cannot BELIEVE that some are only 4mm.
wait, did you mean 4 cm?
can this co-exist with other bottom feeders like snails and sucker fish?
How many can I have in a community tank (20 gallons, 24x17x13) with a population of guppies, shrimp (cherry red/other) and snails? Are they escape artists? This is for aquaponics and I'd primarily like to use them as scavengers of old food and dead/dying fish/shrimp to be as efficient as possible.
id say 10 max, they can get quite territorial when overcrowded. and they will eat each other. if you're looking for an excellent scavenger, id recommend mystery snails!Sorry for the late reply as i have been on vacation, but i hope this helps! -Gus
@@myaquariuminfo I have 2 cory catfish 15 guppies and 5 cardinal tetras in a 20 gallon can I keep one crayfish along with them as a additional clean up crew
My crayfish was holding her eggs, but I didn't know and move her. I think I might have destroyed some of her eggs but I move her into a new tank and for a few days her eggs were gone. I couldn't find any babies around.
Thank you for the info. I am getting one tomorrow. Where did you get the blackworms? Thanks 😀
I bought a pregnant Mexican crayfish. What can I feed a baby crayfish?
i bought 4 and now i have 10+ after a year
Does this info also apply to the blue Brazos Mexican dwarf crayfish
Hello, Can i keep one blue dwarf crayfish in a community tank with 3 neon rainbows and 2 micro stone catfish? Will there be any dangers?
Anyone know if they would be eaten by a glofish tetra or the other way around?
Can fire belly newts go with them
Nice tank
nice video
what would these be compatible with? spiny eels(tyre track for example) aftican butterfly fish shrimps and so on? I am considering these over a more standard blue crayfish in the hope that it will play nice, and preferably allow more variety of tank mate. given moulting im somewhat dubious on the eels?
definitely not with bigger crayfish, they will eat smaller crayfish. I would keep these with docile community fish that keep off the bottom of the tank. mid level tetras would be great!
Haha the subtitles called them Dorf crayfish!
can i keep mexican dwarf crayfish, some small shrimps, and vampire crabs together in a paludarium?
Have you experienced any cannibalism from the dwarf crayfish? What size tank are you using? Have your crayfish been successful with breeding? If so did you notice any cannibalism from the parents? Thank you!
can I keep them by themselves
Is it safe to put a crayfish with a dwarf crayfish?
Are they compatible with tetras and bettas? And can they coexist with ghost and amano shrimp?
Johanan Micaiah yes... they are too slow to catch any fish. I keep them with my Red Cherry Shrimp and nothing happen.
the crayfish did well with all my shrimp and fish including tetras and bettas. I would rest assured if you mix them(:
I have one like him but he's like neon and its a girl and her name is ember
Can you keep them with bettas? Because I have a female and I feel as if the crayfish will add more excitement to the tank
Also I recently came across your account and the videos are quite amazing keep up the good work you earned yourself a new subscriber:)
can they be kept with crystal shrimps?
Im keeping this for a starter aquarium
Can I keep one of them with mini crabs or Neocaridines shrimps?
If by mini crabs you mean thai micro crabs, I wouldn't recommend it because crayfish are predators and the micro crabs are probably half or 1/4 of their size. They will do okay with adult shrimp but may eat shrimplets.
@@chriscasan thanks!
is the big 2 inch crayfish compatible with small goldfish?and if not, if I want some in a 26 gallon, what fish can I expect to have with them without too many lost?
+Jean-Michel Gervais
The slightly bigger crayfish are not compatible with certain long or wavy finned goldfish. Even though the goldfish are pretty quick
It's usually inevitable to loose your fish to a crazy. The crayfish are patient and will sometimes wait hours in the same position with its claws open....waiting for a fish.
Technically YES you can keep them together but it's kinda risky.
If the goldfish are 2x larger than the cray they should be fine.
Mid level and top level swimmers work best, gouramis, tetras... some cichlids would make good inhabitants.
Good luck!
thank's a lot :) they are so awsome, but yeah, I don't want my goldfish to be attack or kill by the crayfish, so if i have one, it will be with the fish you have suggest me
do you think dwarf crayfish can go with kribensis cichlids?
+cichlidhybrid martel
Very besutiful choice in fish (: do you have any?
And yes as long as the crayfish don't fit in its mouth. However cichlids are pretty aggressive. ...I wound try it, just give the crayfish hiding spaces

thx
good video
+J Daves thank you
Can you mix color varities as long as they are all Mexican Dwarfs? I know I have seen orange and blues for sale and would like one of each for my 10 gallon planted community tank that currently houses a school of 9 celestial pearl danios, a purple mystery snail, and two Nerite Snails
Yes you definitely can just keep In mind that they can be very aggressive at times. I've had some kill other dwarf crayfish. Be sure to provide plenty of hiding spaces
Myaquariuminfo absolutely! Thank you so much! It’s a pretty heavily planted/scaped set up - I’ll be sure to link you to a video when I get the little dudes in there! Love your set up!
In that case you should be just fine👍you might even end up with babies!
Good luck and keep me updated!
I like the Brazos dwarf crayfish
Hard water? Brisk?
Need areation?
Can I keep one or two of these crayfish in a 10 gallon with a dwarf gourami?
They might get eaten!😅
Red Cherry Shrimp are they good tank mates
David n if you have a good colony of cherry shrimp going they can keep it under control
How many crayfish could i keep in a 9 gallon tank with a betta? I think I can only keep one
I say 2 to 3
Hey man I've been having a hard time keeping live plants alive in my tank I switch the dirt and I switch the lighting system but they keep dying before my crawfish control to eat them
What tank mates can I put with one crayfish in a 10 gallon?
+The Animal Expert
For crayfish I usually do at minimum fish that are double the size of crayfish. And top level swimmers work best. I'm a 10 gallon I would use hatchet fish!
Thank you :)
Do you think it's ok to keep these lil guys with an African clawed frog or/and a panther crab.
+DarthJueffJueff 39
I wouldn't recommend it, I've kept them with African dwarf frogs but clawed frogs get a lot bigger. Panther crabs might be able to do a little damage if they fight.
Maybe try an aquarium divider?
Myaquariuminfo k thank you for replying so quickly.
+DarthJueffJueff 39 no prob!
One of mine already has eggs :)
Can you keep a few of these with dwarf Corys and/or shrimp?
Yeah, that sounds okay as long as the dwarf crayfish aren't small enough to fit in the Cory's mouth!
These will eventually decimate your shrimp colony, I had to get rid of them
Hi, do they eat fish fry or shrimps ?
+rudesucker
Shrimp yes, fry very rarely.
They will also fight each other to death sometimes!
Could I be able yo keep one of these with a plakat Betta (short fins) in a 35 gallon planted tank
I really don’t know but my dwarf Mexican crayfish loves to pinch and to try rip the Siamese fighting betta in my tank. If you don’t want it to pinch it just get a bigger tank or try not to put stuff that let’s the crayfish climb and jump onto the betta. Sorry if it didn’t help.
Hi! I'd like to ask a questions. My crayfish lost his right arm. I don't know how,or why, he just molted, so that could be reason.
Will the limb regrow? How long does it take? Can I help him regrow the limb somehow? (food, calcium, etc)
The Beginner Aquarist- it should regrow. Make sure he's getting proper calcium. It should take 2-3 months to grow back
@@bigsky445 Thank you!
The Beginner Aquarist- welcome! You can even buy B grade crays & shrimp for almost half the cost. They are missing limbs, but will grow them back. Also? If they get stressed it can force a molt. Make sure you have lots of hiding spots, lights on no longer than 8 hours a day & calcium. I use dried crushed egg shells, I leave the embryo skin to dry with, added protein. Live plants work wonders too and help stabilize water parameters & PH, water wisteria & mosses are great choices for crays, grows extremely fast & they like to hide in it while molting. Happy cray keeping!
@@bigsky445
Thanks, I'm trying my best! :)
Also thanks for the idea of crushed eggs as calcium supplement, i've started adding some to my tank! How much and how often do you add eggshell to your tank?
As for the hides and plants, there are a lot of hiding places, as well as many plants
(tho for some reason I'm really bad with plants :( . )
@@creepy6208 hello again, I add about a half of an egg shell about every few weeks or until the shells you put in are gone. I also struggled with keeping plants in the tank, even tho my house is full of them! I started dosing fertilizer in my tank & made a huge difference. Make sure whatever fertz you decide on, don't contain copper & are invertebrates safe. Also, make sure your cray has plenty of hiding places & shaded areas.
For some reason they keep dying on me any help would be appreciated
Where can I get Blackworms?
Do you think 5 would be okay in a 30 gallon tank with amanos?
+JR Galore and how big is your tank?
+JR Galore
Hey what's up, my girlfriend actually has that mix up and they do just fine.
Her aquarium is heavily planted though.
amanos explore all over where as the dwarf crayfish tends to stick to the bottom and climb the edges...so I think they should be fine given that you have some plants or rock and drift wood for each to claim.
If you have plenty of hiding spaces I can't see why not, that actually sounds pretty cool (:
+JR Galore
In this video I have 2 dwarfs in a 10 gallon.
I have turned it into a crayfish mini farm however and I'll be posting up a video this upcoming week on it in case your interested in breeding them.

I was thinking about kepping these little guys with pom pom crabs. It seems possible. What do you think?
How do they get along with cherry shrimps?
If you have real CPOs good they co-exist and even feed next to each other without any aggression
They will kill your shrimp colony slowly. Speaking from personal experience
I had 2 of them thet only lasted about 2 days i just realised tht they nedded really gold water
Ghostbadger 239 gold water?
would I be able to feed them earthworms.
Can I keep one female beta fish with 2 dwarf crayfish in a 5g. It's cycled filtered and heated.
+Zakaria B.
Yeah definitely (: Keep me updated!
Myaquariuminfo can one male bettas live with the Mexican crayfish in a 5 gallon
Reyes Vlog probably remember with fish and inverts that are territorial more space and less animals
That's extremely small.. you should go up to a 10 gallon minimum. They are like $12 at walmart. Cray need room to explore & Beta should have a lot of room to swim. Just because they can "survive" in a tiny bowl of water, doesn't mean they are thriving & enjoying life. Also, cray are easily stressed to changes in water parameters, smaller the body of water, your 5g, the easier you can possible loose your crays & beta. 10g will hold parameters longer & more steady. Prob use filter & gravel you already have cycled & seed the new tank for "almost" instant cycling. Happy fishing!
