The Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish (or the CPO Crayfish) is a dwarf species of crayfish from the waters of Mexico. Whether you call them a crayfish, crawfish, crawdad or mudbug, these mini lobsters (or so they appear) are super neat and interesting invertebrates.
The care for these little dwarf crayfish is very similar to that of Neocaridina shrimp with only a few differences. They do prefer a neutral to alkaline ph and they need hard water with lots of calcium to promote healthy molting. They are omnivores that will eat everything from live blackworms and snails to frozen foods, pellet foods and even vegetables. Unfortunately, they will even eat each other if they are cramped for space and are given a good opportunity (finding a fellow cray just after it's molted) and baby crays are highly prone to attacking their newborn siblings as well so plenty of hiding spaces (caves, nooks and crannies) is imperative if you want to keep a group of these mexican dwarf orange crayfish or if you intend to breed them.
Breeding is relatively easy with these guys. All you have to do is provide a proper tank with good water and plenty of hiding spaces, feed them well and make sure you have a male and female.
The male dwarf crawfish will flip the female crayfish over onto her back and hold her down for the mating process. A few weeks later the female dwarf crayfish will be carrying a bundle of little crayfish eggs under her tail. The CPO crayfish mother will carry these eggs for four to five weeks before they hatch.
Once hatched, the baby dwarf crayfish are just like little copies of their parents, claws and all. They can even go right to eating the same foods as their Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish parents.
I put out new videos every Friday morning. My goal is to both inform and inspire you in this awesome fishkeeping hobby!
I'm breeding fish for profit, aquascaping for fun, collecting fish, selling fish and expanding my fish room...and I'm sharing all of it with you!
Thank you so much for all of the support! Every comment, like and subscription is so helpful, not only for RUclips's purposes but also because the positive feedback from you, the fishkeeping community, is what keeps me motivated to keep making these videos.

The Fish Nerd I have a question, can dwarf Crayfish be Tankmates with dwarf frogs?.
how many time female need to have babies
Can I keep these Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish with shrimps
@@pasan.m.jayarathna4962 yes
@@tijan7376 thanks.
I'm branching out in the fish keeping hobby. I started with goldfish and bettas, but I'm getting really into tropicals now! There's not much crayfish information out there, so I definitely appreciate this video.
Thanks Angelica!! :)
goldfish and betta? dont goldfish need to be in 18-22 and betta in like 22-26?
I think the bettas can also eat dwarf crayfish when they molt
@@DragonSkaterrr I dont understand how that went over your head but when she started keeping fish she was keeping Bettas and Goldfish, Beginner fish but now she's expanding her experience and knowledge... Not keeping Bettas and Goldfish with the crayfish what's wrong with your thinking?
Betta fish ARE tropical.
Great steady shots of the crays, good even tone of voice, lots of useful info, etc.
Thanks!! 👍🏼
You keep it interesting, and enjoyable keep up the good work....
Ripp steakface is a fish dude too? Such a versatile man! Twu
Loved your video. I am getting some orange Crayfish myself. Your down to earth, your don’t try to be funny you just tell it how it is. Thank you.
Why thank you!
Great amount of useful info on the dwarf crayfish, I got a few in a tank rescue, and just spotted them "wrestling" and was searching for info, your stream popped up, still relevant info after all these years. Happy Fishkeeping!
That's awesome! Thanks!
If you start a new channel you get to do it all over again. Look at you now with 15K. ;)
Like literally! I feel so needy when I spam, but I still want to get one of your shirts so I still do it 😂
Anywho, I think I'm going to start a cherry shrimp tank to get started on inverts, and then maybe get Mexican crays.
+The Turtle Girl yeah! Do it!
Thank you for this. Really helpful also i love that you don't use background music.😅
The crayfish is a peculiar animal, but you've got some nice setups of the critters where they look like they're just chillin' and skirtin' along. Keep it up! #TheFishNerd
+Kimsotus Orelius yeah they're definitely interesting little critters. Lol
Thanks!!
Haha, lol well this is certainly not the same comment. Is it going to be like last time where it just searches the comments and picks out all the unique users and goes from there, or is it actually solely on comment numbers, aka the more you comment the better your chances?
The Turtle Girl gonna try to get one that does it where each comment is an entry. I didn't realize last time until after I'd done it that it just identified unique users.
Ah I see. Although I actually think that was easier since it's just an equal amount of chances to win :P and then I could put my mind at rest that I have just as much of chance as anyone else and don't have to feel like I need to spam to up my chances lol 😂 well, you're really awesome for doing the giveaway in the first place! 💚
I got 2 baby crayfish from a creek my grandfather owns here in Kentucky. Not exactly sure what species they are but I have had them for about 3 weeks and they just reached the size of the crayfish in this video, although all of our native species get decently large when fully grown. Not sure what behavioral differences would exist between the species, but my crayfish are not afraid to venture out into the tank and generally leave everybody else in the tank alone(this includes my school of guppies that includes fry). I am planning on moving them when they get older because I have a female bristlenose who I want to find a mate for and I am nervous they would attempt to eat any fry that I end up with since they would be so vulnerable. Do you have any suggestions so I can guarantee a long happy life for my crayfish since I am not really that experienced with them and everything up to now has been dumb luck? Right now they live in my 20g that fluctuates between 75 and 79 degrees.
Native crays are a lot more aggressive and territorial so I’d recommend making sure they have good hiding places and room to set up their own spaces away from each other. They’ll get 4-6 inches long.
they do and will tear up plants from the roots mine destoryed my planted tank.
Mine escaped and was instantly eaten by my dog😭
Oh no!!!
The beauty of nature it self🙌🏾
I just found you and subbed. Thank you for this information!! I'm considering orange dwarf crayfish and wanted to learn about them beforehand. Now I'm "this much" closer to a positive decision.
Very informative. BTW.... I see you now have 13.9k subs. Congrats!! 😁
Awesome!! Thanks so much! Glad it helped!
Congrats again on 1k, your killing it. Always look forward to your videos.
+Aqua Apprentice thanks so much Aqua!! Really appreciate all your support!
I think I'm done spamming now, so GREAT JOB CARLOS ON 1K AND HERE'S TO YOUR NEXT ONE THOUSAND SUBS!!! 😀 👏👏👏 🎉🎉🎉
+The Turtle Girl thanks!! 😁👍🏼🎉
This is my first time here, I have enjoyed the entire show. I am appreciative of the fact that you hold the camera on a crayfish and do not swing it around constantly. Anyhow, I think that you are doing a great job and I am anxious to see what you do next!!
Thank you so much!!
Way more entertaining than my cherries.
I literally feel like I'm having a conversation with myself lol...and it feels so awkward. Well, at least it's probably more amusing for others to read than just random comments.
+The Turtle Girl I have conversations with myself all the time. Lol
It's good to see you can have balance in your hobby, family and religion. Stay focused and blessed and I'll catch your next video
Thanks Deacon!! That's the goal. :)
Great informative video! I love little crayfish. So many memories as a kid catching all the big ones out of the creeks.
Dank Tanks thanks man! And hey, crawdad catching ain't just for kids. Lol
I still hunt for em when I'm at a creek. Lol
The Fish Nerd you can say that again. It just seems you always caught the good ones as a kid lol
Dang, I really want to win one of your awesome shirts, but I always feel guilty for spamming :P
+The Turtle Girl lol not spamming when I give permission. Lol
Just don't copy paste the same thing over and over or RUclips will think it's spam and remove the comments. :)
Thanks for the info starting my crayfish tank this week. I have a fifty five gallon tank.
Awesome!! Good luck with it!!
Super cool, the ones near me look terrible I'm afraid to buy one, your crays look so so much nicer! Cool a contest .
Where is everyone ? 💞
Congratulations on 1,000. I just joined so now it is 1,001 😉
Thanks Harley! Glad to have you!
Super informative video, Carlos. I wish I could get another tank for some of these guys...they're just so cute! Congrats on 1k! By the way, I really liked the thumbnail. ;)
Thanks!!! I actually had to clear it with my little sister before I used the term "cray cray." lol
My thumbnails are on fleek! lol
Hi Carlos. Thanks for the useful information. I'm originally from Columbiana, Ohio, but living in Malaysia now. I've just started to get into the hobby so your videos are real helpful.
Congratulations on 1K subs!
I look forward to more future videos.
+Zahirah RLB Elsayed That's awesome! Glad the videos have been helpful! Thanks Zahira!!
you got me thinking about to get some blue crayfish :)
congratz to 1.2k!
+Smeal Kapor The mudbug bug has bitten! Lol
Thanks Smeal!!
I just got a breeding pr of cpo Mexican dwarf crayfish🙂👍🏻
Awesome!! Hope they make a bunch of craybabies!
The Fish Nerd yes! They can make me a crawdaddy 🤣
You'll be such a good grandcraw 😆
The Fish Nerd 🦞👨🏻🦳
Believe me these too damage and uproot the plants, they don't eat away the plants like the bigger crayfishes but they do uproot the plants a lot. Also your snails can't survive with them either. So keeping them in a planted tank is not an option.
They don’t seem to bother my mystery snails. What type of snails did you lose?
I’d have to disagree, my breeding pair does amazing in my planted tank. They get along just fine with my ramshorn family and I haven’t seen a single issue with my plants, I’m fact they’re so amazing at keeping them clean
@@goodpoema9748 Well may be they are young and small in size, the pair that I have were doing good when they were smaller. But when they started growing bigger they became nastier day after day.
Those dwarf crayfish DO really have PERSONALITIES
Mine are really peaceful towards other tankmates (even they don’t attack my shrimps and aren’t territorial to its kind), a bit defensive with fish, and looking cute during the day, but they are MIDNIGHT DISASTER to my plants..
Lately every morning I always found my dwarf sag uprooted, my dwarf hairgrass chewed (only the roots left), and they torn apart my pinnatifida stems
What’s the minimum size tank you can keep these in?
5 gallons
Appreciates every sub. And to bet at 15k subs now. And with the attitude and the hard work i can tell he's putting out I know he's going far and I really hope he surpasses mine and his own expectations. Guy genuinely deserves all the good coming his way.
Great arrangements in your aquarium! Ideal for these orange guys. I'm keeping them on tap water also (polish water is pretty hard) with neocaridina red cherry shrimp. They do tend to dine on shrimp from time to time, yet they reproduce so quickly, so you wouldn't even notice this loss. I love watching how they walk around the tank being very curious.
you know I'm so happy for you and proud to be a part of this great community!!! keep up the great work! love you and God Bless!
Susan for SLC Aquatics thanks Susan!! Love you too!
I need help in what I did wrong! I put in two breeding pairs into my tank, two were juvies, two adults...anyway...my adult mamma moved eggs and released her babies 23 days later. But! In the time, the adult male died, the juvy female died, then two days after mamma released her babies, also died. I do have them in a 20 gallon blue dream shrimp tank. PH 7.4, kh 7, gh 14, temp 72. Im broken hearted! I need some advice on why they died! Its a big tank with plenty of hides, both natural and provided. The babies are alive and moving about, but Im so concerned about them, Ive been sucking a few up and moving them to my red neo tank which has no survivability problem. Please! Why did my crays die? I even hand fed them when they popped out.
Oh! And telling male from female, I find I could easily see the “saddle” of a mature female as well. Both sides of her carapace were bright green in the case of my orange CPO, as were her eggs when she moved them.
Great video! Thanks for the info. Definitely subscribing!
Also kudos to all you who read my whole "comment conversation with myself" 😂😂😛
+The Turtle Girl that's me! Lol
Congrats on a 1000 subs.Keep up the great work.
Awesome video
Thanks Turtle Gee!!
The Fish Nerd 🤓👌🏼
Can we use the crush aragonite or crushed coral substrate stuff that people usually put in saltwater tanks for any crayfish or snail? For some reason my snails always get shell erosion, and that would be bad for them and possibly the crawfish too. I want to have some Mexican dwarfs someday.
Room temperature is fine, anywhere in the 70s... I dunno where you live but growing up around here thats how you start a fight with dad. Room temp in the winter is like 60 degrees hahaha
Lovely creatures😍
Do they nip fish,I ve some small plecos and I have concerns about them
How are they with the snails? I have ramshorns that are starting to lay eggs, I'm afraid of them eating the eggs or baby snails
I have 1 light one & 1dark one like you. Would coloring have anything to do with male/female?
Would khuli loaches with them be a bad idea? I have khuli loaches, but am interested in crayfish
I just started up a 90 liter aquarium white dwarf crayfish with blue color
i have blue phenotype, i see my fish get very very close to it and it never try to grab them like ive seen bigger cray fish would..
Thanks for the Vid, receiving mine in a couple days..... This helped a lot. Keep’em coming.
Awesome!! Hope you enjoy them!
The Fish Nerd Bro I received them today, They’re tiny!!!
What’s the biggest you’ve seen?
Biggest one seen was probably 1.5 to 2 inches. Tops.
Pet store told me 77 degrees for them. Ive been having hell of a time with ammonia im wondering if the heat is doing it
Would they possibly be okay with Bolivian Rams?
My Mexican dwarf cray is amazing, he is super active but I have noticed that something is growing on his outer shell almost like algae. My tank has little to no algae in it so it’s a little concerning. Is this something that I need to watch out for or can it be treated?
I would keep an eye to see if it's still there after he molts.
My cpo eats only bloodworms and boiled vegetables i dont know why he doesnt eat shrimp pellets
I was told that these are not legal to sell in Minnesota anymore. Hope it’s not true because I love mine
I put some in a tank that I had a plecko in and 1 grabbed the pleckos tail and went for a ride 😂
Please change the smooth rocks they seem to have a hard time climbing on smooth surfaces
Thanks for the give away, I really like these quick easy ones!
I have dwarf blue crayfish
Sweet!
Thanks!
I also want to have blue one but it is impossible to find in india.
Just FYI so long as you give credit to the photo source you can post other people's photos
As usual great video, keep them coming! and i really like your tank with all those Malaysian snail.
+Erik Morin Thanks Erik!!
Mine killed & ate my African Dwarf Frog.
Giveaway is the correct spelling XD
Oh gosh I can't spell giveaway right
What should I do if mine isn’t getting to the wafers since the fish are getting it
Oh and I subbed today 9-27-21
where were you able to find all those rocks? i’m thinking about starting an orange crayfish tank myself and those look perfect!
Collected them myself at the river by my in-laws.
I want some of these. They only get 2 inches? That's small. Will they go with Neon Tetras? Thanks
+Jena Tucker Aquariums I would imagine they would. The tetras should be too quick to get snatched. That said, I haven't tried it so proceed at your own risk. Lol
I have hard water, lots of hiding place and they die within 2-3 months, not sure what is wrong. When i have shell breeders, the empty snail shells start disentregrating within that same period, does that mean my calcium level is too low?
Could very well be
ok thanks
Your video is excellent and valuable! I love your passion and enthusiasm for the hobby!
😁
Would these be okay In my planted community tank? Ph 8.2. Neon tetra, galaxy rasboras, and pleco. Temp 76. Only thing is that my nitrates are 40ppm consistently
I would imagine so
Need info on using fertilizer, Easy Green, with a dwarf blue crayfish? No one seems to know if it’s safe with them? I know it’s ok with shrimp, snails and fish I have! 🤷🏼♀️
I haven't tried it but I imagine easy green would be fine. Typically, if it's safe for shrimp, it's safe for crayfish.
Should have thought about the cal. Thanks🎉
Hi man!! I m playing making a 30 l cube for some cpos. I see you don t have plants.you have algae problema without plâns? .because im sick of cleaning algae from my old planted acuarium.. Pls respond..
Just saw your comment (youtube held it for review for some reason).
Plants in general help keep algae from growing as quickly but the main culprit is typically leaving the tank lights on for too long.
I understand more about crawfish now
I want to win lol
I know this is an older video but I am 100% desperate right now. I got a beautiful juvenile Blue Kong crayfish a few weeks ago. He has always been so so active and fun. Today he flipped on his back and lays there. I can roll him over and he can walk or do whatever he wants. Next time I check- he flips back over. I checked the water and everything seems fine. He has calcium and I’m totally lost as to what he’s doing or if he’s dying.
It's honestly really hard to say. Sounds like he's having trouble with a molt maybe?
I have them with angel fish they don’t even bother them.
would fish like neon tetra, swordfish or guppies eat the crayfish babies?
Anything big enough that gets the chance would. Swordtails most likely would. Guppies possibly would.
I'm pretty sure I have soft water. How would I fix that? I have a very balanced planted tank with over a dozen fish. could I throw some egg shells in the back?
Could try that or crushed coral is my preferred method
I was subscriber #356
lol How do you even know that? lol
Why would a dwarf Mexican crayfish have trouble molting and die? All the parameters were correct, can lack of iodine be the problem and if so is the iodine found in kelp from algae pellets enough? Or do you need to dose iodine?
Could be lots of things but too little calcium is probably the most common problem.
Why are people spamming too? lol
+NetherNinja beats me lol
I want to win
I want to win
I want to win
I want to win
Can you mix them with goldfish and plecos?
Water parameter wise, yes. Plecos also yes. Goldfish I would be afraid might pick at them but if not, then you'd be ok, probably.
Can I keep 1 or 2 in my 15 gallon fluval flex with 3 cobra endlers,1 pygmy gourami and 5 xray tetras?
Should be ok as long as them and the gourami get along
I've thought of trying Crayfish, but they're so vulnerable during molts.
+rick howard yeah, but sufficient hiding places takes care of it.
You said that the water temperature affects the length of time till the babies hatch... Can you explain the difference the temps have?
Higher temps = shorter incubation period.
We have an electric blue Male.named Blui.
Hi The Fsh Nerd great movie & info. It is good you keep them in species tank as they can get very agressive in community tanks , check out this clip: ruclips.net/video/qCNKIo9DlcI/видео.html
They will scavenge on dead fish for sure. Looks like what’s going on in that video. It would be really tough for them to catch something as fast as a danio.
Yes that was my thought also, however it happened in front of my eyes. Danio came down to try some food for bottom feeders and was not swimming fast. In this case dwarfs were a bit faster. I seen them even catch plecos right of the plants but plecos manage to get away and come out with minor scratches.
unboxing videos are awesome! great vid. also love how you put religion as the most important part of your life in your bio. god bless ya man! keep making great vids
p.s. I didn't intentionally use a like name to yours, i saw your channel after i created mine and thought "Oh crap! its been taken!" oh well. too late now i guess
Thanks FNV!! Really appreciate it!
I've liked! Your channel is amazing u deserve 10,000 subs at least! I could watch your channel all day(watching u all day is my weekend plans lol)
+fishlover 9 thanks so much fishlover!
The Fish Nerd what's to thank me for it's true
Congrats on the 1k subscriber's keep the videos coming.
+nasphos thanks!! I'm gonna try!
win?
It's funny how close they are the Scorpions but scorpions crawled out of the water millions of years ago?
+Gary Person I'm not sure how closely they're actually related...they got those pincers going though! Thankfully, these guys don't have a wicked stinger for a tail!
Thx im Louis Aquatics in South Africa ive got red and vanilla pair crayfish i try to breed !
Awesome!
My guppy tails are all nipped. I wonder if it is because of the CPO or Amano Shrimps
CPO is the more likely culprit.
