  • I made this coffee table that has a removable top for my wife so she has a place to do puzzles and board games. This game table was a fun woodworking project to make. The entire project is made out of poplar wood that is inexpensive, easy to work with and accepts stain well. I used an easy to apply gel stain followed by a polyurethane topcoat and I think it turned out great. I hope you enjoy the video and consider subscribing to the channel to see more!

Thanks! This was furniture of necessity. Last month we ate at the couch for a week while my wife took over the dining room table putting together a puzzle. It has been a fun ride with a cool group of makers coming up at the same time. You guys are inspiring!

I really enjoyed the video and learned a few new things, as usual. I didn't realize that stain worked better with 150 grit sandpaper. Good information.

Thanks! I'm not the greatest finisher so when i find a recipe that works, I cant deviate from it. LOL

That's awesome! I feel a lot more comfortable with trying out some joints that I have been putting off now.

Very nice project~! I really like the straight-forward delivery of your videos. I didn't realize the point about sanding up to 150 when staining, but it does make perfect sense. Thanks for that~!

Beautiful table 👍, the brace was a good idea, especially if you start pushing the table around on a carpet with weight on it, sooner or later the leg assembly would have started to crack, beside damage prevention i think it makes the table even look better.

Nice build! I have a couple questions for you about the table. First, what were the dimensions of the puzzle tray? Secondly, how come you didn’t use hinges? It looks the that top is fairly big and might be difficult to take off and put on by oneself.

    • @TwistedWorkshop77

Thanks for checking it out. The entire time I was building this I couldn't think of what to call the plywood that the puzzle would sit on. Puzzle tray!! The tray is 22x46. This covers most 1000 piece puzzles and board games but you would have to make it larger for 2k and up puzzles. My original design had the top being 2 pieces and they would be hinged but my wife wanted t simply take the top so she could sit on the floor and not have the top in the way. The height of the table is 18 inches so the top would hang down 12 inches blocking her legs from getting under the table. The outside dimensions and the top is 24x48 so it's pretty easy to lift with a 24 inch arm spread.

Thank you. I ask because I am wanting to make something similar but I don’t want to have to remove everything off the table top so I need to cantilever the top out of the way. And maybe the inside puzzle tray towards the couch.

Great video. I did something similar. But with mine I encapsulated the puzzle with epoxy into the coffee table. Check it out. Called it the “puzzle table”. Thanks
