- This is the second time it's let me down! First time we replaced the battery. This required more diagnosis. DIY fix for £27 ($37). Well happy. :)

Wow you are a wizard at fixing this stuff. I'd be totally dependent on the dealerships. Wish you were nearby. I have a 2019 Giulia QV with 21K miles. So far no problems. I considering the purchase of a 2019 Stelvio QV. Love these cars.
Hi Charles.... If you are in the UK???? NJS Alfa near Pershore or Celtic Tuning in Cornwall are both brilliant.. Regards.. Rog
To be honest Charles this has been the only real issue with the car in 18 months of ownership. Best of luck with yours and a happy new year to you. Ed
Hello, From America here👋 I really do appreciate your video. This really helps us figure out our problem it has been a pain in our side for at least a month now. We dont have an Alfa dealership where I live and I have to take it 3 hours away. I'm thankful I have a mechanic though thats 45min away that can work on it and Alfa is all he works on, but he is like a month out for getting it in. I'm afraid of doing the work myself only because I just don't want to accidentally fuck something up. My warranty was up the beginning of this year so that's where I'm at with this. I just had my sunroof repaired because it wouldn't close. And that cost me 1600 dollars for a guiding tube malfunction thankfully it wasn't the motor he said it would have been upwards to 4000 to 5000 replace. Again, Thank you for the video, sorry for being so long winded. Have a great day.
Kudos to you for diagnosing and fixing yourself. Research pays.
Though, as I’ve had similar with both my BM, and a previous Audi, and also my wife’s Honda in the past, please don’t blame the Italians 😉 😁
Yes. It’s just a car after all. I’m all for the DIY fix or initial diagnostics. Car is now out of warranty so I’ll need to do as much myself as possible. 😁 Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero Problem with modern cars, there’s so much to go wrong. I think it’s amazing that more doesn’t.
Happy new year, hope it’s one full of driving joy 🍻
Excuse me , stop calling it Italian crap , how dare you , lots of cars have problems😡
You know, the thing is all cars have troubles at some point in their life. Just because your car had an issue starting doesn't mean the car company is worth trashing. I have a 2018 Stelvio Quadrifoglio, have no problems with it, and I love this car. Would not trade it in just because there was a small problem with it. I will buy another one some day. A car is just like a house, you are going to have to put money in it some where a long the line. Alpha Romeo has been around for a long time, like since 1909 I believe, I like this brand of car, keep making them. God bless from the USA.
I’m not trashing the company. It’s perhaps my sense of humour. All done tongue in cheek!! 😂😂 I love our Alfas (plural) and our Maserati. Don’t take it too literally my friend. It’s just content. I’ve had the QV for 2 years now and if you see my other content you’ll see that it’s going nowhere soon. Thanks for watching. Ed
I couldnt agree more man. Im supposed a BMW is faultless car,,Right. Or a Merc. Audi..yea Right. Not to mention how many recalls have these cars had??
Great fault finding and information, so glad to see you got her back up and running again. As that relay seems generic I might grab myself a spare for mine
It’s an Omron ‘normally open’ relay apparently. I’m sure it’s available directly through electronic suppliers. Let me know if you find an equivalent. Cheers. Ed
Brilliant detective work. I am glad that you have now forgiven your Italian beauty and am so pleased you got it sorted for only £27.00. I have a feeling that Alfa spares department's are now suddenly going to have a run of sales for this Quadrifoglio relay as owner's buy one for a just in case senario.
Yes it will survive auto trader for another little while. 😂😂 Ed
I saw the same thing happen on a standard Gulia , in a video that's so crazy just the cheap relay cause so much chaos, thanks for sharing that's very helpful
Having the same issue recently. Need to get it checked out soon. It's just hard to get those parts in the state without going to a dealership
Are there not some specialists around? I know however that Alfas aren’t particularly well catered for over there. You could also swap out the relays from under the trunk cover. They’re the same. Ed
Great job mate! That was great troubleshooting, and I know the feeling of victory!
Yes. Much better than a tow to the stealer for them to tell me there’s no fault found and £130 for diagnostics even before they do any work. It was worth a go to swap the relay out since I knew the battery was good (previously changed) next step would have been the battery charge module (bcm) which can go on these as well. Thanks for watching and if you haven’t subscribed already then if you wouldn’t mind. Ed
Subscribed mate, keep up the great content!
I've had loads of error codes pop up on my Giulia before. This happened after my car battery went totally flat - so flat that one of my chargers wouldn't even touch it. Upon recharging I got most of the codes I think I saw in your video. I was told by a friend not to panic and just switch the car on and off a few times doing a steering lock-to-lock sweep as you also did. After about 3 restarts everything settled down and no ongoing issues. I have the impression that letting the battery get low in voltage in an Alfa Giulia (or disconnecting it) can get the logic circuits confused and risks losing its default calibrations. You simply have to go through the procedure of a few restarts to get it happy again - so long as it restarts! [well done for your detective work] As a tip, I would strongly recommend owners to use a battery saver if changing a battery (keeps the circuits powered temporarily at 12V while you swap over the battery) and I also use a battery maintainer/charger whenever the car is in the garage and I know I'm not going to drive it for a week or more. The electronics consume quite a bit of power when everything is "off" so don't imagine you can leave it untouched for a month and then come back to a happy car.
Easy to clear them though with the steering lock to lock. Perhaps a little over dramatic on my part. ;) I just wanted people to know that you can expect these errors when disconnecting the battery. Thanks for watching. Ed
Hello from Miami Beach Florida USA
I purchased an $86k Quadrifoglio at the end of 2023 and as today is been at the dealer from over 30 day with all kinds of problems mentioned here. Not even the dealer knows what’s going on with it. Stay away from Alfa Romeo. Never again. USA lemon law in progress now.
Ps. The car has 3k miles now 😂 what a joke
Seems that you got a bad one from the factory. That’s a pity. Also a shame that they couldn’t identify the problem. It’s probably a simple fix if they ever found it. Ed
There are two relays near the battery in the boot that fail. It’s a known Alfa fault and there’s now new part numbered relays to fix the problem permanently. Same thing happened to mine.
What do the relays power? Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero, when they failed, the car would crank (starter would spin) but the engine would not fire.
End result was car would start, was locked in park and it would cycle all the error codes on the dash. It was fixed by an Alfa dealer under warranty and that’s the story they told me as the cause.
Its easier to get to the relay housing unit if you take off the drivers side front wheel and arch covers
I believe that’s only for the Veloce or maybe left hand drive QV. I’ve seen photos of that location and it doesn’t match mine. On mine it’s directly behind the right hand headlight. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero How did you manage to get to yours? My QV recently has started playing up and doesnt start, although all electrics in it are fine just nothing happens when pressing the ignition button. I suspect its the starter relay thats playing up
It’s the most likely. I’ve done mine twice. Just have to ‘cable tie! The tubes out of the way and only remove the top half of the relay housing. I could never get the lower half to release. Bruised fingers for sure but it’s possible.
Here’s the relay you need (ending in 885, the red one) www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/parts/Giulietta_Relay.shtml
Being proactive sometimes, I decided to buy spare relays. The part number seems to have changed over and over. I found a generic reference to some RockAuto relays. I wound up buying the cheap one for $5.01. Bought three and after postage and tax, I am in at $6.85 each. Upon arrival, the surprise, made in Italy same part number as posted here. Mopar stamped on the relay, yet packaged as WVE 1R3579.
That’s a brilliant find. I knew there had to be another source. Ed
Phew! I felt your relief.
Good effort.
Thanks Kevin. Just a process of elimination. It hasn’t reoccurred since. 😁
I bet it's a common problem with relays, same was in my old Saab. Just need to open it up and solder dry joints. You could save Yourself even those 27 quids :D Thanks for pointing out the cause anyway! cheers uncle ed!
I got a bit frustrated and managed to take the top off then I cut a hole in the box to removed the relay ….and after doing that it still wouldn’t start my scanner saying it’s the alarm module and the rac who was with me for litterly 5 mins just said the same then “sorry I can’t help you “ as soon as he went it started and multiple times it has started so I think my alarm has been upset by being tilted having had rear tyres fitted and having a new battery fitted ,I’ve used car today and it has started it’s just if I don’t give a few mins for each start it goes into lockdown mode and the started won’t even spin ,I’ve also ordered new keyfob battery .
All good things to do. It’s the confidence that is lost though. Mine has gone through a couple of relays and a battery so far. I’ll replace the fob batteries just in case. That’s a great point. Ed
Glad you were able to fix it yourself! Great detective work! Do you usually leave the Auto Stop/Start function on? Or shut it off? I wonder if that "feature" puts extra wear on the starter relay? I think I will shut mine off from now on, just to be on the safe side! Happy New Year from the USA!
I'm sure that the stop start function puts extra strain on both the relay and the battery. I'll be switching it off in the future (when I can remember) I know that some tuning companies can switch the stop/start off as the default. Thanks for commenting. Ed
The first test drive took was in this same color back in 2017...almost pulled the trigger on a pearl white Quad a couple of years ago but the stealership really tried to steal my 07 M5...so I backed outta the deal... I'm still thinking if getting one! Good luck with the QV!!!
A private sale of your car is always the way to go. Puts you in a great buying position. Ed
Hi I have the exact same problem I bought a battery yesterday and it still won’t start although it does after you leave it alone ,but as soon as you turn it off you can just hear the starter clicking so I’m hoping it’s that relay you showed .(you might of saved me a few quid lol 😜).
Hope it helps you. It’s a bit fiddly to get to. Box close to the rear of the rhs headlamp on a QV. In front of the wheel liner on others. It’s the lower relay on the outside. there’s four I think in there. I swapped all 4 from the rear relay box under the trunk floor just to be sure. Here’s an affordable source. Part number is 11130885. Ed
www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/parts/Giulietta_Relay.shtml
@@Back_Road_Herohi I’ve just tried to open it up for the last 2 hours how did you do it ? I’ve pushed the two top snap in clips back and only the top moves slightly the rest doesn’t budge are there any more clips on it …it’s such a stupid place to put them 😢.
I had to hold back some of the pipes around it with cable ties. There’s clips on the side as well I think. Only needed to remove the top half and wiggle them out. It’s so tight and you’ll have cuts. Ed
Great info and kind of you to share this. Got to be fair with Alfa, these Omron relays are used on most cars so it’s just unlucky. 👍
OK OK, despite watching this I've still ordered a Quad!
You won’t regret it (hopefully) 😁
To be fair, my twenty-five year old Alfa would not start and dash was dead. Cranked, yet no ignition. I gazed at the wiring diagram for a bit and narrowed it down to a relay under the dash. Sure enough, that did the trick.
I can’t believe in this age that they don’t use something different. Same old red relays! Ed
I have a 2018 qv around 27k miles and never ever problems with that I'm so happy with my qv
Yes I’m generally happy with it. My problems have only been minor. Now I’ve a great warranty for extra piece of mind. Ed
Incredibly helpful. Video saved.
Much appreciated Andy. Thanks. Ed
You sound like a local man to me , unless you have moved to the main land , any how great video , I found this as I found Alfa that dosnt start at the right money, was thinking swapping my 2007 rs4 for it , bit of a gamble , any thoughts
Thanks R
I’m from Co Down originally but lived away a long time. It’s all about the ‘forgiveness factor’ and this car has it in spades. It will wind its way into your heart in a way that nothing else can touch. Think of it as a four door Ferrari, or an Italian lover. Spend a little time, spend a little money and she will reward you handsomely. 👍🍀💚🇮🇹
I'm still laughing at the autotrader joke.😁
😂😂😂
Thank you very much for this video! My understanding was you had to move to fix the codes with the full lock turns. Wonder if that applies for NA market. Also wonder what brand is OEM. Hopefully it isn't "Made in China". Did you use dielectric grease to minimize corrosion?
From memory they’re an OSRAM relay. I never found an equivalent so I’d be interested to see if you can find one. No grease, but it’s worth considering. Ed
if the car would not start till after switching relays at your "moment of truth" initial start up then how'd you have engine temp.? 2 bars on temp on your gauges indicate it was already running just then previously??
Saw and thought the same thing.
This was an intermittent fault Scott. I had used the car earlier and just like the last time it let me down it it happened all of a sudden. The simple relay swap only took me about 10 mins. I’m not sure exactly what you’re suggesting. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero it came across in the video that the car hadn’t started in a while and this was the first attempt at starting it, not that it was a intermittent fault and you had already used the car that day.
No worries. Perhaps I didn’t make it clear.
@@stephenlongfield8492 He couldn’t simply share his experience without seizing the opportunity to embellish his issue and take repeated unfair stabs at Italians and disparage Italian products. At the end of the day bigots are gonna bigot.
Great video! I think I may have the same problem. As you said, the top cover of the box comes off easily, but how do you remove the bottom one to allow relay replacement?
I wasn’t able to remove it completely. Just enough to get a plastic trim tool far enough in to pry out the lower relay (having removed the upper one first). I still have the scars, but it’s achievable, just. Best of luck. Ed ps sense of achievement is massive.
Hi... Proper impressed with your video and having a go at fixing it... Not sure where you are in the UK.... but if your rear demister isn,t working still its probably a software update issue which needs resolving... battery and alternator automatically adjusts to power demands.... Unless you have access to Alfa,s own computer system you will probably find the fault won,t go away..... or will reappear in another way... If you are looking to get these issues sorted plus your big 30,000 mile service I would recommend Neal at NJS Alfa in Pershore near Worcester... He is a proper "good old boy" and will be able to sort your issues. Regards... Rog
Thanks Roger. I should have explained better in the video but I stole the rear demist relay knowing it was a good one and on an effectively ‘redundant’ system to swap with the defective one for the starter. This was only temporary until I got a replacement from Alfa which took 3 weeks. Then I just popped the new one into the rear demist position easily accessible in the boot. There never was an issue with the demist, I merely used it as a parts bin. I’m located near Bicester, Oxfordshire so I’ll be needing a good specialist in the future. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero Hi Ed...... Blimey Are you and me the only ones watching Evo Car of the Year videos and other stuff instead of in the Pub or watching fireworks??? Ha ha.... I have a 2017 QF and with carbon brakes ( never had an issue with them,.... they are just fantastic )..... however I noticed over the last 12-18 months my rear demister didn,t seem to work... never really bothered me and occasionally I would have similar issues (faults???) as your car including sometimes alarm going off in the middle of the night and info screen going blank.... worse issue I had was every now and again car would go into limp mode after giving it a good thrashing.... took car to three different MAIN Dealers and car came back all nice and clean and valeted and they assured me all was fixed... Lo and behold it would do it again randomly some time later.. sometimes months between issues.... Eventually I happened across NJS Alfa in Pershore just north of Worcester and 1) turned out my battery was pretty much half clapped out so replaced with proper VARTA jobbie... and Hey presto that cured rear screen demist issues and the start/ stop feature started working.... hadn,t ever noticed it wasn,t working from day 1... and 2) Fuel pump on older cars ( 2017 is mine ) have well known issues and that sorted out the intermittent fault with engine going into limp mode.... Major service for 30,000 miles I think you are looking at around £1,100- £1,200 but worth getting someone who knows what they are doing to sort it... I, ve also got Centreline link exhaust pipe on mine and Neal at NJS has done a Stage 1 ecu tune on mine..... approx 616 bhp....... Now it is just completely brilliant..and they can tune exhaust to have valves open whenever you want also.. Only thing I cannot agree with you though is you mention 40mpg..... No chance on mine I, m afraid..33/34 on a run perhaps if I drive with my slippers on. Regards... Rog from Bewdley Worcs
@@rogerpreece7762 Hi Roger and Ed.
My G QF has just passed 3 years, been a trouble free joy, but the start/stop has recently not been activating so often. Dealer says that it points to the battery, so will be changing it under warranty. Apparently a software update that was undertaken during its recent 3 year service, overcame a mode selector excess current demand issue, which was placing unnecessary extra load on the battery, hence why it’s struggling after three years, apparently. Worth checking if you, and Ed have had this update.
I’ve also got the carbon ceramics, and I hope to keep the car for many years, (not like me!) and I’d imagine that they’ll last and last. I think they’re exceptional. Though the standard brakes are too. It’s not my daily, and the miles are low. I’m intending on keeping everything standard, there’s no reason not to, but I am interested in your tune. (I had a ‘mild tune’ to 585, and 700nm, and I think it delivers a little late in the revs. Had the valves set to open in dynamic too.)
616?! Very tempting. What torque figure? How linear is it? Did you have the gearbox mapped too? The ZF reals in the power substantially in 1st and 2nd for the sake of traction, not releasing full power until 3rd gear. As I’ve got F1’s on, I believe more could be untapped, as they manage far better than the Corsa’s did.
I’d be more than interested on your take on the tune you had done Roger, if you don’t mind?
I may have to pay NJS a visit.
@@steriledial Hiya.... How you doing?... Just read your note....if your Stop/ Start packing up its usually caused by battery getting a bit long in the tooth.... Neal at NJS recommended VARTA battery when mine went... he checked cranking amperage and it was about 380 amps I think instead of 660 it was supposed to be putting out... think it was about £180odd but he didn't recommend using lithium / lightweight alternative.... but since changing battery my Stop/ Start works fine in "A" mode and oddly enough the rear demister now seems to be working. I might not have noticed that wasn't working as weather wasn't that bad. So might be a coincidence.
But hope it might be of use to you.... I had all sorts of problems using Main Dealers.... mostly enthusiastic enough people but don't really know or understand the brand. So that's why I went for an Independent chap.
I have no allegiance to NJS but when I take my car in for service/ repair/ whatever they let me have a crappy little Fiat Panda or something as a runaround....
But I trust the bloke as he showed me on my undertray last time my car went to Main Dealers they had bodged a load of screws and cable ties to hold rear diffuser on instead of doing the job properly.
He did gearbox tune same time as ecu remap and depending on where you turn the little knob you can go from easy peasy daily driver to complete and utter beast.....!!!
I,ve changed MID section exhaust on mine aswell ( Centreline replacement ) and now sounds just a bit more purposeful without spending £3-£4k on a complete system.
Anyway.... hope that helps.
Regards. Rog
@@rogerpreece7762 Thank you Roger.
All very helpful. Some good info there for me to get on with.
Battery wise, I’m guessing I’ll get given the type Alfa supply, as I’ve still 2 years on my 5 year warranty.
I’ll pay NJS a visit some time. I think the gearbox tune tweak is probably as interesting as the engine mapping.
Much appreciated and enjoy your ‘beauty & beast’ 🍻
Hi Ed, it's the Eggmeister here again. I'm having the dashboard 'Christmas tree lights' every time i start my Giulia now and the steering wheel reset doesn't work with it anymore. I suspect the battery as i think it's still the original one. I've cleaned up the terminal posts and quick release neg. pole with some steel wool to no avail. AutoDoc have a Bosch equivalent battery for 150 quid but I know you said you went for a gel battery. Would you mind telling me how much and where from please?
Greatly appreciated,

My alpha quad seems to be losing its charge, had a new battery installed and now it’s dead , I think it could be the same problem here 🤦🏻♂️
Mine is usually ok but make sure you put your keys away in a faraday pouch including the spare so the car doesn’t stay awake if you’ve got keyless entry. I found that on mine. Otherwise it could just be a relay stuck closed. If it turns an on but won’t crank then yes it could be the start relay.

I’ve believe it’s an OMRON. Probably easily available. Just didn’t want to risk it.

Yes, but on Giulia, they are fail more frequently, especially in engine department space. I had 4 years old Giulia and one of six ones relays close to front fender failed. 911 IMS bearing failure
UBER QUALITY MY ASS !!!!
All cars have issues. I know I’ve had my fair share of them as well. It’s hard to come up with a piece for what is essentially just a relay. Maybe ‘over egged’ it a little. 😜👍 Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero..... I hear you Chief, I just find it a bit silly that when it happens to German cars they're "over engineered" and when it happens to Italian cars they're "unreliable"....PEACE OUT DAWG and
FORZA ALFA BABY !!!!
THE KING IS BACK !!!!
Buy more relays. Trust me.
I’ve got a couple to spare. 😜 Ed
WHAT!?
???
That sounds like a battery issue, limey. Go buy a British 4 door sedan. Oh wait... they only make out of reach Bentleys ...
I did mention in the video that the battery was the first thing we changed previously.
Well; a not so happy new year to you.
All sorted now Phil so I’ll keep it for another while. Sooo frustrating. Hope you have a great 2022? Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero It's good that you are doing a warts and all plus fixes. Not seen this on any other channels. Let's hope we 'all' have a good 2022.
Sell your Giulia QV! You don’t deserve a car like that! I remind you that despite everything, Italy produces the most beautiful and most powerful cars in the world and that Alfa Romeo is ‘the mother’ of Ferrari. All modern cars have sophisticated electronic management of engine and accessories and certain problems also occur in cars of other brands, even important ones!
You don’t deserve an Alfa!
Why would you say such a hurtful thing? I love my Alfa. It’s easy to say things when you’re not in front of me.
Mai scollegare la batteria! Non sei degno di possedere un alfa
It’s common practice to disconnect the battery before working on electrics. What do you mean I’m ‘not worthy’ of owning an Alfa. Don’t be discourteous.
Was seriously thinking of buying one these, but …… £27 ridiculous! You should’ve have got a lot more 👍. Well done . 👌🫡
