I used to memorize the books my parents would read to me, so when we did show and tell of our favorite books, I could say it out loud instead of struggling with each word. I’m glad my 3rd grade teacher caught on early and helped me learn to read. Ended up reading at a high school and college level by 6th & 7th grade because of her.

That's exactly what my granddaughter does, she memorises it and hopes we don't notice.

I'm a senior in high school and I seriously think I'm dyslexic... I get anxiety about reading in front of anyone because personally I have to read what ever is given 2-3 times before comprehending it. And I can never go at a similar pace to my class mate while working on study sheets that go over our current chapter. (At the moment I am in mythology so it is even more difficult when uncommon phrases and such are thrown in)

My daughter is 8 years old, always been done homeschool, when we do the testing she gets the questions right, but we did the test verbally. However, while teaching her ABC's she knew them in order but can only identify a few of them. We have written the site words down over and over and over again, then right after she can't tell me what she just spelled. She can't remember the sounds the letters make. She can repeat the words in our readers (but I believe she is trying to remember what those words look like to recall and she always looks at the picture. So if the letter is v but its a picture of a snake she says the v is an s.
She gets frustrated and wants to give up. She was a late talking and had speech problems as well.We have been working on that. She can tell me what the vowels are but can't show me the vowel in the word given her. I did ask the Dr. once that I was worried that she was having speech problems, and he suggested that we wait, and maybe she was just a late learner. She makes excuses, saying she has a headache when I say "Ok, its time to work on your writing." She can copy what I write but her writing is not no where near what it needs to look like. She doesn't put spaces between words even though I have tried all the mommy hacks to show her how to spread them out. I saw other comments on kids not being able to tie their shoes, and she has been shown many times, but still can't do it on her own. Now that there has been the pandemic, I started doing some research on here and google to find out if its dyslexia or dysgraphia. Please tell me where to go from here if you can. She is super smart but struggles with the fundamentals that must be needed for literacy and writing. She has so many strong points, but I need all the help I can get. We have been using the parent led Abeka curriculum. Like I said, I show her a pic and ask her what the name of the pic is and give her the choices and she can get it right. She scored high on her CAT test, answered all the questions correctly I asked, but she is struggling. I just want to know how to best help her get through this. Thank you in advance. Any suggestions for my 8 year old and her mama is appreciated.

I know this is an older comment but I'm hoping you might still respond. I'm a step mom and don't have friends with children. Would you be willing to discuss a few things you mentioned here? This was like reading my life for the past 2 years.
The tying shoes thing, the memorizing and using pictures to guess vs comprehend. Being able to speak very articulately, sometimes using words beyond any primary school reading level but consistently forgetting how to read the word "and". I picked up that he memorizes the longer words because they look hard and because he doesn't comprehend he forgets to memorize the small ones. This made his dad really confused. How can he read the word "beginning" but not "and". Then it clicked for me and I studied him during his reading and ELA zoom meetings and started to research.
I noticed this with play time as well and thought I might be going too far but I am looking to read/hear other experiences so I know what to look for.
Thank you in advance if there is any input you might have or ideas on what else to watch out for from experience.
I wish you all the best with your daughter.

Interesting. It sounds like there are quite a few signs of dyslexia that are common with dysgraphia/ disorder of written expression.

How did I not get tested for dyslexia until my sophomore year of highschool? I literally had every sign as a child. I couldn’t tie my shoes until age 12.

Woman, you have been stalking me my whole life? Because you described me at all my life stages and it’s getting creepy haha 😛
“When kids enter school they are expected to know their alphabet and numbers up to 20”,
I needed speech therapy when I started school… couldn’t say a full sentence. Forget all that craziness.
I’m dyslexic, dyspraxic and have dyscalculia - aka school isn’t for me.
    Bye bye I’m gone 😆
