The Fight Flight Freeze Response

  • The "fight or flight response" is our body's automatic and primitive, inborn response that prepares the body to "fight" or "flee" from perceived attack, harm or threat to our survival. Sometimes, though, we perceive threat or harm when in reality, things are totally fine.
    This video explains how FFF-responses work, what it does to our body and mind, and how to deal with it.
    Braive AS is a company run by mental health professionals on a mission to make sure people, worldwide, can learn about their own mental health and get access to personalized treatment programs that will help them overcome the challenges they are facing.

      But even basic non dangerous stress responses follow these three reactions showing the general reaction a person might have toward stress.
      I for example, will often freeze and lock up in situations that say, make me angry, another production of stress. Or if I’m watching something that I find horrifying, my body again locks up.

    I figured if I drink coffee or any stimulant like redbull this triggers my fight or flight response too. I had a break from coffee/caffeine for 2 days and I was so relaxed in stressful situations, today a customer offered to make me a coffee, I took them up on it and it made me feel dreadful, tunnel vision kicked in and I got the jitters too. maybe this may help someone on this thread too.

    I never realised I suffered from anxiety, but I have had a dreadful FFF response at the thought of buying my first home. I had been saving for years, then received an inheritance and could afford to buy somewhere. However, I am a perfectionist and afraid of making a 'wrong' decision and my amygdala went in to overdrive. I was overcome with reasons not to even view houses. I looked at some online and saved them as 'favourites', thinking that I could come back to them at a later date when I had decided if I wanted to view or buy them. It never occurred to me that they would get sold and that houses that came on the market afterwards would be more expensive. I thought that that by 'saving' them as 'favourites' was the equivalent of putting them in my online basket. As time went on, the houses were becoming less affordable, but I couldn't work out why, so my solution was to save even harder. As I look back now, I break down in tears sometimes as I really cannot understand how/what I was thinking. I've been priced out of the market and have lost my long-term relationship as a result of me not buying somewhere. Another video on youtube states that in such situations, 'your thinking brain literally goes offline', which is exactly what happened to me. Since my anxiety has been diagnosed this year, it's been horrible. I look back at all the irrational thoughts I had which stopped me buying somewhere when I had the chance (I'm in my 50s now) and realise just how stupid they were (even though my brain convinced me that they were sensible at the time). The moral of this is that the FFF response doesn't just apply to physical threats, but can be any situation that someone is anxious about.

    1. Your Mind must be rational.

    3. Observe the Person that u feel anxiety from by project ur attention outward. The easy is body language the hardest is their facial expression. Repeat the step 2-3 time.

    I always thought the flight fight response was a good thing in theory, but in practice often leads to poor decisions and actually worse performance in stressful situations. (From my experience).
    I think that when we are exposed to something serious that we are not used to the brain sort of just panics and stops functioning. This is when I believe the freezing is worse, because we have not experienced this situation before and so the brain does not know how to react. If the body stayed functioning normally we would be able to asses properly and then act without being hindered by the feeling of nausia or extreme nervousness.
    Is there any way to ensure that we do not freeze when an emergency arises?

    • @jintarokensei3308
      @jintarokensei3308 5 лет назад +15

      3 ways:
      1. Experience the emergency on purpose in order to have a reference for your brain to fall back on.
      2. Be always mentally prepared for an emergency, in other words be ready to maintain rational thinking through willpower. At all times. A very stressful approach in my opinion, but then again that depends on your environment/situation.
      3. Be a high enough psychopath that your panic mode only manifest chemically, meaning that you don't perceive a threat as dangerous enough that your body freezes.
      Bonus: Of course you could always luck out, hoping your instincts are sharp enough to save you.
      Ideally you'd want to cover all of the above, however that will make you weird, since your responses to external stimuli will be very different from the vast majority of society.

I have had numerous hospital tests and even had an MRI scan of my brain because I have been so worried about what's wrong with me. Everything has come back clear. It has taken me 6 months to realise I've been bottling up my emotions & stress for my whole life. It has essentially made my body unable to recognise real threats as I'm always subconciously anxious and awaiting threats so I have FFF symptoms 24/7.

    • @Braive
      @Braive  6 лет назад +4

      Thank you for your feedback. The overactivation of the FFF response is definitely part of PTSD and often also a central component in the eventual processing of, as well as flashbacks associated with, the trauma.

    • @s.h.6520
      @s.h.6520 6 лет назад +2

      And I think its important for those who maybe are seeing this video trying to understand a loved ones reactions - you (as in sufferer) have absolutely no control over it. Your brain goes into self defence mode and you do not have the option to stop it at that moment in time. Logic doesnt apply - I often know I am not being logical in my thought processes but it doesnt stop the fear, just makes me feel worse. For those trying to understand - close your eyes, think of a time when you were truly, utterly terrified, absolutely petrified - were you able to talk properly, understand a conversation etc when you were in this state? Now imagine that 24/7 in the back of your head, never knowing when it will floor you.... and the trigger for that could be something as simple as dishes not packed correctly, or a social situation where there are simply too many people ...

    • @tracesprite6078
      @tracesprite6078 2 года назад

      I think freezing is a useful strategy that we instinctively do sometimes. We may be unable to think of anything useful to do so saving energy until an escape route is available can be a good idea. In addition, once you are frozen, you are less interesting to the lion. Predators love playing with their prey before they kill it so you made yourself into a small target. Mice play dead if they can't get away from a cat. If the cat isn't really hungry, it will walk away out of lack of interest.

    • @Braive
      @Braive  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Caroline, yes you are absolutely right. The FFF activates when we get anxious and PA is a result of a build up of FFF activation and the alarm system that reaches the peak point during an attack, before gradually subsiding again. PA can be really uncomfortable and scary, and can lead to fear of new attacks as well as the development of unhelpful thoughts and beliefs about having to avoid situations and/or physical sensations. Therefore it is important to learn techniques to recognise the symptoms of FFF, learn how to myth bust those fearful and unhelpful beliefs as well as techniques to cope with situations, thoughts and challenge unhelpful beliefs that might otherwise start to affect your quality of life.

    Had this happen when my brother and me saw this dude that's been harassing our mom. He was around the area, my brother and me looked at each other, parked the car and jumped out. He walked into an alley unaware of us and before we crossed the street as we waited for the cars to pass before crossing this had happen to me. I just took a couple breaths and said fuck it..when we crossed and started to confront him it all went away, we beat him down, spit in his face and told him if he comes around here again it's on sight.

    Notice that all the characteristics of the body's crisis/"fight or flight" response are *physiological* and are not equivalent to the emotion of fear; most people wrongly equate the two and thereby unfortunately think that it proves that fear is sometimes useful, when in fact it's not, as I explain in my Appeal to Nature video.

    We want to use this video for a college course in Counseling at Santa Rosa Junior College. Would you please grant us permission to caption the video so it has punctuation and clear sentences? If you turn on Community Contributions in RUclips, we could add the better captions to these videos. Alternatively, we can send you a corrected caption file that you can upload in RUclips. One more option is to use a site such as Amara.org that will embed the video and give us an interface to overlay the video with the better caption file.
    All of these options leave the control in your hands. If you take down the video, it will no longer appear in the course, we will just be embedding from RUclips, not downloading the video.

    Wasn't even informative enough come on ffs also releases adrenaline that's the main cause of anxiety!!

    • @Braive
      @Braive  7 лет назад +2

      Yes, adrenaline is definitely an important hormone involved, and one that gets released in an FFF response and causes the increase in sympathetic activation. Every emotional response has a behavioral component, an autonomic component, and a hormonal component. At the same time, adrenaline also plays a part when we feel excited, elated, nervous, focused etc. It also releases as a result of exercise. The most important message in this video is to show how a big part of how to tackle anxiety is to understand the connection between how we interpret situations (our thinking and earlier experiences), will affect how we feel and how our body react. Then learn how to better regulate the activation. Top-down methods by using our rational mind to calm down the amygdala, or bottom up by regulating the stress in our body through calming down the sympathetic- and increasing the parasympathetic nervous system through breathing exercises etc.

      Tankeboksen tell me this then, why would our brain say fight, why flight and why freeze, I'm interested

    • @Braive
      @Braive  7 лет назад

      Hi Dan. Thank you for your question. It is hard to give you a short answer, though. We assess situations and act to the best of our abilities. Fight or flight both involve sympathetic (SNS) activation and is our primary response where possible. Freeze is the most poorly understood response but involves inhibiting the SNS and increased parasympathetic activation. Freeze can also result in dissociation, common in people who experience trauma. Most theories see Freeze as our last resort that we use when we don't see a possible way out of the situation. If you are interested you can read more about it here:

    There is a 4th option: float? Or would that be freeze? You can either fight the waves as they push and pull, or just float and let the current carry you through life.

    • @tracesprite6078
      @tracesprite6078 2 года назад +2

      Hi Shae, my belief is that "freeze" is the kind of thing that happens when you are overwhelmed with fear. e.g. a person who was attacked by a lion went totally limp. The effect of that is that the lion doesn't see him/her as a living creature to toy with and is thus less likely to injure him/her. You see it with mice who "play dead" when a cat is nearby, instinctively making themselves less interesting to the cat. You could say that depression is a kind of freeze response because people become depressed when none of their usual coping strategies work so they just kind of give up. I think of "float" as representing the idea of living in a switched off dream. People who feel overwhelmed by the demands of life may go along on automatic pilot. They are not really experiencing their life but just drifting through it, responding as little as possible. I think it is an instinctive energy-saving strategy in a situation that may be too volatile or too complex for them to be able to participate well.

      A big part of how to tackle FFF activations is to understand the connection between how we interpret situations (our thinking and earlier experiences), affect how we feel and how our body react. Then learn how to better regulate the activation. Top-down methods by using our rational mind to calm down the amygdala by for example using selective attentional training exercises and challenging your interpretations in the situation, or bottom up by regulating the stress in our body through calming down the sympathetic- and increasing the parasympathetic nervous system through relaxation and breathing exercises, mindfulness etc. Thank you also for your positive feedback. When FFF alarm goes off our rational mind will look for a rational explanation to why we feel that way. Even when the fear we feel stem from misinterpretations of safe situations that stem from decisions made in the more primitive parts of our brain. If it is a regular occurrence, it might be good to talk to someone and learn more about why it occurs so often for you.

      Jessica Castillo used mindfulness and it did nothing other than make me even more aware of this activation , it very overrated thing. The only thing that has worked is do nothing and not react. Best method by far . All the others I tried for years are useless. Mediation being probably the worst of them all.

    • @fordfiesta16v93
      @fordfiesta16v93 6 лет назад

      Braive I hate how mediation is thrown at everything as if it a patch to solve endless problems when really it’s a money making marketing thing sold when it’s pretty useless overall. Most people are already aware of there states of mind and emotions. Why would they need to be even more aware? Again it’s used by snake oil people to make money. If eating dog shit had any benefits you would guarantee the self help market would be selling books by the millions, dog shit cures cancer, free your self from your depression with dog shit!!!!!!!
