The trick is... carry a tube of silicon grease (brake grease) with you! I've got a kilo of the stuff in the garage in tubes and any time a rubber or plastic component won't slide back together, out with the silicon grease. The good thing about it is twofold: it doesn't react with the rubber or plastic and it does eventually soak into rubber surfaces leaving them slightly more flexible and just as grippy as they were without the grease.
It’s so awesome hearing that bike run again. Jeremy you’re the man for donating this bike. There’s a lot of sentimental value and memories to that bike. My first street bike ride with Jeremy was with him on that bike and me on my Yamaha Bolt
Wish I had a friend like you to counter those days when I feel like just pushing the bike out to the street with a "Free to good home" sign on it out of frustration. And it generally starts out running, even. Your videos are such a joy to watch, and inspire me to go ahead and go tear that thing apart (again) to see if I can get it working right. Now if only I could figure out how to get the neighbors to give me their derelict bikes... Keep it up. 👍
A good mechanic can do this in less time with working (new) parts. You know Craig isn't just a 'good' mechanic because he put 3 carbs together, got the angry pixies to show up, jerryrig an incompatible battery and MacGyver the rest with a £5 multitool all in one rainy afternoon and went his merry way without air-filters.
Mt 97 TBird 900 is coming up to 30k miles and is still going strong. Pretty easy work on as long as you don't mind the PITA airbox and the very specific tool needed to get spark plugs out. But otherwise perfect. Head turner bike for £3k. Great round town and big enough engine for the motorway. Just finished a tour around France and Belgium (Dart marlin screen with the little extender thingies made 80mph cruising fine). I could pay 10k for a new speed twin but who wants to spend that money on a bike. I could get a Blackbird but too tempting to go too fast for me and sounds like an inline honda (no offence guys). I could get a 10k adventure bike, but again, who wants to spend that. My Triumph runs great, will zip through the traffic at Hampton Court or take me to the Vosges mountains. It's probably worth about 2k, but still going strong. If you are thinking of getting one, and own a socket set, do it! If something does go wrong they are fairly basic tech that can be wrangled with a Haynes manual and a few RUclips videos.
