    Nice result! I thought you would use the punch tool, similar on the Fox Dawg build. This is a nice alternative for the budget minded. Good luck with the move!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад +2

      Could well have done that, but for two reasons I chose the step drill, one is that I only have 4 sizes of hole punch and I needed 9 different graduations for this, and also this chain guard is typically heavyweight steel being Triumph, perhaps 2mm thick I think, and the manual punches would struggle with that, leading to a fair bit of distortion... so this time, step drills made a better job for the design I had in mind!

  • @Hui9697
    @Hui9697 3 года назад

    Hi Dell 'n' Pen.
    Another brilliant paint job, you've got the Tough paint down to a tee. The step drill worked nice with the graduated holes too. Would your dimple punches do it or are they not stepped enough in the set?
    The ole Leg-end's going to be a beauty.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад +1

      Hey buddy, the dimple punches would struggle with this, it's 2mm thick and pretty good quality steel, and they would certainly lead to a little distortion for sure, even if they made it through.. and also you're right, I think I only have maybe 4 sizes and I needed 9 graduations! Thanks for your support, as ever, take care, D&Px

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад

      What a cool coincidence, sadly I can't claim to have had mine that long, I bought it from a second hand tool store for £50 about 4yrs ago! Great minds think alike, what I love about it most is how lazy it is, I run it permanently on the slowest speed, I love the way it just lollops along quietly, and it can be interesting when the bit jams and the chuck falls off the taper, but to me that's just character!

    Can I ask what you use in your parts washer? I've heard conflicting ideas between proper washer fluid, diesel and kerosene. Many thanks!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад

      Hi Duncan, I don't personally believe in using flammable solvents, like diesel and kerosene, it means having 3 gallons of it sloshing around in the bottom of the tank constantly and it's not sealed properly like a fuel tank, so if there was ever a fire, it certainly wouldn't contribute to safety... I use an emulsifiable solvent, not just because it's safer, but also because it washed off with water and many of the jobs I do are de-greased before painting... things like diesel would leave a horrible residue which would affect the paint, but I can wash my parts off in the sink and get them bone dry with an air line... and as you can see, they're perfect for painting that way, and I never get any adverse reactions from the paint... here's a link for you, hope it helps buddy... www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/degreasing-solvent-emulsifiable-5l-59168?search=ak05&description=true

      The chain guard's pressed from 2mm steel, there are some ripples underneath it where the steel was shrunk in to the back curve and that's given a tiny distortion on top, I guess it's just a mass produced item.

    Can imagine the anxiety of planning that move. Best luck as always. Quick question... i would have used a sanding block to sand, would it have been incorrect to do so on the chain guard?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад

      sanding blocks give a great flattening effect to high peaks and uneven surfaces, but my aim here was simply to scuff the surface and smooth out any edges in the previous paint layer so that nothing shows through the new paint! As you'll see on Friday, it floated out perfectly smooth for a great finish... thanks for the moving best wishes, much going on behind the scenes, but we'll give you preview very soon!!

    “Brake cleaner to clean the parts washer fluid” - that’s another one you can explain in your ‘lubricants’ video! Aren’t they basically very similar? Sorry for being ignorant.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад +1

      No buddy, I use a water soluble degreaser which gets the worst of the grease off, but the brake cleaner wicks in to places where even water can't get, and also it dries away by evaporation, unlike water (of course water evaporates, but not as instantly as brake cleaner), so this leaves it dry even in places like any gaps behind the welded brackets where water can lurk, or even just dampness, and come out and trash the paint later on... using this method has ensured I never get reactions from left over chemicals.

    What cleaning fluid do you use in your parts cleaner?
    Whats your thoughts on using diesel / petrol to clean parts by hand?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад

      Firstly mate, petrol NEVER use for cleaning parts, the fume build up can flash and burn down your garage, diesel isn't so dangerous, but generally, the same as kerosene, they are both a heavy oil and will take an awful lot of cleaning to actually get the degreaser itself off the part, so I use an emulsifiable solvent (obviously meaning it's a water soluble), not only does this mean it's non-flammable, but also you can rinse it off with water, and certainly for me when most of my parts are to be painted, it's very important to get all the solvents off the surface... here's a link to what I use, and it works extremely well, as you can see: www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/degreasing-solvent-emulsifiable-5l-59168?search=ak05&description=true

    Great styling on the chain guard. What's the reason for wet sanding versus dry sanding?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад +1

      Dry sanding tends to clog the paper when you're using a fine grit, the water rinses the debris away, also lubricates the paper, leading to less aggressive abrasion, gives a smoother finish, but still keyed for painting!

    Be safe out there both of you

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 года назад +1

      Hi buddy, I'm afraid I don't know of such a chain, but on the simple knowledge of metals, I know of no material, however exotic, that can't be cut with a slitting disc, these days a disc grinder can go in a pocket, battery powered and sliced through any lock or chain... there are other cunning methods they use to break locks, no lock is infallible... I know it's not much help now, but in the future, have you considered a tracker? If you can afford a proper one fitted by an alarm company and monitored, that would be the best, but if that's a little pricey, there's the Monimoto product, which is battery powered and syncs to your phone, if someone moves your bike you get a phone alert and your phone will track the bike within a metre, as long as they don't put it in a steel container (which for what it's worth, would also disable a regular tracker as well)... just a thought, every little helps mate. Keep safe there, we're both well thank you!
