I bought a trio of honey gouramis for my 20g, but two of them started picking on the "third wheel" so I moved her into a 6g and she's so much happier. Very cute and curious fish. She shares it with cherry shrimp and ramshorn snails. Her name is Sunny.😊
That's really interesting to read. I'm currently starting up a new aquarium at home, it's about 8 gallon and I plan to have shrimps in it. I've always loved gouramis, but have always been thinking about them as fish that wants to be in a group and that my aquarium would be to small for that. In my aquarium I also have a lot(!) of plants and a big root where the fish and shrimps will be able to hide, so it should be a fun aquarium, just a bit small, but at the moment I can't have anything bigger.
I have a Pea Puffer in a 5 g in my kitchen. His name is Waldo because when I got him, he was so small that he was hard to find hiding in his plants. So we always asked , "Where is Waldo?" (based on the children's book of course.) Waldo loves small snails and frozen brine shrimp. He is not shy any more and always comes to the front of the glass to say hi. We all love this little cutie with his big personality.
Sparkling gourami are just the best. They are the fish that got me back into the hobby as an adult and I have been enjoying them ever since. From my experience as long as your tank has a ton of plants and hiding spots they won't hide on you. In fact, my sparkling gourami greet me every time I go near their tank! So much personality in such a cute and tiny frame. Love them.
We have a Honey Gourami, a 6 pack of Chili Rasboras and a fleet of Pygmy Coryadoras. Perfect tank. ❤ The tank is decorated with 4 types of Anubias, 3 types of Bucephalandra, Taxiphyllum, cryptocorne albida and a few other plants. Everyone is happy!
I'll keep bettas again when the species as a whole gets hardy and strong again. They used to live 6 or 7 years. Now you're lucky to get 2 years out of them.
I agree, but it depends on the breed. I couldn't keep anything with big fins like the elephant ears past 1 1/2-2 years. I got a samurai I've had for 4 and a koi betta for 2 going on 3. Smaller fins are the way to go.
I have kept all of these cuties at one time or another. I currently have 2 colonies with 6 Sparkling Gourami in each. They are so beautiful. I love hearing them croak at night too. I like to think that means they are happy 😊
I have four sparkling gouramis in my 20 gallon along with some Harlequin rasboras. The sparkling gouramis are so pretty, especially when the light hits them right and their eyes and fins shine a brilliant blue. A very accurately named fish, that's for sure!
My next nano tank is going to be a sparkling gourami alongside a school of CPDs! I love that they share somewhat similar color patterns (red along the fins and the spots on the gourami’s fins almost mimic the spots on a CPD). I love the idea of the sparkling gourami as the slightly larger centerpiece - it’s like it’s the King of its CPD counterparts!😁
RE: fun fish names. Any time I had a tank, one of them was chosen to be named Alyoisius Fishus. The other ones had whatever other name I was feeling but there must always be an Alyoisius Fishus.
I have had pea puffers. Loved them and currently have one honey gourami in one tank and a fire red color one in another tank. The honey is sweet and the red is a stinker. Chases my flight tetra all over the tank
You’re the one who inspired me to own a ram. I have a beautiful Bolivian ram in my 20g went with the original name of Rami. I know the video was about smaller tanks but I know how much you love rams too! 💜🐠💜
I currently have a spoiled pea puffer in a 10g. I say spoiled because I feed him frozen food with tongs. He will not go to the bottom to retrieve food. Helps keep the tank much cleaner. I’ve kept sparkling gouramis in a community tank, but they did not fair well. But I truly love them.
“Why you don’t wanna get a betta? I don’t know…” Ha ha 😂 Right? But thanks for the ideas in case my betta follows in the footsteps of the plague in my house (fingers crossed no), but I know me and it will be hard not to just get another betta! 🤣🐠😂 Beautiful ideas!
Thanks, you too! Unfortunately I might be looking at euthanizing poor betta Severus, but sometimes that’s a relief for all. Plus also likely fish shopping. Have a great long weekend!!
@@thesmallscape Thank you! It’s been a few weeks since I lost anyone (betta excluded) so debacle cleared, I think. Taking time to tweak a few setups and buy some new fish, which is more fun. And you, too! Have a great weekend!
I was looking into the possibility of getting a honey gourami for my 15 gallon tank....well you got me decided! How cute are they!! i love those little arms too :D
I am enjoying my honey gourami in a community tank. Next week I am going to add a sparkling gourami to the tank. I have a plan B for the sparkling gourami if they don't get along with the other gourami, neon tetra, Corydoras, bristlenose, and platys.
I have kept all of these except for the honey gourami. The scarlet Badis are my favourite, due to their behaviour and striking colours, they want a lot of space for a tiny fish, if you're wanting to keep multiples, I get this video isn't about that, but hey, information is power. As for the little peas, I kept a group of six for about a year in a 20 gallon and they did just great. they had a baby guppy that got in on a plant, but that evaded my capture and theirs for the whole time they were together. The guppy used to steal the food right out of the puffers mouths and swim freely with them. i don't condone doing this as it may end in a bloodbath. I would just like to point out though, that just because something has worked for others, does not mean that it will work for you. I have found that fish, whilst most don't acknowledge them as sentient beings, I do believe they have memories and individual character traits.
Love the Saturday morning video! I currently have sparkling gouramis in a small tank, love them but they can have a bit of an attitude with each other lol
Hi!!! Happy Saturday!! Yes they can be tough little cookies! And fun fact, I always think if you whenever I look at any gourami. ☺️ I forget - are you going to Daytona?
I love the idea of a honey gourami in a saltwater decorated tank! I'm on the salty side of nano tanks and all I keep are corals and shrimp at 4 gallons There's always someone who wants to do a yellow tang in a nano and I'll probably suggest the honey gourami to them
I put 2 plecos in with my red betta to keep him company. He couldn't care less about them 😅. My blue betta shares with corys, guppies, and a disabled fancy goldfish and enjoys that. He loves his goldfish "sister" in an annoying younger brother way 😂 I wish I could put her in one of my goldfish tanks but they all pick on her 😮
I am not one to follow trends, and puffers are very trendy right now. That said, I may have to try the pea puffers. Like the betta species, they actually have personalities and will interact with the keeper.
Did a 16 gallon with one dwarf blue ram. His name was Spike. Was really fun and something a little different than the betta I would normally keep in a tank that size. People were always asking what he was.💚💜💙
After losing two Bettas within a couple months, I chose a Honey Gourami for one of our 20 long tanks. His name is Charlie and he's adorable☺ Thank you for the recommendation!
The gourami are great fish for a small planted tank. Not many fish like being by themselves, esp. the small ones. If you go pairs though the list grows expansively. 🙂
Sparklers are some of my favorites mentioned. Cannot recommend a better "lurker" in a single-kept, planted tank. Always going to be poking around out from underneath or behind something, or acting like they are. Bettas might be "the cool kids", but sparklers are the "goth kids". It's like they're always up to no good. Cool video!
How true! I have seen my sparkling gouramis many times swim up and study one of the ramshorn snails in my tank, then knock it off a leaf and then just swim off for absolutely no reason. A loveable troublemaker, I guess!
I have kept sparkling and honey gouramis, also scarlet badis. Loved all of them. Beautiful and lots of personality. I second you on the warning about scarlet badis' eating habits. I learned that the hard way, and wound up breeding fruit flies so I could feed him the maggots. He loved those. The gouramis were a lot less fussy.
I’ve kept all of these except the pea puffer and peacock gudgeon. They are on my wish list though. I want to do a nano tank in a 20 or 29 gallon with chili rasboras, clown killis, cod’s, scarlet badis and sparkling gouramis.
I hope you may consider making a video about nano fish for a 5/10 gallon that like living alone but without a heater! I'm struggling to find coldwater species for my 5 gallon
The pea puffers are on my list. They're the next ones that I'm going to get. Yeah, i can't wait. I do have a suggestion for you....the African dwarf frog. I have 2 of them but can be kept alone. They are so cute and have a great personality. I will put their food between my fingers and put it down in the tank and they will come eat out of my hand. Its sooo cool. I can pet them to. It took a few weeks for them to realize that my hand equaled food, but once they did, they quit zooming away. And then in no time they were coming up to my hand. They do like to hide when they're sleeping, but when awake they are out and about and they will zip to the top and zip back down. They're fun to watch.
@@realangiechrist I have mine with 5 long finned danios. 1 gold and 4 blue. And then I have 2 very old male guppies and 4 Corydoras. I have a 20 gallon long so there's plenty of room. The frogs are not bothering anything. Sometimes they will snuggle up with one of the Corydoras at naptime and sleep away. Of course they are under a leaf of a crypt thinking you can't see them, but you can. 🤫 Shhhh don't tell them. LOL
Honey gourami were the first fish I got last year when I set up my first tank and they're one of my favorites. I had a reverse trio in a 20 tall with some albino cories, they did really well and even bred a few times before the female died suddenly earlier this year. I'd consider adding one to my 6gal bookshelf tank with my neon blue rasboras if I didn't already have shrimp in there.
Great picks! My previous Betta was named Waffles😊 A little boy at the LFS picked out the name:) So cute❤. I have two honey gouramies, each in their own community tank. I think PeaPuffers are ridiculously adorable. I have not graduated to live fish food yet though
Have only kept honey gourami my group was aggressive (didn't matter where i tried them in the fishroom) ended up rehoming them only gourami species I've disliked so far.
Happy The Small Scape Saturday! 😊 You always make me laugh….“I don’t know, where was I?…” 🤣😂 I’ve owned the honey gourami (lost it this year). At some point I’d like to try the peacock gudgeon. So far I’ve stayed away from live foods, so that limits some choices. Love those cute pea puffers though! Have a great day my friend! 🤗 💚
Awesome video Joanna! I was wondering what your favorite size of rimless cube tanks are for aqua scaping and any suggestions on manufacturers you've had good luck with? Your scapes are amazing!
I would love a Honey Gourami or a Pea Puffer. Currently thinking of making a Honey Gourami my centerpiece fish in my 20 gallon. Thought it would be nice with Harlequin Raboras. Gina
I put 6 sparkling gouramis in a heavily planted tank but I don't know if they are all still alive because they hide so much that I've only managed to see 2 at the most at a time. 😢
Newbie here and gathering info for a nano tank 5-8 gal. Will one Honey Gourami do well with Cherry Shrimp? If so, how many shrimp will the tank accept without disturbing the fish? Thanks for your insights.
10 gal. I have 3 galaxy Rasbora and 1 mystery snail right now cuz just set up tank 10 days ago. Plan to get 1 honey gourami. Can’t decide if I should get 3 more CPDs or like 5 chili Rasbora. Or can I do all those in 10 gallon? And one clown pleko?
I don’t like the idea of solitary confinement for a fish. It’s not natural and inhumane. I keep peaceful little fish with my Betta’s. Ember tetra’s, Pearl Danios, Neon Tetra’s, Mystery Snails. I also don’t believe in tiny bowls for a Betta. 5 gallon or bigger is best with heat and filtration. Think of how you’d feel in solitary confinement with no interaction with others. 😢
If you really want to lean into the fake-marine idea, how about some freshwater shrimp and snails pretending to be salt? Put in some fake corals, and voila! not-actually marine tank here we come. That's actually a highly entertaining idea. I'm not sure I'd put dwarf shrimp in with the honey gourami though. Gouramis tend to pick at shrimp even if they're too big to eat. One gourami and lots of shrimp with lots of hiding places might work though.
I just got a trio of sparkling gourami for a cube tank that has an orphan dwarf anchor cat and cherry shrimp. They can and will hunt in packs! They're going after the berried female shrimp.🥲
@@thesmallscape no, as I had no idea they were so predatory! I was worried more about bullying among themselves! I haven't seen any of the shrimp fry or adults in the tank. I had at least a dozen visible fry and 6 adults. They're either hiding really well, or... But I have a tank cycling right now for blue dream shrimp. I guess I'll move them there and get a new tank for my now on hold shrimp order...😅
I have kept sparkling gourami as a group and as an individual. As a group, and not in a bedroom is my favorite way to keep them because they make noises that totally seem way too big for the size of the fish, but my lone sparkling gourami (a female) didn’t make any sounds.
@@nerdycanuck1234 Dither fish are typically fish that swim around the top of a tank, a behavior that reassures more timid fish that no predators are nearby, and are found naturally in the same habitat as the other fish in the aquarium, thereby encouraging them to relax and engage in normal behaviour.

I would like to keep pea puffers, but I want a heavily planted tank, and I’m afraid that the brackish water would not suit most aquatic plants.
We’ve only kept pea puffers (adorable and so entertaining!) in freshwater and they’ve done great along with all of our plants.
Hi friend! I don’t blame you with the live foods. Hope you have a great weekend! I’m enjoying the last of summer but also looking forward to fall ☺️
@@thesmallscape Glad you’re enjoying the last bits of summer! I am having a good weekend…it’s my birthday weekend! 🥳
@@cherylbelott Happy Birthday!!!! 🎉 What day specifically?
@@thesmallscape Thanks! It was Aug 25th. 😊
Great video, thanks for the ideas. Love them.
Thanks so much! Hope you’re having a great weekend!
@@thesmallscape,
Thank you, and you guys as well.
Were packing boxes, getting ready for our move from Indiana to Arizona. Stay Blessed!
I've scarlet badis live with apistol in 10g
If you move up to a 20-gallon you could try a single Paradise Fish.
Yes! Someday I hope to have a paradise fish … ☺️
I would love a Dwarf smiling/flag Acara. I currently have a 20 long with 8 Herlequins and 3 Otocinclus cat fish and am wondering what add.
Awesome video Joanna! I was wondering what your favorite size of rimless cube tanks are for aqua scaping and any suggestions on manufacturers you've had good luck with? Your scapes are amazing!
I don't think Cecil is a good name for a fish, I think it's a good name for a seagull... "Cecil the Seagull"
I would love a Honey Gourami or a Pea Puffer. Currently thinking of making a Honey Gourami my centerpiece fish in my 20 gallon. Thought it would be nice with Harlequin Raboras. Gina
what do you mean by "stinkers"?
:) nice name
I put 6 sparkling gouramis in a heavily planted tank but I don't know if they are all still alive because they hide so much that I've only managed to see 2 at the most at a time. 😢
I really wanna do a tank with any of the fish on this list, but I’m not sure if I can own a tank with no shrimp!
Newbie here and gathering info for a nano tank 5-8 gal. Will one Honey Gourami do well with Cherry Shrimp? If so, how many shrimp will the tank accept without disturbing the fish? Thanks for your insights.
👍👍👍
💚💚💙💙
✨💚✨
Would an HG and some green neons be crowded in a 10g? Would a sparkling be better with neons ?
Wow! Honey gourami would sure be pretty with green neons! A sparkling gourami would be fun too. In a 10, I’d do maybe just 6 green neons. ☺️
❤
I don’t want a betta because they get dropsy if you look at them wrong💯💀
A lot of health problems popping up now. 😩
😊Badis not Betta for me.
Honeys are the worst, boring, no personality, dull look/coloration but to each they’re own I guess.
I just got a trio of sparkling gourami for a cube tank that has an orphan dwarf anchor cat and cherry shrimp. They can and will hunt in packs! They're going after the berried female shrimp.🥲
Ya. That’s sad. Backup plan? Those little gouramis sure can be stinkers!
I just upgraded my 2 Pea Puffers from a 5G to a 10G tank. They love it!!!
I've always wanted a pea puffer or 2. How did your 2 do in the 5 gallon? Mine will be well planted.
@@lynnbonica4342 Start out with 3. See what happens. Make sure the tank is well cycled bfore getting them!!
I have kept sparkling gourami as a group and as an individual. As a group, and not in a bedroom is my favorite way to keep them because they make noises that totally seem way too big for the size of the fish, but my lone sparkling gourami (a female) didn’t make any sounds.
apistogramma would be great in a 10 gallon, plus you can add other schooling small fishes like boraras brigitae as dither fish
what is a dither fish?
@@nerdycanuck1234 Dither fish are typically fish that swim around the top of a tank, a behavior that reassures more timid fish that no predators are nearby, and are found naturally in the same habitat as the other fish in the aquarium, thereby encouraging them to relax and engage in normal behaviour.
I love ypur scaping! 10/10 everytime😍
