  • You can find more information on dyslexia symptoms at www.dyslexiaconnect.com .
    There are many symptoms of dyslexia, such as poor reading accuracy, skipping words, difficulty with letters and letter combinations, flipping b, d, p and q, and many more. I discuss many of the most common signs and symptoms of dyslexia in this video.
    It is important to remember that not every dyslexic displays the same symptoms of dyslexia. Some dyslexics may display two or three symptoms of dyslexia, while a different dyslexic may display ten different symptoms.
    Since there are so many signs and symptoms of dyslexia, we must not assume that an individual is not dyslexic, simply because they do not display one specific symptom.
    Once you learn what the symptoms of dyslexia are, dyslexia becomes much easier to identify.

    My daughter has all the signs she was diagnosed with dyslexia 2 weeks ago after a very long diagnostic period. She only rarely spells entire words backwards or parts of sentences. Like she was trying to write you but she put ouy. It will take her a really long time to copy a really easy sentence and the words will be written wrong. She has a lot of accomodations now thankfully and a dyslexia teacher. She also is a great artist she has a brilliant mind and imagination.

    I have following symptoms
    1) reading accuracy
    2) change or add words while reading out loud
    2) ignoring punctuation
    3) reading is tiring
    4) have problem telling left from wright (if I do not focus)
    5) leave out letters a lot while writing (most in my mother language less so in English)
    6) have hard time telling the time on clock
    7) mistakes d and b while handwriting
    8) get lost in large paragraphs and do not remember where I was (while reading)
    9) constantly have to read several times to get the text
    8) randomly forget how to spell words like "beautiful"
    "Because" ...
    9) Make stupid mistakes in math like 5+3=7 if I do not check.
    1) I'm good really good at logical problems, geometry, stereometry
    2) I have really good listening skills, I think I got this from studying biology and chemistry without reading at home just from listening to the teacher
    3) I'm passionate about art, thinking of going to art school
    4) I didn't struggle learning English (started at age 7) but I am now struggling to learn German (started at age 15)
    I'm 17, I'm in 12th grade.
    I can't find any dyslexia tests in my country. I want to continue studying in USA. I took SAT and got 540 at verbal (only managed to finish 2 texts out of 5 in reading) and 700 at math (I love geometry and stereometry)

    I don't know if I'm dyslexic. I'm in 8th grade and i have had straight A's all my life, I'm great at math, science, and logical thinking, but i can't spell to save my life, my grammar is non-existent, and reading has become nearly impossible, it takes my 2-3 times longer to read one page compared to my friends (thank god for audible). I have never had to jumbling of letters, but when i read a number/time such as 3:47 ill end up saying 7:43 sometimes.I love learning and gaining knowledge, but reading is form of tourture for me. Idk why this is and I'm sick and tired of giving my best and having my parents yell at me for not practicing enough. Can someone help

      +Aiden Lex Hi, Aiden. Thanks for your comment. The difficulties that you describe are very common symptoms of dyslexia. Many students with dyslexia are brilliant, and are gifted in many different areas, but still have trouble with reading and spelling. This is simply due to the nature of dyslexia. If you are interested in tutoring, our online tutoring program could definitely help your make progress. You can find info on our webpage: www.dyslexiaconnect.com/ . Or, you could also check with your local IDA branch to see if there are other resources in your area. eida.org/ida-branches/ . I hope that helps!

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  8 лет назад

      +Aiden Lex Yes, we have many homeschooled students in our online tutoring program, in fact. There are a couple of different routes you can go to check for dyslexia. An informal evaluation is usually performed by a tutor, and can let you know whether you are dyslexic. We offer these as part of our free trial. If you need an official evaluation or diagnosis of dyslexia, these are usually done by doctors or psychiatrists. You can find more info in our video here: ruclips.net/video/D9vVwaZlnAg/видео.html . If you would like to set up a free trial with us, just contact us through one of the contact forms on our website, and we can set that up.

    Oh my word!
    I have a very intelligent child. She is smart, spoke 2 languages by age 2. She plays chess, and loves maths.
    She is in Gr1 this year and the first term has been a nightmare.
    She's been begging to read since she was 3. But suddenly she refuses to do it.
    She keeps inverting letters and numbers. Cannot remember a word from one page to the next and has the weirdest thing where she can spell a word out loud (after lots and lots of practice), but when she has to write it down, it just isn't right. The letters are there, but most often so jumbled up that it's not even a word.
    She also gets majorly confused with the sounds of the A,E,I,O,U. She will confuse them in words all the time.
    We got her first term rapport yesterday. She had full marks on her Maths, even with the number inversions, she still got all the sums correct.
    But her reading was graded at only a 6. Which is only a little above passing. And she got a fail grade for the spelling and Grammer parts.
    This is the same kid who watches RUclips video's on bridge building and other scientific things. The same kid that learns at a rapid speed.
    I came here, expecting to not find an answer, just trying out different things to find out how I can help her.
    And this video is almost to a T correct.
    I am so excited! Sounds weird, but, now we can get her seen by someone who can 100% make sure and then we can truly help her!

    Has anyone else experienced an inability to enjoy new music the first time they hear it? An audio book I listened to implied dyslexics might not have an ability most people do which allows most people to enjoy music they had never heard before. I got this from a book called "This is your brain on music." In one part they explained how the brain can derive pleasure form music it has never heard before. Its has something to do with a timing center of the brain that anticipates and enjoys the completion of patterns in rhythm and melody. In another section, it mentions in passing that dyslexia is (or can be) a defect in this timing center. All my life I had this issue and never realized it. The first time I listen to a new CD, my experience is rather bland and my memory of the experience is almost always "Mehhhh..." On the second or third listen, suddenly its pleasant to me. Years back, I bought a CD by a favorite artist and listened to it. I didn't enjoy it AT ALL and even offered to give it to a friend. Then, on the day I was to give it to the friend, I played it one more time and I enjoyed EVERY song. There was not one song that I didn't really like. It was a favorite artist after all so I should have known better than to give it away so quickly. But I have had little experiences like that all my life.

    Thank you for your video, DIagnosed with Dyslexia at a young age. While you described the symptoms I just remembered the struggle with my teachers and laugh. Learning to read by my self has improved my writing abilities among others, however, in many cases I have the issue that I change the character's name and when another person reads the book they get really confused about which character I am speaking of. Funnily enough, I tend to read and write in English more than Spanish (native tongh) as I find it easier.

    I'm 37 and have a Master's degree in Social Work. I have struggled all my college years with writing tasks. In my first job out of grad school I struggled with writing tasks (takes me longer to complete). I got written up a few times and continued struggling for a few years and eventually got fired from my job. The symptoms felt like ADHD so I requested an assessment and the psychologist said I don't have ADHD but I do have difficulty with reading comprehension and this impacts my writing abilities. So here I am, learning that I have symptoms consistent with (mild) dyslexia. Feels validating and reignites my motivation to continue searching for a career/job that's a good fit for the way my brain operates.

    I do the first one but with numbers mostly. If a number is 756, i tend to write it 657. I didn't know that was a rare form. I was formally diagnosed in my last year of college and it made a huge difference. Simply giving me more time on tests in a smaller testing environment let me go from a C average student to straight A's. I also started reading out loud (by myself) and recording myself. I'd play it back for better comprehension.

    I have the reading accuracy symptom when reading out loud. Only thing that I don’t do is ignore punctuation. But, I definitely jumble words around and it always annoyed the heck out of me. Recently rediscovered this trait while reading books to my kids. Strange how this happens. I read for fun. Read novels and such and in my head it flows as it should, yet when I read out loud, i sound somewhat illiterate at times. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    I am dyslexic but, I also have audio dyslexia. I never hear anyone speak about this form of dyslexia.so you might say I really think your dog is cute. My answer would be I don’t have a hog. Many times I hear a different letter then what the speaker is saying. I also say words backwards. It was suggested that I read out loud and hear if I’m reading correctly. This is now a habit and it has helped. It might be a little disturbing in a waiting room but I’m very quite it. Try it.

    I have never been tested in school but now as a uni student looking back at my work I can see patterns in my work. When reading out loud I always make mistakes and stumble by switching words about or missing them out. I don’t like reading because it exhausts me and my mum who is also dyslexic thought I just didn’t want to read books but I love learning and my mum reading to me as a kid.
    This helped me understand that maybe I do have dyslexia. I just find it so hard to concentrate as well but not sure if that is part of it. I struggled with times tables and maths but not all maths.

    hey, this probably isnt important but when I was little I used to always forget to say 4 and 6 when I used to have to count does this mean anything? also I when was little I also read word in a book correctly, and then next I cant even pronounce it but thank you for this video I'm good with spelling but my pronunciation of words is pretty tricky for me still. I also forget words in my reading/ speeches out loud in class I feel kinda embarrassed about it, I do have some of the symptoms you were talking about like the spelling reading, etc etc. I do also read sentences over and OVER until I finally find out I was just reading it over and over and over and I couldn't get to the next page also, I make up words sometimes just to replace the things I dont know and accidentally say the word before even getting to the point of reading it, but I would love for you to awnser I know this is a REALLY old video tbut thanks if u do:)

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  5 лет назад +6

      Thanks for your question! You would need to meet with a doctor or psychologist who specializes in dyslexia to receive an actual diagnosis. However, regarding your question, there are individuals who do well on spelling and vocab tests through memory, but still have dyslexia. Individuals with dyslexia sometimes rely on memory for spelling, as a coping mechanism for having difficulty reading and sounding out words.

    Hi Peter. I have a couple of questions. Next week we have an appointment for my partner who has never been diagnosed but I strongly suspect has dyslexia, which is why I pushed him to see a professional. These are some of the syptoms I've noticed: confusing times, if I tell him to ready at 5:20 he will confuse this with 20 minutes to 5:00 (4:40). He mixes syllables in words, the word "panoramic" he would say paronamic. He doesn't do it all the time but enough for me to notice, usually does it with 3 sylable words. Another one is, reading comprehension. Apart from the fact that he has to read something 3 or 4 times to start to understand, if you ask him what was the article about he may give you the main topic but would not be able to answer more in depth questions on it or finds it very hard to organize his thoughts to explain the concept. He also has trouble with connecting cause and effect. In math he isnt terrible but has trouble with reasoning exercises which I suspect stems from the reading comprehension problem. What are your thoughts?

    • @DyslexiaConnect

      Hi, Grisel. Thanks for your question. These issues could definitely be related to dyslexia. Hopefully, the appointment provided some further clarity on this.

    This is interesting because things didn’t become apparent to me until adulthood.
    😌I will write a sentence and skip words because I thought I wrote it in my head , yet it wasn’t written on paper. Missing words , reading out loud shipping words , making up words , also when reading out loud I prefer to have a pen to guide my place 😂because I lose my place.

    Hi, thank you very much for your video.
    I have a question regarding the part where you mention about a dyslexic's phonic ability. You say they have a hard time putting a sound to a letter. Is it the sound they have trouble with ? Or just assigning it to a letter ? In my experience of the dyslexics I've met, he can speak well (can produce the sounds of my language, his words sound as they should), so I'm not sure if he's an exception in that, or if that's not what you meant.
    Thank you.

    • @DyslexiaConnect

      You're welcome! Thanks for your question. Typically, this difficulty is in the area of reading or spelling for a student who has dyslexia. For example, they may attempt to read the word "boat", but not know what sound "oa" makes.

    I have a really time reading phone numbers in my head and out loud, I always seems to mix up the numbers even when I told myself a thousand times what the phone number was I will write it wrong.
    When I read I will forget what I just read and the page starts to look like it’s blending together.
    I also have a very hard time with my rights and lefts. I have to think very hard about it and sometimes use my hands to remember.
    In speech I forget words a lot.
    I love to write but most of the time my sentences end up jumbled and I have to rewrite the sentences all the time.

    I'm 15 not diagnosis with dyslexia. Some reason when writing I forget how to write some simple spellings like"rip" or "it". Thinking about how to spell words then still mispelling When reading silently keep on missing letters or words. Some reason flipping letters was reading or writing. Mispell/flip letters of words even though I was coping it down. Sometimes mix right and left. Sucks at instructions...

    Hi I know I’m so late. but is it commen to know how to read but it is just very difficult and can’t find any modivation to do it like when your in the middle of school and doing a test I can’t like get myself to read it and I also read a paragraph but not know what it was even about like you read the words but it doesn’t comprehend in your mind. So I have to read it like two more times to make it understand Also when I’m writing to fast I mix up letters like: M=W=N and P=F but I know the difference I just do it without thinking. I know you mentioned this in the video but I got really embarrassed in class when my teacher told me to read and I kept studdering and saying the wrong words and in the paragraph it said “ men and women ” but instead I said women and men so backwards . I’m also really bad at getting a point across without stumbling on my words when I’m haveing a conversation and really bad at pronounceimg my r’s . When I’m doing math my sister helps me with my equations and we flipped to the next page to do more and I totally forgot how to do it even tho they were very similar questions. Do you think I have deslexia? I’m 14. But my parents just think it’s an attention problem if you think I do how should I approach them about it?

    I had a hard time learning to read and do math, I read very very slow, can't say the months of the years backwards, can't remember times table odd numbers, I go to write the first letter of a word and instead my hand writes the second letter I then have to go back and add the first letter. I kill the pronunciations of a lot of words my dad would tell me growing up I was the biggest killer of the English language , don't remember names but don't forget a face, can't remember one word of a song, can't spell to save my life, I hate following written directions, I get motion sickness easy, don't tell me any numbers verbally to remember like a phone number unless you go super slow. And something really strange if I have to write the word me in a sentence I always leave it out and have to go back and add it every time. My mother did not want ME to go to college she thought I would not be able to do it, I went to college got a 3.4 grade point average and ran three business. One thing I realized is when I'm more stressed it gets worse to the point now in my older age my hand won't write the numbers I want it to it will write a different number I'm not even thinking of, don't know if that is dyslexia.

    I'm not sure if you'll actually reply to this comment, but what's the difference between dyslexia, a visual processing disorder, and an auditory processing disorder? They all seem to show very similar symptoms.

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  7 лет назад

      That is an excellent question. This article specifically addresses that issue. www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/child-learning-disabilities/dyslexia/the-difference-between-dyslexia-and-auditory-processing-disorder

    • @NSEasternShoreChemist
      @NSEasternShoreChemist 7 лет назад

      You missed the visual processing disorder haha. This is getting confusing; from the reading I've done, it seems as if an auditory processing disorder is dyslexia minus the reading comprehension problems, and a visual processing disorder is dyslexia minus the phonemic awareness problems. But throw another type of dyslexia into the mix -- stealth dyslexia -- where people are able to read with good comprehension, albeit inaccurately... sounds like auditory processing disorder to me -- and things get excessively confusing. I vote you make a video explaining the difference between these issues. (I wish I could do linebreaks, but RUclips won't let me!)

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  7 лет назад

      That article is actually from Understood, a great organization with a variety of articles on dyslexia and other learning issues. They have articles on visual processing issues, as well. I have included the link below. Yes, there are a lot of similiarities in the symtpoms of these issues, which makes defining the differences between them a bit complex. www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/child-learning-disabilities/visual-processing-issues/visual-processing-issues-what-youre-seeing

    • @NSEasternShoreChemist
      @NSEasternShoreChemist 7 лет назад

      You didn't entirely answer my question. I've read the two Understood articles. And I understand them (clever pun, eh?). What I'm getting is that dyslexia is a combination of a visual and an auditory processing disorder.

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  7 лет назад

      It's possible that some experts classify it as that, but typically, I have heard those specific terms used to specify issues that share similarities to dyslexia, but are not dyslexia itself.

I Have never had problems reading letters or numbers in my head (I can only think of a few instances I've read novel words or names wrong), and i can read words out loud just fine. +Morgan BeVard Thanks for your question, Morgan. Often, if a dyslexic individual made a mistake while reading something the first time, they will also make the mistake reading material the second time. This is one of the reasons why we have our students read out loud to us at all times, because we can get them in the habit of seeing mistakes and correcting them as the read. Eventually, they start to catch more of their own mistakes.

    I always had trouble reading and spelling. I also do poorly on my vocab test. I always get 100 on quizlet, but on the test I always get D because I have to choose the vocabulary word that fits into the sentence. My Grammer is very bad, and my vocabulary level is low for a 16 year old. When reading for social studies most of the time I don't get it so I would read it over and over and get little comprehension (there is some vocab that is used in the textbook that I don't know what it mean which makes it harder to read). During class I'm very quite because I try to pay attention to the lecture, but I don't pick up a lot from them. I hate when teacher pick on me to answer a question because I feel like I will say sometime stupid. I hate reading out loud because I stutter a lot and sometime have trouble pronouncing words. I actually failed my midterm and finals for language arts and social studies. I'm afraid to get it checked out because I'm afraid that I'm just stupid and not dyslexic

    Hi! I have troubles with reading a lot. I keep reading words the wrong way or skipping them. Reading is my worst nightmare because I have troubles focusing on what I just read. I also have troubles copying something from the blackboard esspecially numbers. I confuse left and right all the time as well. But I am quite good at learning foreign languages so that's why people often tell me that I can't have dyslexia. So what do you think? Do I may be dyslexic? Thanks!

    Hello, I'm not sure if I'm dyslexic but I am terrible at spelling like a lot worse than all the people in my class, I read extremely slowly it would take me about 10 minutes just to read an average page, the words on pages sometimes move whilst I read. Also I have the forgetting the words thing and I sometimes just forget how to spell words that a 4 year old could spell. Could it be that I'm dyslexic please answer.

Do you know if there are any resources for dyslexia in your school? A teacher who is trained in doing evaluations, for example?

    I am 14 years old and in 8th grade .I don't know if I have dyslexia or not cause I have an IQ level of 136 or so but I have a little problem in reading , my handwriting is horrible, I can't mug up things ,I have alot of spelling errors, I can only learn a thing if it relates to something and i get distracted very easily and don't get good grades because of this . I have a doubt about my dyslexia since I was in 3rd grade . And because of my these mistakes I had to repeat my 3rd grade. So do I have dyslexia ?? Thanks for the information

    I am an elementary school teacher. I have seen and help diagnose severe cases of dyslexia. I found this video hoping to find out more about more common less severe cases. However, I have to say all of the signs you’ve listed here are common for about half my readers. I thought dyslexia was rare, but if I use this list then 50% of the students in my classroom are dyslexic. Am I missing something? Is there more information I need? I don’t feel comfortable telling the school psychologist that half my class needs to be tested for dyslexia. Nor would they ever do that. Some advice or clarification please. 🙏🏼
