    The title is a lie. Mr Ferrari did not want to submit 5 cars to the NTSB for crash testing and destruction. He considered them works of art, especially being hand-made.

    • @lebojay
      @lebojay 3 месяца назад +1

      It is a stupid claim. Why would he not want them in the US? And if he didn’t want them in the US, then why did they bend over backwards to make sure its successor, the Testarossa, would be allowed in the US?
      Truth: they wanted the BB in the US but couldn’t figure out how to comply with US law while still turning a profit.

    • @jamesbambury
      @jamesbambury 3 месяца назад +1

      Why does that make the title in accurate? What ever the reason (assuming what you said is correct) there was a process he had to go through to bring the cars here and elected not to do it, that is why he did not want them here. The underlying reason is just context.

    Dash of the 328 at 1:40. Engine does not need to come out the bottom of the car. If the clutch is heavy it is set up incorrectly or needs to be replaced.

    Berlinetta bialbero. This is what BB stood for originally. They didn't want it to be comfused with the prior 365 GTB4 "aka Daytona" Which was a V12, produced at the same time. The 365 GT4 original name was too similar, and the 5 liter name was then used 1976 to mirror the sports prototype car names 512S and then 512M, that had been competing in the early 70s. Someone in the press called it boxer early on, 71 72. Either during release or the unveiling in Torino. Even though it is incorrect for the engine. This is a 180 degree flat 12. Then the berlinetta boxer name stuck and the factory made the boxer name official. This is the common argument since it says boxer on the owner's manual, which it became. However, it was originally bialbero for the dual overhead cams per bank, making 4 total. Bi meaning two and albero meaning tree or branch, in Italian which is how they refer to a camshaft. Much like Quattrovalvole in the later 308 and Cinquevalvole in the 355. This was told to me by a gentleman at the Ferrari museum. It's true Enzo was reluctant to go to the flat 12 setup in the prototype sports cars, but it proved to be successful with the lower center of gravity, weight, stability and torque output. With Porsche (917) and others already going in that direction. Apparently the Bardot thing was also a media originated thing going around at the same time, but no one knows for sure. It doesn't feasibly make sense for BB to begin existence as Brigitte's name. It does make sense for the BB to be there, then someone joking says her name...as this was described to me. And as for the US market thing, apparently the car wasn't ready for US emissions and safety. It would be too expensive to crash test the car with the new regulations. Also, the front and rear structure could not accommodate a 5 mile bumper. Again this was all told to me at the Ferrari museum. My mediocre research hit a dead end, with everything being hearsay and rumor. I believe this answer and it makes the most sense on all points. It's uncertain whether Enzo didn't want the car in the US, but it would have sold.

    Nonsense on the 328 belt service. I've owned one for a long time, and done several belt services. $1,500-2,000 is typical if you have a shop do it. The cost only goes up if you have to do a bunch more stuff, which is normally not necessary.

    I had two. They were good cars, but to me as a racing driver they fell short of great. The gear lever was too close too your leg and the engine was too high on top of the transaxle. Great engine with carbs. It's actually a V-12, not a genuine boxer. Ask an engineer.

    It seems like 12 cylinder Ferrari fans fall into two camps with the 512 BB and the Testarossa. I've heard 512 fans say that even though the Testarossa has more power and is faster in a straight line its handling is inferior to the 512. I've never driven either so I don't know from personal experience but I am curious to know if it's true.

    • @lebojay
      @lebojay 3 месяца назад

      It is completely moot. Both cars are sh!tty by modern standards, and nobody drives them at the limit anyway.
      I’m a Testarossa owner, and couldn’t care less about handling. That’s not why I bought it. If I cared about handling, I’d have bought a Cayman. And in any case, these cars are GTs, intended to be driven on the open road, not tossed around corners. Anyone who drives them that way is either very rich, very skilled, or very stupid.

    Why make stuff up? There is no evidence to support your claim that Enzo thought the Boxer was too much for Americans. And you took a few liberties with the Brigette Bardot story, too.
    Complying with US law was too expensive for them at the time. That’s the simple reason this car wasn’t sold in America.
    There’s so much you could say about this car. I don’t know why you assumed your viewers were ignorant enough that you could just make stuff up and nobody would notice.

    That Enzo story doesnt make any sense. He sold us Americans many fast V12 cars. Mid engine handling is usually much more balanced and benign too. It was American emissions and safety regulations that forbade it. Please get your facts straight and stop listening to urban legend gossip. If Americans could handle a 500 hp Hemi Cuda, they could handle a Boxer.

    • @SeanOHanlon
      @SeanOHanlon 3 месяца назад

      He's right. It's not that Enzo didn't believe that Americans couldn't handle a 12 cylinder engine. He didn't think anyone could handle a 5 liter mid-engine car off the track.
      Compliance with emissions regulations was the real reason why the BB512 weren't sold in America until the engines were changed to fuel injection.

      @@SeanOHanlon Enzo was a racer himself. Mid engine handling is safer. I had a Pantera as a young idiot in college. The benign handling saved my life. The Boxer was a little more freaky at the limit, yes, but not as bad as a front engine muscle car with big power.
