This video helped me a lot, actually. It seems that his spells are not meant to be used as combo tools as I was trying to do, and more as ways to control space. The exception for that seems to be Screaming Metron 808, which so far is a swiss army knife in terms of how versatile it is.
Spells give you wallbreak from 5K (probably 5P too) midscreen, you even have time to cancel into bookmark, test case change or mana recovery (it even seems to give you better frame advantage on some spells). You just have to get the feel for the juggles and launch from different spells. If you can, go into c.S 2H microdash c.S 2H, so far it's been a pretty consistent and strong route for me.

You can 100% use spells in combos. All his metrons (orange cards) give you good corner carry. You just have to draw/bookmark a card after you use it
