    The Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish (or the CPO Crayfish) is a dwarf species of crayfish from the waters of Mexico. Whether you call them a crayfish, crawfish, crawdad or mudbug, these mini lobsters (or so they appear) are super neat and interesting invertebrates.
    The care for these little dwarf crayfish is very similar to that of Neocaridina shrimp with only a few differences. They do prefer a neutral to alkaline ph and they need hard water with lots of calcium to promote healthy molting. They are omnivores that will eat everything from live blackworms and snails to frozen foods, pellet foods and even vegetables. Unfortunately, they will even eat each other if they are cramped for space and are given a good opportunity (finding a fellow cray just after it's molted) and baby crays are highly prone to attacking their newborn siblings as well so plenty of hiding spaces (caves, nooks and crannies) is imperative if you want to keep a group of these mexican dwarf orange crayfish or if you intend to breed them.
    Breeding is relatively easy with these guys. All you have to do is provide a proper tank with good water and plenty of hiding spaces, feed them well and make sure you have a male and female.
    The male dwarf crawfish will flip the female crayfish over onto her back and hold her down for the mating process. A few weeks later the female dwarf crayfish will be carrying a bundle of little crayfish eggs under her tail. The CPO crayfish mother will carry these eggs for four to five weeks before they hatch.
    Once hatched, the baby dwarf crayfish are just like little copies of their parents, claws and all. They can even go right to eating the same foods as their Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish parents.
    I put out new videos every Friday morning. My goal is to both inform and inspire you in this awesome fishkeeping hobby!
    I'm breeding fish for profit, aquascaping for fun, collecting fish, selling fish and expanding my fish room...and I'm sharing all of it with you!
    Thank you so much for all of the support! Every comment, like and subscription is so helpful, not only for RUclips's purposes but also because the positive feedback from you, the fishkeeping community, is what keeps me motivated to keep making these videos.
    God bless ya, Fish Nerds! I will see ya next time!!

    I got 2 baby crayfish from a creek my grandfather owns here in Kentucky. Not exactly sure what species they are but I have had them for about 3 weeks and they just reached the size of the crayfish in this video, although all of our native species get decently large when fully grown. Not sure what behavioral differences would exist between the species, but my crayfish are not afraid to venture out into the tank and generally leave everybody else in the tank alone(this includes my school of guppies that includes fry). I am planning on moving them when they get older because I have a female bristlenose who I want to find a mate for and I am nervous they would attempt to eat any fry that I end up with since they would be so vulnerable. Do you have any suggestions so I can guarantee a long happy life for my crayfish since I am not really that experienced with them and everything up to now has been dumb luck? Right now they live in my 20g that fluctuates between 75 and 79 degrees.

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  6 лет назад

      Native crays are a lot more aggressive and territorial so I’d recommend making sure they have good hiding places and room to set up their own spaces away from each other. They’ll get 4-6 inches long.

    Believe me these too damage and uproot the plants, they don't eat away the plants like the bigger crayfishes but they do uproot the plants a lot. Also your snails can't survive with them either. So keeping them in a planted tank is not an option.

    Those dwarf crayfish DO really have PERSONALITIES
    Mine are really peaceful towards other tankmates (even they don’t attack my shrimps and aren’t territorial to its kind), a bit defensive with fish, and looking cute during the day, but they are MIDNIGHT DISASTER to my plants..
    Lately every morning I always found my dwarf sag uprooted, my dwarf hairgrass chewed (only the roots left), and they torn apart my pinnatifida stems

    Great arrangements in your aquarium! Ideal for these orange guys. I'm keeping them on tap water also (polish water is pretty hard) with neocaridina red cherry shrimp. They do tend to dine on shrimp from time to time, yet they reproduce so quickly, so you wouldn't even notice this loss. I love watching how they walk around the tank being very curious.

    I need help in what I did wrong! I put in two breeding pairs into my tank, two were juvies, two adults...anyway...my adult mamma moved eggs and released her babies 23 days later. But! In the time, the adult male died, the juvy female died, then two days after mamma released her babies,also died. I do have them in a 20 gallon blue dream shrimp tank. PH 7.4, kh 7, gh 14, temp 72. Im broken hearted! I need some advice on why they died! Its a big tank with plenty of hides, both natural and provided. The babies are alive and moving about, but Im so concerned about them, Ive been sucking a few up and moving them to my red neo tank which has no survivability problem. Please! Why did my crays die? I even hand fed them when they popped out.
    Oh! And telling male from female, I find I could easily see the “saddle” of a mature female as well. Both sides of her carapace were bright green in the case of my orange CPO, as were her eggs when she moved them.

      Just saw your comment (youtube held it for review for some reason).
      Plants in general help keep algae from growing as quickly but the main culprit is typically leaving the tank lights on for too long.

    I know this is an older video but I am 100% desperate right now. I got a beautiful juvenile Blue Kong crayfish a few weeks ago. He has always been so so active and fun. Today he flipped on his back and lays there. I can roll him over and he can walk or do whatever he wants. Next time I check- he flips back over. I checked the water and everything seems fine. He has calcium and I’m totally lost as to what he’s doing or if he’s dying.

      It's honestly really hard to say. Sounds like he's having trouble with a molt maybe?

    would fish like neon tetra, swordfish or guppies eat the crayfish babies?

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  6 лет назад

      Anything big enough that gets the chance would. Swordtails most likely would. Guppies possibly would.

    I'm pretty sure I have soft water. How would I fix that? I have a very balanced planted tank with over a dozen fish. could I throw some egg shells in the back?

    • @TheFishNerd

      Could try that or crushed coral is my preferred method

    Why would a dwarf Mexican crayfish have trouble molting and die? All the parameters were correct, can lack of iodine be the problem and if so is the iodine found in kelp from algae pellets enough? Or do you need to dose iodine?

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  4 года назад

      Could be lots of things but too little calcium is probably the most common problem.

    Can you mix them with goldfish and plecos?

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  4 года назад

      Water parameter wise, yes. Plecos also yes. Goldfish I would be afraid might pick at them but if not, then you'd be ok, probably.

      Should be ok as long as them and the gourami get along

    I've thought of trying Crayfish, but they're so vulnerable during molts.

    You said that the water temperature affects the length of time till the babies hatch... Can you explain the difference the temps have?

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  4 года назад +1

      Higher temps = shorter incubation period.

    Hi The Fsh Nerd great movie & info. It is good you keep them in species tank as they can get very agressive in community tanks , check out this clip: ruclips.net/video/qCNKIo9DlcI/видео.html

    • @TheFishNerd
      @TheFishNerd  6 лет назад

      They will scavenge on dead fish for sure. Looks like what’s going on in that video. It would be really tough for them to catch something as fast as a danio.

    • @krakenshrimps1584
      @krakenshrimps1584 6 лет назад

      Yes that was my thought also, however it happened in front of my eyes. Danio came down to try some food for bottom feeders and was not swimming fast. In this case dwarfs were a bit faster. I seen them even catch plecos right of the plants but plecos manage to get away and come out with minor scratches.

    My guppy tails are all nipped. I wonder if it is because of the CPO or Amano Shrimps

    • @TheFishNerd

      CPO is the more likely culprit.
