They name them like marijuana strains, ' Bubble Gum Space Alien Strawberry crossed with a Watermelon Twist '. the guy at the party has that. everyone willl want to smoke or buy it. hahahaha
I have always been a fan of swordtails. I do have a colony of red albino hifin and cauliflower. I just purchase a pair of veiltail. Male is a pineapple and female is orange to interbreed with my colony. Wouldn’t mind mixing the genetic make up a bit to diversify it.
I love them all. I had a big group of Swordtails at one time and am down to one male. I feel like they were a tad aggressive and kind of lost interest. I rehomed most and the ones I kept have passed due to age. This just may have inspired me to keep more again just for the sheer beauty!
I really like Platys. Have to get some of that version. I have a small group of mix colored now living with my Hatchetfish and Nerite snails in a 20gal. They will be rehoused into a 40 breeder when it's ready for fish.
Dan Hodnett is to be commended for trying to source healthy fancy swordtails! Prices reflect the difficulty of maintaining and sourcing these lines. Cauliflower line originated in China .Germans have always taken them seriously. Indonesia seems to be a center of breeding. Black eyes would be my preference over RREA albino.
So i was watching one of your videos and saw you have marosathernia ladigesi for sale at dans fish, i just ordered some without having seen them ever before (i did do research beforehand) so i was wondering if you’ve had them or have anything to say about them! Thanks
I like the colors but am looking for something longer swords established males. I am sure there are some guys in Florida that probably have em but i am in Cali so i will keep looking. Thanks. With the livebearers you want a think established female and male long swords fish for the best stock Kind of hard to see unless you see in person. Nice fish though. That one male hamburg is nice . You should get a trio. Good catch Bob.
The Seller has a nice collection of "fancy" swordtails (mainly off-shot of classic (delta) hi-fin morphs) and his quarantine process is where added-value lies. This being said, most females have already been impregnated, so in regards to selectively-breeding, only males can be utilized. The second point is that those fish are from foreign imports, probably sourced in south/east Asia. Nothing wrong with that, yet buyers ought to be aware of what it means; they are commercially mass-produced fish. Purchasing those at $300 a pair is OK if one can afford them, but they will swim in their tanks for one more year maximum, and even if they were to produce some fry, going to F2 and further requires strict selective breeding programs. Bottom line, one does not need to pay $300 per pair to obtain quality breeding stock - in essence just a pair with virgin female... Free country though. Happy fish keeping.
Everything you assumed about these fish/strains is wrong 😳 They don't come from Asia, they are not being commercially mass produced. They certainly live longer than a year lol.
@@SteenfottAquatics - Thank you for your reply. You might have misunderstood my comments. Those are healthy OK specimens, fancies strains being such a rarity in the trade anyways. I rarely assume anything, rather share opinions gained from experience. Those specimens are of breeding age, their lifespan is roughly two years with one year left for breeding. If virgin females, deduct 25 to 28 days for gestation. Rationally speaking, one may secure three or four drops. Selective lines are not so fertile and prolific, and require constant culling. After that, the female will go "dry" and start wasting away. I have strictly been breeding hi-fin "fancies" for close to twenty years as a hobby, and painfully know what it takes to maintain and selectively improve lines. Some of the stock displayed may be hobbyists-bred or even of Western European sources, yet at least some lines displayed are (or F1) from Indonesia. Particularly the rubynose variatus platies and the white albino pineapple veiltail female couple to albino pineapple hi-fin male. Those are recent imports. We can agree to disagree, no need to be defensive. K - Miamiswordtails.
@@miamiswordtailst2176 Wasnt being defensive, just correcting the assumptions. These came from a hobbyist who has also been breeding live bearers for many years. I took a peak at your channel. Your Low-fin red alpha swordtails look amazing.
Does anyone know if Dan is Mormon? I live in utah and he gives me Mormon guy vibes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I’m mostly just curious.
@@SteenfottAquatics he’s an awesome guy! I’ve known a lot of really awesome Mormons in my time and they all remind me of Dan’s vibe. Just stoked, sort of nerdy, and all around good dudes.

What stunning healthy fish. Beautiful 🐠
Really nice healthy specimens, a joy to the eye.
Beautiful swordtails. Any lyretails? Back in the 70’s we called the reds (red velvet).
Dan, your fish are amazing, I wish you were in Canada.

My green swordtails were super aggressive and since then I’ve been turned off by all swordtails. Until now that is. They all were pretty chill.
