The film used several techniques to capture the feel of its high school setting for nostalgic fans. It was filmed largely at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles during the spring of 1981 with the students as extras. The storyline rarely leaves the high school. The students talk mostly about social life and college plans, while the prom is in the gym. The senior trip is to the local amusement park. Of the major stars, however, only Felice Schachter was still a high school student when the film was shot. In fact, she missed her own prom to shoot the prom sequence in the film.
The film used a body-double for Thomas' nude scenes, as she refused to remove her own clothes; further controversy was generated when a complaint was filed by Thomas about a likeness of her head being pasted onto someone else's nude body.

Great video! I've loved Zapped! since it used to air on cable back in the early 80s. So many great movies from that time back when people weren't so uptight about everything. Thanks for another look behind the curtain at an 80s gem.

Awesome! In 1980 we had "How to beat the high cost of living" filmed here in Eugene at Valley River Center Mall.. and like you mention I am also thankful they filmed it here because there's not much video from back then. That's the way I remember it when I grew up and it's fantastic to see.

I love your memories Kurt. We're the same age and I grew up in the Valley at the same time you did so a lot of what you remember overlaps with my own memories. I could have sworn there was also a Miller's Outpost at one point in the Encino shopping center with The Wherehouse and L.A. Tronics (both of which I remember well), but maybe I'm mistaken.

Fun fact. I worked for a video game company back in the mid 20's called Tsunami Visual Technologies. They're gone now. My boss who the ops manager was a jerk but sometimes cool named Jim Upton (Willie's original last name). He always look so familiar to me. One day I walked by a co-worker and she was talking to someone saying she saw Jim's brother on VH-1 the previous night. I asked who his brother was, she said "Willie Ammes". I freaked out. I ran straight into his office and ask if it was really his brother. He said yes. Told me all the crazy party cocaine, sleeping with groupie stories and photo's. Couldn't believe it. One day he calls me into his office and asked I want to talk to Willie. I said I was big fan, always thought he was funny AF. He said thanks and that he regrets some of that stuff but found god and now travels in an RV as a superhero called "Bibleman" lol.

There must have been some kind of template for the architecture of high schools built in the 20s and 30s because John Marshall looks almost exactly like the high school I went to in Canada. My old HS isn't open anymore, and the city is repurposing it into luxury condominiums. So it goes. Also, I love what you do, Kurt. Keep it up. Much love.

I love your videos. Few reasons: you get to the point. You don’t ponder around and stumble over your words like some other RUclipsrs. I love 80s stuff too. I’m 47 and grew up in the 80s. I also like how you set your phone down and stand there and explain things. I love how you give us details and step by step about certain parts of the movie. It’s the little stuff that people notice.

In 1981 we did not have a box but tuned 12 basic cable channels with the TV tuner. HBO was channel 3, coming with basic (most primative) cable TV. I do believe the first time I saw the unedited version of Zapped was on HBO sometime in the mid 1980s. It is worth 2 hours or however long it is to watch.
